Any of you who have been around here for a while know that I spent several years writing romantic suspense. When I came back to writing seriously after grad school, it was a romantic suspense that I’d been toying with for years that I set about finishing. Shortly after that is when I started developing that notion for branding myself with Murder and Magnolias–Mississippi based romantic suspense. Nobody else does it, so it seemed like a brilliant little niche I could create for myself. And I still feel that way. I spent 2 or 3 years working on that project, creating spin offs, developing my fictional Mississippi towns and their inhabitents. I was working solidly on a Mississippi based ghost story/romantic suspense when this time last year I was beaten over the head with the idea for Hunted in Shadow. Because I’d been struggling with Til Death not having a really solid plot (solid characters, solid setting, solid voice, but missing something in the plot department) for a while, and because I was really kind of tired of RS and needed a change of pace, I decided to run with HiS. And that’s what I’ve been working on all this year. And of course I’ve envisioned a series here, and created a world that I could, in theory, build a career off of. I redesigned my blog (again), started working on branding/platform, have been working on a novella I plan to give away as a freebie to build readership.

And then as I was strolling through the crowded aisles of Kroger on Friday night, protecting my 13+ pound turkey from the masses and quietly celebrating the fact that I really did find panko breadcrumbs (clearly it doesn’t take a lot to make me happy), Wyatt (hero from Til Death) decided to pop up and say hello. So I came home and reread the last draft of what I had left off with–91 pages of pretty damn awesome if I do say so myself. I really loved that story. I love those characters. And I love my voice with that book. It’s romantic suspense but with a light, comic touch that I am apparently pretty good at.

That light comic thing really frustrated me during those 2 or 3 years I was working on RS because except for Til Death, I was usually trying to write about these really emotionally damaged characters. I pull it off with my villains, but I kinda suck at doing it with my hero or heroine. Obviously, it’s something that would probably get better with practice, but since I am good at the slightly light, comic side, it seems like I should go with it.

Anyway, since 2009 has been all about plotting and story structure, and I’ve learned so much, I want to go back and revisit Til Death and see if I can’t nail down the major plot points based on story structure. It seems like since I now have a much more solid idea of what was lacking in a lot of my prior plots, that I can go back to projects that I abandoned in the midst of the Dreaded Valley of the Shadow of the Middle, and rescue them. There are a lot of stories I love that need rescuing.

So…I’m not sure what that means in terms of what I’ll be working on this next year. I haven’t written a single word in the last week, so I will definitely be up for punishment tomorrow at Mission:Accountability. I still have to finish that last lecture (lots to cover on the moderate behaviorists), which I HOPE to do Monday and Tuesday. I think my brain has just needed a break. And then we’ll see. I’m still hoping to knock out the novella first draft by New Year’s. I’m right at halfway, so we’ll see. Then, the plan is to start on draft 2 of HiS, but if I get a solid plot outlined for Til Death then…well, we’ll see.

The fact that I’m revisiting the romantic suspense side of things brings up something that I’ve been pondering about. I write in two very different genres. I mean, there’s romance and suspense in both, but one side is very specifically other world paranormal romance and the other is straight up, more traditional romantic suspense. I know that it’s possible that if I wind up published in both, it’s possible my publisher may recommend that I publish one under one pen name and one under the other as a matter of branding. But of course I’m not published yet, so I don’t want to expend a lot of energy trying to brand two DIFFERENT pen names until I know which one I’ll actually get published with–the paranormal romance or the Mississippi based romantic suspense. Since I do plan to pursue both, I’ve been trying to figure out how to reflect that on my blog.

I was thinking maybe a theme that’s sort of a split personality. Something that shows in the header with Kait Nolan in the middle, the Murder and Magnolias sort of pictoral theme on one side, and the Mirus world stuff with wolves and fangs and whatever spooky stuff on the other. I’ll have to consult my fantastic web designer once she’s done giving birth (any day now!). She did such an amazing job with Pots and Plots that I’d really like to have her do something here. So anybody have thoughts or suggestions on that front? I mean, I could do something generic, but that doesn’t sound like nearly as much fun.

Dealing with Funny Business

Four years ago, television insiders were rocked by a fear that the half-hour comedy genre was on its final legs. The field that was once defined by “I Love Lucy,” “Three’s Company” and “Cheers” could not hold an audience. Take, for example, the case of NBC’s powerhouse block of “Must See TV” Thursday. This block defined sitcoms for the latter half of the ‘90s, thanks to hits such as “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Frasier” and “Will and Grace.” Once “Friends” and “Seinfeld” ended in 2004 and “Will and Grace” signed off in 2006, however, multi-camera comedies – those taped in front of a studio audience – were suddenly endangered. CBS had launched the moderately successful “Two and a Half Men” in 2003; for the next six years, this would be one of only two multi-camera comedies to make it past three seasons.

With the demise of the multi-camera comedy, luckily, came the rise of the single-camera bracket. Single-camera comedies usually don’t use laugh tracks. The humor is portrayed more subtly and the cameramen have a longer creative rope to zoom in and out and experiment with angles. Popular examples of multi-camera comedies are “The Office,” “Arrested Development” and “Malcolm in the Middle.” While critics love this genre, the broader audience historically does not, hence the cancellation of “Arrested Development” despite its strong cult following. It used to be that networks needed more patience with multi-camera comedies. Whereas single-camera sitcoms either found audiences quickly or not at all, multi-cameras’ greatest strength was word of mouth, and this required time. This fall season, however, is changing all the rules.

2008 entry “The Big Bang Theory” regenerated America’s love of comedy, and this season ABC has miraculously managed to launch a successful two-hour comedy block. While The CW eliminated comedy from its primetime schedule altogether, it’s undoubtedly a strong field for the other networks. So, which honeys bring the funny and which has-beens are wearing thin?

“She doesn’t even know I exist.”

If you’ve never heard of a TV show, it’s understandable. But if Doc Sonya has barely heard about it, you know it’s bad.

Brothers
It’s a new comedy on Fox. Comes on during what TV insiders so fondly refer to as “the Friday night death slot.” The network obviously doesn’t want it to succeed, so why should you?

‘Til Death
This show is still on? Really??

Time to Break Up With…

Two and a Half Men
Why do I feel so revolted by “Two and a Half Men”? It’s not the fact that it’s a “dude” comedy that objectifies women; I actually couldn’t care less about that. My dislike probably stems from “Men’s” lack of comedic class – neither the crude jokes nor the scenes in bed nor the dialogue is refined. There’s a little something called taste, and “Men” leaves one in your mouth comparable to vinegar.Bottom Line: It’s sad that this is still one of the highest rated comedies in primetime.

Accidentally on Purpose
On par with “Two and a Half Men,” this tired concept should never have made it to the air in the first place. “Dharma & Greg”’s Jenna Elfman is wasted here as the “cougar” who gets knocked up by a twenty-something dude. Unfunny dialogue and stereotypical guy humor ensue (if the writers want to discover the proper execution of guy humor, they should watch “The Hangover”).Bottom Line: Bor-ing. Turn off the TV after “How I Met Your Mother” airs.

One-Night Stands:

Ultimately forgettable, but momentarily entertaining.

Ugly Betty
I loved “Ugly Betty” when it premiered as a bright, quirky comedy in 2006. Much like “Heroes,” however, “Betty” fell into a sophomore slump and has since reached only mediocrity. The show now lacks the charm and whimsy that made it so delightful during its first season.Bottom Line: While Daniel has no memorable storyline to speak of and Betty’s romantic entanglements are dull and repetitive, Wilhelmina, Marc and Amanda continue to bring the inspired comedy the show sought its first season. Dump the other characters and give these three their own show.

Gary Unmarrried
Another uninspired comedy on CBS’ schedule. While “Gary” is certainly more refined than “Men” and “Accidentally on Purpose,” it’s hardly a superior selection. It easily identifies with other marginally successful dad-centered comedies of past years: “The War at Home,” “According to Jim” and “Yes, Dear” come to mind.Bottom Line: Americans have proven that there is indeed an audience for these sub-par shows, and they thus continue to survive. Why not try something saucier, though?

Casual Dating:

“You’re pretty funny. Plus, you paid for dinner. I guess we can go out again.”

The Middle
“The Middle” centers on the Hecks, a middle-class family in Indiana. While Patricia Heaton is the star, funnyman Neil Flynn, who previously played the Janitor on “Scrubs,” is my reason for watching. I’d say “The Middle” could be appointment TV, but with so many satisfying comedies out there, a girl can only watch so much.Bottom Line: Reminiscent of “Malcolm in the Middle,” “The Middle” demonstrates how mixing kooky with funny plus a tinge of heartfelt emotion makes for an entertaining half-hour.

Cougar Town
I’m sure you’ve heard of this Courtney Cox show. Question is, is it any good? Answer: Eh… “Cougar Town” tries for the laughs a smidge too hard, and the slapstick bits don’t quite fit in with today’s comedy demands. However, there’s no denying Cox’s charm, and as son Travis, Dan Byrd’s downplayed comedic timing reminds me of Michael Cera’s spot-on underacting on “Arrested Development.”Bottom Line: Not a bad show, but not a standout, either.

The New Adventures of Old Christine
Julia Louis-Dreyfus of “Seinfeld” fame plays Christine, a divorced mom who runs a gym. Her sidekick is the hilarious Wanda Sykes. I’m going to be honest with you: I’ve never seen this show. It’s shameful, because there’s no real excuse for it. But I’m going to endorse it because everyone who’s ever seen this show loves it. Plus, it comes with a top recommendation from my brother, and I’m OK with trusting Doc Sunny on this one.Bottom Line: Whether I’ve seen it or not, this show has Wanda Sykes. Come on, people, watch it. She’s quite possibly one of the funniest comedians ever.

Long Term Dating:

Comedy depends so much on personal preference, so it’s hard to figure out which shows to hate on and which to brag about. But the following are keepers. Girl Scout’s honor.

How I Met Your Mother
This year has been a breakout year for “Mother” scene-stealer Neil Patrick Harris. The guy starred in Joss Whedon’s online saga “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.” He finally hosted an episode of “Saturday Night Live,” as well as the Tony Awards and the Emmy Awards, and he garnered an Emmy nomination himself for his work on “mother.” Folks, Doogie Howser has grown up. But Harris, as legendary/awesome playboy Barney Stinson, is only one element that makes “How I Met Your Mother” so fantastic. The ensemble cast includes Alyson Hannigan (“Buffy”! “American Pie”!); Josh Radnor; Cobie Smulders; and Jason Segel, who you probably know as “that guy” from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “I Love You, Man,” and “Knocked Up.” Together, these five comedians bring us the multi-camera, next generation version of “Friends.” These friends live in NYC, hang out in MacLaren’s Bar (sorry, Central Perk), and make bold use of flashbacks to bring us one of the most subtly entertaining comedies we’ve seen in years.

Bottom Line: “It’s gonna be legen… wait for it… and I hope you’re not lactose intolerant, because the second half of that word is dairy!”-Barney, “How I Met Your Mother”

The Big Bang Theory
You’ve probably at some point (quietly) laughed at a nerd for something he or she said. “The Big Bang Theory” thankfully allows us to laugh at nerds loudly and proudly, thanks to a stock of sitcom characters who are nutty, naïve and endearingly neurotic. Good for a laugh are Raj Koothrappali, an Indian stereotype with a thick accent, bad dress sense and the inability to speak in front of women; Howard Wolowitz, a short Jewish man who dresses in bold colors and will do anything to be with a woman; and Leonard and Penny, the two characters we can most easily relate to.

Jim Parsons, however, steals the show as Sheldon Cooper, Leonard’s socially awkward physicist roommate who neurotically must eat at the same restaurant every night, depending on which day of the week it is, cannot discern sarcasm and always settles a dispute with a good round of Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock: “Scissors cuts paper, paper covers rock, rock crushes lizard, lizard poisons Spock, Spock smashes scissors, scissors decapitates lizard, lizard eats paper, paper disproves Spock, Spock vaporizes rock…

Bottom Line: …and as it always has, rock crushes scissors.”

Modern Family
ABC’s breakout comedy follows three families, related in some way or another, over the course of their daily activities. Sound dull? It could be, except “Modern Family” is the first show to successfully mix elements of multi-camera and single-camera comedies, so along with the blatantly hilarious lines, there’s a slew of dialogue so witty that one can’t help but laugh. My favorite part is Ty Burrell as Phil, whose over-the-top attempts at being the “cool” dad mock everything our generation is about. With possibly the most laugh-out-loud moments of any comedy on TV right now, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not watching.Bottom Line: “I’m a cool dad, that’s my thang. I’m hip, I surf the web, I text. LOL: laugh out loud, OMG: oh my god, WTF: why the face.” (cut to Phil doing the dance to “High School Musical’s” “We’re All in this Together.”)

Glee
I’m sure you’ve heard of “Glee” by now, what with its musical numbers ripping up the iTunes chart week after week. Combining America’s love for undiscovered talent with nutty plotlines and distinctive high school personalities, “Glee” is broadcast television’s scripted answer to reality TV. What I like best about “Glee” is that it’s not a show focused on singing. It’s a character-centered dramedy with musical numbers sprinkled in. While the story about Will’s wife Terri pretending to be pregnant is frustrating, Jane Lynch’s portrayal of maniacal cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester more than makes up for it.Bottom Line: “I’ll often yell at homeless people, ‘Hey, how’s that homelessness working out for you? Give not being homeless a try!’” -Sue, explaining that people should be motivated to better themselves.

Community / Parks & Recreation / The Office / 30 Rock
Like I said, NBC’s “Must See TV” Thursday was the place to be in the ‘90s, and its revamped “Comedy Night Done Right” is no different. Each of these multi-camera comedies not only defines but also glorifies the genre. There’s no need to expound on “The Office”; I’m sure every college student has seen it at least once (“that’s what she said!”).“30 Rock” isn’t as popular, but it really should be. Every character is a standout. My favorite is Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy, VP of East Coast Television for NBC (probably because I want his job one day). “30 Rock” never hesitates to mock NBC or television or politics or anything else for that matter. Not only is “30 Rock” bold, it is also smart, never insulting the audience or throwing jokes in our face. Much of the humor isn’t in the dialogue – it’s visual (just when Jack says “I need your guidance” and reaches for a picture of Jesus on his desk, he picks up the one behind Jesus… of Nixon.)

Parks & Recreation
When Amy Poehler vehicle “Parks & Rec” debuted last year, it was shaky at best: the scripts weren’t quite funny and the acting was too forced. This season, however, the show has found its legs. Sometime, when America quit watching, “Parks & Rec” got funny. Poehler’s grown into her role, and the standout cast of supporting players now receives the emphasis it deserves.

Community

“Community” is the 2009 entry into NBC’s Thursday night comedy line-up, and if its ratings hold (or grow!), it will round-out the comedy block perfectly for years to come. Like the other comedies, “Community”’s greatest strength is the ensemble cast, led by “The Soup”’s Joel McHale, as manipulative lawyer Jeff who’s back in community college because it was finally discovered that his degree came not from Columbia University, but Colombia, South America. This show is, I kid you not, hilarious. The best comedic pairing is undoubtedly Abed and Troy, and the executive producers have realized this: they now dedicate the final thirty seconds of each episode to an Abed-Troy gimmick, be it rapping in Spanish, taking over the school’s PA system or talking in a Batman growl.

Bottom Lines:
“How long have you known about the pregnancy? A week? A month? A year?” –Michael Scott, “The Office”

“I haven’t had this much trouble with a book since “Where’s Waldo” went to that barber pole factory.” -Tracy, “30 Rock”

“Whenever Leslie asks me for the Latin names of any of our plants, I just give her the names of rappers.” -Tom, “Parks & Recreation”

“Our first assignment is to make a documentary. They’re like movies, but with ugly people.” -Abed, “Community”

$240,462, seguido por ‘Two And A Half Men’ ($226,635), ‘Family Guy’ ($214,759) e ‘The Simpsons’ ($201,920).

A NBC ficou em segundo (!) exibindo ‘Law & Order’ (7.2 milhões e 1.5 ponto), ‘Dateline’ (7.9 milhões e 1.8 ponto) e ‘The Jay Leno Show’ (6.1 milhões e 1.4 ponto).

ULTIME NOTIZIE

Stagioni complete per “Mercy”, “Community” e “Parks and Recreation”

‘The Jay Leno Show’ fechou a noite com 5.3 milhões e 1.4 ponto.

Welcome to Part 3 of my Fall TV review. If you missed parts 1 & 2 just scroll down a bit and you

Welcome to Part 3 of my Fall TV review. If you missed parts 1 & 2 just scroll down a bit and you’re sure to find them. FYI, they were about ABC and CBS. Today the subject of my dissection is FOX.

The easiest way to start things is to say that FOX has its good moments and its very bad moments, and yes, I am talking about More to Love when I say bad. So, without further ado…

Sunday
The Simpsons……I remember being in third and fourth grade when The Simpsons were all but required television viewing. To think that the show is still on the air is, at the same time, disturbing and interesting. I watch it when I stumble onto it while flipping channels (and usually enjoy it even though I always seem to find the same five or six episodes) but I am no slave to it.

Monday
House……House is one of the four shows that I will find a way, no matter what, to watch every week. Though I must admit that the earlier episodes are better. I miss the team of Chase, Cameron, and Foreman. Thirteen and Taub are alright but I am strongly against the show taking on more of a Thirteen/Foreman based secondary (after House himself, of course) story. House needs to stay focused on House and the patients with a nice weekly dose of Wilson. Not to worry, I won’t stop watching anytime soon.

Tuesday
Hell’s Kitchen……I think there is something wrong with me. I just can’t get enough of Gordon Ramsay berating and belittling the chefs who think they are his equal. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that 80% of them are cocky, irritating little buggers. Or maybe it is because Ramsay’s meltdowns are ever more hysterical in their dramatics. It just never gets old.

Wednesday
So You Think You Can Dance……No, I don’t. And, like American Idol, I haven’t got the foggiest idea what is so special about this show. Then again, to be fair, I’ve never watched it. I just don’t watch FOX on Wednesday. Nothing to pull me in.

Thursday
Bones……Will they or won’t they? Do they or don’t they? Two very important questions for fans of Bones and Booth to consider. I don’t know if I want them to fall into bed. Probably not. I like the playfulness they have now. And the best thing about particular crime show is the humor. Where shows like Criminal Minds can make you seriously question the sanity of all mankind, Bones makes you realize that you can laugh and smile even after seeing a body with skin peel off after soaking in a barrel of wine.

Friday
‘Til Death……I watched this Brad Garrett show a few times. And that was enough for me. Apparently for most other people as well seeing that it has been moved from a prime Thursday(?) slot to Friday. Oh dear.

Saturday
Cops & America’s Most Wanted……I don’t like either of these shows. I never really have. But seeing how long they’ve been around, I’ve got to admire their apparently die-hard fans.

Ergo, Fox is good at the beginning of the week and gets slightly worse as the week goes on save, of course, for Bones.

Today is going to be an odd day here at Mainlining Pop Culture, because it appears that everybody who works at my paying job has decided to call in sick today. That is not an exaggeration, as I am currently sitting in my office completely alone hoping that the phone doesn’t ring again. Therefore, updates may be sporadic, at best.

With all that being said, I am happy to present to you Friday night’s lackluster ratings. You know the drill, if you want the complete story, check this out, but why would you want to miss my break down after the jump?

Hewitt helped CBS continue to dominate all comers

Because I enjoy sounding like a broken record, I will say that CBS has, once again, taken the night. Without taking the time to do the research(i.e. looking back at my ratings rundowns), I do believe that this means that CBS has won every meaningful night of TV in the new season. But, looking at the cloud in that silver lining, nobody really won Friday night. Lackluster is the watchword here.

Ghost Whisperer(7.6 million total viewers), Medium(7.7 million total viewers), and Numb3rs(7.7 million total viewers) were the three highest numbers posted Friday night. They also, not coincidentally, are all three found on CBS’s schedule. When compared with the numbers of NCIS, for example, from earlier in the week, you can see that the highest rated show on Friday was about 14 million viewers less than the highest rated show on Tuesday. Friday night really is a graveyard for TV shows.

Echo is running from the bad ratings you are giving her

However, even with the anemic ratings in general, Dollhouse is not performing well at all. For this, I blame each and every one of you for not telling enough people that this is one of the best shows on TV(even if I wasn’t crazy about this week’s episode). The show drew only 2 million total viewers, putting it behind both the Michael Strahan-led comedy, Brothers(2.4 million), and the horrific ‘Til Death(2.2 million), to be the lowest rated show on FOX. It was even outdrew by a show on the CW, which should never beat one of the major 4. Granted, that show was Smallville(2.387 million), but it is still on the CW.

The only network that can be somewhat happy with their Friday numbers is NBC, oddly enough. NBC was able to finish in second place for the night by averaging 6.5 million viewers per hour. They also finished second in viewers 18-49, which makes one of the few times they’ve finished that high in either category this season. The strength of Law & Order(6.6 million) and Dateline:NBC(7.4 million), both of which finished second in their timeslots, helped to make their case.

You may have noticed that I didn’t say that Jay Leno helped make NBC the number two network on Friday. That is because, as usual, Jay finished last in his timeslot with 5.4 million viewers, losing a full 2 million viewers from his Dateline lead-in. It is good to know that on the one bright night on NBC’s schedule, Jay Leno is still there to fuck it up.

Well, this coming week is still chock full of premieres. I’m not entirely sure I’ll be watching EVERYTHING. In fact, I don’t think I’ll be watching many more premieres.

So, here’s what’s happening next week:

Monday, Sept. 28

Lie to Me, 9 p.m. (Fox)

Trauma, 9 p.m. (NBC)

I considered watching Lie to Me, and I’m wondering if I should even bother trying to record it. To be perfectly honest, my Monday nights are all booked up. With everything on CBS and of course House, I don’t think I want to kill my DVR by overloading it. Besides, I think by that point, my DVR will say 95% full. Just a guess.

Tuesday, Sept. 29

Hell’s Kitchen, 8 p.m. (Fox)

Shark Tank, 8 p.m. (ABC)

Dancing With the Stars, 9 p.m. (ABC)

This is an interesting night for television. As in, there is nothing on that I would actually be interested in. I think I’d like to use Tuesdays as a day to catch up on what I HAVEN’T already watched on my DVR. I’ve always loved Hell’s Kitchen, though… We shall see.

Wednesday, Sept. 30

Hank, 8 p.m. (ABC)

The Middle, 8:30 pm. (ABC)

Wednesday… Wednesday… Wednesday. Hmm.. what to watch… I think I’m not down with the premieres this week.

Thursday, Oct. 1

Private Practice, 10 p.m. (ABC)

I haven’t watched this show since the first season. I won’t be picking it back up. Mostly because Thursday is another DVR-heavy night, with tons to watch. And also, Jay Leno seems to be on at 10, and Chriso loves to watch it.

Friday, Oct 2

‘Til Death, 8:30 p.m. (Fox)

Stargate Universe, 9 p.m. (Syfy)

Um, again, nothing I really want to watch. I’m down for another week and potentially AWESOME episode of Dollhouse.

Sunday, Oct. 3

America’s Funniest Home Videos, 7 p.m (ABC)

Three Rivers, 9 p.m. (CBS)

Well, again, no. Simpsons. Family Guy. Perhaps a movie. But the premieres are still lacking by this point.

What will YOU be watching this week?

NFL Preseason Football for Thursday, August 27, 2009

As much as I would really like to see Michael Vick’s first game with the Philadelphia Eagles against the Jacksonville Jaguars (and perhaps they will change the game if public demand grows), it appears that we will be previewing the Miami Dolphins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers game instead, which is still a great game!

Miami is 2-0 and coming off a 27-17 win over Carolina. The Dolphins are a team built in the Bill Parcells mold. They aren’t flashy, they don’t wow you, but they get the job done. We all know the 2008 story for the Fins. 1-15 the prior year, they stormed the league and made the playoffs, concluding a remarkable turnaround. They won’t sneak up on anyone this year as Sparano and company are on the radar.

Miami Offense

The epitomy of an efficient, non high octane offense. The Dolphin’s attack revolves around running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams to power them. Chad Pennington is one of the most accurate passers in the NFL, but we all know the knock on his arm strength. He relies on reading defenses and anticipation to beat teams. The Dolphins were the first team to successfully use the Wildcat offense, with Ronnie Brown taking direct snaps. This year, they’ve added former Mr. Everything from West Virginia, Pat White, to not only add depth at QB, but to perhaps spice up the Wildcat attack. The receivers aren’t household names, but Ted Ginn Jr is the deep threat, with Camarillo and Bess running the possession routes. They’ll kill you with efficiency if the defense gives up 4 yards a pop. Pennington will play a half, and then give way to Chad Henne, who should take them the rest of the way.

Miami Defense

A different group than most remember, although there is one new yet familiar face. Jason Taylor is back with Miami, and looks to provide the pressure. Joey Porter, his mouth, and Channing Crowder will be bringing the lumber at linebacker and the defensive backfield features Vontae Davis, Will Allen, and Yeremiah Bell. The run a 3-4 defense, and have the parts to be successful. No official word, but expect the starters to go a full half before coming out.

Now, as for the Bucs, Once again the Bucs come into a game with the expectations to name a starter when it’s completed. After a close win against Jacksonville, the Bucs are looking to chalk up back to back wins in their first home game of the year. This will be a key game in shaping the team as players are juggled into new positions

Bucs Defense

Big changes this week as Jermaine Phillips slides back to safety, Angelo Crowell hits the IR, and Geno Hayes looks (for now) to take over the WLB position. The front four will need to continue pressuring the QB. The run defense has been fairly stout thus far, and will receive a good test on ability and discipline with the Fins attack coming into town. The secondary will have to avoid the big plays against them and try to create some turnovers this week, as last week was a lesson in what not to do on defense.

Bucs Offense

We all know the big story. Who will be the QB? Each starter will go 1.5 quarters to see who can win the job. There still are some battles at running back (who knew) and wide receiver. Something to key on is the progress the OL makes this week. We need to continue to see progress being made, holes being opened and assignments being understood. When the starters are in, expect a more balanced attack, particularly to see how the run game does, and how the quarterbacks handle all situations.

Bucs Previous Game

A down to the wire win over Jacksonville, highlighted by Freemans, score and stumble. The Bucs sit at 1-1 after their win at half empty Jacksonville and look to continue on. Big plays were a part of both side of the ball.

Top Story Lines – Tampa Bay

Obviously the QB battle, but how about Cadillac seeing his first time since shredding his other knee? Word is, he will be the last player introduced. Flip moving back to safety is a move to watch, as well as the battle at kicker (if both play) and for the third wide receiver spot.

Montagem: Sanny Saraiva

Fall Season 2009/2010

Domingo, 2 de Agosto

Defying Gravity, 1ª temporada (ABC)

Sexta, 7 de Agosto

Psych, 4ª temporada (USA)
Monk, 8ª temporada (USA)

Top Chef, 6ª temporada (Bravo)

Quinta, 20 de Agosto

Project Runway, 6ª temporada (Lifetime)

90210, 2ª temporada (CW)
Melrose Place (2009), 1ª temporada (CW)
Sons of Anarchy, 2ª temporada (FX)

Quarta, 9 de Setembro

America’s Next Top Model, 13ª temporada (CW)
Glee, 1ª temporada (FOX)

Quinta, 10 de Setembro

Supernatural, 5ª temporada (CW)
The Vampire Diaries, 1ª temporada (CW)

The Jay Leno Show, 1ª temporada (NBC)

Bones, 5ª temporada (FOX)
Community, 1ª temporada (NBC)
Fringe, 2ª temporada (FOX)
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 5ª temporada (FX)
Parks and Recreation, 2ª temporada (NBC)
Survivor: Samoa (CBS)
The Office, 6ª temporada (NBC) – Comédia sofisticada.

Curb Your Enthusiasm, 7ª temporada (HBO)
Bored to Death, 1ª temporada (HBO)

Segunda, 21 de Setembro

Accidentally on Purpose, 1ª temporada (CBS)
The Big Bang Theory, 3ª temporada (CBS)
Castle, 2ª temporada (ABC)
CSI: Miami, 8ª temporada (CBS)
Dancing With the Stars, 9ª temporada (ABC)
Heroes, 4ª temporada (NBC)
Two and a Half Men, 7ª temporada (CBS)

The Forgotten, 1ª temporada (ABC)
The Good Wife, 1ª temporada (CBS)
NCIS, 7ª temporada (CBS)
NCIS: Los Angeles, 1ª temporada (CBS)

Quarta, 23 de Setembro

Cougar Town, 1ª temporada (ABC)
Criminal Minds, 5ª temporada (CBS)
CSI: NY, 6ª temporada (CBS)
Eastwick, 1ª temporada (ABC)
Gary Unmarried, 2ª temporada (CBS)
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, 11ª temporada (NBC)
Modern Family, 1ª temporada (ABC)
The New Adventures of Old Christine, 5ª temporada (CBS) – Outra que acompanho bem tangencialmente, mas, que, sempre, acabo gostando.
Parenthood, 1ª temporada (NBC)

Quinta, 24 de Setembro

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, 10ª temporada (CBS)
Flash Forward, 1ª temporada (ABC)
Grey’s Anatomy, 6 ª temporada (ABC)
The Mentalist, 2ª temporada (CBS)

Sexta, 25 de Setembro

Brothers, 1ª temporada (FOX)
Dollhouse, 2ª temporada (FOX)
Ghost Whisperer, 5ª temporada (CBS)
Law & Order, 20ª temporada (NBC)
Medium, 6ª temporada (CBS)
Numb3rs, 6ª temporada (CBS)

Southland, 2ª temporada (NBC)

Sábado, 26 de Setembro

Saturday Night Live, 35ª temporada (NBC)

Domingo, 27 de Setembro

The Amazing Race, 15ª temporada (CBS)
American Dad, 5ª temporada (FOX)

The Cleveland Show, 1ª temporada (FOX)
Cold Case, 7ª temporada (CBS)

Family Guy, 8ª temporada (FOX)

Lie to Me, 2ª temporada (FOX)
Trauma, 1ª temporada (NBC)

Quarta, 30 de Setembro

Hank, 1ª temporada (ABC)
The Middle, 1ª temporada (ABC)

Quinta, 1º de Outubro

Private Practice, 3ª temporada (ABC)

Sexta, 2 de Outubro

‘Til Death, 4ª temporada (FOX)
Stargate Universe, 1ª temporada (Syfy)

Terça, 6 de Outubro

Scare Tactics, 1ª temporada (Syfy)

Nip/Tuck, 6ª temporada (FX) – Acompanho Nip Tuck desde o início.

South Park, 13ª temporada (Comedy Central)

Sexta, 9 de Outubro

Sanctuary, 1ª temporada (Syfy)
Ugly Betty, 4ª temporada (ABC)

V, 1ª temporada (ABC)

2010 – Estreias e séries confirmadas

Caprica, 1ª temporada – 22 de Janeiro
24, 8ª temporada – Janeiro
American Idol, 9ª temporada – Janeiro
LOST, 6ª temporada – Janeiro
Damages, 3ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Breaking Bad, 3ª temporada – Sem data confirmada

Party Down, 2ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Royal Pains, 2ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Burn Notice, 4ª temporada – Sem data confirmada

Big Love, 4ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Dexter, 5ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Entourage, 7ª temporada – Sem data confirmada

Friday Night Lights, 4ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Friday Night Lights, 5ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Nurse Jackie, 2ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Scrubs, 9ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
United States of Tara, 2ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
Happy Town, 1ª temporada – Sem data confirmada
In Plain Sight, 3ª temporada – Sem data confirmada

O elenco, correto e irrepreensível, consegue traduzir perfeitamente o terror e o pânico os quais a família fora submetida à época.

Joe Manganiello is one heckuva long name. But just say Owen and One Tree Hill fans know exactly who

Joe Manganiello is one heckuva long name. But just say Owen and One Tree Hill fans know exactly who he is. Manganiello’s credits also include Spider-Man, How I Met Your Mother, American Heiress, ER, Til Death and Behind Enemy Lines: Columbia.

Manganiello spoke with me about Owen’s future in Tree Hill, his memories from the set and his upcoming projects.

TeenDramaWhore: What was the audition process like for One Tree Hill? Did you have any idea at the time that Owen would go on to appear in more than just a few episodes?

Joe Manganiello: I auditioned against 20-30 guys. They called me in to read twice and then let me know I got it. They sent me three scripts at once so I knew I would be around for at least that long… -but- the first director I worked with was a complete asshole to me… He came up to me after the first take of my first scene on my first day of shooting and started the most disrespectful things any director has ever said to me… I’ve never been talked to like that at work and I’ve worked on really dense classical material with Moscow art theatre directors… I mean here we are doing a simple flirting scene between Brooke and Owen and this jerk doesn’t even pull me aside… He walks up to me in earshot of the rest of the crew and says… “who hired you?” to which I replied… “the show creator Mark Schwahn and the producer Joe Davola.” “in LA?” “yes.” “did you do that?” “well, we didn’t do that scene in the audition but yeah… that’s pretty much what I did…” He then proceeded to lecture me on what he thinks bartenders are like for several minutes until I interrupted him and suggested that “maybe I could smile more… how would that be?” “yeah, okay… try that…” It was brutal… I was a bartender when I was younger… I worked in bars and clubs from the time I was 16 years old… And I’ve been flirting with pretty girls since long before that… How far off the mark was I??? It took everything in me to not punch this old guy in the face… But I kept my mouth shut and put my head down and did the scene… And I’ve been on the show ever since… That one scene turned into 12 episodes and would have probably been more if I didn’t leave to shoot “Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia.”

TDW: Do you have a favorite scene or storyline from your time on the show?

Manganiello: I loved “Browen” and acting with Sophia Bush [Brooke]… I thought that there was a lot of chemistry in our relationship and I was excited to see what would have happened if we had a kid together.

TDW: Two of your most memorable scenes, I think, are when you rescued Rachel (Danneel Harris) and when you surprised Brooke in her car. In the former, it was the first time we saw depth and range in your character. In the latter, well, nudity is always noteworthy and it was repetition of a motif used throughout the series. What did you think of those scenes when you read the script, filmed them and/or watched them on TV?

Manganiello: The nudity in the back of the car made me nervous [ed note: episode 6.9, Sympathy for the Devil] … But I’ve found that if I get nervous… Then it’s usually going to be a good scene… I was in a play in new york where I was full frontal nude and it was intense… I also did a show about my life in college in which I started out naked in the Terminator pose while heavy metal was blazing through these speakers… So I’m no stranger to it… But it sure does get your heart pounding… That coupled with the fact that a bunch of fans hung out across the street and were taking pictures with their camera phones made for an interesting morning of filming… But I must say… I loved the end product… I thought that that scene was hilarious… I thought that the “Browen” relationship brought some much needed laughter to an otherwise extremely dark season six.

TDW: Were you familiar with Slamball before it was written into the script? What was it like shooting those scenes?

Manganiello: I knew that Slamball had existed but I didn’t understand the rules and didn’t realize that it was a professional league and had been around for as long as it had… I had two weeks of training before we started shooting and four days in I pulled a muscle next to my spine. I thought that because of the level of pain that I was in that I had cracked a vertebrae. I mean, it hurt to lay down. It was really scary. I was in so much pain. My poor girlfriend at the time was really scared. She didn’t know what to do… I went in for an MRI and I was prepared for the worst but they found that it was just a pulled muscle and would heal completely. They put me on some high powered anti-inflamatory pills and I got back in there just in time to film the scenes… The actual shooting days were extremely long and grueling. A lot of my action involved getting a full head of steam and colliding with guys who were all-American college linebackers. I can only describe it like repeatedly recreating a car crash for 16 hours every day. Oh, the things I do for my art…

TDW: Owen’s storyline was left a bit open-ended. He slept with Millicent (Lisa Goldstein) and then we haven’t seen him since really. Do you think he’ll be back?

Manganiello: Mark said he would… I’m just not sure how, for how long, or in what capacity… But if it were up to me I’d come back right now.

TDW: In another interview you’ve done, you mentioned you filmed a scene where Brooke and Owen ended up together. Can you tell me more about that?

Manganiello: Not much more to tell… Owen and Brooke were originally scripted to wind up together and we shot those scenes but the producers had other plans for them and had us reshoot a different plot…

TDW:You have a big on-line presence, especially with your fans on Facebook. In years past you weren’t able to do that. What’s it been like interacting with your fans so much?

Manganiello: It’s been a blast… I love my fans!!!

TDW: Are you still in touch with any of the OTH cast members?

Manganiello: I keep in touch with Sophia and James [Lafferty, Nathan] and Mark and Joe… And I hang out with Robbie [Jones, Quentin] in LA.

TDW: What upcoming projects do you have?

Manganiello: I just pitched a movie to Lionsgate that I am writing and will produce and star in… So that’s exciting… And I can’t officially announce it yet but I just received word that I will be returning to one of the three shows that I recur on…

TDW: Lastly, just for fun, describe Owen in three words and describe yourself in three words.

Manganiello: For both: strong, grounded, sensitive…

Come back next Sunday for another exclusive interview!

Apologies for the blog-absence, but I’ve been doing this:

… for these people:

And really haven’t had the time. However, I’m back now with sleeves rolled up (which looks frankly ridiculous since I’m currently wearing a T-shirt) and ready to get back to work.

How are you all?

Have you been keeping well?

If you enjoyed the last post about turd-rattlingly crazy fans, why not become one yourself?

The following link is to the fan page for my probably-next-to-be-filmed feature film, ’til Death. The clever folks in charge are asking if you’d like to become fans, here:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/til-Death/90024768500

Personally, I think it’s fucking mental to become a fan of something you’ve never seen and which currently doesn’t exist; but I’ve done it anyway since I should at least pretend to be supporting my own career. If you feel the urge to do the same, that would be lovely.

Thank you in advance.
