Popularitas

  Kapasitas penyimpanan

Day 86 – Ouch: Oh dear, look what Ellie did. Yesterday she was playing hockey and got hit on the thumb with a hockey ball. We eventually decided to go to A&E and, after a long wait, it turns out the thumb is fractured. We got back just after midnight (which is why this is today’s picture). She’s going to be in plaster for up to 6 weeks, which is going to be a real pain. Luckily, I’ll be hand to look after her

Whenever this happens, my life is put into shock-mode. Kind of like when I give cells the cold-shoc

Whenever this happens, my life is put into shock-mode. Kind of like when I give cells the cold-shock treatment by zapping them in ethanol and denature their DNA with Ethidium Bromide. In other words, as much as I love my parents, love hurts. And because of our history, whenever they come over, it’s always a time where I have mixed feelings. We get in arguments over everything and nothing. I wish I could say that I gain the Lord from this, but while it’s happening, it sucks. Like crap.

Moving on.

I seem to have an incredible fancy for grossing everyone out in the beginning of every post I write. Yesterday, it was the arm. And today, you’re in for a real treat. It has been five days since this happened, and I was finally allowed to take the steri-strips and band-aid off. I don’t know what I was expecting (rotting flesh? dinosaurs? a missing thumb?), but I sure was both delighted and grossed out when I saw this:

(So yeah, guys, I know. Not a PG rated post.)

Delighted that my thumb is not purple; grossed out that it looks like, well… that. How is that even part of me?

Also, for the past 6 days, I had been instructed by my doctor to keep my thumb dry.

“But how am I going to wash my hands? How am I going to take a shower?” I protested in the office.

(In my mind, I was really thinking: How am I going to wash kale??)

Then I thought about my runs. “Am I allowed to sweat?”

He must have thought I was retarded. Instead he replied, “Those are excellent practical questions. They are questions to which I, frankly, have no answers.”

WHAT KIND OF DOCTOR ARE YOU?!

He later gave me a latex glove and told me to tie an elastic around it when performing hand-submerged-in-water activities. I was skeptical at first, but it actually works. And works really well.

It kind of reminds me of, well, Michael Jackson. Except weirder because I only wear it on my right hand.

After my one and a half hour run this morning (20 hills!), I felt pretty good. Something like victorious. It was a really, really good run: the scenic route, the crisp fall air, with the Sun just rising – glorious. I made some bitter kale juice when I came home. It was…bitter.

I worked on my French journal. It was a bit of a pickle because I needed to be writing entries all semester-long. Evidently, I ended up writing 5 of them in one sitting.

However, I sorely missed pickles on my lunch this afternoon. I tried to make up for it with some tangy mustard eggplant. (I mean, they’re almost the same as pickles, right?)

Dinner was pretty much the same green stuff. Yeah, I’m boring, I know.

If you want some alternative entertainment, please gaze at my Dad’s meal.

At dinner, I also got to showcase the wine I made in Fermentation lab this term. (Evidently, I’m not a drinker, so the beverage was enjoyed by my parents. In moderation, of course )

Now, how many 19-year-olds (I was 19 at the time) can say they’ve made white wine from scratch? Not many, I tell you, not many. Indeed, we science geeks must be proud of the few unique abilities that we do have, after all.

Lastly, I am now entering finals (aka Academic Armageddon), so upcoming posts may or may not be an indication of the actual state of my sanity. Meanwhile: Happy Saturday, folks!

As an equivalent, there can be scanner on each key. Only the right person press the key towards the right door can he/she open the door. It will be safe if he/she lost the key cuz others cannot open his/her door with a wrong finger print. If one wants to lend his/her key to others temporarily, he/she only need to authorize a one-time usage with the authorization of his/her fingerprint.

It’s official, Iggy has started teething. Six weeks ago we were sure his pearly whites had started their descent from the gum line, but it was either a false alarm or they decided to scamper back to the safety of their home and plan a better orchestrated attack. Well they’re back, ruthless and taking no prisoners.

The first sign was the drooling:

Simultaneous drooling while sleeping. He must get that from my side of the family.

Then he started poking his tongue out his mouth 90% of the time he was awake:

The red cheeks are a dead giveaway that bubs is teething.

Same tongue, different day

Then came the thumb sucking:

Little does he know his Mom sucked her thumb until she was at least 8 years old.

So we decided to give him a rusk to chew on:

Almost......

And....Touchdown!

For those of you not fluent in babyspeak, a rusk is defined as:

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Apparently this teething thing can last until bubs is 3 years old, so we’ve got a LONG way to go. Until then, it looks as though we better arm ourselves with an arsenal of rusks, paracetamol, chew toys, drool bibs and ear plugs.

• 1 – Primates usually have a shorter thumb than humans – the thumb of the macaque (see photo on the left) does not rearch out behond the distal border of the handpalm.

• 2 – Primates usually have a lower ‘2D:4D digit ratio’ than humans – the hand of the macaque is featured with a much longer ring finger (digit 4) than the pointer finger (digit 2).

• 3 – Primates usually have more fingerprint- and palmar whorls than humans – the hand of the macaque is featured with 5 palmar whorls.

• 4 – Primates always have a lower ‘ridge density’ than humans.

• 5 – Primates usually have (various) palmar transversal hand creases, a.k.a. ’simian lines’ – the hand of the macaque has one ’simian line’.

ORTHODONTIC UPDATE OCTOBER 2009 RICHARD CY SHIN, DDS MS DIPLOMATE, AMERICAN BOARD OF ORTHODONTICS On

ORTHODONTIC UPDATE OCTOBER 2009

RICHARD CY SHIN, DDS MS

DIPLOMATE, AMERICAN BOARD OF ORTHODONTICS

One of the most common questions that I get from the parents is “Doctor, when is the best time to start braces for my child?” I am sure that if either of the parents have had orthodontic treatment in the past, he or she would certainly want to make sure that the child is checked to see if they need orthodontic treatment or not.

Many parents are already confused by the mixed messages they received from many sources regarding the best time to start orthodontic treatment.

Is it best to start treatment when just a few of the permanent teeth have erupted (usually between 7 – 10 years)?

Or, when all of the permanent teeth have erupted (usually around 12-13 years)?

Or, is it best to start in primary “baby” teeth (before any of the permanent teeth erupt, i.e. under 6 years)?

The answer is there is not one best time for every child! Each child presents with a unique problem and therefore each child will need a specialized treatment plan beneficial to him or her.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have an orthodontic check-up no later than 7 years. Most children, by 7 years, would have reached key landmarks such as: 1) eruption of the front permanent teeth, 2) eruption of the back permanent teeth “six-year-old molars”.

The orthodontists can identify any key problems with the relationship of these permanent teeth and recommend either to start an Early Phase treatment. This is sometimes called Phase 1 treatment or Interceptive treatment. The goal of the treatment is to improve any dental problems that these permanent teeth might pose to the future growth and development of the developing permanent teeth and the jaws. Usually, the magnitude of the problem will be reduced and in some cases eliminated and greatly help in the Comprehensive orthodontic treatment stage when all of the primary teeth have been lost.

Here are some of the common examples of the malocclusions (“bad bites”) that I see in children in this clinic.

ANTERIOR CROSSBITE

Here you can see that one (often more) front tooth is coming out in front its counterpart on the top. This can be particularly damaging to the health of the gums of the teeth in crossbite, as well as to the bite.

POSTERIOR CROSSBITE

This time, the crossbite is in the back of the mouth, where the top teeth on one side are biting on the inside of the bottom teeth on that side. Left untreated, a posterior crossbite can cause a permanent asymmetry to the bite and to the face, because the crossbite forces the growing lower jaw to position itself to one side. This results in relatively more lower jaw growth on the side away from the crossbite and relatively less lower jaw growth on the side of the crossbite. Some studies have shown that an untreated crossbite can be a contributing factor in TMJ (temperomandibular joint) problems in an adult.

CROWDING

In this picture, we see severe crowding in the lower arch. Not only does such crowding look unsightly, but it is extremely difficult to clean efficiently and effectively around such crooked teeth. Poor oral hygiene will result in gum bleeding, bone loss and ultimately, tooth loss.

OPEN BITE

An open bite is often associated with habits such as thumb or finger sucking, mouth breathing or with disharmonious growth between the upper and lower jaw. Instead of the forces of eating and chewing being distributed amongst all the teeth, those forces in an open bite patient are only on the back teeth. Such uneven distribution of forces may result in gum and bone loss around the back teeth, tooth fracture, early tooth loss and future TMJ dysfunction. Quite often, open bite patients have associated speech problems.

PROTRUSION OF THE TEETH OR “OVERBITE”

Excessively protruding front teeth are obviously more prone to trauma. What a heartache it is to see that patient in our office with their front teeth broken off because of a fall or a sports injury. Children with upper tooth protrusion are commonly very self-conscious of their appearance.

RETRUSION OF THE TEETH OR “UNDERBITE”

An underbite is a condition where the upper jaw is too small and often too narrow to match with the size of the lower jaw, and consequently, when the upper teeth come in, they fall behind the lower teeth. Here again, we see uneven distribution of forces with resulting premature bone and tooth loss, as well as TMJ dysfunction. If not treated in a growing child, an underbite will usually require corrective jaw surgery in the late teens or early adulthood.

SUMMARY

Growth is critical for an ideal treatment result and it is the best helper available to the orthodontist to position of the upper and lower jaws. When the both jaws are in harmony, the erupting teeth will grow into the best possible position.

I was given a freebie once — a rare event indeed — by a client. It was a small black 4 G

I was given a freebie once — a rare event indeed — by a client. It was a small black 4 GB USB drive branded as Dell. Some folk call this sort of thing a Flash drive, Jump drive, Pen drive or even a thumb drive. Anyway, I used it all the time, and it was great.

Then I broke it. It was plugged in and sticking out of a USB slot when I accidentally kicked it.

So I nipped out and bought a new flash drive in my lunch hour. I got a Peak Slider. What a disaster!

Things got really s l o w — really SLOW.

In theory, the maximum a USB 2.0 drive can go is 48MBps (480 megabits per second / 8 bits per byte = 60 Megabytes per second, with 10% reserved = 54 Megabytes per second), so I was expecting USB drives of upto about 54MBps — especially since USB 3.0 is imminent. USB 3.0 boasts 3 Gbps throughput and will be really fast — somewhere around 300 MBps!

So I googled fastest flash drives and found a lot that were under £20 for 4Gb and 30 MB/sec.

I also found my recent purchase at Peak’s website: Read speed: 13.5 MB/sec; Write speed: 3.5 MB/sec *sob*.

Jeez – no wonder it was slow; 3.5 versus 30. No competition!

I asked around, and no-one realised that speed was even a variable – even in the computer shops (where a couple of counter staff actually had to look up the transfer rates on the web). PC World (to their credit) always seem to mention the transfer rate along with the storage size and price, but they had lots of 4 MBps ones, a few 10 MBps and one at 18 MBps! Transfer rates seem to have nothing to do with price — how weird! I asked guys in a client’s office, and they discovered that they had very slow speeds for the freebies that sales reps had given them, and the best speed for privately bought USB drives was just 7 MBps.

Ruthie has a Kingston DT1 2GB Data Traveler USB Drive, which doesn’t seem to exist on the Kingston website (I hate when that happens)! In fact transfer rates are hidden, and I couldn’t actually find out the speed — isn’t that awful? I suspect, therefore, that it is slow, and have resolved to avoid Kingston from now on.

I have ordered a new flash drive — it is a Pico (which they say can store four full length ripped movies, five days worth of music, more than four-thousand 5 megapixel photos, or eighty-metres worth of shelved books).

Super Talent’s Pico is the world’s smallest — but in terms of dimensions only. It is 32mm x 15 mm x 3 mm and the 8GB is blue plastic and so weighs eff-all (1.5g) — but it is water resistant and shockproof too!

The transfer rate is about 30Mbps — which is almost maxing out what USB2.0 can cope with. It cost under 20 quid including postage, so I am already chuffed.

I am converting into a lefty. Why? Because my right hand failed me and I’m stuck in this thing for 4-6 weeks. When my doctor (whose looks resembled a frog) told me to keep this thumb prison on for 6 weeks I just looked at him and said “and by 6 you mean 3, right?” he didn’t like my joke.

I slashed my thumb at work today. It’s a good thing I’m not queasy at the sight of blood

I slashed my thumb at work today. It’s a good thing I’m not queasy at the sight of blood, let’s just say that. I applied pressure to it but after twenty minutes, it didn’t show any signs of slowing, and I was getting very frustrated, so I called my brother (he’s a paramedic), and he told me to apply pressure. And raise my hand above my head. I looked like a crazy person because I was walking down the street like that. (Pity I didn’t need a cab!) I got sick of “applying pressure,” so I wrapped my thumb in the gauze-and-tape contraption you see above. This is how I came to discover the dismal state of our office first aid kit… we have two bottles of antiseptic. One expired in 2003. The other expired in 2002. Now, that is what I call helpful… When I got home, I had my brother (a different brother; EMT, medical student) clean it up for me and re-bandage it.

Between this and my wrist, my office seems to have it in for me!! I think it’s still bleeding, actually. I’ll spare you all the bloody photo of the gauze my brother cut off my finger. It might seem weird that this whole affair annoys me as much as it does; you’d think it would thrill me, given my reaction to weight gain, but it’s not at all like that. First of all, a fingertip is an extremely annoying place for a cut. And it doesn’t give me any satisfaction whatsoever if I haven’t done it myself, anyway, so I could have done quite well without this, thank you very much!

Kailey’s post the other day bizarrely had me craving lentils! Bizarrely, because while I like lentils just fine, they’re not generally a food I associate with cravings. But a craving must be satisfied…

Romaine, roasted delicata squash, “cinnamon croutons,” and, of course, lentils!

Obligatory “sans anti-sog baggie” picture.

Vegetarian drumstick, whole grain couscous, and Steamfresh broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. I’ve decided couscous is a pretty awesome grain; the most awesome thing about it is how incredibly fast it cooks, and you don’t even really need to boil any water! I just used some water from the hot water urn and poured it over the couscous. Ta-da! That said, I know that doing something repeatedly is supposed to ease the anxiety over doing it, but I am still finding it insanely stressful to add this whole “grain” component here. It’s so ridiculous… it’s what people do – they eat! Why am I just so incredibly special that I can’t do that like a “normal” person?! But I’ll spare the Verbal Vomit, given the late hour…

On another front, I am seriously out of control… I was meant to be buying boots, but since that’s all but impossible, I wound up with more shirts. This tells me several things: first, that when I have my eye on something, I ought to just buy it immediately, since I’m going to end up with it eventually. Second, I need to take a day off just to clean out my closet, because I have no space for all of this.

And in my indecisiveness, I went and bought this shirt too, to see whether it “worked” better for me than the purple.

There is something weird about the fit. The purple one has the same problem, come to think of it. It would really make my life a lot simpler if I just tried things on in the store, wouldn’t it?!

And when I was meant to be buying the boots, since I (surprise!) couldn’t actually find any, I purchased two long-sleeved thermal shirts instead. I’d wanted these since the summer, too — the sleeves are really long, and there’s a hole for the thumb. I’d post a picture, but I’m too lazy to try it on, and it will just look like a blob if it isn’t on a person! (Heh… it would look like a blob on this person, too. :p) It’s this one, in the black and the black/white.

To end on a happy note: my sister-in-law gave birth to a baby girl today! This is truly incredible, because she comes after half a dozen boys. (No, that isn’t an exaggeration.)

Have an awesome Thursday — almost the weekend!!

Growing up, there wasn’t a lot of money, and I grew up in a proto-feminist environment where most “girly-girl” dolls were unofficially banned. That said, I did have a couple of Madame Alexander dolls that I adored. These were considered acceptable because of the literary aspect of them. This is not my actual doll. The dolls were lost a long time ago. I also had a “Lucinda” doll, who looked a lot like me. I remember how nice they smelled when they first came out of their boxes: a little like a new car smell.

I often made clothes for them from patterns, as my mom taught me how to sew with a sewing machine (as well as cook with real pots and pans) when I was about six. When I was ten I ran a sewing machine needle through my finger making a dress for them. Because I hated the doctor so much, I told my parents but showed no pain or reaction because I wanted them to think I was fine. Of course I had to get a tetanus shot.

Come to thing of it, this was the same year that I found the tip of my dad’s thumb in the backyard near his table saw. He had cut it off – my mom rushed home from the ER to let us know that the doctors might be able to re-attach it if we got it back quickly enough. We had a mad dash to find it. I found it – screamed “I found it!” – and my mom rushed it back in ice. Turned out it was too small to reattach. He had one thumb shorter than the other after that.

I still have a little round white scar on the tip of my right index finger from the sewing machine needle.
