Titled “Hulkamania” and shot by Keith Loutit, I’m pretty intrigued at the effect this lens has, sort of creating the appearance of a miniaturized version of a scene. To be honest, I’ve never really gotten a good look at tilt-shift photography, much less a video using such a lens. As I began watching this my first thought was how much it reminded me of claymation.

According to Loutit’s Vimeo page the video was shot on Nikon D3 and D3s. Unfortunately my D2xs doesn’t have the ability to shoot HD video, but I’d LOVE to try out a tilt-shift lens anyway.

I did a little searching and discovered Keith’s blog, and learned that he’s based in Australia which is pretty cool in my book. Lately I’ve really been thinking about how much I’d love to take a trip to Australia, or perhaps even try to work there for a while. It would be an amazing location to photograph.

His work is interesting, using tilt-shift lenses and I imagine other types of equipment to create a unique perspective in an image or video. Check it out!

Tilt shift photography is the method of taking a photograph and applying digital image manipulation

Tilt shift photography is the method of taking a photograph and applying digital image manipulation techniques to make the photograph appear like a miniature model. Not all photographs are conducive to titl-shift techniques. However, it is fairly easy using many image manipulation software programs. Software such as GIMP or Photoshop have historically been good choices.

There is a quick way to make a tilt-shift image. First select an image. The best image is one that is typically taken from a higher perspective. The image’s focus will be in the foreground with a scene behind this. There are likely better words to describe this but consider a good scene that you could imagine constructed as a miniature scene.

Open the image in Photoshop (for this demo). Press Q to enter quick mask mode. Pres G to open the Gradient Tool. Make sure you are using the reflected gradient option for htis tool. Draw a vertical line over the x-axis of the image where your focus will be. Once the mask has been applied press Q to exit the quick mask mode. Select filter -> Blur -Lens Blur and adjust as desired. Select Ok, and Save As… a new file name. Experiment as you wish.

Found this video on my homepage on Vimeo. At first you think it’s miniature model then it appears to be real life and then the video just tricks you again. It’s part of a new trend in video-making using tilt-shift lenses. Pretty cool stuff.

I’ll keep it light on this Friday and attempt to dazzle with the visual brilliance that’

I’ll keep it light on this Friday and attempt to dazzle with the visual brilliance that’s graced my dual monitors this week. It’s my opinion that good visual journalism does any of a number of things:

Makes a difficult concept easier to understand

Conveys what words can’t

Adds lasting value to news of the moment

In order of those points (and descending order of which were my favorite)…

1. Thursday’s Everett Herald

It won’t embed here for some maddening reason, but the front page of Thursday’s Everett Herald was a stroke of brilliance. Designers took Washington state’s budget deficit and plotted the various expenses contributing to it as a series of dots, varying in size based on how much they contributed to the deficit (they explain how they scaled this at the link). As I said on Twitter, I’m not easily impressed by print graphics. This one resonated with me because it took a complicated—and let’s face it: boring—topic and made it instantly digestable. Kudos, as well, to whichever editor OK’d it for the front page. It’ll stick in my mind for a while.

2. Big Picture Blog’s Large Hadron Collider gallery

When does The Big Picture not hit it out of the park? The latest LHC gallery puts in full view the amount of work and ingenuity involved in creating and fixing the machine that will recreate The Big Bang. The fact that humans can do this astounds me and leaves me struggling for words, which is why I’m glad I have this:

3. Tilt-shift, time lapse of the 2009 World Series

I can’t stand the New York Yankees, but this video makes me OK with watching them win the World Series (over and over).

I found an interesting article regarding the 35mm technique called tilt-shift where the camera does exactly that. This results in an interesting effect that can easily be manipulated in Photoshop, where the camera’s lens is tilted & radially shifted giving the effect of extreme shallow depth of field. First created by photographer Olivo Barbieri born in 1954 from Italy who created the ’tilt-shift’ as a result from his passion of photographing urban landscapes. Olivo Barbieri Wikipedia

Doesn’t tilt shift photography (or the fake photoshop version) look good? Having seen some of these shots it’s hard not to look at the world in a slightly different way.

Reminds me of Patrick Heron’s claim that art doesn’t reflect what we see but rather dictates what we see. In the case of tilt shift, we thought model villages and railways looked that way because they were models and not the real thing. Tilt shift shows something different is happening: we can now make the real thing look just like a model if we wish.

“I have always claimed that painting’s prime function is to dictate what the world looks like … What we imagine to be the ‘objective’ look of everything and anything is largely a complex, a weave of textures, forms and colours which we have learned, more or less unconsciously, from painting, and have superimposed upon external reality. The actual ‘objective’ appearance of things (of anything and everything) is something that does not exist…”
Patrick Heron, 1996 “Solid Space in Cézanne”, Modern Painters Vol 9 (1).

Scott and I turn 30 within 10 weeks of each other so we decided to combine our gifts into one super-cool Canon 450D camera with twin lens kit! Now, we just have to learn how to use it…. eek! One reason for acquiring this kick-arse camera is so that we can take some gorgeous pics of our newborn son or daughter.

One technique I want to learn is “tilt shift photography”, although it seems easier if you have Photoshop since specialized lenses are expensive. It makes real-life scenes appear to be miniature. I can think of some very cute uses! There are tutorials here, here and here that might be useful.

For those of us who want every picture to be reminiscent of the model train sets of our youth, the a

For those of us who want every picture to be reminiscent of the model train sets of our youth, the answer is here, and the answer is a Photoshop cheat sheet. Transform your real life imagery into imaginary city-scapes that make even the great New York City look itty bitty with a few slight of hand tricks of the trade.

You will need a copy of Photoshop CS or later to be able to follow along with this tutorial.

STEP 1

Set Gradient Mask

Open the image you have chosen to work with in Photoshop. Enter Quick Mask mode by pressing the Quick mask tool button underneath the color palette on your tool bar or by holding down Q. Once you’ve switched into QM mode click on the gradient tool. Set the colors to default black and white by pressing D, then make sure to switch them around using the double sided arrow next to the color boxes. Once all of this is done, it’s time to set up your gradient. Be sure that you have selected the repeating gradient tool which is the fourth icon to the right as pictured above.

STEP 2

Apply

Target where you would like the focal point to be on your finished photo. Normally, a nice point would be around halfway between the top and bottom, but every photograph is different. Click and hold at that point. Now drag the line of the tool upwards towards the top of your photo, release somewhere near the edge. You don’t have to make a perfect line upwards, perhaps your photo would benefit from a slightly tilted focus. Once you’ve done this, your photo should look somewhat like the photo above.

STEP 3

Lens Blur

Press Q again to switch out of Quick Mask mode. You should now have an eliptical marquee box somewhere on your image, Dont click out of it.

Choose Filter ▸ Blur ▸ Lens Blur and bring up the Lens Blur filter pane. Use the hexagonal iris shape to control the shape of the virtual iris in the lens. Rotation controls the angle of the hexagon. It’s usually not a good idea to drop the value of the Threshold much below 250. Click OK to apply the effect, then clear your selection.

Step 4

Cutomize

Choose Image ▸ Adjustments ▸ Levels. Working with the level bars, bring up the contrast by sliding the right white arrow to the left until you’ve achieved a bright enough effect. Now you can add your own flair to your image by adjusting the saturation and photo filters.

Have fun, add this effect to travel albums and photo collages. Keep in mind that model photographs are normally taken from above and generally have intense lighting.

Here are a couple more examples of how this effect plays out on different photographs:
