5 años han tardado en volver. Un largo y silencioso lustro en un parón tras Reise, Reise que se ha hecho muy difícil de llevar. Pero ese silencio se ha roto con el lanzamiento de Liebe Ist Für Alle Da, el 6º disco de estudio de Rammstein. El disco en sí me lo reservo para un análisis más profundo, pero hoy voy a hablar del concierto en vivo que dieron en Barcelona el pasado 12 de noviembre.

Y no podemos empezar a hablar de un concierto pasando por alto a los teloneros: Combichrist, un cuarteto noruego de aggrotech, la vertiente mas techno del electro industrial. Dos baterías estrafalarios, 4 teclados para un loco tatuado y una garganta gutural dando berridos. Consiguieron calentar al público, pero en general no gustaron. Quizás esto del aggrotech es una vuelta de rosca innecesaria a estas alturas del chiste.

45 minutos después de que acabara el calentamiento, la banda alemana partía de forma muy cinematográfica trozos de la pared negra que los separaba del escenario y aparecía en el centro el vocalista Till Lindemann con una dentadura luminosa que lanzaba un haz de luz blanca al público a cada sílaba teutona que pronunciaba. Con unos atavíos entre tétricos y horteras, nos deleitaron durante casi 2 horas con 19 temas. Mayoritariamente del último álbum, el que para muchas revistas y webs especializadas, es el mejor de la banda; aunque un servidor de ustedes discrepe, pero no por mucho.

Este álbum ha sido prohibido en Alemania a los menores de edad por su canción Ich Tu Dir Weh (te hago daño), que relata una relación sadomasoquista. Este hecho junto a que Pussy, su primer single, tiene un videoclip con pornografía explícita (NSFW) y que tuvo que ser lanzado en un portal porno alemán, coronan a este disco como el más rebelde de la ya de por sí controvertida banda berlinesa. No es de extrañar que las ventas se hayan disparado, las descargas estén por las nubes y, lo más importante, que los estadios de alrededor de Europa estén repletos de fans. Parece ser que la idioma ya no es un obstáculo.

Un par de docenas de muñecos desnudos colgando del techo del escenario con láseres verdes saliéndoles de los ojos acompañaban la terrible letra de Wiener Blut, un relato en primera persona del padre austíaco que encerró y violó durante 16 años a su propia hija. Para al final, con el estruendo de petardos, dejarlos caer sobre el escenario en la oscuridad. O la lava de chispas que Till Lindemann arroja desde 10 metros de altura sobre el siempre bizarro teclista Flake, en Ich Tu Dir Weh. O rociar a un supuesto intruso con gasolina candente y perseguirlo por todo el escenario. Pero sin duda, la performance más espectacular, y sin desprestigiar el clásico del bote hinchable sobre los espectadores durante Seemann o las diversas lenguas de fuego lanzadas hacia el público, fue la escenificación de Pussy: un enorme pene metálico sobre el que se sienta Till y que empieza a rociar nada menos que espuma sobre nuestras pieles y almas para luego rebozarnos en confetti amarillo y rojo. Como siempre he dicho, los conciertos de Rammstein son oído, vista y mucho tacto.

Ambiente final: Roter Sand

Sin embargo hubo una gran nota disonante que fue como el sonido empezó a fallar en el punto álgido de Frühling in Paris y que no recuperó el equilibrio réplica tras réplica. La voz subía y bajaba a placer, se acoplaban los bajos, se desconectaban sets enteros de pantallas… Un desastre que espero que haya sido subsanado durante el concierto del sábado en Bilbao. Aún así, el público rugió las letras que las instalaciones no trasmitieron y el grupo se llevó un buen sabor de boca de la entrega (y buena dicción alemana) de los casi 13.000 fans catalanes que se agolparon en el estadio.

Más tarde el club de fans RammsteinClub organizó una fiesta aftershow en el club Demonix en l’Hospitalet de Llobregat. La asistencia no fue masiva, lo que hizo que la sesión de DJ Bossma de lo más florido del género gótico industrial sazonado con algunos de los éxitos de Rammstein se pudiera disfrutar como es debido. La sorpresa llegó cuando a eso de las 2 de la madrugada aparecieron algunos miembros del grupo que estuvieron con sus fans hasta que terminó la noche. Y evidentemente los más machos nos acercamos como fangirls a por autógrafos y apretones de manos.

Debo decir que recordaré esta ocasión con gran cariño. El espectáculo, aunque no superó por mucho al del 2004, había sido largamente esperado y fue, en definitiva, ampliamente disfrutado por todos los ahí presentes. Bis bald, amigos!

Abrimos de nuevo de par en par las puertas de nuestra sección Qué canción es mejor con una de mis favoritas de David Bowie, Heroes. Publicada en 1977 en el disco del mismo título (segundo de su “trilogía berlinesa”), el duque blanco la compuso mano a mano con uno de sus productores fetiche, Brian Eno. David Robert Jones nos cuenta una historia de dos amantes en tiempos de la guerra fría con el telón de acero de trasfondo. La melodía tan característica que dibuja la guitarra es obra de uno de los guitarristas fundamentales del rock progresivo, Robert Fripp (miembro de King Crimson). El video que he elegido es el de la actuación en el Live Aid del 13 de julio de 1985.  Por cómo la tocaron en aquella ocasión, por la actitud del público y del propio Bowie, y por ser un día tan especial, es considerada por muchos como la mejor interpretación que ha hecho de la canción.

Fijaros en dos detalles. Cuando presenta a la banda, el de los sintetizadores es Thomas Dolby, afamado músico al que sus compañeros de estudios le apodaron “Dolby” por los Laboratorios del mismo nombre. Y la dedicatoria que hace a su hijo y a todos los niños del planeta, que plasmaba el cambio paulatino en el frío carácter del “camaleón” por una mayor cercanía a su primogénito y más sensibilidad hacia las causas sociales. Duncan Jones, también conocido como Joe Bowie tenía entonces 14 años. Hoy es un prometedor director de cine que ha ganado recientemente el festival internacional de cine fantástico de Sitges por su película Moon.

Se han hecho multitud de versiones como os podéis imaginar. Desde coetáneos de Bowie como Blondie, el grupo de Debbie Harry (ver video), hasta Oasis (ver video) y Kasabian (ver video) pasando por el DJ de moda David Guetta (ver video). Me he decantado por poner una del grupo canadiense Arcade Fire, que además ha compartido escenario con el mismo Bowie en los últimos tiempos por cierto.

Otra de las versiones más logradas fue la que hizo el grupo The Wallflowers, el de Jakob Dylan, el hijo de Robert Zimmerman. La incluyeron en la banda sonora de la película Godzilla en 1998 y es bastante fiel a la original.

El guaperillas de Bon Jovi y sus colegas hicieron su aportación de forma acústica añadiéndole una orquesta. Por este detalle el resultado final se aleja del resto de versiones, dándole otro matiz a la canción.

Por último, la banda finlandesa de metal Apocalyptica, famosa por tocar canciones heavy con violonchelos, se atrevió a hacerla aunque se encuentra fuera de su órbita sonora. Para la ocasión, contaron con la colaboración de Till Lindemann, cantante de Rammstein. Otra peculiaridad más es oirla en otro idioma como el alemán.

Presa prezentă pe Insulă s-a adunat, ca în fiecare zi, la aceeaşi oră (18.00) la cortul unde trebuia să se prezintă capul de afiş al serii pentru Conferinţa de presă. De data asta însă, Managerul de Turneu a urcat la microfon şi a anunţat că interviurile vor fi acordate numai în limba germană. Cine nu cunoaşte limba germană este rugat să părăsească cortul. Am rămas vreo 15 persoane. A venit apoi personal, la fiecare pe rând, şi ne-a pus o întrebare relativ simplă, la care trebuia să răspundem în germană, ca să se convingă că nu a rămas vreun impostor şi să-i mai trieze pe cei cu care se comunica greu în germană.

Apoi, m-a întrebat cu cine doresc să fac interviu. Mă pregătisem pentru Till.

A zis că nimeni nu discută cu Till, s-a uitat la mine, şi a zis căo să fac interviu cu Flake, claviaturistul de la Rammstein.

Nu ştiam nimic personal despre … Flake.

CZB: Când şi cum s-a înfiinţat Rammstein?

Flake: Trupa s-a format în 1993, prin alianţa mai multor muzicieni care cântau sau împreună în alte formaţii locale, sau cu trupe diferite. Ce ne-a unit în primul rând a fost ideea că ne săturasem cu toţii să facem muzica pe care o făceam până în acel moment. Direcţia muzicală menţinută în fostul DDR nu îşi mai avea rostul. Ca şi nouă grupare, am căutat un nou înţeles muzical şi considerăm că am format o nouă direcţie muzicală care ne-a adunat împreună sub numele Rammstein.

CZB: De unde v-a venit ideea să folosiţi efecte pirotehnice pe scenă?

Flake: La un moment dat am vrut, de distracţie, să folosim o petardă pe scenă. La următorul concert, când nu am mai adus petarde cu noi, lumea ne tot întreba de ce nu am mai folosit aceste efecte în concert, că le-a plăcut foarte mult.

De atunci, am dezvoltat spectacolul nostru cu efectele pirotehnice.

CZB: Deci voi nu sunteţi piromani din fire.

Flake: Am observat că focul ne ajută mult în contactul nostru cu publicul. Ne uneşte. Publicul simte căldura … şi noi şi prin asta comunicăm cu fanii noştri.

CZB: Aveţi atestate de pompieri?

Flake: Solistul are acest atestat.

CZB: De ce zic unii că sunteţi din Extrema Dreaptă?

Flake: Pentru că noi ne-am format la vremea când în Germania de est, tendinţa generală a populaţiei era de extremă dreaptă. Pentru că noi nu ne îmbrăcam precum Nirvana şi nu arătam ca alte trupe care aveau succes în topuri la momentul respectiv, ci ne tundeam perie toţi. De aceea multă lume ne-a confundat cu cei din mişcarea de extremă dreaptă; ultrior însă, şi-au dat seama că aceste preconcepţii vizuale erau deplasate.

CZB: Nu vreţi să vi se cunoască identitatea. Astăzi spre exemplu, nu am voie să îmi fac poză cu tine aici.

Flake: Da. Nu dorim să ni se cunoască identitatea privată. Ne-am creat un Mit, care nu are voie să fie distrus. Lumea se aşteaptă de la noi să fim un pic mai supăraţi, iar fanii ar fi dezamăgiţi să ne vadă faţa adevărată. Ar fi exact precum l-ai vedea pe Michael Jackson în training. Nu l-ai mai considera un tip „cool”.

CZB: Ideea machiajului vine de la KISS?

Flake: Nu avem nimic de a face cu cei de la KISS. Faptul că suntem machiaţi pe toată faţă la apariţiile în public (ca şi ei) este o simplă asemănare. Nici unul dintre noi nu este fan KISS.

CZB: De ce daţi aceste interviuri exclusiv în limba germană?

Flake: Noi mai acordăm interviuri şi în limba engleză … când suntem în America. Noi nu vorbim engleza foarte bine. Dacă eu aş vorbi engleza prost, iar reporterul din Ungaria ar vorbi engleza la fel de prost, îţi dai seama că nu ne-am putea înţelege deloc.

CZB: Anumite posturi radio de muzică rock din Germania sunt reticente să vă difuzeze muzica. De ce?

Flake: Din prostie. Pentru că lor nu le place muzica. De aici problema. Mie mi se pare ceva normal.

CZB: Consideri că aveţi mai mulţi fani în Estul sau în Vestul Germaniei?

Flake: La început aveam mai mulţi fani în Est. Pentru că noi veneam din Est, iar publicul de acolo se identifica mai uşor cu noi. Acum însă, consider că avem un număr echilibrat de fani în ambele părţi ale Germaniei. Consider că ne-am impus deja la fel de bine în Franţa sau chiar în întreaga Europă.

CZB: Ce ai simţit în momentul în care cele două Germanii s-au unit?

Flake: Desigur am fost foarte fericit. Pe moment însă am simţit o mică teamă că această Germanie de Est va dispare cu totul. Am observat însă că este foarte greu să schimbi pe om. Din punct de vedere spiritual şi din punct de vedere al emoţiilor, oamenii au rămas în continuare la fel. Eu personal mă simt mult mai bine în Germania de Est decât în Germania de Vest. Bucuria a fost acolo pentru că mi-am dat seama de nenumăratele posibilităţi care o să le am în lumea liberă. Acum putem cânta în întreaga lume!

CZB: De ce consideri că Americanii preferă să vă asculte muzica în limba germană?

Flake: Părerea mea este că americanii sunt foarte încântaţi să asculte şi altceva, în afară de Bruce Springsteen sau Bon Jovi. Ei se bucură de orice li se pare lor nou sau interesant. Le place să cânte cu noi Ja – Nein, Ja – Nein … Iar Hai-Ra-Te-Mih pentru ei sună complet deosebit. Şi noi la rândul nostru, în Germania ne bucurăm când vine un American şi ne cântă … şi noi cântăm cu plăcere alături de el. Consider că omul se bucură când poate avea contact cu ceva străin.

CZB: Dar înainte de a se întâmpla asta, aţi putut crede aşa ceva?

Flake: Nimeni nu îşi putea închipui că se poate întâmpla aşa ceva. Nici acum nu ne vine să credem. În primul rând nu cred că credea cineva din trupă că ne vom putea bucura de atâta succes. Când am format trupa, compuneam muzică şi mergeam la cluburi să cântăm din plăcere muzica care nouă ne făcea plăcere s-o cântăm. Am fost surprinşi de succesul ce l-a putut avea primul album în Germania, la fel ca atunci când am lansat primul album în America. Acum ne propunem doar să vedem ce se va întâmpla. Nu ne aşteptăm să se întâmple nimic mai departe, iar dacă nu este să se întâmple, ne vom retrage pur şi simplu.

CZB: Cum aţi apărut pe albumul de Tribut Depeche Mode cu piesa Stripped?

Flake: Cei de la Depeche Mode ne-au întrebat pur şi simplu: aveţi chef să faceţi un cover după o piesă de a noastră? Noi am răspuns că Da, ne-ar face mare plăcere. Totul a fost foarte lejer şi simplu, şi s-a rezolvat cu un telefon.

CZB: Aţi avut probleme în anumite State din America cu aprobările pentru toate efectele pirotehnice. La Budapesta, în seara asta, o să avem parte de un spectacol integral Rammstein?

Flake: Nu va fi un Show complet Rammstein, pentru că este un recital în cadrul unui Festival mai mare, unde cântă mai multe formaţii şi nu este timp fizic să se construiască întregul ansamblu al decorului scenic pentru acest spectacol. Aşa ceva se poate vedea numai atunci când suntem în turneul nostru, cu întreaga producţie … şi o parte din tribune. În orice caz, aici am venit pregătiţi pentru un show mai mare decât au văzut cei din America.

CZB: Ce ştii despre România?

Flake: Foarte puţin. Ştiu că este o ţară săracă. Mă gândesc că am dori să cântăm cu mare plăcere pe viitor şi în România pentru că eu consider întreaga populaţie din fostul bloc sovietic mult mai prietenoasă şi deschisă.

CZB: Aţi ajuns să cântaţi în Rusia?

Flake: Ne-am duce cu mare plăcere, dar deocamdată au legi foarte stricte şi foarte puţini bani. Este destul de complicat.

Terminasem interviul cu câteva minute mai devreme decât timpul acordat. Mi-am ridicat privirea şi i-am spus lui Flake că nu mai am întrebări. Omul se uită în ochii mei şi mă întreabă dacă sunt sigur. Am zis că da.

A rânjit puţin şi mi-a băgat o remarcă de genul că, da, noi, aici, în sudul Europei, gândim mai încet, pentru că avem parte de atâta soare şi probabil că sunt obosit deja de stat aici atâtea zile în caniculă la acest Festival.

Pe moment am luat-o drept remarcă rasistă şi chiar m-am mirat după toate răspunsurile coerente primite la întrebări … Dar pentru interviu mă documentasem strict pentru Till (solist), nu aveam acces la internet la vremea respectivă; sursa mea de informaţii despre Rammstein fiind revista germană BRAVO, la care revista la care lucram la Cluj era abonată … şi nu mai fusesem niciodată la un concert Rammstein.

În seara respectivă, când am observat faptul că pe scenă, băieţii înscenau diverse poziţii sado-masochiste, iar în majoritatea cazurilor, Till era partea activă, iar Flake era partea pasivă, mi-a picat fisa la genul de întrebări la care Flake se aştepta de la mine la finalul interviului …

La interviu, nu am avut voie să facem poze cu artiştii; la concert doar cei de la revista Wanted (revista muzicală editată de organizatorii Sziget) aveau dreptul să facă poze din faţa scenei.

I don’t usually like covers, especially if it’s of a song I really like. One of the reasons why I don’t like talent/singing type shows like Idol. But I don’t detest all covers. On the contrary, there are some I really like at least at much as the original, maybe even more (Marco Hietala’s vocals alone already makes Nightwish’s High Hopes so much better than the original. And we aren’t even talking about the arrangements yet.). These are usually covers where the musicians give the song a whole new feel and interpretation and play it in their style. O clipe da semana é da música Sonne, da banda Alemã Rammstein. Sonne significa Sol, mas ao invéz de fazer um clipe óbvio, a banda foi um pouco além fazendo uma versão dark da história de Branca de neve e os sete anões. Os anões do clipe são representados pelos integrantes da banda e a Branca de neve do clipe é a modelo Russa Joulia Stepanova.

There is no other band that sounds remotely like Rammstein. The East German sextet’s unique blend of metal, industrial, techno and classical musical elements has made it one of Europe’s most successful rock bands ever since the 1995 release of its debut album HERZELEID (which went platinum in several Euro territories). Charts/Critics

Every single and album has made its way up the European charts. SEHNSUCHT went straight to Number 1 on the Media Control Charts immediately on release and stayed there for five weeks!

SEHNSUCHT also captured the highest praise from some of the most respected rock critics in the U.S., including Chuck Eddy in ROLLING STONE (“a melodramatic sense of melody as muscular as it is mannered”) and SPIN (“…almost unbearable Black Forest sadness lurking beneath their operatic-romantic industrial-metal hybrid… (RAMMSTEIN have) figured out how to buffer their rage with beauty”), Charles M. Young in PLAYBOY (“Rammstein makes Metallica look like pussies. David Lynch

Director of Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, Twin Peaks and Wild At Heart. He licensed two Rammstein songs for the soundtrack of his film Lost Highway before the band had ever released a record in America!

Entertainment

Rammstein are true entertainers. The band’s amazing show has become a worldwide must-see, prompting Kiss to have them along as special guests on a South American tour. Even their sternest critics must grudgingly admit that a Rammstein show is first and foremost great entertainment. Robert Christgau, for example, had originally labeled SEHNSUCHT a “dud” but was later converted by the undeniable Rammstein live experience.

Family Values Tour

Rammstein played the penultimate slot on the tour’s very first year, crossing the North American continent in autumn ‘98 and attracting more attention than ever – especially from the authorities of Worcester, Mass., who intervened when Till, Flake and their plastic strap-on phallus did their “Bück Dich” number. Though a regular part of every Rammstein show, it was perhaps too much of a good thing for the local authorities. “Lascivious conduct” justified their immediate removal from the stage and several hours in holding cells before their release upon payment of a 100 dollar fine and six months’ probation.

Grammy

1999 saw Rammstein nominated, as the first German band ever, in the “Best Metal Performance” category (for “Du Hast”).

Humor

Rammstein have a lot more than some people credit them with. Rammstein’s toying with the dark side of desire is admittedly overdone at times to the point of becoming black comedy. That can lead to misunderstandings.

Imitators

There have been many, especially abroad. Rammstein’s success with HERZELEID and SEHNSUCHT lured record company talent scouts out from behind their desks. In a hope of grabbing a slice of the action, they went in search of Rammstein clones. With more or less modest success. Who wants a copy when you can have the real thing?

Jacob Hellner

Never change a winning team. MUTTER was produced with Jacob Hellner (Clawfinger etc.), who had already twiddled the knobs for HERZELEID and SEHNSUCHT. The band themselves can best explain why: “Jacob is the ideal producer for Rammstein, because he doesn’t intervene in the songwriting. When the songs are ready, we work on them with him to make them even stronger. Another thing: He knows how to give the musicians self-confidence, so they can give of their best during the recording process. And then he is very disciplined and has a regular rhythm. That suits us as a band very well. He concentrates on his work so much that after a day in the studio he is swaying as if he has drunk too much!”

Krauts

Live Shows

USA, Japan, Australia, Europe, South America – there is scarcely anywhere upon earth where Rammstein have not yet set off their rockets. They are one of the few bands in recent years to have defined themselves very largely through their live shows, which in turn are characterized by their vast battery of pyrotechnics, which comes close to a full scale operatic production. Rammstein’s concerts are marked by grand gestures which linger on in the mind’s eye.

Mutter

The new album. Rammstein have continued to develop while avoiding the mistake of sacrificing their own identity. MUTTER sees them doing what they do best: A bombastic mixture of razor-sharp riffs, monolithic song structures, spine-chilling Gothic horror and the lugubrious vocals that never harbored such ambition as on MUTTER. To this they have added some new elements – like jungle-style beats – and these become an integral part of the sound and leave it instantly recognizable. MUTTER is still Rammstein pure an undiluted. Just a little bit more perfect. And more aroused. And more exciting. And a whole lot better. MUTTER has surely brought the band breathtakingly near to its goal of melding the harmonies of pop with the hard riffs of metal.

Nation

Rammstein sing in German. In contrast to most of their colleagues, they never sought to do otherwise. “Why should we?” ask Rammstein. “We wanted to do our own thing, and that has to do with where we come from. And we are from the German nation.”

Director of Pulp Fiction, From Dusk ‘Til Dawn, etc. Rammstein drew on his Reservoir Dogs for the imagery in their video to “Du Hast”, Rammstein’s most successful song to date worldwide.

Remixes

As remixers, Rammstein are on many artists wish lists. Faith No More, Korn and Rob Zombie are only a few of the acts they have worked with to date.

Success

Rammstein have had an ample share of success. They won a 1998 Echo (basically the German Grammy) for best video (“Engel”) and that year’s Viva Comet for best live band (Viva is the national German music video channel). 1999 brought them the Echo for most successful national artist abroad (SEHNSUCHT). After all, Rammstein are the only German band since Kraftwerk to make such an international name for themselves, making it into the U.S. Billboard Top 100, touring extensively here – not to mention nominations for both the Grammy and MTV Europe Music Awards.

Technincs, Pyro-

These are much in evidence at Rammstein’s concerts. Till Lindemann in his blazing asbestos coat is emblematic of every Rammstein show. Till earned qualification as a pyrotechnician specifically to execute Rammstein’s megalomaniacal pyrotechnic effects. Rammstein fans owe the whole gigantic display to an old complaint of the singer: “The songs of HERZELEID were too static. I always felt such a prat in the instrumental passages. I held onto the microphone stand while other front men were dancing or flinging things through the air. But that didn’t suit our music. And it really didn’t suit me. So one day I had these two Roman candles in my hand. And that’s how the whole thing exploded into life.”

Understandings, Mis-

Frequent in the case of Rammstein. The band’s signature mixture of provocative lyrics, Gothic horror and primitive regressive fantasies may have something to do with that. The debate was fuelled recently by the use of excerpts from Leni Riefenstahl films in their video of the cover of Depeche Mode’s “Stripped” (from the Music For The Masses DM tribute), though the band later explained that they were only interested in the artistic value of the images and not their political content.

DVD

LIVE AUS BERLIN. Recorded on August 22 and 23, 1998. Rammstein played a one-time-only escalated version of its classic stage show at Berlin’s Wuhlheide venue.

Sex is a central theme in Rammstein’s songs. Not that they always cast a rosy light on what happens when people come together. Rammstein’s ironic plays on S/M fantasies – as in “Bück Dich” or “Rein Raus” (on MUTTER) – can sometimes lead to misunderstandings.

I am addicted to YouTube, it is official.  My addictive personality makes me do some weird things, typewriters, writing poems, play Quake Wars solidly for 5 hours.  But I am happy to say that like many people that read this blog, I watch YouTube constantly.  It’s a great source of music, and you can discover things that are so bizarre yet compelling, they enlighten and entertain you.  It’s good for dossing around on at work when no one’s looking, but I didn’t say that.

10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps

Thanks to Rock Band, this amazing song has been in my head recently.  I don’t know a lot about this band, but I expect you’ll hear more about them from me soon.   Best score with this song is about 98% on Medium.

9. Garbage – Paranoid (HQ version)

Another Rock Band inspired song.   The hypnotic drums and the Scottish-ness of it all makes it a good head sticker.

8. Nickelback – Gotta be somebody

No matter how much stick they get, the song writing is fantastic.  Chad Kroegers voice always sticks like Uhu to my psyche.  Great power ballad too.

7. Apocalyptica feat. Till Lindemann – Helden (Heroes)

I never realised that Apocalyptica are totally Cello based.  This has to be my favourite cover of all time of any band ever.  Seriously, great song by the Bowie meister, plus Till Lindemann of Rammstein fame providing his unique gravel vocals.

6. Hammerfall – Bloodbound

Hammerfall are big in Sweden.  They come under the interesting genre of ‘power metal’.  It’s a weird sub genre that really came in to itself in the eighties with Kiss and Poison.  This modern take on this genre  is captivating to say the least.

Nuclear powered metal, again from these hit Swedish rockers.

4. Red – Start Again

This hasn’t been released yet officially, not even a video out yet!  But it’s really stuck in my mind.  It’s one of my top played on my iPod, but, but it’s  Christian Rock. Yes, that’s right.   But, it’s good music.  Or is that the idea?  POD were good too, but then, does it really matter?

3. Nightwish – Bye Bye Beautiful

According to my good friend and Nightwish addict Tori, this was written as a response to Tarja (first singer) being kicked out for being useless and bitchy.  I love the power and emotional  feeling that the lyrics convey.

1. Hammerfall – Any Means Necessary

This is the video people.  How do you fit this really odd title in to a song?  I wanted to know, and now I am hooked.  This is their first video with their new guitarist Pontus Norgren.  What a name.  But he demonstrates why in this riff filled feast of power chords the the most over the top video I have seen in a while.  GENIUS.
