80 days to go - GE Plaza at Robson Square is open!!

Wow! The opening of the GE Plaza at Robson Square was pretty special! I’m very glad that I got to be there for it. Catriona Le May Doan was the emcee. Premier Gordon Campbell, VANOC CEO John Furlong, GE Canada President and CEO Elyse Allan, and GE President of Olympic Sponsorship and Corporate Sales Peter Foss were all there to present the new rink to Vancouver. For me it was already wonderful at that point, but then Jeffrey Buttle came out to skate! It was beautiful!

The opening was fairly brief, but there were some great opportunities for photos, so I’ll mostly share those:

Hey! I found the Vancouver 2010 Ticket Box Office!

Apparently the Main Ticket Box Office just opened last Wednesday in the UBC Robson Square Bookstore. I will be adding it to my Vancouver 2010 Venue map. I will also add the Whistler Box Office which I’ve been told is due to open on Thursday this week.

It was a great morning! And I have to admit is was made even better when I had a chance to grab the Monday Metro and found that I had been quoted on the front page! Eeek! I hadn’t been expecting anything like that, it was awfully neat .

Edinburgh Council to consider making Hogmanay free

Street party could be opened to all as work on trams drags on into new year

Edinburgh council are considering plans to make the famous Hogmanay street party free next year, with plans to get rid of barriers and tickets.

This year, tickets cost £10, four times the amount of 2004. However, according to local councillor Steve Cardownie, the council is evaluating the possibility of ending ticketing for the event: “We could spend more money on the entertainment without the costs of paying stewards and put up cordons,” said Cardownie. He emphasised, however, that safety is paramount is their considerations, and if there was any indication that the event would be dangerous without the security, ticketing would remain.

Lothian and Borders said that they were in talks with the parties involved, and would take it from there, but refused to comment upon whether it would be a contentious issue for them.

Funding for the event comes from a mixture of sources, including from private sponsorship, grants and local taxpayers. Funding also comes from the ticket costs, so the issue of cost will clearly be an important consideration.

Not much has been officially decided yet, but a spokesperson for the City of Edinburgh Council said: “Every year we review the Hogmanay Event on a number of different levels and one of the things we look at is pricing. We haven’t started this process yet for 2010/11 because we are focussing our attention on making this year’s Hogmanay a great event for the many thousands of revellers who come from all over the world.”

300,000 people turned up for the events in 1996/7, but it was much more than the event could withstand, and many people were injured in the crowds. As a result, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay street party became a ticketed event. This year, however, the more modest number of 80,000 people are expected. Although it has been suggested that this is because of the wide variety of events available for party goers to chose from all over the country, some believe that the issue of the trams and the chaos of Princes Street has been putting revellers off coming; as one local resident put it: ‘Who want to celebrate the new year surrounded by scaffolding, diggers and holes in the road?”

A reasonable start

The day went quite well. No major disasters. A couple of annoying things, but nothing too dramatic. I’m down at the IT department in the morning. Really looking forward to that experience (not). I don’t know what it is about IT people. They are all nice guys, but I could not spend all day with them.

I managed to design the panto tickets and poster. The graphic I found looks quite good. I just hope the like it, and that there are not too many changes. From what I understand, they need to go to print this week, so if i need to make any changes, I’ll have to be quick. They have not given me any ticket prices, so that may mean an amendment to the poster. I will have to wait and see. Eldest is coming up for a rehearsal tomorrow night, so he can get some feedback then. I suppose the main criticism will come on Wednesday, when the director sees it. Wonder if they will need something for a t-shirt.

If the new tour is as good as the new album, the “Sonic Boom Over Europe: From The Beginning To The Boom” is going to be awesome! KISS is coming next Summer to Ireland, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Holland, France, Spain, Belgium and TWO gigs in Sweden.

But since both Lunki and me have been strapped for cash the last couple of decades I guess we have to make due with watching them live on Facebook (facebook.com/KISS) via a streaming link from their show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles at 9 pm PST on Wednesday, November 25.

We have put Johnny the Intern on a mission to solve the “no cash for KISS tickets” problem. He has until November 27 when the tickets go on sale.
