Portland ist das neue Seattle, heißt es neuerdings, seit Rockbands wie Modest Mouse, The Thermals, Gossip und Death Cab For Cutie von dort aus operieren und kleinere Bands aus der Stadt wie M.Ward und Blitzen Trapper ein größeres Publikum finden. Dass auch elektronische Musik von dort kommt, fiel bis dato weitgehend unter den Tisch. Um dies zu ändern, musste erst ein New Yorker zu Besuch kommen.

James Murphy, fame as LCD Soundsystem, nahm den Portlander Jona Bechtold und sein Projekt Yacht unter Vertrag und dessen fünftes Album “See mystery lights” erscheint nun auf Murphys Label DFA Records. Damit ist der Erfolg fast schon garantiert, denn nicht nur LCD Soundsystem sondern auch Bands wie Hot Chip, Hercules & Love Affair und The Rapture veröffentlichen dort. DFA-Veröffentlichungen haben einen corporate Sound, der mit dem Begriff-Dance-Punk nicht hinreichend beschrieben ist, aber in die richtige Richtung führt.

Bechtold näherte sich für den Nachfolger zu “I believe in you, your magic is real” nicht nur stark diesem Sound an, sondern erweiterte das Projekt um die Sängerin Claire L. Evans, wie es auch der DFA-Kollege The Juan MacLean mit Nancy Whang für sein im Frühjahr erschienenen und sehr zu empfehlendes Album “The future will come” tat. Yacht unterstützt ihn mit dem am 28. September erscheinenden Album darin, zu zeigen, dass auch 2009 abseits der ganz großen Namen tolle Musik von DFA kommt.

Auf der anderen Seite des Atlantiks, in Paris, gibt es mit Tigersushi ein Label, das einen genauso guten Ruf hat wie DFA, aber von Krautrock bis Minimal eine größere Bandbreite im Katalog bietet. Labelgründer Joakim erweiterte die Stilpalette auf seinem heute erscheinenden vierten Album “Milky ways” noch um Drone-Doom und nennt stilprägende Bands wie Earth und Sunn O))) als wichtige Einflüsse. In Verbindung mit House und Krautrock à la Can erschließen sich die Songs, die Joakim mit seiner Band The Disco eingespielt hat, oft nicht beim ersten Hören, manchmal auch nicht beim letzten, aber wer sich beim Buddeln nicht die Hände schmutzig machen will, kann auch nicht Perlen wie “Spiders” und “Ad me” frei legen.

Recession or no recession, I carry on purchasing my weekly dosis of aural pleasure. And here it is condensed in 70 min of pure dancefloor bliss. Last year was re-edit time. This one, it can be said by now that deep house is back with a disco touch all over. Sluggish, slower and more sophisticated than in the late 90s. It is all about recycling!

The death of Michael Jackson has caught everybody off guard. It is very sad to see a music genius of his stature go away all of a sudden. Anyhow, we have been left with a legacy of masterpieces behind by the stellar and controversial ‘king of pop’. time to re-edit his entire back-catalogue?

This mix is dedicated to Michael… via the revenge.

In may of this year Tigersushi released what has proven to be maybe the most engaging album this year thus fare. Krikor is probably best known for his minimal disco stompers, but on Land of the Truth he exercises a different muscle, and to great success, even though the minimalist techno also has its grip held firmly around the structure of the album. Good as gold!

DJ Joakim brand created in 2001 Tigersushi Records and ever since then  it has become a force in French underground electro and pop music. Tigersushi has launched their first collection, consisting of some knitwear and some t-shirts, including a collaboration with French graffiti artist Fafi.

Vous prévoyez une attaque à main armée d’un grand magasin de jouets  mais souhaitez rester élégant en toutes circonstances? Tigersushi a la solution… avec une cagoule à l’effigie de leur célèbre petit tigre! Le site dédié à la ligne créée par le label n’est pas encore en ligne mais, en attendant, les produits sont disponibles sur le Tigersushi Furs Temporary Shop ou à la boutique au 27, rue Saint Onge Paris 3e. On y trouve notamment des t-shirts réalisés par Mathieu Mercier, Pierre La Police et Charles Berberian, mais aussi des t-shirts des groupes maison comme Poni Hoax ou Principles of Geometry. Ca n’a pas l’air d’être mentionné sur le site mais pour l’achat de trois t-shirts la cagoule est offerte !

T-Shirts Tigersushi

Poni Hoax makes like authentic Italo sounds that goes back to the 80s. Their kinda inconsistent when I first heard them, but lately, they’ve been nothing short of awesome. That’s what happen after getting signed onto Tigersushi. Now for this one, is just massive! Alter Ego are made up of old timers techno Gods, Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke. They have not been very consistent either after 2004’s dance anthem of the year, the very rocking “Rocker.” But with this latest epic remix of Hypercommunication, both Hoax and Ego set things right.

Went to see Poni Hoax at the Recyclart (Brussels) yesterday and I must say they were really bloody amazing.
I already liked their new ‘Images Of Sigrid’ album (released by Tigersushi/Bang!/…), but they really excel at playing live. They had the whole place dancing, stagediving and just generally jumping around. And that for a band that play a sort of Italo Disco meets Joy Division meets LCD Soundsystem meets oh well whatever…
This was one of those gig that you remember for a long time after. Do go and see them if you get the chance!

I posted the video for the first single from ‘Images of Sigrid’ called ‘Antibodies’ and a live version of ‘Pretty Tall Girls’.
Do keep an eye on their excellent drummer and it’s also good to see that there’s still a future in rock ‘n roll when you’re balding (see singer extraordinaire Nicolas Ker).

Wie geht eine Urzeit-Szenerie mit den Prinzipien der Geometrie zusammen? Welche Rolle spielen dabei die mysteriösen Boards Of Canada und der famose Joakim? Wo steht das “Murder Motel” und was ist ein Poni Hoax? Versuch einer Aufklärung. Weiter auf Tonspion

Il y a quelques jours, reçu ce nouvel album du groupe parisien (de Barbès, précise leur myspace) Poni Hoax. J’écoute le premier morceau, Paper Bride, en boucle : la voix du chanteur, Nicolas Ker, m’évoque en filigrane celle de Billy McKenzie, chanteur du groupe eighties The Associates, mais comme passée par trop de clopes sans filtre. Il y a quelque chose d’irrésolument new wave, de vaguement allemand aussi, qui me donne l’impression d’être à Berlin, un peu après Bowie et Eno, juste avant Nick Cave. Mais peut-être aussi ailleurs, peut-être simplement à Paris, en Europe, en 2008, là où tout se mélange, là où l’on se permet de conclure des disques de pop par des morceaux de 13 minutes, planants et meurtris. Et ce qui est beau, aussi, c’est que la Sigrid du titre du disque existe vraiment. On en reparle, sûrement.

Poni Hoax, ou tout simplement le meilleur groupe de rock français à l’heure actuelle. De rock ? Pas si sûr : leur musique zigzague entre rock, disco, electro, new wave et j’en passe. Avec des titres cultes sur leur premier album éponyme comme Budapest (featuring Olga Kouklaki) ou Involutive Star, ils ont déchainés la presse musicale qui les a encensé. Ils reviennent avec Images of Sigrid, leur deuxième album, dont est extrait le titre Antibodies, sorti sur Tigersushi (le label de Joakim). Emmenés par le sémillant Nicolas Ker (photo) et Laurent Bardainne, ces parisiens n’ont pas fini d’incarner les chantres du (vrai) renouveau musical français, pour qui la musique n’évoque pas que le prime time de TF1 et les sournoiseries de Pascal Nègre.

La somme des carrés des deux cotés est égale au carré de l’hypoténuse. Ce qui est sûr, c’est que Principles of Geometry ne rentre pas aussi facilement dans une équation que cela. Pas facile d’insérer des nappes dignes de Boards of Canada, une rythmique à la New order, une voix vocodée et un coté prog-rock dans un système d’influence précis. Surtout qu’entrent sur la piste (verte) des breaks quelques peu compressés qui viennent compléter la formule, fort bien produite de surcroît. A mountain for president, avec en featuring Sébastien Tellier, s’impose donc comme un revival de ces années New order et consorts avec un apport de fraîcheur toute particulière, puisqu’elle nous vient des cimes.Une folle ascension au milieu des sapins et d’un décor enneigé, emmenée par l’aura de Carpenter qui surplombe la musique du duo. Pour un treck plus long, optons pour l’excellent remix de Joakim (Tigersushi) qui, non content d’avoir signé ce magnifique album, semble visiblement ravi de ce come back des 80’s déguisés, puisqu’il s’en donne à coeur joie avec un authentique remix, qui va bien plus loin dans les alpages. Une vraie épopée vers les sommets.
