I know this blog is a little late, but it has taken me awhile to catch on to the online revolution. Here are some photos from the Gators’ trampling of Florida International, there were some big plays and interesting player selections by Meyer.

In my 30+ years in the systems industry, I have seen a lot of computer printers; everything from high speed line printers that print 132 characters per line to the early laser printers and plotters, to today’s consumer dot-matrix printers. I even have some of the original print wheels from the first high speed printer for the UNIVAC I. They’re over 50 years old and I’m sure they’re worth something, but I digress.

What bugs me though are today’s consumer printers which can be unusually inexpensive, so much so, the ink cartridges for them are almost as expensive as the whole printer, which turns the printers into disposable commodities. It’s no small wonder that our garbage dumps are filling up with printers as people change printers more frequently than years ago. This implies the real money is not in the printers themselves, but in the ink cartridges which bears a hefty price tag for replacements, be it new or recycled, which, to me, seems odd as ink should be relatively cheap. Then again, I suspect the manufacturers of such products probably have a better grasp of marketing than I do. As a consumer though, I object to paying $25 – $35 for a lousy little black ink cartridge which lasts no more than a month, and much more for color.

I generally don’t have much of a problem installing printers, then again, I have a bit more experience than most people. To the novice consumer though, installing a printer can be a very traumatic experience, primarily because the software is designed by programmer geeks who haven’t got a clue what “user friendly” means. Some of the common mistakes I’ve seen include:

• Installing a cartridge without first removing the tiny plastic strip under it.
• Trying to insert the cartridge backwards or upside-down.
• Inserting the black cartridge into the color cartridge position, and vice versa.
• Plugging the printer cables into the wrong sockets.
• For Wi-Fi printers, trying to get them to communicate with your network. Better yet, if something crashes, reestablishing the connection can be a painful experience, even for me.
• My personal favorite though is fighting with the printer to get the cartridges to reveal themselves in order to change them. You know, watching the cartridges as they zip from side-to-side in the printer thereby keeping them out of the person’s reach, kind of like a game of Tag.

Then there are the printers that talk to you, such as “Printing started” and “Printing complete.” Then it begins to get insolent with you when something goes awry, “Please fill paper in the auto sheet feeder” or “Your ink is low, time to replace the cartridge.” These statements are all based on small sound bites that are assembled and broadcast as required. Interestingly, one of my computers suffered a crash which distorted the sequence of the sound bites. Now I get things like, “Problem started” and “Please fill your ink in the auto sheet feeder and replace the cartridge with paper.” Frankly, if I’m going to be insulted in this manner, they could at least do it with a sexy voice.

The geeks may think this is funny. The rest of us do not.

One hundred years ago in November 1909, the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland presented its 1000th free organ recital.  Yes, that’s the correct number of zeroes.  Starting in 1895, when the library and the music hall were built, a series of organ recitals was begun.  By 1909, they had reached one thousand.

From November 6, 1895 to June 30, 1901, Frederic Archer (1838-1901) gave a whopping 451 organ recitals or lectures.  His successor Edwin Lemare gave 170, from March 1, 1902 to January 24, 1905.  Then, starting on October 5, 1907, Charles Heinroth gave 164, including the 1000th on November 13, 1909.  The rest of the thousand were presented by guest organists.

It sounds like some sort of stunt for the record books, but really it was and still is just part of Pittsburgh’s musical life.

For instance, on February 11, 1890, a series of organ recitals was begun in the city of Allegheny (now Pittsburgh’s North Side) at their Carnegie Music Hall.  They reached their 1000th recital on February 8, 1914, their 2000th on January 1st, 1939, and their 3000th on May 14, 1967.

Andrew Carnegie built libraries with music halls.  Then he gave them organs.  According to a May 1967 article in American Organist, the organ in the North Side Carnegie Music Hall was one of  “more than 7,000 organs given by Andrew Carnegie (in whole or in part) to a variety of religious, educational and civic institutions all over the world.”

Today, even though there are no longer functioning organs in the Oakland or North Side Carnegie music halls, Pittsburgh has plenty of renowned church organs being played by top-notch organists.  You can find them through the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and their Organ Artists Series.

Next year, the eyes of the organ world will be on Pittsburgh as the Organ Historical Society National Convention will be here from June 21-26, 2010.

And, always, the library has lots of organ resources, both historical and current, for your research, exploration or performances.

So I’m back …and I’m back with terribly exciting tales!

Lol but not really.

For the last couple of months, I’ve been working and settling into my new apartment with Tim and Olivia.

God it was the best thing I’ve ever done!

The day I moved out Sophie was out shopping, so I packed everything up, brought them down to the giant taxi I’d ordered and just as I grabbed the last bag from the sitting room, in she walked.

Noticing that nearly everything in the apartment was missing (she’s very observant) she said, “Uhm what’s going on?”

“Oh nothing much,” I replied, shrugging my shoulders. “I’m just moving out.”

Her mouth dropped open.

I’ve never seen that happen in real life before.

“Yeah, so here you go,” I said, with a smug smile, and dropped my keys into her hand. “Enjoy.”

“Eh no, you can’t just move out and take all the stuff,” she shrieked at me. “That’s stealing.”

Oh mother of God, after living with me for a month, she’s only realising that it was me providing all the crockery and the TV and whatnot.

“It’s not stealing when all the stuff belonged to me,” I said.

“Omg, no you have no right. Once you bring them into the apartment, they become the property of all the tenants,” she said folding her arms.

I turned around.

“Wait, you knew you were using my stuff the whole time? You didn’t think it came with the apartment?” I asked, shocked. “So when you were using all my stuff and not cleaning it or even sharing it, you knew it was mine and just thought it was your right and privilage?”

“I pay rent,” she said.

“Actually your parents pay rent,” I spat. “I also pay rent AND I put MY money into all the stuff you’ve just used ….oh and broken and not replaced.”

“I live here,” she pouted.

“Yeah well now you live here alone, so we’ll see how you get on without my stuff,” I said. “Oh and are you a complete idiot, Sophie? We lived together, we weren’t married, so how the hell do you have joint ownership of each others’ stuff!?”

“You’re so sad,” she shot back. “You’re just jealous because I’m way hotter than you, and boys don’t even ACKNOWLEDGE you. You’re desperate and such a loser! This is just because you’re sulking over the guy next door!”

I looked at her.

“You’re a pathetic,” I said, looking her straight in the eye. “And yes, you’re right, I am a loser …but not because I’m not attractive. I’m a loser for ever thinking you were a friend or worth my friendship and loyalty.”

And with that, I walked out the door.

Man that felt good.

I tried to be her friend, I really did.

But I was kidding myself.

I was just flattered that someone as pretty and popular as her took an interest in me, and ignored the fact that it was because I was the Fat-n-Ugly Friend that made her look good, and was the loyal dog she could kick around without worrying I’d leave her.

Skipping down the steps, with a smile on my face due to my new-found backbone, I bumped into Hot Boy Next Door ….well Ex-Hot Boy Next Door.

“Uhm hi,” he said eyeing the bag in my hand. “Going somewhere?”

Standing up straight and lifting my chin haughtily, I replied, “Yes, to my new apartment”.

He looked shocked. “You’re moving?”

“Yes I am,” I said. “I’ve outgrown this place ….and its people,” and with that I walked down the stairs, out of the building and away from the old me….

Enjoying the Chaos. This theme reflects the essence of what we’ve stated in our Mission and Vision – playfulness and entertainment in the midst of the chaos that’s out there. In this post we’ll try to convey our thoughts and decisions.

Considerations regarding the theme

We started with brainstorming on means to get people engaged or to draw their attention. The result was a list that consisted, for the main part, of activities involving media usage on an elementary level. Some examples include organizing a performance festival, placing door-to-door graffiti train carriages throughout the center, and putting up an art wall.

At first we weren’t quite sure how to implement several media to serve the goal of entertaining the community. We were mainly concerned with how we could get the community to engage in anything that we would construct.

After we had allowed to let new inspirations and ideas to sink in it dawned on us that we should focus on sorting out the chaos for a particular group that needs the sorting out, by informing them and consoling them that the chaos is alright to put up with, provided that we present them with communications they could yield support from and that would keep them absorbed. In this perspective, enjoying the chaos becomes being enthralled by the changes that are at hand. This is going to be the story we want to tell.

Reflection regarding our target group

While we were considering this, we reckoned that one of our potential target groups particularly stood out in needing help to get around in the chaos: the new student arrivals. We decided to go with this group for the project.

We addressed this decision in the blog post Deciding on target groups:

“The main consideration we’ve come up with here is how we can make the Spoorzone more attractive to New Students, and to provide them with easy directions or hassle-free smooth transition from Spoorzone to their accomodation or the university of Delft. There will be a large interaction between the TU Delft website and the applications we’ll present them with.”

We’ve written personas to envision in what situations the new students will be when they arrive in Delft. Where are they from? What are their personalities like? What are their quirks, characteristics, wishes? What will they worry about? In writing our briefing we’ve shifted the emphasis on the stories behind the people that make up our target group, instead of dealing with the fun activities that we were conceiving when we first started out.

In this post we show what target groups we considered, each with their pros and cons.

Potential Target Groups:

New Students

+easy to reach, use lots of different media

What experiences could we provide each potential target group with?

Narrowed choices down to a few groups and noted a few possible “experiences”:

New students

Make spoorzone more attractive, provide them with directions.

Provide parents with a feeling of security while traveling through Spoorzone and provide children with entertainment.

High school students

Provide them with some kind of eating facility.

Graffiti Artists

Provide them with a canvas to create artwork together with other artists.

Decision

Finally, we decided to go with Potential Target Group no. 1: New Students (through a democratic voting)

The main consideration we’ve come up with here is how we can make the Spoorzone more attractive to New Students, and to provide them with easy directions or hassle-free smooth transition from Spoorzone to their accomodation or the university (of Delft). There will be a large interaction between the TU Delft website and the plethora of apps we’ll present them with.

Some activities around the Spoorzone could help to make the New Students interact. More (and better) on these issues are addressed in the post Identity & Target Group.

Identity

Concerning our mission to create fun, it may be appropriate to use a party style appearance or theme. We have considered a number of target groups summarised below:

• New student arrivals
• parents of elementary school children
• high school students
• public transportation commuters
• graffiti artists
• car users needing parking spaces near the station
• tourists (older people and internationals)
• future residents of the new houses

Other groups that we may collaborate with are:

• STIP (student political party)
• tourist information centre
• museums
• store owners
• OWEE

Some moods people should be able to experience with our identity are:

• Fun/playful
• lively
• jocular but professional
• active
• entertaining
• comforting

Nemesea – Threefold Law

Vanochtend bedachten Tim & ik dit fantastische verhaal. Oké, eigenlijk bedacht ik het. En lachte Tim me uit. Het is zeer geschikt voor kinderen van 6 tot 12 jaar. Met een veel spanning en sensatie, de nodige educatieve verantwoordheid en een hartverwarmende moraal. Speciaal voor tijdens de feestdagen!

Broodbeleg in gevaar

Er was eens een pinguïn die Marmelade heette. Marmelade was een lieve, pluizige puberpinguïn, die op avontuur wilde. Hij besloot naar Peru te gaan, om zijn medepinguïngenoten op te zoeken. Want geloof het of niet, aan de Peruaanse kusten dobberen heel wat tropische pinguïns rond. Na de Peruaanse kusten reisde hij af naar het zuidelijkste puntje van Zuid-Amerika: Ushuaia. Marmelade wist toevallig dat Margje een mok met “Fin del mundo e fin el milenio!” had. Of was dat nou Franka? Marmelade wist het niet meer zeker.

In de wateren rond Ushuaia ging Marmelade op zoek naar kleine waterbeestjes. Hij at een waterbeestje op dat Chocopasta heette. Daarna had hij nog steeds honger en at hij een visje dat Pindakaas heette. Chocopasta en Pindakaas waren niet zo blij, maar Marmelade wel, die had een vol buikje. Hij wilde op de kust een dutje gaan doen, toen er opeens…

een hele hongerige orka met scherpe tanden langszwom! Dit was geen Free-Willy-knuffel-orka, maar een bloeddorstig monster, dat Bloedworst heette. In vroegere tijden noemde hij zichzelf Cervelaatworst, maar nadat Tim dat af had gekeurd, werd hij Bloedworst genoemd. Het zou Bloedworst worst wezen. Hij had honger en hij wilde een pinguïn eten. Gelukkig zag hij Marmelade, die hij in één grote orka-hap opat.

Marmelade schrok vreselijk! Hij was in al zijn lieve pluizigheid zomaar opgegeten door een orka! Zelfs Chocopasta en Pindakaas voelden in de buik van Marmelade de negatieve orka-vibraties in de orkabuik. Ze voelden zich net als toen Jona in de walvis zat en begonnen om de tijd te doden maar te neuriën.

Maar toen! Waren daar opeens marien biologen dr. prof. ir. dhr. Tim en dr. prof. ir. mevr. Margje. Dr. prof. ir. mevr. Margje schoot een harpoen op Bloedworst af en door haar superieure richtingsvermogen ving ze Bloedworst meteen, die daarna niet lang meer hoefde te lijden. Dr. prof. ir. dhr. Tim sneed zijn buik met chirurgische precisie open. Daar sprong Marmelade al meteen uit de orkabuik! Dr. prof. ir. mevr. Margje zorgde ervoor dat Marmelade Chocopasta en Pindakaas weer vrijliet uit zijn pinguïnbuikje en legde hem de principes van vegetariër zijn uit. Chocopasta en Pindakaas luisterden ook aandachtig mee.

Ondertussen tam-tamde dr. prof. ir. dhr. Tim Harry Potter Harry Potter. Harry Potter Harry Potter Verschijnselde prompt op de orka-buik, met zijn toverstok in zijn hand.  “Sectumsempra!” riep HP HP (voor intimici) en ZWOOF! daar was de orka-buik weer heel. “Expelliarmus!” riep HP HP en plots was Bloedworst weer een levende orka. Hij spartelde weer in het water, terwijl HP HP zich klaar maakte voor een extreem moeilijke spreuk. Ten slotte riep hij: “Expecto Patronum!”

Dr. prof. ir. dhr. Tim en dr. prof. ir. mevr. Margje wisten door al hun marien biologenkennis dat Bloedworst vanaf nu een spijsvertering had die ingesteld was op het eten van plastic dat de asociale mensheid in zee had gedumpt. Zo hoefden de arme albatrosbabyvogeltjes niet meer dood te gaan aan vergiftiging en ondervoeding, doordat hun ouders hen met alle goede bedoelingen plastic hadden gevoerd. Ook wisten ze dat de restanten van Bloedworsts spijsvertering (want orka’s poepen ook) getransformeerd zouden worden in biologisch-idiotisch afbreekbare stoffen, die het zeeklimaat zeer goed zouden doen. Daardoor zouden er veel kleine Chocopastaatjes en Pindakaasjes geboren kunnen worden, waardoor na alle overbevissing het visniveau weer op peil zou kunnen komen. Ook zouden de koraalriffen weer rijkelijk aangroeien door deze stoffen.

Dr. prof. ir. dhr. Tim en dr. prof. ir. mevr. Margje waren heel blij met HP HP’s spreukenwerk. Ze bedankten hem hartelijk en zeiden dat ze zijn nieuwe bril erg hip vonden. Ook nodigden ze hem uit om eens een Boterbiertje met hen te gaan drinken. Daarna Verdwijnselde HP HP weer, want hij had het heel druk met De Jongen Die Bleef Leven zijn. Dr. prof. ir. dhr Tim en dr. prof. ir. mevr. Margje zwaaiden Bloedworst, Chocopasta, Pindakaas en Marmelade in het licht van de ondergaande zon uit. Marmelade draaide zich nog even om en riep: “Morgen ga ik vegetarische rookworst eten!”

“How are you?” is a greeting we’ve been using for a long time and has spawned several mutations, such as the famous, “How ya doin?” The response is usually something like, “Fine, thank you.” Over the years though, we’ve changed our response to indicate elation, such as “Great!”, “Fabulous!”, “Super!”, “Wonderful!”, etc., or to denote depression, such as “Lousy,” “Horrible,” or “I could kill someone!”

You can learn a lot about someone simply by how they answer the question and govern yourself accordingly. I used to hear a lot of people say things were “Terrific” or other such positive exclamations, but I haven’t heard it in awhile. Instead, I tend to hear more negative responses which I interpret as a sign of the times.

I used to know a guy who thought everything was “Super!” and appeared to be very upbeat. Time and again, you can count on him saying everything was “Super!” He was quite a salesman. He moved out of our area years ago and I understand he did quite well for himself in land development. Then the recession came along which clobbered his company into bankruptcy. This snowballed into losing his house, his family, everything. Last I heard, he was sitting in jail somewhere. All his bravado had come crashing down on him. He may have been a positive type of guy, but he didn’t know how to manage his business and overextended himself.

Shortly after learning of this story, I bumped into another friend and when I asked how she was, she looked directly at me and replied, “I’m okay.” Simple, yet sincere. I smiled as I knew it was more of an honest appraisal of her condition than the other guy who said everything was unquestioningly “Super!”

Some people might think the response, “Okay,” as a mediocre answer, if not rather negative. I tend to see it more as a sign of candor and honesty. I would much rather hear a person say they are “Okay” rather than “Super!” any day of the week. As a matter of fact, anyone saying they’re “Great” I tend to treat suspiciously these days. To me, “Okay” is positive, everything else is negative.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to respond to, “Wha’zup?”

Such is my Pet Peeve of the Week.

O Google oficializou nesta quinta-feira (19/11) o sistema operacional Chrome OS, se posicionando como rival tanto do Windows, da Microsoft, como de distribuições Linux no crescente mercado de pequenos computadores portáteis, chamados também de netbooks.
