yes.

that helps.

how..

wait, is that the album?

ha yeah.

it’s not a distant saw-mill?

no.

{later}

it’s very interesting.

very interesting indeed.

I think.

somewhat…atavistic?

if that is the right word.

you tell me.

yeah, it’s the right word, it’s what I mean.

well, in places, not everywhere.

this dictionary site is super-helpful; –adjective of, pertaining to, or characterized by atavism.

hahaha

oh wait, here it is; reverting to or suggesting the characteristics of a remote ancestor or primitive type.

yes that’s it, do you get me now?

yeah I can see that, sure.

it’s not very original though.

there’s someone else who makes music just like this.

not that that matters a great deal.

the only problem with so many of these things, it fails to keep up the interest.

after a while you start to say ‘ehhh yeah ok, I’ve heard it now’.

it starts to disappear up it’s own arse basically.

I know that’s a nasty way of saying it but….

you know what I mean right?

maybe you just need to listen to it in a slightly different way, rather than as a whole album.

or maybe it’s…hmmmm.

{track 11: I Am Eustace}

here’s something different.

maybe they just got the sequence wrong?

One man, lots of synths, junkshop instruments, reverb. It’s cold, it’s desolate, it suits the view from my window, dead trees against grey nothing. But it’s good. Tonight the good folks at Foggy Notions have Mr. Kelleher and His Cold Dead Hands playing with Tickley Feather in Whelans. Wrap up warm.

Tickley Feather Hors d’Oeuvres •••• Paw Tracks Annie Sachs took on her present Tickley Feather

Tickley Feather
Hors d’Oeuvres ••••
Paw Tracks

Annie Sachs took on her present Tickley Feather nom de guerre in 2004 after realising that her singular musical style was just too atypical to work in anything other than a one-woman outfit. Despite being sought after by various wannabe collaborators, she embraced an independent, avant-garde approach and released her first album back in Spring 2008, a self-titled affair put out through Animal Collective’s own Paw Prints imprint. The zigzagging tendencies of the divergent, bizarre and inventive sounds assembled on that release continue on Hors d’Oeuvres, though somewhat more consolidated in their ambitions. The dense four-track layers of her previous work are blown up here, still very much DIY in nature but zooming in with a heady, glowing energy. The song structures offer Sachs’s idiosyncratic arrangements a slightly sturdier frame, sounding compact and contained in measured beat boundaries that recall more conventional genres.

If Sachs’s debut was a somewhat space-bound, star-filled mystery, Hors d’Oeuvres is a field of opening flowers, responding to some rushing warmth of light and joy. Recorded in a dilapidated farmhouse in the Shenandoah Woods of rural Virginia, the songs are larger and more melodic; every aspect of the instrumentation is filtered through an amplifying fuzz, from the beats and samples to the electro melodies and Sachs’s ever-ethereal, shimmering vocals that spiral through the songs like surfing spirits – blurry, reverberating waves of barely audible words that flow out towards the listener like currents of tone and sound rather then clear narratives. The ghostly sound effects that modulate her agile soprano stay soothingly strange and emotive rather then abrasive and hostile, spreading a warmth throughout the synthetically adjusted mediums which could so easily have translated into a clammy, robotic coldness. Every now and then a word or chorus becomes clear, reassuring us that Sachs is indeed speaking in an earthly language, but the overall effect is a stream-of-consciousness rhythm that should be trusted and enjoyed on intuition. Trying to transcribe, let alone dissect what she’s actually saying, would be to defeat the point.

Hors d’Oeuvres sways from experimental forays onto more reliable ground with adventurous spirit. ‘Club Rhythm’ could be a chillout dance track for forest ravers while ‘Tickley Plays Guitar’ clangs and clashes on a rather loud electric six-string, throwing in church bells at the close for good measure. ‘Sure Relaxing’ takes things into the deep with its bendy, space age vocals, though album opener ‘Muscles’ prepares the way cordially beforehand with trippy, cricket buzz modulations and curvy bass notes. ‘Roses Of Romance’ centres the album midway with some romantic, slow-burning electro, a kind of heart-thudding shoegaze that’s both sensual and melancholy, while standout track ‘Trashy Boys’ merges a pleasantly unusual beat with all the dark-wave glam of a Jesus & The Mary Chain bassline.

This very supple album sees Sachs growing as an artist, learning to intuitively follow her own leads and give a little more where she may have been previously elusive. Comparisons with other experimental, cross-genre pioneers CocoRosie are legitimate, but only in the loosest sense since the Tickley Feather sound is very much an original creation. Retaining the freshness of the debut and fleshing it out with an all-embracing, inspired energy, Hors d’Oeuvres should win over any would-be fans who were precariously undecided last year. In all, it’s a marvellously irregular album from an exceptionally creative artist.

‘Not A Drum’

By most people’s standards, Annie Sachs, aka Tickley Feather, goes a little off the compass. Originally from the wilds of rural Virginia before moving to Philadelphia, her self-titled debut snuck in quietly through the back door in 2008, its strange lo-fi noises and ghostly vocals beckoning for repeated listens, and your undivided attention. From spending four years putting her fragmented, spacey-folk sound together in her living room, to opening for Animal Collective and their newly solo member, Panda Bear, Sachs’s second full-length release, Hors D’oeuvres, will be creeping into the light on October 19th.

‘Not A Drum’ sees her return with a more accessible sound and a unsettling catchy hook; pop, but not in a wholesome sense. At all. The music-box chime coupled with the wave of distortion behind it gives it a kind of Baby-Jane-Hudson-by-the-Sea quality, with Annie’s delicate vocals wringing out in the distance for some added chills. An intriguing introduction to her new material; innocent with a hint of menace, as if Alice had followed the white rabbit, fallen down the hole and found a four-track recorder instead of an annoying Cheshire cat. Curiouser and curiouser indeed. MP3 after the jump.

America, and the rest of the world, is in the midst of one of the most significant economic recessio

America, and the rest of the world, is in the midst of one of the most significant economic recessions of modern times, and I believe the hard times, unemployment, uncertainty, anger, and frustration that is plaguing average citizens of the world, is going to result in a continued growth of lo-fi indie noise rock. Much like early punk rock represented an anti-establishment DIY aesthetic, lo-fi indie noise rock has the potential to define a currently frustrated indie-youth subculture.

The timing seems perfect, the metaphorical electro bubble, while not necessarily burst, has certainly been deflating. The vast quantities of DIY electro acts and music blogs to emerge between the release of Justice’s Cross (2007) and Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colors (2008) is impressive, but while a lot of enjoyable dance/party music has came out of the recent electro wave, it has gotten to the point where enough is enough, and a lot of music critics and music fans have found themselves SCREAMING FOR SOMETHING MORE ABRASIVE.

I know I’m not alone in this feeling. Two easy examples of music publications who clearly share this attitude are Pitchfork Media, and Gorilla vs Bear. Neither will dismiss great indie-pop/indie-electro/indie-disco (for the most part), but both have been pushing less accessible noise rock over the last 12 months.

Similar to how indie-pop (see Postal Service, The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, Super Furry Animals, Stars, The Pipettes, etc.) started loosing its dominance post-2005, electro/disco is starting to become a little less market dominant now (although for me dark-disco – ie. Glass Candy/Chromatics – still feels appropriate).

The bands that I currently have picked out for the “soundtrack to this depression” include No Age, Titus Andronicus, Vivian Girls, Dum Dum Girls, Wavves, and Times New Viking. These bands are not necessarily my personal favorites – although I love the Wavvves LP (2009) - but I believe they constitute a genre, a time, and a place in music that we’ll be able to look back at, and say “oh yah, I listened to indie-noise-rock when my Bachelor’s Degree couldn’t even get me a job as a burista, and I couldn’t fucking handle listening to another indie-pop/electro-bloghouse hit on the fucking Hype Machine.”

While the aforementioned noise-rock bands are the type of music that I’m really looking at here, I feel it would be selling this era of music short if I were not to mention indie-popular music from other genres that possess some of the lo-fi, harder to digest, less accessible aesthetics of noise-rock. Just to note, when I say lo-fi I’m referring more to an audio aesthetic than a recording technique.

Lower-fidelity rock acts like The Dutchess and the Duke gained popularity in 2008 (via Pitchfork’s Best New Music, surprise surprise), and indie-metal acts like Harvey Milk received a little more attention from not-so-metal music publications (but I still can’t relate to any metal, and I have a feeling a lot of indie-nerds feel the same).

Recently garage rock bands like The Strange Boys (a LaCinta favorite), The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (early-Sloan meets Exploding Hearts), and Cymbals Eat Guitars (Built To Spill meets early-Modest Mouse) have been received with excellent reviews.

The Black Lips are set to release their grimy new album 200 Million Thousand (2009), and they kicked off the online media frenzy with a series of bad ass stories from the band’s attempted India tour (which is probably being edited for VBS.tv as you read this).

Lo-fi psychedelic bands like Deerhunter, Atlas Sound, and Black Dice have seen increased attention over the last year, and newcomers like Pit Er Pat, Tickley Feather, and Blind Man’s Color have left strong first impressions.” The Pitchfork Twitter account (via Mark Richardson) recently tweeted, “Are my headphones in worse shape than I thought or did the new black dice come up on shuffle?” – and to me at least, that comes across as a huge compliment.

Even electro has had its share of lo-fi makeovers, with groups like Heartsrevotion and Pictureplane making danceable electro a little less accessible, and a little more noisy.

There have also been 8-bit electronic groups like Truckasauras and Dan Deacon taking the stage, and musicians like Nite Jewel have put a layer of dirty makeup over the typically polished electro/disco model.

Given the notable rise in popularity of noisy indie music, rockers like No Age becoming involved in skate culture and starting their own record label, and teenagers like Nathan from Wavves receiving unbelievable initial attention, it seems that – for the moment anyways – my prophecy of lo-fi indie noise rock becoming the soundtrack to this depression may just become reality.

“Got no car. Got no money. I got nothing nothing nothing not at all. Got no bike. Got no girlfriend. Got no time. Got no money. Got no friends. Got no family.” – Wavves

Just you watch, day by day you are going to become more attracted to feedback, and distortion, and emotions other than “let’s dance!” Times New Viking may sound like a hell-of-a-racket at first, but before long you’re going to be gritting your teeth, and banging your head, while you embrace the noisy racket. It only makes sense, because you’re probably going to be unemployed, in debt, pissed off, and totally lost any day now.

Here’s some link to MP3’s so you can start building your soundtrack to the depression (if you haven’t started already). Go ahead, a change in musical pace might be just what you need, and I mean what else are you going to do? Listen to MSTRKRFT’s abomination of a new electro album?!

You might not find the same level of decorum as you do on WVKR, but it offers a wide array of genres you won’t hear anywhere at else. WKDU also occasionally teams up with R5 Productions (see below), the city’s premier independent promoter, to put on solid shows. If you need a late-night sleepingpilladelphia, try the city’s most effective aural narcotic, locally produced and nationally syndicated Echoes on 88.5 WXPN, airing ambient spaced-out lullabies post-11PM.

If you’re looking for a cheap fix, browse the seemingly dinky 7” boxes for rare releases, first pressings, and otherwise sold-out little 45s hailing from all walks of life- major label to teeny tiny die Stasi to the Smiths. If those seven-inches just whet your appetite, maybe it’s time to upgrade to a full-size plate- how does 12-inches of audio victuals sound? Move to the vinyl room in the back, where the same array of obscure to totally obvious can be found in larger quantities. A recent browse yielded picks like Fabulous Diamonds, early Fleetwood Mac, hard-to-find Glass Candy, and Eat Skull, tucked in among all the big names- Akron/Family, Deerhunter, Of Montreal- the gang’s all there. The majority of the store is occupied by CDs, but they tend to err on the indie-rock mainstream side of the spectrum, though the used section is epic and worth browsing if you’re feeling patient.

Voici nos tops de l’année 2008:

Pacush Blues

Harvey Milk – Life…

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ __ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

_

22. These Are Powers – Taro Tarot EP : En apparence, du noise rock plutôt classique, certes.

Up, Up, Down, Down, L, R, L, R).

15. Atlas Sound – Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel : Bradford Cox a du talent.

Qu’entend-t-on sur Shrine to the Possessor ?

5- Atlas Sound : “let the blind lead those who can see but cannot feel” : Les boucles aquatiques et les sons cotonneux d’Atlas Sound noient magnifiquement les paroles de Bradford Cox dans ce premier album terriblement dépressif.

What phone should LaCinta get?

Due to “security concerns” beyond my control there are a few restrictions I must adhere to:

a) The phone must be black

b) It must have the technology 4 me 2 blog/Twitter/MSN/phone/text/email/surf the internet from it (so that none of my online friends get worried about me)

c) it must be with Rogers in Canada (trying to keep my ‘real’ whereabouts on the DL)

The phone also REALLY needs to:

a) be happy in my hand/pocket

b) make girls happy in their pocket when they see me with it

c) be happy on my pocket book

Tickley Feather
Tickley Feather ••
Paw Tracks

As a record released by the same label who currently take care of Animal Collective, the album which lands on my doormat early one morning in September already has fairly impressive indie credentials. The eponymous record is essentially a diary by solo artist Annie Sachs, who works under the pseudonym Tickley Feather, providing an outlet for her experiences as a new stay-at-home mother to young son Aiden over the course of several years. But don’t expect heartfelt acoustic mumblings or “isn’t [s]he lovely”-esque schmaltz. This is aural art in the truest sense. Listening to this album, recorded entirely at home on Sachs’s four-track recorder, is very much akin to falling through a wormhole, Malkovich style, into the mind of a confused psychopathic four year old, an effect only heightened by the vocal contributions made by her young son.

I will admit that, upon reading “Vocals on tracks 1, 6, 19 and 20 by Aiden” in the liner notes, I did not have high expectations for the record. ‘Another Brick In The Wall’ aside, children’s vocals on records are pretty much at the top of my cringe factor scale, right above panpipes and excessive harmonica. However, in this case, they are an absolute joy. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Aiden’s various musings on life (“There’s magic inside my bones somewhere”), which are given whole tracks of their own, are the best ’songs’ on the album.

Sadly, that is where the brilliance ends. I certainly whole-heartedly approve of Sachs’s dedication to music as high art but, in producing a record which might well be the polar opposite of the work of so many other mediocre ‘accessible’ solo artists, the album is almost totally unlistenable. A lot of this is down to the understandably poor quality of the recording and production, which has resulted in almost inaudible, completely incomprehensible vocals. Worse still, all the music is littered with unpleasantly high pitched, headache-inducing frequencies which makes listening to the album all the way through in one sitting totally impossible. In fact, I would liken it to the auditory equivalent of having a ‘tickley feather’ repeatedly run across the surface of my brain. Niggling. Uncomfortable.

Yet I don’t dislike what she’s trying to do here. Quite the opposite. I love the concept. I even feel a bond between Annie, Aiden and myself upon experiencing this record. But an experience is exactly what it is. And probably not one to be repeated. Don’t expect to put this on your iPod, folks. Hang it in a gallery.

Philadelphia may have been too dangerous for Will Smith on The Fresh Prince, but this town is boasting some choice musicians that make the risk worth it. Here are my choice picks from the city of brotherly love that are bound to get your toes tappin’ and fingers snappin’. Enjoy!

Man Man
This would be an obvious choice. I guess I’m more than a little obsessed with their live shows and their new album ain’t too bad, either. The only band that can pull off wearing all white, war-paint, and sequined headbands.

Spank Rock
I can never get enough of this Philly bro’s downright naaasty rhymes and bumpin’ beats. Yeah yeah I know, we are all soooo over Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.”, but everything is better with a little Spank, no?
Sometimes I just can’t handle all of the lo-fi goodness spewing from these two MC’s mouf’s. Totally in your face, totally name-droppin’ every ‘burb in Philly.

Pattern Is Movement
These two Philly gents have potentially put out my favorite record of 2008. Inspired by a set of antique photos, each track explodes with theatrical vocals, show tunes-esque piano, and polyrhythmic walls of sound.
This Philly lady’s lo-fi, FM Lite sound is crazy-awesome. Her vocals are slightly spooky, but the synth is oh-so-sweet.

The first time I heard Philadelphia’s Tickley Feather (or, Annie Sachs), I was seeing her open

The first time I heard Philadelphia’s Tickley Feather (or, Annie Sachs), I was seeing her open for Animal Collective in St. Louis this past September. I was really intrigued by the simplicity of her set and her overall ability to present experimental yet catchy tunes. Her self-titled debut album off of the Paw Tracks label perfectly translates what her live sound is composed of. Looping samples, keyboards, and drum machines piece together perfectly in combination with TF’s raw emotion expressed through her vocals. With 20 tracks–the vast majority under the 3:00 mark–Tickley Feather’s album is like a fucking charming, whimsical storybook or something. It makes me wonder if she deliberately crafted the perfect album to echo amazingly through my apartment. Her sound is out there, in the most beautiful way possible. Eerie nursery rhyme melodies and toy synths soar on tracks like “Nothing 2 B Sad About” and “Night Train”. There are times when I’m listening to her album that all of a sudden, a phat lo-fi beat blasts through my ears (see “Tonight Is The Night”), and my mind jumps to Madonna circa 1988 had she taken lots of acid instead of club drugs. Touted as the “Next Ariel Pink”, it seems that she indeed shares a lot in common with her Paw Tracks label-mate (who I am obsessed with, by the way) in terms of lo-fi production and tons of reverb in her vocals. Interpret that as you will, but I know this album is going to be a favorite of mine for quite a while.
