One of the neat things about Christianity is the way that it transforms the way you relate to other people.

How do you relate to other people if you are an atheist? Well, on atheism, there isn’t any way you ought to be that is independent of your own personal preferences. And there isn’t anyway other people ought to be, either. Instead, atheists tend to reduce relationships down to the level of making themselves happy. On an atheistic view, the purpose of life is to pursue happiness, and relationships with other people are just another part of pursuing happiness. Atheists will look at people as a means to help them achieve happiness in this life.

But things are different on Christianity. When Christians start to act on their belief that the Christian worldview is true, they have a completely different view of how they should relate to other people. Rather than trying to dominate them or using them for pleasure, we instead look at other people as God’s creatures who are made for a relationship with God. And this applies regardless of whether the person is ugly or pretty, young or old, short or tall, rich or poor. Everybody has to know God, and it becomes the Christian’s job to help with that.

Consider this post by Laura at GOP Refugee/Pursuing Holiness, where she explains how she’s had to put her own desires second in order to take a long-term, God-centered view of her relationships.

Excerpt:

There’s no time like the holidays to bring out the Jerry Springer in people. A time to gather, a time to remember… all those decades of past slights and offenses, real and imagined. We’re currently undergoing such a drama in my family. In years past, I would have enthusiastically engaged in it, fiercely defending my position and making a case to show why I’m right, dammit, and you need to [stop, start, resume] [behaving a certain way.] Over the years, my perspective has gradually changed as I slog through this pursuit of holiness. I’m less concerned with my own honor and more with God’s.

Wow! Go read the whole thing. This is something that Christians often struggle with that non-Christians never imagine is even an issue. Every day Christians deny their own desire to be selfish in relationships so that they don’t negatively impact other people’s vertical relationship with God. It’s hard for anybody to just let this interpersonal squabbles go unanswered. But we Christians have to consider what God wants in relationships. We don’t want to distract you non-Christians from the main issue of being reconciled with God through Christ!

Dear Dad,

Today marks one year. Shortly after, this project began and I wasn’t sure where this would really take me, but hoped it would take me somewhere much better than where I was. At the very least keep a relationship alive between you and me. My thoughts when beginning were to write a letter each day. Though I didn’t always have enough to really say anything with purpose for that sort of frequency and many times my busyness got in the way. Though I never went on without thoughts of you. My original intentions were to end this after a year, however I like this and what it’s doing for us. So, I’m trudging on, not sure really where it will all end up.

Today is also Thanksgiving. Seems appropriate today to revisit a few thoughts thrown into the box I left you about a year ago.

I am thankful:

that you were able to walk me down the aisle. The worth of that wedding with Eric was worth so many times over what was paid. It meant the world to me to have you there and see that I was finally, really going to be ok.

that you were able to meet and know Lexi. I think there was some healing between you and me that began with her.

for our fishing trips. Just you and me. Those are some of the best days I’ll ever have. And for you always putting the worm or cricket on my hook, even when you knew I was capable of doing it. I just didn’t want to touch it or get the dirt and guts on my fingers. I never really went fishing to fish anyway.

for the knowledge of what it feels like to be daddy’s little girl. Really. I know and can remember what it was like being three and wanting nothing more than to be just like you. And I also know what it feels like to have someone look at me like I was nothing less than their world. I hope everyone feels that special at least once in their life.

for you giving me my “Peanut” nickname and thinking it was funny that I always pronounced it “pea-puht”. I associate you and peanuts always. Especially boiled peanuts.

for the “You are my Sunshine” song. I still remember you signing that to me in the morning while you shaved, before taking me to preschool every day. It’s one of my most favorite songs still today.

for the person inside you that purserviered even when I wasn’t able to see it while you were here. I unfortunately have a much different and deeper understanding of your path now. And I wish I would have spent less time looking at how far I thought you needed to go and saw more of the lengths of the actual leaps you had already taken.

Happy Thanksgiving Dad. Please tell Poppy I hope he had a wonderful birthday today.

-Tiff

Dear Dad,

Last year, the day before Thanksgiving my heart was brokenly set free, for you and with you. I hope it was a peaceful day and transition for you. While and when you left, I quietly asked (really I begged) Granny to help you and make things ok. Though I’m sure you didn’t need any of that. I knew you’d be fine. I still feel some guilt when I’m having a good time somewhere where you’d normally be. Forgetting that you don’t have to physically be there in order to actually do so. If I do my part in keeping this relationship going, I’d see and know you were there. You’re always there. I also sometimes feel guilty for things not being where I was expecting they should be (at one time), in relationship to Mom. Though when I take a step back and look at things, it’s ludicris to think that I’d be able to walk in and change things for her or make anything better. It’s just an unreasonable expectation. And to think that my thoughts on how things or people should be, are or is the only correct way, is selfish and very closed-minded.

I’ve grown because of these things within the past year.

I’ve learned a lot about acceptance. Of others, as well as myself. It’s such a welcomed surprise to know that I’m still learning from you, where ever it is that you are. It’s continued validation for me that what ever this is that I’m doing right now with these letters or the conversations we have, which could hold an arguable existence, are very real.

As always, I miss you and hope everything is wonderful for you.

-Tiff

The current version of libtiff, a widely used C library for processing TIFF images, is found on remotesensing.org. The domain libtiff.org used to belong to the people who maintain libtiff but doesn’t any more. The holder of the domain claims to be “Lib Tiff” in Ottawa. It’s not a fraud or malware site, but it has an outdated version of libtiff. I don’t know what the domain holder’s game is, and I’m not sure anyone does. I can’t even see how it’s making money; maybe it has popups which my browser is suppressing?

Anyway, I got curious about how various search engines would do when I searched for “libtiff.” Here’s the rundown:

Google puts libtiff.org in first and second place and remotesensing.org in third, and it has numerous subsidiary links inits listing of libtiff.org.

Ask.com does the same, minus the subsidiary links. The fourth-place item is the Wikipedia entry, which correctly lists remotesensing.org (Google puts it fifth).

Yahoo puts remotesensing.org in first place, and the bogus site doesn’t show up at all on the first page of results.

Clusty.com puts remotesensing.org in first and the cheap imitation in second.

Dogpile puts the mutt first and the purebred down in eleventh place.

Alltheweb.com puts remotesensing.org first and doesn’t show the imitator in the first page of results.

It’s not clear exactly what this proves, except that the big names don’t always do the best.

One of the films that garnered considerable buzz at the Toronto International Film Festival was The

One of the films that garnered considerable buzz at the Toronto International Film Festival was The Men Who Stare At Goats. Prior to seeing this movie I was ambivalent towards the film’s main actor, George Clooney. The Ocean’s trilogy is decent and Clooney manages to straddle the line between likeable and smarmy. I’m really not even holding Batman and Robin against him. So, before seeing this movie I had no preconceived notions that could possibly influence my viewing.

The movie follows a young journalist named Bob Wilton, played by Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting), who is on the verge of uncovering the biggest story of his undistinguished writing career. He stumbles upon a story involving a secret military unit, composed of psychic spies, who have been trained to use their minds as weapons. They can allegedly walk through walls, make themselves invisible, and use remote viewing to find anything in the world. Lyn Cassady (George Clooney) is a member of this group and allows Wilton to accompany him into Iraq. The film uses flashbacks to show the development of the psychic spies and this is the only real interesting part of the story. The rest of the story is a meandering waste.

This movie is supposed to be a satire. Unfortunately, it isn’t biting at all. They use jokes that were funny 40 years ago when Stanley Kubrick used them in Dr. Strangelove. I can appreciate when movies allude to other great films of the past, but nothing indicated these jokes were anything more than cheap knock-offs. While the movie is absurd, it isn’t funny at all. I tried to laugh at this movie. I gave it a chance. I may have experienced one true laugh throughout the movie, but the rest were forced. Eventually, I just stopped trying and allowed my natural reaction of boredom to take over. This movie was horribly boring. The plot never really seems to go anywhere and when it finally reaches its climax all I felt was a welcomed relief of finality.

One thing about this movie that drove me insane was the continued reference to Jedis. The psychic spies were continually referenced as Jedi warriors. Most of the time this happened in the presence of Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels. The brilliant writers even crafted a line where McGregor asks what a Jedi warrior is. You know they just gave each other high-fives when they came up with that one. Get it guys!? It’s because he is a Jedi! Way too self-aware for my tastes and not even funny.

I cannot lay any fault at the feet of Ewan McGregor. The man saved the Star Wars prequels from being complete wastes, so I cannot say a bad word about him. However, my friends couldn’t get past his horrible American accent. I guess I just blocked it out. Furthermore, this might be the point where I turn on George Clooney. I was leaning towards thinking he was a smarmy snake trader and maybe this movie confirmed it.

That’s it. I don’t really even have enough hate to write anything more about this movie. It was really just a waste of time. Not even bad enough to give a good lashing.

If you like film, crowds, excitement, and traveling you can visit many famous film festivals. If you are lucky some will be right in your own backyard.

The top five film festivals are:

The Sundance Film Festival in Utah, founded by actor/director/producer Robert Redford. The beauty of this festival is you will see independent films as well as more high profiled ones.

The Cannes Film Festival (travel package info included in link) is one of the most prestigious film festivals. The world’s elite grace this Red Carpet in Cannes, France.

The Berlin International Film Festival or in German, Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin is also considered one of the world’s leading film festivals.

The Toronto International Film Festival or TIFF is a huge event in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Over 300,000 people attend this festival. The tickets are a bit of a headache to get. I personally think it is a “red-tape” nightmare. However, if you can endue their archaic process of buying tickets, picking films and attending them, then you will have a great time.

The Venice Film Festival or Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia in Italy is (according to Wikipedia) “one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals and is part of the Venice Biennale, a major biennial exhibition and festival for contemporary art.”

There are also local film festivals that may be available in your area. In my area, there is the Ancaster Film Fest (blogspot link) which, is tied in with the Toronto Film Festival. It is a great event for people who live in the Hamilton, Ancaster, and surrounding areas. It has however, grown enormously in size. It has increased in attendance so much that they have made an additional time for patrons to view all the films. One showing is usually at 4:00PM and the other is at 7:00PM. At least for the 7:00PM showing it is advisable to get there two hours earlier to get a decent seat. They show their films on a Monday night in Ancaster, at Showcase Cinema in the Meadowlands.

I did enjoy the earlier years of the Ancaster Film Fest when it was a smaller, more personal experience, however, they have some great films. If you are willing to take the time to get a seat, you will enjoy the film experience. They even have guest speakers who may have produced, acted in, or directed the films.

If anyone has been to any of these festivals, I’d love to hear about your experiences.

Dear Dad,

Lots has been going on lately. Lexi was kicked out of her school because of the address and I’m fighting to keep her there. Tomorrow is my last fighting chance before I’ve got to withdraw her. I really hope all goes well. Really she’s within the school’s residential boundary now that Dre has moved across the street from the school. Eric and I are trying to buy some property. I saw that a house that I’ve loved for a while is now listed a short sale. We called about it this weekend while we’re trying to process the loan, and an offer has already been made. My heart broke a little. Though it was mended when we found a house not far away, and within the school district that is closer to our price range. Honestly I think it’s a little more us. It’s smaller, but I think will fit us a little better. I’m excited. I hope all works out with this one. I think we had a good weekend. Halloween was fun. James came over with Daniela, Dora and Hector with the kids and all went trick or treating together. Lexi was the tooth fairy this year. She came up with the idea all on her own, though I helped her a little with execution ideas. I think it went over really well. On Sunday we had our normal Mills Market breakfast and then took Lola-Bacon to The Wetlands Dog Park. I think she enjoyed it and I got some decent pictures out of it all.

Dear Dad,

Took some pictures of James, Daniela and the baby on Saturday morning. I’ve been editing them a lot of yesterday and a little tonight. I hope they like them. I’m worried that they won’t. They’re very much my style. I just know that my style is more documentary and less portrait-y. Went with Eric to a festival for one of our clients and ended up having a great conversation with someone at the bar. She was in the area attending a writing conference. I could tell she was a writer even before she told me. It was written all over her. Though if you asked me how, I couldn’t give you a clear cut answer. It was just everything. She reminded me of one of the neighbors that lived next to us in the very first apartment where Eric and I lived together. I think it was because I found a similar sort of look in her eyes that was very much like the neighbor. A little sad, but also very willing to connect with the world and with people. A look that says they’ve got a lot of stories that are begging to be told. She had longer hair with some grey in it, that she wore almost with honor. Though once she told me that she was a writer, I immediately thought of Paula. I always do. The two just fit together in my head. She seemed to move around a lot, which gave me such a Paula connection. Though I think mostly I thought of Paula because I was just out meeting people like she and I used to do. And it was fun. I had a Paula afternoon….or a least a Paula couple of hours.

Możemy więc manualnie i zgodnie z intencjami: wyostrzyć fotografię lub wygładzić, odpowiednio “dograć” balans barwny, skorygować kolorystkę ujęcia, poziomy, parametr gamma itp.

Dear Dad,

Had another really wonderful weekend. Stayed out late on Saturday night. Late like it was me and Paula a few years ago. It felt good while it was going on but it forced me to waste my Sunday morning, by staying in bed instead of getting out to breakfast. Eric and I finally peeled ourselves out of bed in the afternoon so that we could make it to a friend’s house for some good Sunday Funday times. I don’t think I could have had a better time. They totally did the whole shrimp boil right. I knew it from the moment the newspaper got spread out over the table. Instantly made me think of you and like I was a kid again. Eating crab that was dumped right onto middle of the newspapered table. I love those days. I loved today.

I had an opportunity to watch this documentary by Xiaolu Guo during the Toronto International Film Festival. Actually, it was more like, my friends and I weren’t able to get the tickets we wanted so we settled for this, but I’m glad it worked out that way.

This documentary is unconventional. It does without montages, sappy emotional music, and it leaves the director and film’s stance on a political issues, the aftermath of Mao’s reign in China, ambiguous. In place of the usual documentary characteristics, Guo splits this documentary into twelve chapters of interviews, each with an introduction by chinese children reading moral stories out of a Chinese textbook. The interviews range from a peasant farmer to a business man to a youngster working at a gas station to a woman running a noodle shop to a security guard of a mall and park. The individuals of each interview reveals their perspective of Post-Mao China and their hopes, dreams, and regrets.

Even though Guo doesn’t specify her personal view through this documentary, one thing that she highlights through the varied interviews is the depth of emotional complexity that China as a country has gone and still goes through. It forces the viewer to not generalize and simplify matters.

The cinematography of this film was mostly shot with a handycam style. This style, though nauseating at times, brings out a raw emotion of the people. It gives the impression that Guo didn’t want to use flair and elaboration to hide anything. To clearly present her personal odyssey into discovering the labyrinth of emotions of her home country.

This is an unique documentary that explores with it’s audience the truth of the matter and in doing so enlightens all those involved.

0

Since I was fourteen I have been obsessed with movies, so of course, after moving to Toronto, I found myself my new favourite holiday: The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). For any dedicated cinephile it’s better than Christmas. This year I broke my record and saw 44 films in 10 days (Sept 10-19/09) while also working the festival which led to about 3-5 hours of sleep every night. There are still about 100 films I missed that I would have loved to have seen but you can’t be in two places at once. C’est la vie.

For those of you who aren’t familiar, TIFF is the largest public film festival in the world. It’s kind of like putting kids loose in a candy store or trying to ride as many rides as you can at Disneyland before close, except Disneyland has nothing on TIFF.

0

George Clooney at the Premiere of 'Up in the Air'

0

Does Disneyland have George Clooney? I think not.

0

I am there for the movies but if you can see celebrities along the way, why the hell not? At work I don’t take pictures of actors unless it’s to photograph their characters relationship to the set or for sets and props continuity but during TIFF I become an amateur paparazzi. All photos in this post were taken by me. It becomes a game in and of itself: How many celebrities can I spot?

Anyhow, this years festival was wonderful and I saw some amazing gems that I hope everyone gets to see and of course some I’d rather forget. Now that I’ve had a good month to ponder the films I devoured at this years TIFF I feel more comfortable reviewing them. So here now is Part I of my TIFF Movie Review Wrapup. Enjoy!

This was his first visit to Canada and I never thought I would actually ever get to meet him. I did and he was lovely. I became a little verklempt which rarely happens to me but this was different.

0

1) An Education 4/5

Director: Lone Scherfig

Country: United Kingdom

Starring: Carey Mulligan as Jenny, Peter Sarsgaard as David, Alfred Molina as Jenny’s father, Dominic Cooper, Olivia Williams, Rosamund Pike, and Emma Thompson

Set in a London suburb in 1961, sixteen year old Jenny dreams of a different life for herself. One that doesn’t involve her father forcing her to do schoolwork 24/7 so she can get into Oxford- his dream, not hers. She wants to see the world and read interesting books and go to interesting clubs and live life to the fullest in Paris. Life takes an unexpected turn when she meets David, a much older man who can sweet talk just about anybody into doing anything, even Jenny’s father. David lives the life Jenny wishes she had. He makes her dreams come true by sweeping her off her feet to Paris and taking her to interesting places and buying her expensive things but when Jenny starts to question how he is able to afford all this she starts to realize nothing is what it seems. I don’t want to spoil the rest so I won’t say much more about the story.

Written by Nick Hornby (of High Fidelity and About a Boy fame) based on a memoir by Lynn Barber, I fell in love with this film despite its commercially broad appeal. We may know to some degree that this may end tragically but Nick lets the characters tell this story so impeccably with his trademark wit, humour, yearning, and sadness. We don’t care if we can foresee the inevitable outcome but we just want to take the ride with this lovely girl as she comes of age and explores the idea that an education will take her further than a man ever could.

I really loved the theme that seemed to be quite prevalent in the 1960’s: Education/Independence vs Marriage/Dependence. This movie was everything Mona Lisa Smile tried to be but failed miserably.

I also loved the costume design. It was spot on with all the right 1961 trends and looks that are timeless and classic. Jenny’s change is quite substantial and the costume design along with the production design really emphasizes her two worlds. Tartan school uniforms to elegant cocktail dresses and loads of eyeliner. Great stuff.

Willem Dafoe at 'Antichrist' Premiere

0

2) Antichrist 4/5

Director: Lars Von Trier

Country: Denmark/Sweden/France/Italy

Starring: Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg

The story revolves around a couple who’s toddler climbs out of his crib and jumps out of a window to his death while they (the couple) are having sex in the other room which Von Trier chooses to show explicitly. Symbolism abound in this Tarkovsky-esque film, the wife collapses at the funeral and spirals further into grief and despair. The husband decides to care for his grieving wife as he is already a psychologist. He plies her with pop psychology techniques which Von Trier himself has made known he hates pop psychology. In one exercise he figures out which place would give her the most anxiety and brings her there to deal with her fear and anxiety head on. This place is their cottage in the woods called “Eden”. Here, things go from bad to worse and I won’t tell you much more only that if you watch this film don’t eat before it because your stomach will turn. From this point on it’s practically torture porn. There are some beatings, a screw into a leg, and not to mention most disgusting of all genital mutilation. All of this is graphically and explicitly shown. I guarantee you’ve never seen anything like it and you won’t know what to think after it. In the end, what is the film about? Women and nature are the Antichrist could sum up what I think Von Trier was going for.

You may have noticed I rated this film well. Originally when I came out of the theatre I would have given it 3/5 just for shock value but after sitting on it I continue to be haunted and think about this film and what it was trying to say. Was it wild in getting it across? Yes. But was it successful in doing what it wanted to do? Yes. So overall I recommend this film to those who can stomach it. If you enjoyed the film Martyrs you might enjoy this film.

As a side note as well the cinematography and production design perfectly created this anti-reality where I thought Von Trier may fail but the most pleasing thing about the film is its visual look although I could have went without some of the shaky camera movement sometimes.

0

3) Jennifer’s Body 3.5/5

Director: Karyn Kusama

Country: USA

Starring: Megan Fox as Jennifer, Amanda Seyfried as Needy, J.K Simmons, Adam Brody, Johnny Simmons as Chip, and Amy Sedaris

Written by Juno scribe, Diablo Cody, this story also revolves around quirky words and teen angst but this time the characters are out for blood. Jennifer and Needy play BFF’s who are complete opposites. Jennifer is sexy and slutty; Needy is pretty but shy and bookish. Needy has a steady boyfriend named Chip while Jennifer chooses to play the field. One night they go together to the local crap bar where some emo punk band is playing. Jennifer decides to ‘get with’ the lead singer (Adam Brody) even after Needy exposes he only wants her because he thinks she’s a virgin (which she is most definitely not). A fire breaks out before anybody can go home with anybody and Jennifer and Needy miraculously survive with the band as many locals perish. Jennifer still goes home with the band despite her better judgment. Nothing is the same after this. Jennifer turns into a ravenous man-eating teen vampire and hilarity and scares ensue. Needy is left to figure it all out and save the day. This go around she won’t be letting Jennifer take control not to mention, eat her boyfriend.

All of this said you must be thinking wow, what a predictable piece of garbage. Predictable, maybe, but damn it was fun to watch and I hate vampire movies. Diablo’s writing and Kusama’s playful direction made these ladies badass, funny and hip all at the same time. Before the film Kusama had said the film was a cross between Carrie and Heathers and she wasn’t lying. I enjoyed this film for all of those reasons. I also went into it with zero expectations so that may have helped. Amanda Seyfried was pitch perfect as always and the perfect antithesis to Megan Fox’s dim-witted bubbly super-bitch. Megan was a bit of a one-note but it worked for this role. All in all a fun film but won’t be up for any awards other than MTV of course.

4) The Happiest Girl in the World 2/5

Director: Radu Jude

Country: Netherlands/Romania

Starring: Andreea Bosneag, Vasile Muraru, Violeta Haret Popa, and Serban Pavlu

The story centers around Delia, a year short of high school graduation, who wins a car in a mail-in contest for a juice company. In order to receive this prize car all she has to do is act happy in a juice commercial. More obstacles lie in her way though since her parents have already planned for the sale of her car without her consent, which they don’t need, because she is under eighteen. Delia’s parents want to use the money to expand their business since they have recently fallen on hard times. Delia protests the car is hers to decide and she wants it so she can travel and use it for College.

I found the premise intriguing but in fruition I was less than pleased. Although I think my own bias killed the film once I realized we were going to spend the duration of the film on the set of a commercial. I hate commercial sets for all the reasons the film made apparent. They are boring and completely void of creativity and feeling and advertisers are often idiotic and dim. Now having said this not all are like this and I try and associate myself with good companies but for the most part I stay away from commercials altogether. Which is why watching a commercial set for almost two hours was more like nails on a chalk board. The story was also so excruciatingly simple that it didn’t lend itself to any further thoughts other than the life on this commercial set. By the end I liked Delia and the fight she had in her to not take no for an answer but it was painful getting to that point. I am a huge fan of the new wave of Romanian cinema but this was sub-par. Wish I could say it was better.

5) Cleanflix 2.5/5

Director: Andrew James and Joshua Ligairi

Country: USA

With: Daniel Thompson, Ray Lines, and Neil LaBute

Cleanflix is a documentary about a company who took it upon themselves to start editing violence, sex, and anything else they deemed inappropriate out of Hollywood films for the Mormon community. In the late eighties Mormon prophets began to ban Mormons from watching R-rated films as they believed it corrupted the mind once viewed. Thus ‘Clean Flicks’ opened up business in the late nineties, when editing software became user-friendly, editing The Matrix, Titanic and other popular films that Mormons felt they were missing out on. Other companies took note and started doing this as well but broke the rules that Clean Flicks made clear so no laws were broken: edits and rentals must be on a buy one, rent one basis with no mass copying of discs. Once the law was officially being broken Hollywood was able to swoop in and take down each company one by one. Filmmakers made their opinions clear and headed out to dissolve all censoring companies. Problem is just like Internet movie pirating, once it is started it is very hard to stop it and monitor new companies.

I really loved the premise of this documentary and it was one of the first films I put on my list as a must-see but the film left me cold with what felt to me like an amateur rough cut. The filmmakers even admitted they were editing the film down to the last minute before TIFF. It would have been fine had they stuck to the issue of morals and censorship but instead halfway through the film it no longer becomes a film about ‘Clean Flicks’ the company, and they choose to follow one of the copycat censurers, Daniel Thompson who had his own sex scandal in a censored video store himself. We gain nothing out of following this man because we don’t really sympathize with him nor really care what happens to him. Had they brought the film back to the issues at hand I would have felt better about the film. Also it didn’t help when the quality of the cinematography was weak as was some of the animation. I really wished it was better but it was mediocre at best. However, the strength of the original concept and theme were enough for me to give it 2.5/5.
