Recently, I had to use the PGP for the first time when one of my colleague wanted to send some docum

Recently, I had to use the PGP for the first time when one of my colleague wanted to send some documents securely. Over all, this is an easy process and works quite well. I use Windows XP, Thunderbird and gnupg for this to work. Following are some instruction to do this…

You download the software from http://www.gnupg.org if you’re using Windows. If you have Linux, you most likely already have GnuPG.

Enigmail is the plug-in for Thunderbird. You can get it from https://addons.mozilla.org. Alternately, on GNOME-based Linux, check out Seahorse. You can use GnuPG with Outlook, but it isn’t pretty. I would recommend Thunderbird any day.

The software will generate a key pair for you.

Unlike traditional S/MIME, where you use an X.509 certificate signed by a trusted CA, PGP / GnuPG is based on a more general model. You determine if a key is “valid” if it has been signed by someone you “trust”. So, let’s say, you trust that I will not sign any key without verifying that it actually belongs to who it says it belongs to. Then, you can be assured that any key you get that is signed by me is valid.

For distribution, you can upload your public key to a few key servers at PGP and MIT. Keep your private key, well, private.

Signing a message is easy. You just click a button in Thunderbird that says, “Sign message”.

Encryption requires that you have the public key of the person you’re sending the message to. Either he can give it to you, or you can download it from a key server that you trust and that he’s uploaded it to. Once the public key is downloaded, it is stored in your “keyring”. When you send a message to a person whose public key you have, you can click the “Encrypt” button, and it will work.

If you know that none of their programs need to purchase a license, it’s a rather high amount of profit. The greatest part of the 79 million comes from another enterprise in the same market, Google Inc. Now, Google has his own Open source programs like Google Chrome etc. The profit of Mozilla has grown a lot in the years where Google didn’t have his own browser (in 2007 the earning of mozilla has grown about 12%, in 2008 just a little growth of 5.3%). Before google you just had Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox as the 2 great oligarchs. Now Google is penetrating the market. The contract between Google and Mozilla is still going until 2011. We all hope Mozilla can stay in Business after 2011!

This is a really cool video from Golden Filter from the single, “Thunderbird”, a follow up to their debut single “Solid Gold”.

The Golden Filter are an electronic duo based in New York. Lead singer Penelope Trappes grew up in Lismore, near Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia, while disco and analogue synth programmer Stephen Hindman is originally from Ohio, USA.

They produced their first single, Solid Gold, in July 2008, which was then this year on the 15th February 2009 and is also available as track 9 on the album Infinity +1 by A-Trak. Its video was filmed in Australia, near Melbourne. They have also released remixes of We Are the People (Empire of the Sun), New in Town (Little Boots), Lay It Down (Peter Bjorn and John) and Far Away (Cut Copy). Quite impression collection of accomplishments mates!

Check it out world — an on time release (although this blog post isn’t)!

There isn’t much new, but I plan to make up for it with some pretty cool stuff for 0.3.
So after the first release, the feedback I got suggested less UI, so that was what I tried to work towards in terms of achievement.

This release seems very scrawny in comparison to the amazing progress being accomplished by other students of my class, mainly the Processing.js crew. But check it out–here are some of the goals I have set up for my 0.3 milestone:

Code a function to disable next/prev button if current message is last/first

Code a function to allow seeing a short

Code a function to allow skipping spam using navigation

Test extension’s display flow on a netbook

Navigation buttons that look nice

Consult other netbook users and seek review on basic UI left available

This release point is the result of one four-hour and one three-hour sessions in my office, where all I need to test front end code between edits is a lightning quick firing up of Thunderbird. These two days of work resulted in a total of +7 -2 lines of code, but I find victory in the fact that that is 7 hours of material I don’t have to learn again. I moved forward from understanding how to add elements to nodes (in layman’s terms: to insert a new control with its own attributes and programmability into item groups used in the base code of Thunderbird) and got comfortable with a new set of different controls and attributes.
My first aim was to get rid of the top toolbar to free up a good chunk of vertical space for the message content portion, so my plan of attack was to ask if element removal is possible in the #extdev channel. I was hooked up with two attributes to choose from, removeelement and hidden.
Removeelement sounded like a bucket of fun, so I gave that a try on the whole mail-toolbox toolbox. That actually ended up being kinda volatile, as the fs window would no longer recognize any selected message, and simply show a blank white inner space. So I dug one level deeper into the node and removed the two toolbar elements individually, one at a time, and found that it was the top [File, Edit, View, etc...] that shouldn’t be removed. Ever.
But even with one toolbar taken down, it still doesn’t look seamless. So the out-in-the-open answer became hidden. mail-toolbox hidden=”true”, that is. Great success!

Next thing to do was add a Prev & Next button for navigating through emails with the mouse. It took me about almost two hours and several different placements to get the feng shui just right and make sure that they wouldn’t warp or displace themselves like this:

but the two young buttons seem satisfied in their new home behind a spacer. Their auto-fitting with the vertical space was fixed by simply removing the align=”end” attribute I put in. Now they just need funky arrow icons to express their adolescent creativity, and stuff.

Oh yeah and I fixed the minimum version of Thunderbird problem. I set it to 2.9.*, since it seems the safest bet any 3.0pre build.

Also along this road I tried some other attributes that ended up not being necessary, but still cool tools to understand. The first is observes, which I noticed was on a most of the toolbox items, and insertbefore/insertafter. observes is like a radio to a broadcast tower, a broadcaster, sending the signal to adhere to any changed default attributes in the broadcaster. There’s a better explanation here. And have a XUL element reference also for good measure.

And along this road a few more cool feature ideas popped into my head;
People might like to be able to see or know if the next or previous message is junk and would prefer to skip it.
Perhaps add an easy way to zoom the size of text, both in and out to accommodate many different display settings.
A drop down list of message folders (inbox, sent, deleted, etc), with folder change going to the latest non-junk message, but I’m not dead set on keeping this idea if testers don’t feel it necessary.

Will keep you updated.

Well, it is not the easiest journey. Especially if you, like me, no longer have access to your Outlook 2007 Media. But here is a way to pull it off. No guarantees, but hope it saves you some time:

1.0 YOU NEED OUTLOOK
OK, you can try to do it without Outlook using a plug-in, but I couldn’t get that working. Other than that Thunderbird can’t recognize PST files without Outlook installed. If you don’t have access to your media you can download the Trial version from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/outlook

When you install Outlook, it will set up a mail account – be sure to set one up, even if it is bogus. Because with no email profile, Outlook won’t create a PST file…and with no default PST file, you can’t open a DIFFERENT PST file. Why? Oh, please don’t get me started…

2.0 OUTLOOK MUST BE ACTIVATED
For me, if Outlook wasn’t activated, I couldn’t point it to my PST file. It would blubber about it being a “reduced functionality mode.” Activation, luckily, cures this.

3.0 OUTLOOK MUST BE YOUR DEFAULT MAIL PROVIDER
You can change it later, but if you already have Thunderbird as your default, then Thunderbird import will fail. So, when you install Outlook, make sure it is set to be your default mail program (No, I don’t know how to set it after you install).

4.0 REMOVE PST PLUG-IN (IF YOU INSTALLED IT)
If you installed the PST plug-in from Softpedia, uninstall it and restart Thunderbird. That thing will block Thunderbird’s default import process.

5.0 OK, YOU ARE READY!!
Once you have set the stage by completing the above steps, you can begin the process of importing your PST files to Thunderbird by doing the following:

In Outlook, you should have a default PST. To get to YOUR PST, you use the FILE -> DATA FILE MANAGEMENT menu option, click ADD and point it to the PST you want to use.

Then you will point to that file, click the SET AS DEFAULT and restart Outlook.

If you are paranoid, like me, you will then go back into data file management, remove the default PST file and restart Outlook. Because Thunderbird creates file-based email folders, I want to make sure it didn’t encounter 2 “Inbox” folders – I don’t know how it would handle that.

WARNING: If you have nested folders in your PST and any folders have the same name, I’ve read you can encounter problems with Thunderbird’s import. In Outlook, you will want to review your folder names and make sure there are no duplicates.

Close Outlook, and start Thunderbird

Use Thunderbird’s Tools -> Import and select “mail”, then select “Outlook” - it SHOULD, with all the above steps completed, begin the process of importing your data. Mine took about 10 minutes, and was about 480MB of data.

Repeat the above only select “Address Books” and that should bring in your contacts.

I am far from an expert, here. Just a computer geek that found the learning curve a bit obnoxious, and thought I would share what I found out. If it didn’t work, you can try Aid4Mail (i didn’t). Good Luck!

UPDATED: With more fine wine toonage, thanks to our readers!

My very good friend Randy Fuller has a really cool blog that is not about rock and roll. It’s about wine, but he wrote an excellent piece recently on rock and roll wines. Actually, it’s about good wine in bottles with rock and roll labels – Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon is there, so are the Rolling Stones, and even a Woodstock poster bottle. As I said, very cool, and you can read it here.

I’ve known Randy for many years now, we went to college and high school together and even back then I knew him as a wine connoisseur. My tastes in wine ran mainly toward the red, namely Ripple Red and Thunderbird Red Label. Randy had a more adventurous palate, seeking out the exotic and poetically named Annie Green Springs.

Any time you spent an evening with Annie Green Springs you always had to save the last dance for the porcelain maiden, hugging her inviting curves as you relived – and re-tasted – everything you had for dinner and lunch and possibly for breakfast about 18 hours earlier. And I always found no matter how much you puke, the tender toes of Ripple still dance along your palate, even as you encounter the earthy nose of those Jack In The Box tacos you had for supper.

One very hot and humid Labor Day weekend, when I was still living at my parents’ house, Randy and I were assessing the merits of a few bottles of fine wine when suddenly I had to make room in my stomach for more wine.

Unfortunately, the door I thought was the bathroom was really the front door (now this is my own house) and my vomit settled warmly upon the front porch. Many hours later, I was awakened by a crash and a torrent of violent cursing – from the unfortunate paper boy who slipped on the puke. Somewhere an ex-paper boy is loading his deer rifle for a trip to the mall, and I’m very sorry about that.

Of course I have very fond memories of dear MD 20/20, the nectar of the ghetto. Silky smooth on the tongue and available in a rainbow of colors, a typical “Mad Dog” experience was very much like drinking gasoline that somebody pissed in. Although this fine wine had some very attractive flavors (“Electric Melon” comes to mind) my favorite was always the down-home “Red Grape Wine,” which smelled a bit like merlot – that someone spilled in a dumpster. Many a night I felt the warm embrace of dear 20/20, as it beckoned me to a ride on the Tilt-A-Whirl Bed Spin and finally punched my round-trip meal ticket before kissing me goodnight.

Well, enough of this bullshit – if you want to read about wine go see my friend Randy Fuller at his Now and Zin website and explore the pleasures within. You will find this is a man who knows his wine, and I’ll drink to that.

Além disso, também remixaram faixas de artistas como Little Boots, Cut Copy, Peter Bjorn and John e Empire of the Sun.

Solid Gold

I’ve found two themes for firefox and thunderbird that I’m so pleased with them I have to promote them a bit . They are Charamel and Silvermel created by Kurt Freudenthal. I discovered them thanks to Chewie. So, what I like about them is:

Works with newer versions of Mozilla firefox and thunderbird (Including version 3 beta 4)

It’s got really nice colours and a nice layout.

It works fine under linux and Mac OS X. In the latter it lets you have small icons in the bookmark bar, whereas the default theme does not allow you to do that. See image to see what I mean.

You’ve got two different colours to choose from.

So go and buy the guy a beer so he can work more on them .
