This is a dakini, a tantric deity which is the female embodiement of enlightened energy. In the Tibetan language, the dakini is known as Khandroma or “she who traverses the sky”, also “she who moves in space”

Although dakini figures appear in Hinduism and in the Bön tradition, dakinis are particularly prevalent in Vajrayana Buddhism and have been particularly conceived in Tibetan Buddhism where the dakini, generally of volatile or wrathful temperament, act somewhat as a muse (or inspirational thoughtform) for spiritual practice.

Dakinis are energetic beings in female form, evocative of the movement of energy in space. In this context, the sky or space indicates shunyata, the insubstantiality of all phenomena, which is, at the same time, the pure potentiality for all possible manifestations.

This dakini is posed standing on a lotus seat, with both legs flexed. In her various hands are different tantric implements; the skullcap filled with the elixir of life, the trident staff, and possibly the kartika (curved knife).

On Nov. 7 and 8, Drebu participated in the annual Road to Asia Festival hosted by and at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto.

The festival featured a wide range of Asian cultural performances, artifacts and food: Japan, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Pakistan and Tibet.

Drebu introduced the Tibetan acts for the two-day festival. On Saturday, Nov. 7, Mingmar Tsering performed Tibetan traditional folk songs singing, and playing the dranyen (Tibetan guitar) and flute on two different stage times.

Mingmar performs with the dranyen

The following Sunday, Nov. 8, we featured Tibetan monks on two separate acts. The first act featured three monks reciting “Kyamdro (refuge), Nyense (invitation) and Ngowa (dedication)”. The second act involved a monk invoking Padmasambhava for world peace.

Tibetan monks at the Road to Asia festival 2009

The monks are: Lobsang Gawa, Jampa Tsering and Ngawang Rabjor Lama.

Throughout the two-day Road to Asia festival Drebu featured a Tibetan painter at the children’s area. Tenpa, who studied in India, painted traditional Tibetan sketches which many children and adults delightfully coloured and filled. He guided them along the process and enjoyed the experience of presenting Tibetan art at the festival.

All of the festival participants were offered an honorarium by Drebu as a recognition and appreciation for their contribution in helping promote Tibetan arts and culture in Toronto.

We thank all our sponsors for their support, and to JCCC for inviting us to participate in this wonderful and fun festival. Our sponsors are listed in the previous blog post.

Please enjoy the photographs of the event displayed on the right.

The kirthimukha or “face of glory” is an ancient symbol used as a door guardian across China, India and Tibet.

In Hindu mythology, Jalahandra desired Parvati, his adopted mother, and the wife of his father Shiva. He sent the demon Rahu to confront Shiva and to claim Parvati. Shiva was so enraged by this insult that he manifested his anger as a horrific demon that sprang forth from his third eye. This demon had flaming eyes and the ravenous mouth of lion, and Shiva ordered it to consume Rahu. Terrified and unable to outrun this creature, Rahu turned to Shiva and begged for mercy. Mollified by this, Shiva ordered the creature to cease and desist, upon which the creature said,

“But I’m hungry, what should I do now?”

“Eat your hands and your feet” Shiva said.

And the creature began to do just that. Only it didn’t stop there but continued to consume its arms and legs too, and its body and neck until all that was left was its head and face! Shiva was impressed by this and declared,

“This is my most magnificent creation ever! Henceforth it shall be known as Kirtimukha, the Face of Glory, and must always remain at the entrance of my door. From now on, no one comes before me unless they first bow to Kirtimukha.”
Each month I will post another installment of the feed, for a total of 19 installments.

I’m a hoarder by nature, so my drawers and cupboards are full of all sorts of useless old tat – buttons for shirts I’ve long since got rid of, Top Trumps cards I haven’t used since I was 11, that sort of thing.

But when I go on holiday I can legitimately hoard things, and often what looks like nothing to other people has great significance to me: sat in front of me, for example, is a big stone which I am using as a paperweight to keep an unruly pile of receipts in check. But it’s not just any old stone. It was a stone I washed Bosante the elephant with in a crocodile-infested river in Nepal in the summer.

Having a bath with an elephant - out of shot to the left is a crocodile...

I’m probably a bit sentimental with souvenirs, and I do tend to keep nigh-on anything as a reminder or keepsake. But I love buying things which show the culture of the place I’ve been to, and Nepal was brilliant for that.

Ganesh painting

Above is a painting of the Hindu God Ganesh which I picked up in Pokhara for less than £5. It is painted onto cloth and the colours and design are stunning. Held up to the light or placed in a well-lit window, the colours glow and shimmer – it took somebody hours to make, and I feel privileged to own it and be blessed by its ‘good luck’ charm.

Hand-carved wooden face mask

Hanging beneath Ganesh on my wall is this slightly scary face mask which I picked up for the equivalent of about £3.50 in Pokhara. I particularly like the third eye in the middle of the forehead, which I think is a nod to the wrath of the Hindu God Shiva whose third eye opens to see the evils of the world…

Buddhist prayer wheel

More religious iconography, this time recognising the influence of Tibetan culture into Nepal from the displaced refugees who have set up villages and monasteries throughout the country. This prayer wheel opens up to reveal Buddhist scriptures and mantras which are chanted as the wheel is spun.

An Indian wall-hanging

To diverge away from Nepal, my greatest souvenir extravagance this summer was the above wall-hanging (£10.50) which I bought in Mandawa in the northwest of India. According to the vendor, it was hand-stitched by “gypsy women” over a period of several weeks.

I don’t doubt he was telling the truth, but maybe I do doubt his judgement (or his eyesight). As I walked into his shop he beamed at me and shouted “James Bond!”

News from Rigul, Kham, Tibet

Tibetan Welfare Project includes supporting the school in Rigul and the health clinic:

On 28.08.09 Ringu Tulku received the following news from Rigul:
“I received a phone call today from Khenpo Wangpel of Rigul Monastery. The Shedra of Rigul has now started. There was a big inauguration with Dulmo Choje Rinpoche as the Chief Guest. Over 800 monks and nuns attended the opening ceremony including high Rinpoches, Khenpos and Lamas. Thousands of people came for the teachings and blessings. The shedra buildings are complete with a hall which can accommodate around 1500 people. The old Temple is also fully renovated and both were inaugurated and blessed. Khenpo Zopa will be the main Khenpo who is a learned Geshe from Kirti Monastery. The Shedra started with 54 students. They have constituted a Shedra Committee with 15 monks. There will be a common kitchen and all students will be offered free food, lodging and education. They have started a shop to help finance the Shedra. This is fulfilling one of my dreams for a long time. We will soon receive some photos from Karsing and Lama Desing. Lama Desing is an old monk of Rigul Monastery who lives is Dehradun and Karsing is my uncle who were visiting Rigul at that time. Hope they can come back safely.
The school and Clinic are both running very well. 14 students from the school joined the Shedra. Of 54 students, 32 are from Rigul Monastery and the rest are from nearby monasteries including the Sakya Monastery across from Rigul.”
I send my best wishes and love and prayers,
If you would like to make an offering for the monks, the students and the monastery to commemorate this auspicious occasion please feel free to make a payment through Rigul Trust. For this please contact David, the treasurer, at info@rigultrust.org

News from Dehra Dun

We have now sent the funds to complete the building of 2 new classrooms at the Ling Gesar School, Manduwala, Dehra Dun. This school is not only for the Tibetan refugees but caters for all the Indian children in the surrounding poor villages. It was set up 20 years ago and before 2003 was near to closure due to lack of funds. Since 2003 a charitable trust in Germany has been set up under the guidance of Ringu Tulku: Bodhicharya Huttenried – Dharma-Tor Charitable Trust, Germany.
To help maintain and improve the education and health facilities, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche has also asked Rigul Trust, with its UK charity registration status, to help fund these projects.

News from Sikkim

Traditional Tibetan medicine (‘Sowa Rigpa’) and Himalayan medicinal plants ecology program – We are supporting a pilot project for growing medicinal plants in Sikkim meditation centre. We have sent some funds to pay for tilling the land and planting 3 medicinal plants Ruta, Titta and Manu as an experiment to grow Tibetan medicinal plants. Rahima, from Ireland is working hard in Sikkim with this project.
On 15th September Ringu Tulku writes:

News from Chichester May 15 to 18th 2009
RIGUL TRUST’S FIRST BIRTHDAY MAY 16TH 2009
When Rinpoche came to Sussex in May, we were so pleased that we were able to join with the wider group from Southampton, Sussex, London, Somerset and many other places to celebrate Rigul Trust’s 1st Birthday. David and Sue set up a photo presentation that Rinpoche kindly gave us his own commentary about Tibet, Sue was the in-house photographer, Jo made a huge Birthday cake, and Jude videod the presentation. Claire, Julie and Ilse ran the second hand bookstall, the plant stall and the raffle with all proceeds going to Rigul Trust, Margaret came up with the idea of a food mandala, Meriel, Maggie and lots of us helped set up the food mandala and organise the party. Pam made her tasty apple cake and lots of us offered yummy food for the food mandala.

Pat Little from Arklow writes:
The visit of Ringu Tulku was of course the highlight of the last few months here at Bodhicharya Ireland. We were also delighted to welcome Margaret Richardson and her team from Rigul Trust, who had brought a variety of display material on Rigul Trust Tibetan welfare projects and also books, photos of thangkas, liturgical objects such as malas etc. for sale to a genuinely interested public. We were able to contribute organically grown plants for sale, our combined efforts generating in total €397, every cent of which goes to Rigul Trust projects in the field. May they flourish as embodiments of Rinpoche’s spirit of wisdom and compassion. These attractive cards were on sale at Rinpoche’s teachings in Dublin, 100% of the proceeds go to fund Rigul Trust projects in the field.
News from Edinburgh: Albert Harris writes:
The Edinburgh group have recently raised £500 for the Rigul Trust. A good time was had by all at the barbeque from which we raised £255. Then there was the car boot sale at Greenside in Edinburgh. That brought in another £47. Albert and Fulmaya filled a flagon jar with the odd pennies and from that there was a total of £81. A further £25 was added from the donation towards photographs of Ringu Tulku Rinpoche with the long-life prayer kindly provided by Margaret Richardson. The rest was made up by individual donations from friends and family.
We wish Rigul Trust all the best and encourage others to take the initiative and raise more funds for the good work being carried out in Tibet and Dehradun welfare projects.
Dr Ken Burch from Thame, Oxfordshire writes:
Retirement was never going to be easy for me after 34 years in the same General Practice in Oxfordshire. Saying goodbye doesn’t come naturally but as for being attached…
Perhaps the thing I dreaded most was what to do with the farewell gifts. The patients I have known for so many years are always generous at Christmas. The book tokens are fantastic but what can you do with 37 bottles of sherry!
Then I had a blinding flash of inspiration for probably the first time in my life. Why not ask patients and colleagues who wanted to celebrate my retirement with a gift to donate money to my favourite charities instead.
Like many people in this world I owe a debt of gratitude to Ringu Tulku and by supporting the Rigul Trust perhaps I can pass on a portion of my miniscule merit to him. In this way we all win – the patients get to give me a present, I’m let off the hook and the folk at the Rigul project benefit. Sadly not every patient listened so I still have 17 bottles of sherry to find a home for!

October 24, 2009 Dear Friends,

My name is Huang Jing Rui, and I am honored to be newly appointed as the interim executive director of the Buddhist Literary Heritage Project (BLHP). The goal of this new initiative is to see all of the vast and extraordinary riches of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist literature, particularly the Kangyur and Tengyur, translated into English and other modern languages and made universally accessible within a hundred years.

Over the past few decades, many groups and individuals have been working with great dedication to translate a wide range of Buddhist teachings into English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, and other languages. The BLHP grew from the jointly expressed wishes of more than 50 such translators, teachers, and academics who met in Bir, India, in March 2009 at the Translating the Words of the Buddha conference.

Conceived as a project with its own activity and funding, and not simply as a forum for discussion, the BLHP clearly needs an effective organizational structure. At the Bir conference, the participants requested Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche to take on the interim responsibility of overseeing the establishment of the necessary structure.

In the six months since the conference, many interesting developments have taken place toward setting up that interim organizational structure, together with the key policies and strategic plans that will get the BLHP going. These steps include:

May: Planning meeting June: Editorial policy meeting July: Appointment of executive director and working committee July: Confirmation of two “proof of concept” pilot translations September: Four-day working committee planning meeting The Buddhist Literary Heritage Project will officially begin to operate in January 2010, managed by an interim working committee consisting of eight members:

Chair: Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

Executive director: Huang Jing Rui

Committee members: Ani Kunga Chodron, Gene Smith, Ivy Ang, John Canti, Steven Goodman, and Cangioli Che

The BLHP interim working committee is committed to an open, inclusive, and collaborative approach that seeks the involvement of Dharma teachers, translators, academics, scholars, and researchers from all segments of the Buddhist community. The BLHP has taken birth from the great aspirations of teachers, translators, and people like you, but it is still in its infancy. As we develop, learn, and move forward, we humbly seek your patience, understanding, and goodwill. Your ongoing support is absolutely necessary for the project to accomplish its objective of preserving and making available the precious teachings of the Buddha.

Finally, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all the past and present volunteers and donors, who have generously offered time, money, experience, expertise, effort, and goodwill to the BLHP. We look forward to your continued support.

Please feel free to forward this letter to anybody whom you feel might be interested in our project. Thank you.

Hi there.

I’m kicking back with some R. Carlos Nakkai and looking for inspiration in color and shape for “The Happy Ones.” The initial images are pumping out their little bits of light. Seeing how this is all an exploration I’m open to where my intuition leads me… Here are a few of the shapes, images, colors and ideas I’ve been browsing today.

It’s a pretty fluffy post but *shrugs* Im’ feeling pretty visual today and I’m adding images to my mental pallet for later.

<img class="size-full wp-image-530 " style="border:2px solid black;margin:5px;" title="Wiki_Chenrezig_Sand_Mandala" src="http://journeymirror.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/wiki_chenrezig_sand_mandala1.jpg" alt="Photo of a Chenrezig Sand Mandala created and exhibited at the House of Commons on the occasion of the visit of the Dalai Lama on 21 May 2008.
Tibetan Sand Mandala’s have always drawn me in. Most things Tibetan do.

I also found a little site on my search that shows the extensive construction of the Sand Mandala here at Ackland Online. Created and destroyed, they do not remain. The material life is transitory.

Jumping tracks…

Have you Googled the term “Blurred City Lights“? I felt like I was seeing this image or video in my head of a girl, dark short hair, riding in a car at night. The lights behind her are blurring out . Was that… Lost in Translation? I don’t know but the film comes to mind. Great stuff.
