Cher Saint-Nicolas,

A simple, casual and natural table set for your café, pub or bar – or even for your home/garden. I made this set a couple of months ago when I felt the need of a simple café/pub at Esperanza Beach, where customers could sit and rest or chat with their friends. Most visitors loved the barrel seats and table and many of them asked me if I could sell it as a set. I didn’t think about selling these lovely pieces when I first made them; it was for use at the Beach. But later I decided to combine it with our popular Beer Dispenser and made a ready-to-use set especially for tiki hangouts, cafés or pubs.

Each barrel is one-prim and the table is two-prims – all sculpted items with high quality textures and special sitting animations with female and male avatars. The set comes with the beer dispenser: A scripted object in look of a beer tray with glasses – gives 5 different beer brands in a menu-driven system on-click.

All the pieces in the set are copy enabled which means you can rez as many copies as you like – ideal for outdoor pubs, tiki bars or beach hangouts. You can see, try and buy the set at Esperanza Beach.

On the north side of Shimokitazawa, there is a Hawaiian restaurant with palm trees that are unusual

On the north side of Shimokitazawa, there is a Hawaiian restaurant with palm trees that are unusual for Tokyo. The tall palm tree with a silver trunk is a Queen Palm, syagrus romanzoffiana, native to woodland Brazil and Argentina and very common in San Francisco and other cold climates. It looks somewhat like a coconut palm.

The restaurant is clearly using these gorgeous palms– along with tiki torches and up-lights lit even during the day, a water fountain, and a wood porch extending to the street– as signifiers of exotic and distant islands. The effect is rather surprising and a pleasant contrast from the neighborhood’s narrow and crowded streets with few real street trees.

The trees look very healthy. I wonder if the restaurant provides special protection in the winter. The small palm tree is also very appealing. It is a Pindo Palm, or butia capitata, native to Brazil and Uruguay. Since it is hardy to 9C (15F), it seems well suited to Tokyo.

Shag Baby!!!

Ok stay with me here…not that kind of shag.

You have to love Shag art. It’s simplicity, adult messages, human behavior interpretations, pure fun with the sexy, cool, wacky, representations that hits the canvas. Bright colors that shine with hip in your face emotion capture a moment that we either can relate to or wish we could relate to…their just shagadelic.

Bottoms Up
The art of Josh Agle express’ the art of consumption…the art of the seemingly sophisticated consumers exploiting life’s vices to the extreme with flare and sensual exuberance.

Yuppies gone wild in a beatnik kind of way. Retro. Hip. Polynesian. Hula. Vespa. Drinks. Party. Tiki. and always Mod…always with a flare of the 60’s…this is Shag. He makes Elvis and the Rat Pack hipper then they already are! Impossible you scream…but true.

Jo sh-ag le
For those of you that may not already know why Josh Agle is called Shag…his name comes from a play of his very own…Jo “shag” le

It’s his love of simplicity and color that grab you…his wit and joy of sharing humor…and his limitless approaches to tearing down cultures walls and letting us all peak into another life. Essentially giving us a material lifestyle that some want and some envy and at the same time poking fun at the wackiness of it all.

Ripe Vice
Sex, alcohol and mass consumption are common themes. Some pushing the movie ratings above PG13…but all in good taste. Adult friendly…adult themed…as one of his titled books so eloquently explains ‘Shag A to Z: A Children’s Book Unsuitable for Children’. Enough said.

Those Wacky Shriners
But let’s make sure we give kudos to our friend…he certainly knows how to support charity and children alike. Shag has teamed up with Shrine El Bekal a Southern California Shrine Temple to create a set of prints depicting a Shriner Parade to benefit the Shriner Hospitals for Children.

Throw in benefit prints like the Ennis House foundation and you can see how this artist gives back.

I found some great photos of Shag’s studio on www.guillontine.com that are worth a look.

Warhol Would Be Proud
If you think about the rise of Shag you certainly must be impressed. In a mere 12 years since his first gallery. Think about that…not bad. Perhaps he has just struck a chord with designers and art lovers alike. I think he is Warhol like…where he has jumped into the pop culutre of art. Like Andy’s recognition of icons…Shag has become a brand of his own. Not the easiest thing to do in this world.

Play Hard
With success comes a strong work ethic…Shag paints seven days a week. In an interview on modculture.com he said “I have a little notepad where I write ideas down. I seldom sketch ideas until I sit down to do a painting. Though family, friends, acquaintances and fans often suggest ideas to me, these ideas tend to be a little askew from my own perspective & I seldom end up painting things that others have suggested.”

So ride the tide Josh…get out your tiki paraphernalia and celebrate. You deserve it and we deserve your splendor. Keep up the incredible work…it brings great joy to many.

Here are a just a few of my favorites…let me know yours.

Rum drinks and warm weather go together. Time to buy some tiki mugs.

As an interim measure, I picked up a young drinking coconut at the supermarket and decided to revel in the kitschness of it all.

Lime in the Coconut

15ml fresh lime juice, 30ml coconut juice, 15ml fresh pineapple juice, 30ml spiced rum, 30ml Mount Gay Extra Old rum, 10ml Amaretto. Shake all ingredients well and strain into a well iced coconut. Garnish in a garish fashion, I’ve gone with pineapple leaves, a wheel of lime, 1987 fluro straws and ice cube Moai heads.

Halloween Town in Burbank lives up to its “Nightmare Before Christmas”-esque name—it truly is Halloween here all year round. The store used to be in North Hollywood, but a few years ago they moved to this bigger location and really decked it out. This is what part of the inside looks like!

It’s such fun to browse through the rooms while hearing the “Munsters” theme and The Ghastly Ones on the sound system. Unfortunately, I didn’t take very many photos (and the ones I did get were fuzzy) as I found out they they have a no pictures policy.

My favorite items are the vintage-esque goodies like candy jars and cameo necklaces, but they also have tons of costumes, accessories, decorations and a great book section that even has some Shag stuff. So, you might be wondering, “What does all this have to do with tiki?” OK, I’ll get to that…

I found this Rock Steady “Cursed on Voodoo Island” thermal shirt with tikis on it in the sale section for about $20. From what I can tell, it doesn’t seem to have any relation to the Boris Karloff movie “Voodoo Island.”

If you’re in the neighborhood, I’d also suggest a stop at 8-Ball, which is just down the street. But beware of hitchhiking ghosts!

At first, I was in Jamaica on a tour of this ancient castle that housed a bunch of tikis. There was a stone staircase with no railings that wound around the middle of the castle. Halfway down the stairs, the guide said we had to throw food at the tiki god so that the castle wouldn’t fall. We all got out little brown pellets that looked like fish food and threw it to the top of the tiki. The smile was excessively wide and toothy. As we neared the bottom of the stairs, the guide fell to her knees in front of the tiki we just threw food in front of. The thing came to life and thanked us for the food and told us to bring steak next time cooked medium well instead of fish food. The dream jumped to a scene that looked like a majour battle in some sort of summer camp between the red team and the blue team. There were giant water balloons being thrown everywhere and people were being captured. There were hundreds of kids and counselors on either side. All of a sudden, there was a majour cease fire on both sides and two counselors met up in the middle and came toward me. They said the only way to settle this was to have a meeting of the leaders from both groups and come to a compromise. They chose me to represent the blue side and they chose another girl to represent the red side. I went to the place of meeting but couldn’t find the room. The hallway was filled with angry people and in each of the rooms I passed, the walls were black and there were lectures going on [sort of looked like a grim NoVA]. I got to the end of the hall and the dream was over.

by Pink Lady

Our big fall fundraiser, the LUPEC Boston Tiki Bash, is just a few weeks away, and LUPEC’s thinking Tiki! Last week we discussed the Mai Tai, that simple and delicious blend of dark rum, orgeat, lime, and curacao that was a cornerstone of the Tiki craze. Did Donn Beach invent this drink, or Trader Vic? Who knows. This week, we turn our attention to a considerably more complex concoction, the Zombie. We’re certain Donn Beach invented this one – and took the original recipe with him to the grave.

As the story goes, Donn Beach (née Ernest Beaumont-Gantt) invented the Zombie in the 1930s for an aviophobic friend taking a tipple at Don the Beachcomber’s before a flight to San Francisco…or was it a friend trying to overcome a hangover before an important business meeting? In any case, the guest had three of these high-test concoctions before (presumably) stumbling off for his flight/meeting/what have you. He returned a few days later to report: the drinks made him feel like the living dead for days thereafter. And the Zombie was born.

The Zombie became a signature cocktail at the Hurricane Bar at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York City and enjoyed great popularity there. The drink went on to become a staple of Tiki joints that sprang up across the US, such as Trader Vic’s and, of course, Don the Beachcomber’s, where a 2-drink maximum policy was instituted.

Donn Beach was notoriously secretive about his cocktail recipes, creating special mixes for his bartenders that boasted numbers rather than names, keeping even the staff in the dark about his signature drinks. Imitations emerged in other Tiki joints, and Donn himself very likely noodled with the original recipe over time to accommodate new products or lack of available ingredients in certain markets. Countless recipes now exist, making it virtually impossible to pin down an original with which to craft a true artifact version for home consumption.

Tiki expert Jeff “Beachbum” Berry appears to have come the closest in excavating an original recipe through interviews with former staff from Don the Beachcomber’s. Poring over personal notes kept by these waiters and bartenders from their days behind the stick, several are published in his book, Sippin’ Safari. A variation via Dale DeGroff is below.

THE ZOMBIE
Adapted from The Essential Cocktail by Dale DeGroff

1.5 oz medium-bodied Jamaican rum
.5 oz 151-proof Demerara rum
.25 oz Velvet Falernum
.5 oz Donn’s Mix #1
1.5 oz fresh squeezed orange juice
.75 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1 teaspoon grenadine
2 dashes Angostura bitters
