Joanna Newsom in Armani; image courtesy of wmagazine.com

So W just dropped news that Joanna Newsom has a proper follow-up to Ys and the subsequent Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band EP, the particulars to which twentyfourbit.com elaborated, all of which I know about thanks to GRCA’s Emily Marks.

Now, I’m not sure why it’s taking her so long to make another full-length, which I’m assuming Drag City is releasing. Some might speculate that her hiatus might be due to her relationship with SNL’s Andy Samberg. And while I have no problem with giving Samberg a good feminist hard time, I’m not entirely sure if her absence can be attributed to playing house. With recent appearances in trendy fashion magazines like W, much as she did earlier in her career with publications like PAPER, I think it might have something to do with playing dress-up.

The boys of Lonely Island with their dates at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards; image courtesy of aceshowbiz.com

Yikes! I realize those last two sentences might have infantilized the singer, something choruses of music critics do any time they call her voice “child-like.” What I mean is that Newsom has been mingling in the fashion world. Perhaps it’s no surprise that a long-haired, full-lipped, leggy white lady recording artist can get designers to take notice. However, I find it particularly interesting who she’s syncing up with, how this might help construct her image, and what all this might suggest about the commodification of indie. Because she’s not just putting on Armani. She’s friends with Rodarte, waxing pretentious about the collaborative process and wearing their designs to in-the-know, downtown fêtes.

Joanna Newsom representing Rodarte's Fall 2008 collection; image courtesy of obsoleteantics.blogspot.com

Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who created a label honoring their mother’s maiden name, Rodarte, have made quite a splash in the fashion world and on the red carpet over the past few years. They seem like cool ladies with whom I’d definitely want to watch some movies. Yet I’m still on the fence about their decidely avant-garde design aesthetic. I almost like a lot of it, but it gets way too drapey and twee at times — particularly when factoring in the cost.

Natalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon’s dresses for the 2009 Oscars were vivid shades of pink and blue, but the knotty bodice patterns and woozy detailing made me a bit nauseous. Similar situation with the dress Tilda Swinton wore for a premiere of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – loved the color palette, wanted to rip off the sleeves. And in theory, I like the Rodarte sweater Kristen Stewart wore in last January’s Teen Vogue, but in actual practice, I have a hunch that I could find some moth-eaten angora free of charge if I just brave the family attic.

Cute sweater or is Kristen Stewart just wearing the empress's new cardigan?; image courtesy of flickr.com

That said, I like that Rodarte work with retailers like the Gap and Target to make their clothes more accessible and affordable. And they have made some killer, coveted items that I’d snap up if I had the money.

Reese Witherspoon's minty fresh Rodarte minidress; image courtesy of girladvantage.com

Michelle Obama wore a 2007 Rodarte dress to meet with Queen Rania in April 2009; image courtesy of paulrfrost.blogspot.com

But Newsom and Rodarte seems an interesting match. Though musicians pairing up with designers is nothing new (see also: Cher and Bob Mackie, Madonna and Jean-Paul Gaultier, Courtney Love and Christina Aguilera representing Versace, M.I.A. representing Marc Jacobs), something seems pretty perfect with the alignment here. Perhaps with the three ladies’ talk about collaborative processes, we’ll get to see a Newsom-designed collection, as we did with Chloë Sevigny’s 2008 collection for Opening Ceremony.

Chloë Sevigny models her own designs for Opening Ceremony, convincing this blogger that t-shirts can be successfully paired with strapless dresses; image courtesy of stylefrizz.com

This pairing might be read alongside what commercial ventures Newsom has entertained. In an era that has seen many independent artists rely upon advertising and television shows to get their music heard, Newsom’s music has been featured in several places. Often she has elected that her music be used in documentary work. However, The Milk-Eyed Mender’s “Sprout and the Bean” was featured in Victoria’s Secret’s Dream Angels ad campaign. Note that her voice is not heard in this spot.

Or it could be that a dress is just a dress. Which is fine too. But while I’m excited about hearing Newsom’s new album, I’ll have two labels on my mind when it comes out: Drag City and Rodarte.

Título original: Burn after reading
País: USA
Estreno en USA: 12/09/2008
Estreno en España: 10/10/2008
Productora: Working Title Films
Director: Joel Coen y Ethan Coen
Guión: Joel Coen y Ethan Coen
Reparto: George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Brad Pitt

Sinopsis:

Przez cały film jesteśmy świadkami ćpania, drobnych rozbojów, mordobić, przemocy w rodzinie itd., a wszystko to ukazane w dość surowym, mrocznym stylu.

Film wymęczył mnie swoją wtórnością i analizą tematu.

A niestety takie jest podejście obu panów w swoim debiucie – stworzyć przytłaczające obrazy z dominacją ciemnej zieleni, brązu i żółci, czyli kolorów potęgujących wrażenie brudu i moralnej degradacji. Pojedynek wygrywa nieznacznie „Nil by Mouth” z oceną 1/3+, a „War Zone” dostaje 1/3-.

Do obecnej w „The Limits of Control” surowości nie przyzwyczaiły mnie nawet takie obrazy jak „Dead Man” czy „Stranger Than Paradise”.

Blonde (bo tak nazywa się najciekawsza chyba z napotkanych przez bohatera osób), ujawnia swoje upodobania filmowe następującymi słowami: „The best films are like dreams, you’ve never sure you‘ve really had. Sometimes I like in films, when people just sit there, not saying anything”.

Kolejny film Jarmuscha, wpisany w schemat drogi i niejako kino gangsterskie (w zupełnie inny sposób niż hip-hopowy „Ghost Dog”), jest najbardziej odrealnionym i dziwacznym obrazem reżysera.

Forget about “balls out” acting, what really impresses me these days are the actresses who bare their bushes, and it’s about time. I’m not talking your average porn star. I mean respected actresses who win prizes at Cannes (although I must admit that line is getting blurred all the time). Let’s take a look at some notable examples of renowned actresses who have exposed their nether regions for art:

A terrific actress and truly beautiful, Julianne Moore proved she was a real red head in Altman’s Short Cuts (1993).

Another fabulous redhead is the great Tilda Swinton in an equally great film Julia (2008). Tilda acts with her boobs and her crotch in this movie and she’s genius. Trust me, see it! Plus she utters probably the best line reading in the past thirty years of cinema, “You! I wouldn’t wipe my ass with you!”

Kate Winslet in Holy Smoke (1999). I love seeing Kate Winslet nude in movies and Jane Campion captures a nice full frontal shot of her young, gorgeously zaftig body in this film that I loved and hardly anyone saw. Kate Winslet is probably the best film actress alive today, and she’s famous for revealing a “less than perfect” body. Of course “less than perfect” means she’s a size 8 as opposed to a size 2, which by Hollywood standards makes her a plus size, which means that I’m really fat.

Isabella Rossellini went from gorgeous lounge goddess draped in a blue velvet gown to emerging from the hedges of a suburban lawn naked, brutally exposed and bruised in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986). Her full frontal reveal was done in a long shot, but it sent shock waves of fascination and repulsion. Lynch later trumped it in with his hot lesbian scene in Mulholland Drive (2001), but for some reason gorgeous brunette actress Laura Harring’s “down there” is digitally scrambled. WTF? I wonder why that decision was made. Ratings perhaps? Who knows, it’s one of the hottest sex scenes ever filmed. Mulholland Drive is a great film, probably my favorite film from the past decade. In fact, I think it’s time for another screening.

Speaking of Mulholland Drive, Naomi Watts’ masturbation scene is Oscar worthy for its realism, but the big prize for baring it all, and I mean ALL is Charlotte Gainsborough in Antichirst (2009). I just saw it last week and it’s still fresh in my mind and in my nightmares.
Charlotte Gainsborough looking like a young Patti Smith with a soft voice that is capable of escalating into horrific shrieks is the perfect casting for Von Trier’s twisted fairy tale of a movie. I threw my scarf over my head and closed my eyes during the genital mutilation scenes, but they were wide open during the scene when she’s down on the ground in a forest masturbating completely naked. Whoa! That shocked me just because it was so raw and so real.

I am sure there are other examples, but these are the ones that come to mind. Art cinema will always push the boundaries, and I think it’s about time that sex is depicted truthfully. I don’t know if Antichrist is a great film, but its power to break through a barrier of what can be considered appropriate for cinema versus pornography cannot be denied. I don’t think I will ever want to film what Von Trier does in Antichrist, but his willingness to “go there” encourages me to be bolder in my vision as a filmmaker. And the actresses who also “go there”? Sexuality is part of being human. For an actress to depict that truthfully in the hands of a director’s artistry is an exercise in trust. It’s very interesting to contemplate what separates a Charlotte Gainsborough, looking chic on the red carpet at Cannes and a porn star doing the same thing in Vegas. And while we’re showing it all, why not show the guys’ stuff too. Did Willem Dafoe’s dick double have to belong to a well-endowed porn actor? Couldn’t he just be an average size, or can’t we handle that naked truth yet?

by Nate Bell

Mother is bolstered by a powerful performance by Kim Hye-ja, whose credits prior to this one were so sparse (this is only her third film in three decades) that it took a little digging to discover that she is actually a respected Korean star of television and stage. It’s unlikely that she will ever be forgotten after Mother is released. This is the kind of role that actresses long for their entire careers, and Kim does wonders with it, filling every close-up with intense fascination.

Bong Joon-ho’s latest film tells the story of an overly nurturing mom (Kim) who lives in a quiet suburb with her 28-year-old son Do-joon (Bin Won). Their relationship is close-bordering-on-creepy—she eyes him watchfully through the window of the herb shop where she works, observes him as he relieves himself in an alley, and, in a scene that easily trips the Oedipal alert, shares a bed with him (though nothing more is implied). Do-joon is a good-looking kid but not very bright, and prone to blackouts brought on by inexperienced boozing. When a local girl is murdered, her body found conspicuously slumped over a ledge in the center of town, Do-joon becomes the prime suspect. Despite all evidence pointing his way, Mother decides to investigate the crime and free her son from blame.

The story, on which Bong shares credit with Park Eun-kyo, bears a faint resemblance to the superb 1949 Max Ophuls thriller The Reckless Moment, later remade as The Deep End with Tilda Swinton. It differs crucially in this way: The mother in The Reckless Moment acts under the assumption that her son is guilty; the mother in Mother is convinced her son is innocent. (“He wouldn’t hurt a water bug!”) Both, however, are motivated by single-minded devotion to family. Later we are given clues as to why she is so committed to her son, and they are not particularly pretty.

Bong, one of the bright lights of Korean cinema, made a small splash on this side of the pond with The Host in 2007, although his real breakthrough was the 2005 serial killer procedural Memories of Murder. Mother suggests the work of a minor master—steady, controlled, carefully calibrated, and with that distinctively Eastern sensibility that pauses to look at things like wood being sinisterly sliced, a pool of water creeping over kitchen tile, an expanding pool of blood. The film is about 20 minutes too long, but it reveals its disturbing secrets at exactly the right moments, and there is a sly sense of humor that works to temper the suspense without lessening its impact.

Mother is extremely well made but it’s a difficult film to get behind because its vision is so bleak. It’s about self-delusion, and no film that ever dealt with that subject left anyone dancing for joy. There are certain scenes that are meant to be half-funny, half disturbing (as when a character’s front tooth is knocked out during an interrogation), but it’s the disturbing part that sticks in the craw.

A friend sitting next to me at the screening joked that he’d never seen a Korean film that ended happily (even the comedies are downers). He may have been onto something. Certainly Mother, with its pungent, disturbing performance by Kim and its guilty secrets, won’t break the mold.

**WARNING/Clarification** This post is not addressing transsexual lifestyles. The subjects of this post are guys and girls who are “guys” and “girls” Ex. Guy = penis, girl = vagina. Guys that want to be guys but happen to look, dress and act like girls. Girls who want to be girls but look, dress and act like guys.**

In fashion, androgyny is a style. Many celebrities have adopted this style – see photos below. But what really adds to an already confusing world is day-to-day androgyny. Unexpected androgyny!

Have you ever been out and about, and had someone walk by you and had no idea if they were a guy or a girl?

For many of us, this is an every day occurence. With the large number of fat people in this day and age, it’s becoming harder and harder to tell. There are many men who have breasts larger than 50% of the female population. This is disgusting. Most of them make no attempt to hide their hideousness with a mumu or large baggy clothing. Some even resort to buying a man-bra to hold those fatty love sacks in place. We do not want to see this. Please get another XXXL shirt, and write “I AM A MAN” on the back, that way there will be no confusion.

The number of men and boys these days that are wearing skinny jeans is increasing, attempting to make themselves more attractive and show off their skinny legs. The number of men with long flowing locks is also increasing, many men purchase female hair products to maintain such hairstyles. These two factors combined with a sharing of clothes amongst genders provides a large amount of people who look like the opposing sex. This needs to be stopped. If you choose to wear the opposite sexes clothes, for their style, then please use the rest of your outfit to clearly state whether you are male or female.

This problem doesn’t just apply to men. Women are just as bad. Some girls go out of their way to HIDE their distinct womanly features making it even harder to distinguish. Ladies, you were given boobs so show them off. At least let us know that you have them. It’s not like we all have X-Ray vision and can see through your pants to tell if you have a vagina or not. We are all aware that women in the workplace choose to wear coats and suits with broader shoulders to make themselves seem more masculine and equal to their male counterparts. You do not have to look like a man to be powerful. We all know straight men are more turned on by attractive women then women trying to be equal to them. Be a woman, rise above the men and make them unequal to you.

The Queens of Androgyny: Sinead O’Connor, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton

People get mad when you accidentally address them as the wrong gender. And who are they to get mad at you? It’s their fucking fault for being a fatty or wearing manly clothes. If you look like a man, I’m going to address you as a man. I am not going to take the time to try and figure out “what you are.” This isn’t London Fashion Week, you are not famous and cannot pull off the look.

This is even worse when a couple has one member that is genderless. Then you don’t know if the couple is gay, or straight, or IS one a girl? Or which one is the girl?

This is why the The Extreme Tomboy Effect is the bitch of the day. So please, ladies, let us know you’re ladies. And fat guys who look like ladies, lose some fucking weight.

So here’s the thing: if Brad Pitt aged normally, the film wouldn’t be any different. As it is, this is a pompous film that is not as revealing as it thinks it is. It feels like a humourless and ridiculously long version of Forrest Gump. It also feels terribly unconvincing in details (for example, a clock that runs backward is made for a train station and everyone just goes ‘okay’) as well as in the romantic arc of the story and in using characters that have modern sensibilities in period settings. Director David Fincher paces things delicately and has made a technically clever production but is ultimately saved by his star, Brad Pitt. Pitt is the sole reason to the watch as he never puts a foot wrong. He never feels unconvincing, he never feels fake; but everything else does. This isn’t a good film but Brad Pitt is worth watching. If you’re curious.

This movie contains sexual swear words, adult dialogue and strong gun violence and sex scenes.

Julia (2008)
★★★ / ★★★★

Tilda Swinton stars as the title character who is an irresponsible alcoholic and liar who one day agrees to kidnap a kid (Aidan Gould) after the mother (Kate del Castillo) claims that she wants to rescue him from the multimillionaire grandfather. I understand that this can be a difficult film to swallow because of its two hours and twenty minutes running time. Although even I have to admit that it did drag during some parts, I thought that showing Julia’s journey from deep trouble to really, really deep trouble was fascinating in its own strange way. Another reason is that this is primarily a character-driven picture where we see Swinton’s character evolve in subtle ways from beginning to end. I definitely did not expect this film to be so visceral. I thought I was going to see a movie about a woman who was way out of her league as she tries to fight off henchmen and ultimately achieve redemption. I was so wrong because the main character did not want to change, unapologetically lewd and racist. There were times when I thought she really should stop lying to herself (and to others) and admit that she had a problem and that she needed help. But then there were also times when I was glad she was a great liar because her lies sometimes got her out of very complicated (and scary) situations. Without Swinton’s charisma and great timing, I think this film would have essentially fallen apart. Even though the lead character had the negative qualites mentioned prior, I still wanted her to succeed in her plight. In the end, even though she was not the character who appreciated other people’s pity, that’s exactly how I felt toward her. I got the feeling that she was not happy with her life and she ultimately wanted escape because it was too late to turn her life around. I’m giving “Julia” a strong recommendation because it very realistically portrayed people who were drowning in their own desperation. Other people may not agree but I think this film is a diamond in the rough.

One Star out of Ten Stars (*/**********)

The Limits of Control is Jim Jarmusch’s follow-up to Broken Flowers. It basically consists of a travelling man, on some sort of secret mission, going around Spain collecting match boxes from various different people. Each episode follows the exact same pattern; he goes to a room somewhere and doesn’t sleep, does some tai-chi, then goes to a café and orders two shots of espresso in separate cups, then meets whomever it is he is meeting (a selection of characters each more boring than the last, played by a range of actors from Tilda Swinton to John Hurt to Gael Garcia Bernal). They swap match boxes with little codes in them. Oh God, the whole thing is just too tedious for words. I’m surprised they didn’t fall asleep MAKING this film it is that boring.

It seems to be toying with the idea that language and symbols are meaningless, but meaningless in some grand existential way. That perhaps these pointless symbols and exchanges convey an overall, more significant, meaningless. Whatever, I don’t really know. The film left me with NOTHING, and by fuck was it a schlep to get through. Just absolutely unrewarding in every way. The idea that random visuals and dreams and the imagination are actually much more tangible than any sort of imposed order felt in the world is all well and good, if it wasn’t such a DEATHLY BORING concept to begin with, and then on top of this, delivered by Jarmusch in the most tedious and unrewarding way. Urgh just thinking about it makes me angry.

I feel very sorry for anyone who derives any pleasure from film-making such as this, because life is too bloody short. If I ever see Jim Jarmusch I’m going to kick him in the shins for bleeding two hours of my life from me that I can never get back. What a bastard.
