Leider war das Konzert viel zu schnell vorbei. Knapp eineinhalb Stunden haben die werten Herren von Tiger Lou musiziert, dann ging das Licht im KFZ auch schon wieder an. Schade! Gerade, da dieses Konzert auch erst einmal das letzte für geraume Zeit sein wird:

Disband the band?

Just wanted to make one thing clear to all y’all: Tiger Lou is NOT going to brake up. We are simply going to take a long brake for a couple of years, in order to pursue some of the other options our lives might have to offer. I found this clip on YouTube the other night, and thought it might be a good thing to clear this up. It feels cheap to let people think that our next three shows are going to be our last, as they are not. I have a lot of new Tiger Lou songs in the works, and have every intention of recording them one day. Just not now. I’m in a desperate need to do something else, as are the rest of the band. So, please come join us for these three shows, but know that they are not going to be shows of farewell, but rather shows of warmth and welcome. That’s all people. See ya there!

Om jag och brorsan äter middag en måndag till har det blivit en tradition. Nice, jag gillar traditioner. Vi snackade så klart om up and coming bands och några gamla godingar. Vi var rörande överens om att Tiger Lou har format oss alla på ett eller annat sätt. Efter lite reflekterande kom jag på idén att lista tio av de viktigaste albumen i mitt liv. Sådana där som format ens bana lite.  Vissa är mer oväntade än andra (och jag fliker redan här in att jag lyssnar en hel del på klassiskt och annat också). Men följande har jag starka minnen av:

Platz 10: Pau Casals mit “El Cant del Ocells”.
Bis vor kurzem hatte ich keinen blassen Schimmer, dass es einen Cellisten namens Pau Casals gab. Dank der Recherchen zu einem Referat für ein Seminar über Katalonien weiß ich jetzt ein bisschen besser Bescheid. Pau Casals, ganz großes Tennis.

Platz 9: Tiger Lou mit “Sam, As In Samantha”. “So turn off your phone and bring some sheets, this is a place where young lovers meet, this is all, all we need.”
Episch. Mit der richtigen Menge Traurigkeit und Verzweiflung. Super.

Platz 8: Rufus Wainwright mit “Barcelona”. “Nothing really does compare to Barcelona.”
Noch knappe drei Monate, noch knappe drei Monate. Aufbruchstimmung!

Platz 7: Dobie Gray mit “Drift Away”. “And when my mind is free, you know a melody can move me. And when I’m feelin’ blue, the guitar’s comin’ through to soothe me.”
Ich will auch so ‘nen Afro wie Dobie!

Platz 6: Lax’n'Busto mit “Més Que La Meva Sang”. “No, no, no tinguis por, desitjar-me no és dolent.”
Rock’n'Roll, baby, rock’n'roll! Lax’n'Busto haben übrigens auch ein sehr empfehlenswertes Live-Album im Angebot.

Platz 5: Sportfreunde Stiller mit “Ein Kompliment”. “Ich wollte dir nur mal eben sagen, dass du das Größte für mich bist.”
17 16 again. Die Zeitmaschine funktioniert!

Platz 4: Björk mit “Jóga”. “And you push me up to this state of emergency, how beautiful to be! State of emergency, it’s where I want to be.”
Bisher, das heißt mittlerweile jahrelang, konnte ich mich nicht entscheiden, ob ich “Jóga” oder doch eher “So Broken” lieber mag. Nachdem ich jetzt aber die Version vom PS22 Chorus gesehen habe, steht es 1:0 für “Jóga”.

Platz 3: Christina Metaxa mit “Firefly”. “Jump, take a leap of faith.”
Klingt wie Emilia, nur besser.

Platz 2: Mando Diao mit “Gloria”. “Gloriaaaaa.”
Superduperhyperfantastischsexyschwedische Gitarrenmusik. Ich liebe das offizielle Video im 60er-Jahre-Stil.

Platz 1: Emiliana Torrini mit “Jungle Drum”. “My hands are in the air, yes, I’m in loooove!”
Immer wieder verwunderlich, was so eine TV-Sendung ins Rollen bringen kann.

I lördags besökte jag och min älskade Sebastian Kulturbolaget för att kika och lyssna på Tiger Lou. När vi närmade oss KB blev vi dock lite oroliga. Ingen kö ringlade utanför och inga steroidpumpade vakter syntes till. (Avsaknaden av vakter gjorde ändå Sebbe glad. Han har inte direkt kommit överens med dem den senaste tiden. Mest för att han varit allmänt full och odräglig.)

Nåväl. Inne på KB var det heller inte mycket som skvallrade om att det var konsert på gång. Det var helt enkelt pinsamt lite folk på plats och det strömmade tyvärr inte till så värst många fler innan bandet äntrade scenen. Därför blev det också lite omedvetet roligt när Rasmus Kellerman skanderade ”I don’t feel like a sell out” i kvällens andra låt.

Trots att det var ungefär lika lite folk på Kulturbolaget som dödsoffer i svininfluensan bjöd Tiger Lou ändå på en grymt bra spelning. I stort sett alla mina favoritlåtar avverkades i en frisk blandning av gammalt och nytt material. Sedan ska killen som såg ut som en längre version av Tore Kullgren, och dansade lika koordinationsstört som jag förmodar att Tore Kullgren gör, också ha en näve cred för en riktigt trevlig kväll!

Det kan verka väldigt sunt och avkopplande och rent av mysigt att ta en 40 minuter lång cykeltur hem mitt i natten. Men med en feberfylld vecka bakom sig, en tunn vindtygsjacka med trasigt blixtlås på sig och en kylande havsbris mot sig är det en riktigt jävla dålig idé…

Sitter framför datorn och huttrar nu och knaprar fiskpinnar med dillsås. Var inne i stan med min älskade Sebastian och såg Tiger Lou på Kulturbolaget. Väldigt, väldigt bra spelning men väldigt, väldigt lite folk. Får se om jag orkar fixa ihop en liten konsertrecension imorgon. Nu ska jag i alla fall sova. Natti!

Been quite busy since I got home. Came home around 1 am. Was so awake after all the traveling so i didn’t fall asleep until around 3-4 am.

Tuesday: Got up at around 7am to get ready to go out and shoot for the 30 second long commercial. Called PiteBo about an apartment, the one I thought of first didn’t work out, so of to the second choice. Called the guy that lived there and then head down to Ankars to look at the apartment. I liked it, got home and said yes I want it. Had got a package form my dear friend form the States. Though the postman didn’t really think that my little opening is smaller than he has when he put the mail into the boxes. He have two doors to open we just have this small gap so had some problems getting the box out of there. Somewhere me and Sofia found some time to head down to COOP and do some grocery shopping. I ended up coming home with, Pineapple, Kiwi, Passion fruit, Mango, Pomegranate, Lemons, Orange and blood grape juice and milk. Before i went to bed I made me some fruit salad to have for lunch the next day. Damn I miss Marks & Spencer.

Wednesday: Had class at 10.00am YEY. Got a phone call form PiteBo that said I got the apartment. So when I got to school I went to one of the administrators for the school to send PiteBo an letter that said that I was indeed a student at LTU. Got to TV Production class and was going to edit the commercial, or that was what me and Sofia thought. Instead it had been something wrong at the camera which had ended up destroying the tape that we were filming so we could not get any clips form the camera to the computer. Which means that me and Sofia need to re-shoot EVERYTHING! Just my darn luck. Got home and did a storyboard for Coalitions by Tiger Lou. Ended the evening with watching 2 episodes of My So Called Life.

Thursday: Got to school, sat down and did some stuff in After Effects. After lunch we presented our ideas/storyboards to the teacher and the rest of the class. Some really have great ideas. Got home at 4:30pm. Thought the contract to the apartment would have come today, but no. Took a chill day today and didn’t do much. Watched some TV, took a nap. At around 8pm I started on a new drawing. Tiger Lou’s music really gets my creative mind going. Still trying to find my style on that department. I got one when it comes to illustrations I guess though and trees. But I don’t wanna do trees for the rest of my life. And well, about 30 min ago I started the computer and here I am writing all of this.

and I’m not there.
Why did I miss them when they were in Umeå?

Nu ska jag försöka sätta mig ner och läsa mina 30 sidor i samhälle som jag har tills imorgon men egentligen orkar jag inte läsa om demokrati och diktatur.
Mitt huvud är tomt och gör ont.

The Loyal – Tiger Lou. (2005)

Rock band based out of Sweden.
The band was formed in 2001 by Rasmus Kellerman. On the albums, Kellerman sings and plays nearly all of the instruments himself, but when playing live he enlists the help of Erik Welen, Mathias Johansson and Pontus Levahn.
Kellerman wrote this about the album on the band’s website:
“On ‘The Loyal’ we have used the old ‘cut and paste’ method to an extent, but have also added a lot of ‘live and uncut’ elements to try and blend the two. All the vocals consists of two takes, one in the left speaker and one in the right, a method that was brought to my attention by the late Elliott Smith. It creates a very eerie and panoramic feeling that works really well with the songs and theme of the album.”

The Loyal is one of those albums that makes me feel like hiding underground. It’s deep, dark in places, and raspy like a well-worn tunnel. I could sleep inside the melodies and dream of the springtime.

Esse ano foi foda. Não em quantidade (pelo menos para mim), mas esse ano eu foquei mais na qualidade e acabei me apaixonando por discos mais antigos, descobrindo coisas novas-velhas sem me importar muito com o volume de discos lançados. Killers, Glasvegas, Vampire Weekend e Snow Patrol por exemplo, ficaram fora da minha lista. Não ouvi e nem vou ouvir nada deles por enquanto. Mesmo assim, tive uma certa dificuldade na disposição dos lugares na minha listinha, humildemente. Talvez álbuns tenham sido lançados mais pro fim do ano tenham sido injustamente colocados; talvez eu não tenha dado a atenção e tempo necessários ou até mesmo aquela “ruminada bolada” que certos discos precisam para se tornarem efetivamente grandiosos. Quem gosta tanto de música quanto eu, entende exatamente sobre o quê o tou falando.

O meu primeiro lugar vai para, Bob Mould e seu District Line. District Line é um disco que passeia pelo pop e underground com facilidade. Com guitarras distorcidas e elementos eletrônicos, DL  trás uma sensação de tristeza encubada na alegria, aquela alegria disfarçada. O disco em si fala de pessoas, tempo, espaço que as divide. Silêncio, regras, solidão e lembranças são temas abordados por um dos maiores artistas que underground já teve. Ex-frontman do pioneiro Hüsker Dü e viado assumido, Bob Mould acertou em cheio, assim como  fez com o sensacional Copper Blue do Sugar, já que foi eleito o  melhor disco de 96 segundo a MNE – merecidamente.

O segundo lugar vai para um amor meu meio recente: Tiger Lou. Rasmus Kellerman, líder e mente pensante do Tiger Lou, lançou o que eu chamaria de sensacional, ele o chamou de A Partial Print. Esperei esse disco por todo o ano. Acompanhei as gravações pelo blog que Kellerman fez e confesso que fiquei com medo de não conseguir baixar. A cada faixa gravada, a cada remix feito – ou não – , eu estava “presente”. Graças ao amigo Angelo, consegui uma cópia antes do lançamento roubada diretamente da Startracks, sem tags nem nada… Que deliça! Como ele conseguiu? Sabe Deus. Esse disco, como todos do Tiger Lou, tem elementos do mais puro ar depressivo que só bandas góticas dos anos 80 tinham. Batidas eletrônicas, misturadas a instrumentos acústicos e algumas vezes sinfônicos, A Partial Print é um disco para se chorar dançando. So Demure e Trust Falls são minhas favoritas. Já consegui viciar mais de 10 pessoas em Tiger Lou esse ano. Por que será?

O Rook, do Shearwater apareceu numa hora aleatória para mim. Não conhecia a banda, e ouvindo uma rádio de similares ao “Palace Music” (também nas versões Palace Brothers, Palace Songs ou apenas Palace, procurem), ouvi “A Hush” do disco Winged Life e foi amor à primeira vista. Procurando saber mais da banda, descobri que além de integrantes do Okkervil River a banda tinha material novo disponível. Aí que o Rook entrou. Baixei e viciei de cara com a faixa 3, Leviathan, Bound. Na seqüência assisti a um show inteiro no Baeble Music consolidando meu casamento com o Shearwater. Como eu já disse em outros posts, o disco é adulto, coeso, virtuoso e rico. Me deu uma certa revolta não vê-lo no topo de listas como Rough Trade ou Mojo. Mas tá na minha e fodam-se esses gringos malucos.

O quarto lugar vai para uma banda que apareceu de surpresa. Able Baker Fox. Formada pelo casamento perfeito de integrantes do Small Brown Bike e Casket Lottery. Não levei muita fé a princípio. Voices é o disco de estréia deles e já veio arregaçando. Você conhece a macheza revoltada do Small Brown Bike? Então, é nesse naipe.  Se você se sentiu órfão do SBB após o The River Bed, não se sinta mais. O Able veio preencher o espaço vazio que o La Salle não chegou nem perto de preencher.

Robert Pollard Is Off To Business é meu quinto lugar do ano. Todo mundo que me conhece bem, sabe que eu sou péla-saca assumida desse bêbado desgraçado.Tava meio por fora do que  tava rolando em Ohio e peguei esse disco meio que no susto. Lendo sobre alguma coisa do Bob na Pitchfork, não lembro agora, acho que era alguma coisa relacionada a um disco ou projeto novo dele chamado “Brown Submarine” e, nesse artigo citavam o Robert Pollard Is Off To Business. Corri para baixar e não foi fácil não, viu? O soulseek tá cada dia mais capenga, o que é uma pena. Mas enfim, voltando ao disco, o Bob tem perdido – ou deixado – sua característica lo fi meio de lado. Já foi mais parecido com Guided By Voices, hoje, Pollard tem suas carecterísticas próprias. Ahn, é bom pra ele, bom pra mim e pra você também. Divirta-se e nem veja a hora passar com Robert Pollard Is Off To Business. Minha faixa favorita é Gratification To Concrete, que também é nome de uma das colagens mais elegantes do Bob na minha opinião.

West Texas é o meu sexto lugar esse ano. Sempre gostei do Jim Ward e sou da corrente que o segue depois do fim do At The Drive In. Jim me soa como um cara bacana e sincero. Depois do Sparta (que eu nem sei se acabou, tou por fora) ele apareceu com o Sleepercar, que pelo que me consta, à princípio, seria um projeto solo dele, não sei como tá agora. Sei que foi até o pai dele quem gravou o baixo do todo o disco. A parada tem um quê de texano mesmo, sem muita firula. Minhas favoritas desse disco: Kings & Compromises e a bela A Broken Promise, que foi escrita no backstage após a passagem de som no último show do At The Drive In, no Japão.

Ahh, Chris Walla! Pensou que não iria entrar na minha lista de favoritos, né? Bom, primeiramente esse cara talvez necessite de apresentações: Ele apesar de ser a cabeça pensante do Death Cab For Cutie, se mantém discreto quanto a sua posição na banda. Debut solo, Field Manual acabei conseguindo antes do lançamento ano passado, e minha mão coçou para entrar na minha lista de singers/songwriters de 2007. É, coisas melhores foram surgindo e meu manual de campo perdeu algumas posições. Mas a voz doce do Chris não me fez esquecer dele agora. Everyone Needs A Home e St. Modesto me fazem fechar os olhos em qualquer situação. Tente!

For Emma, Forever Ago do Bon Iver leva meu oitavo lugar esse ano, injustamente, talvez. Discaço mesmo. For Emma, Forever Ago foi gravado numa cabana em Winsconsin, com poucos recursos, microfone e instrumentos acústicos, num clima de solidão total.Saiu em 2007, numa edição limitada criada pelo proprio Bon Iver, mas o selo Jaguar resolveu lançar esse ano dando uma nova capa.

For Emma, Forever Ago

Real Emotional Trash do Stephen Malkmus ficou com o nono lugar. Titio Pavement não deixou a desejar dessa vez.  E já que quem é rei nunca perde a majestade, então tá ele aí. Comparações pavementianas a parte, o disco é genial, descompromissado e psicodélico setentista. As preferidas desse disco é a feliz e pop “Gardenia” – e seus menos de 3 minutos – e “Cold Son” (I am, rs) que termina com fanfarronices mil de Malkmus (e por que não do The Jicks?) que me fazem pensar “Que maldito, né cara?”

Death Cab For Cutie ganhou o décimo lugar, talvez injustamente também. Narrow Stairs foi muito esperado por mim e acompanhei os movimentos antes do lançamento. O primeiro single do disco “I will Possess Your Heart”, tavez seja uma das músicas que eu mais ouvi no ano. Não pela música em si – que a princípio me pareceu até meio fraca em termos de letra – mas, pela jam de quase 6 minutos antes da música efetivamente começar. Quando eu disse que “a princípio a letra me soou meio fraca” foi porque eu não tinha entendido. Após uma entrevista, Ben explicou que a música fala de um stalker e um mundo novo abriu-se para mim. Até o clipe que eu tinha achado meio idiota, fez todo sentido. E por falar em clipe, assistam ao vídeo de “Cath..” e chorem de tão lindo.

mmmm, tiger lou. i just came home from their concert, they played at kb. first time seeing them after … nearly three years, i think. and i am blown away. i hadn’t even expected it, since i wasn’t so fond of the new album after the first couple of times hearing it. the video above is the first i ever saw of them. on FastForward with charlotte roche, back then when they still had shows like hers on german music television. but that’s another story. tiger lou. i never think of them as much as a favorite band of mine, but they kind of are … if i do think of it. even though they’ve changed style quite a bit over the years. but that’s the way of life, right?

anyway, they played the entire new album from first to last song and a couple of oldies as encore. as said, i really liked it, but the malmö crowd was bring as usual. i could hear myself singing along at times, that’s how quiet it was around me. i don’t know if it a thing with malmö or swedes in general, but you guys really need to become more outgoing. not just standing there, ten meters from the stage, nodding your head and applauding every once in a while. but then again, it wasn’t like the guys were too communicative with the audience tonight either. enjoying themselves, but more with each other than us. hehe.

what can i say? another good concert in the ever-growing hall of fame of good concerts in malmö in the fall of 2008. for those of you who don’t know, the others were xiu xiu (i guess, i am alone on that one … right rebecca? isa?), okkervil river (no more to say than wow), veto (even though the audience was 14 on average) and finn. and olafur arnalds. combined. with some other icelandic girl, edda something. incredible. all of them. each in their own way, but i’m glad i saw them all. now the question is only, what is next? there are choices, i suppose. ladytron is high up on my list, but pretty pricy. maybe i’ll just not christmas shop for certain people and go see them instead? but no, i can’t be that mean. especially since noone got presents from me last year.

mmm, christmas is coming closer, too. we have our first christmas party, including dinner and exchanging gifts (wait for mine, people, it is the bomb). that will be odd. quite honestly, i am not in the gift-exchanging mindset just yet. give me another two weeks. i am just digesting the first christmas cookies. i am looking forward to the whole christmas thing in general though. people actually tend to get jollier in december. and there’s hardly anything better than jolly people. i think. i won’t be all that jolly though when i have to go home by train over christmas break. but taking the car is just too costly and … useless. well, i just have to take enough pepparkakor on the train to last the journey down to germany and i’ll be good.

that’s it for now. victor hugo is waiting for me (since, as a good european one should know his works by heart) and sleeping is not the worst option either.
