I know that there are lots of media centers that connect your computer and your media collection to your TV but I think that the best one out there at the moment is Apple TV. Why I here you ask?

Well, the reason why it is the best is the way that it works, the connectivity between iTunes and Apple TV. Then you can also count in the Time Machine back up system, I now have my iTunes library on Apple TV and back up on my Time Capsule, and that is why Apple make some of the best equipment in the world.

Well my Apple time Capsule has eventually reached the limits of it’s 500GB disc space – or more correctly 497.96GB – Formatted free disk space.
It has survived this long with back-ups going as far back in time as 7th June 2009 so can’t complain I suppose.
Can’t really ‘foil’ upgrading and replacing with a 2TB version, for I can think of more useful things to spend my cash on.

So worth noting that this is an event that I knew would be coming but still alas I feel rather disquieted that ‘older’ backups will now be erased to make room for the newer ones, suppose it’s like life really out with the ‘old’ and in with the ‘new’.

Jippi!

Lykke!

You are invited to contribute–artifacts, written materials, contest entries, and/or clever ide

You are invited to contribute–artifacts, written materials, contest entries, and/or clever ideas–to a new “UNO of the Future” Centennial Time Capsule for the entire University of Nebraska at Omaha community. Each of seven supporting groups will have its own container: one for students (12×12x48″), and six others (12×12x24″) for faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and two community groups (donors/contributors and schools/partners). A public “last glimpse” of all contents will be on display in the Criss Library in February 2010, until the 100-year placement in March 2010.

Unlike most time capsules that are designed to capture–and preserve–significant aspects of the present time and culture, this effort is intended to encourage participants and supporters to speak directly to members of the University and the Omaha community in 2109-2110. It will be a way for individuals of our community to leave a legacy of thought as they look ahead to the future. The focus will be on the community (and its education, environment, businesses, culture, media, philosophies, and toys) in 2110–as we envision it, and have hopes for it, today.

Of course, we do not expect the Centennial Time Capsule project to be solely serious in tone or approach. For example, we are featuring a contest, soliciting ideas for items that are $20 or less now but are predicted to have a high monetary value in 2110. For each constituent group, the 2110 Committee will select three of the nominated items; those items will be purchased and on display at the Criss Library in February. Anyone who attends the exhibit will be encouraged to vote for the items (one per group) that he or she thinks will have the highest monetary value in 2110; comments and rationale will also be captured in a variety of media. At the appropriate time, all items will be enclosed in their respective capsules, along with information about the person who submitted the idea and which items won.

There have been other attempts at time capsule projects on the UNO campus, but almost all of the previous capsules have been buried underground. Contents of those already opened deteriorated significantly or were ruined because of water seepage into the capsule. The 2110 containers will be different. They will be made of heavy steel, sealed and welded to be airtight, filled with nitrogen to reduce oxygen deterioration, and placed above ground in an interior wall of the newly constructed Mammel Hall. Other measures are being taken to ensure proper archival quality of the contents. All materials should therefore be in excellent condition when viewed during UNO’s bicentennial year.

You are encouraged to submit items and/or writings to enclose in the capsule–and post comments and suggestions on this blog page, which will be replicated in one of the capsules. We request submissions no later than January 15, 2010, so the 2110 Committee can organize the materials prior to the Criss Library display. Watch for details!

Add contest ideas to this blog or e-mail me at ssollars@unomaha.edu

We’re also on Facebook. Search for “University of Nebraska at Omaha 2110 Time Capsule.”

Send items or writings to Suzanne Sollars, 419 Allwine Hall, UNO, Omaha, NE 68182 (e-mail me to arrange drop-off of items, if local). Make sure to include your e-mail address, autobiographical information you would like to include in the capsule and identify your capsule group (student, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, community – donors/supporters or community – schools and partners).

GUIDELINES FOR ITEMS AND WRITINGS:

Total size of each capsule is 12×12x24” (student capsule is 12×12x48″) so the items must be small; several other items will be included in the capsules. Items should follow the overall capsule theme of “forward-looking” NOT simply archival. You can include autobiographical information (about yourself and/or your business; no more than 1 type-written page) to include with the item you submit.
Best types of items to donate:
1) One-of-a-kind (rare)
2) Things that people in 2110 may not see in pristine condition otherwise (things we use frequently yet tend to throw away and it would be unlikely someone [not even a manufacturer, business or museum] would have saved).
3) Toys, novelty items, things that show the humor of our generation.
4) Folk art
5) Items that will likely have changed substantially because of technological advances, but are items people are not likely to save.
6) Items specific to UNO (or community partners) that might not otherwise be passed along.
Items not best:
1) Electronic media (tends to degrade and it is not readily accessible for viewing)
2) Photographs (these tend to remain archived already)
3) Items with any type of fluid material (i.e. all should be dry metal/plastic/glass/rock/wood/paper, etc)
Letters or papers:
1) Full submission (including author information and bibliography/reference) limit is 8 pages.
2) Author information, not to exceed one paragraph, should be included on first page. Please do not use a separate page for this introduction.
3) No smaller than 10 pt font and single-sided, may be single or double-spaced.
4) The submitted copy should be handled as minimally as possible.
5) Do NOT paper clip or staple the papers.
6) Submitted papers will be best preserved if printed on archival paper or the highest quality paper available.
7) High quality images may be included, but use archival quality and procedures for image preservation

All submissions need to be received by Jan 15, 2010. Earlier submissions appreciated and will have a better chance of ensuring their inclusion in the capsule. Send to Suzanne Sollars, 419 Allwine Hall, UNO, Omaha, NE, 68182. Please follow-up with an e-mail to ssollars@unomaha.edu to let her know the submissions were sent.
Mark your submissions as Student, Faculty, Staff, Administration, Alumni, Community – donors/supporters or Community – schools/partners.

CONTEST:

The UNO Project 2110 Time Capsule committee is having a contest to select items to include in its time capsule that may be very valuable to those who open the capsule in 100 years. What one item costing $20 or less do you think will have the highest monetary value in 2110? In other words, what is an item that is inexpensive now that will be monetarily valuable in 100 years?

Contest Guidelines:
1) The item must be small (total capsule area is 12×12x24” and several other items will be in there).
2) The item must be able to be purchased locally.
3) All you need to do is submit the item idea. You do not need to purchase it (although you may), but please submit the location it can be purchased.
4) Submit your name and contact information (preferably e-mail address).
5) For each constituent group (students, staff, faculty, etc.), the 2110 Committee will select three item ideas. Those items will be the only ones purchased.
6) In February 2010, there will be a display in the Criss Library of all capsule items. The three submissions from each constituent group will also be on display. Anyone who visits the library exhibit can vote on the one contest item from each constituent group that they think will have the highest monetary value in 2110.
7) The results of the contest, all three items and autobiographical information about the individuals who submitted the items will be included in the capsule.

Mark your submissions as Student, Faculty, Staff, Administration, Alumni, Community – donors/supporters or Community – schools/partners. Submit contest suggestions on this blog as a comment OR Email to ssollars@unomaha.edu with subject line: 2110 Contest Item.
Be sure to include your name and contact information.
Deadline for submissions will be January 5, 2010.

My wife recently replaced her Thinkpad T40 with a MacBook Pro (MBP). To save me time in the future,

My wife recently replaced her Thinkpad T40 with a MacBook Pro (MBP). To save me time in the future, when a crash or data loss occurs, I decided to get Time Machine and SuperDuper! set up on a Western Digital Passport USB drive (I love those passport drives!). The problem with this setup was that it relied on her plugging in the USB drive into the MBP on a regular schedule. The solution was to set up some network attached storage (NAS) on our home network.

I quickly settled on two options. Apple’s 1TB Time Capsule or a combination of a Western Digital MyBook World Edition (MBWE) and Linksys Gigabit N. In terms of backup, storage and network connectivity, the MBWE plus Linksys router provided equivalent function to Time Capsule.

What to do?

Time Capsule was $30 cheaper than the MBWE plus Linksys router option. However, since MBWE is running a Linux kernel, the ability to add functionality to the device was almost limitless. There’s a strong community of MBWE users that have everything from BitTorrent clients, to PHP, to a PBX running on MBWE devices. Even out of the box, the MBWE provided more functionality than Time Capsule, such as a Media Server. These “extra” features that the MBWE provides out of the box versus Time Capsule were not features I’d originally considered part of the purchase decision. But when I learned about them, I tried to figure out if I could add these to capabilities to Time Capsule. While Time Capsule runs a stripped down FreeBSD, it seems that the code is loaded onto a chip and is not modifiable.

While both Time Capsule and MBWE are built off an open source kernel, the user freedom afforded by the two products are vastly different. Time Capsule is not meant to be tinkered with. MBWE is arguably not meant to be tinkered with either, but Western Digital knows that their customers are doing so, and is making it easier to get more out of the device than the functions the device ships with. For instance, the old version of MBWE did not support SSH access to the device out of the box. But since that was the first thing that MBWE users built a hack for, Western Digital smartly responded by adding this function in the new version of the device.

I struggled with the choice. Using Time Capsule meant that Time Capsule and SuperDuper! just worked with the MBP. On the other hand, there were a few system tweaks I’d have to make to get Time Capsule and SuperDuper! working with the MBWE and the MBP.

In the end, I went with the MBWE solution over Time Capsule. I liked the extra function and ability to add yet more by choosing MBWE over Time Capsule. To me, the freedom, in open source terms, that MBWE delivered was well worth the extra cost and effort to set up.

What do you think? Good choice?

An expert assures me that this is a '56 Nash Rambler. But I have to say it looks more like a '55 to me.

It’s a box, or a drawer, or a trunk. We all have a place that we put things we deem too important to throw away, but too useless to leave in the open. These choices make perfect sense at the time, and we could explain why we kept the eraser shaped like a piece of sushi or that invitation to a party long past. Soon the meaningful things jostle with the mundane things, the paperclips, stamps, the pennies. And the meaningful and mundane things get tangled and stuck to the inexplicable things.

Passing by my favorite weekly garage sale (many of them are like semi-permanent thrift stores in our neighborhood) I noticed this box. I had a feeling it was good just from the unicorn stamped on the faux leather covering.

Even if it had been empty, this was well worth two bucks.

An unusual box–something I can use anyway. And inside, the odds and ends of some strange woman’s life from the mid 1950s through the 70s.

And my first thought was, Wow, what a freaky lady. Among the frugally saved bits of yarn, seam liners wrapped around a 1955 pocket calendar and the invitation to a shoe sale, there was a LAPD sponsored pamphlet called “Rape! Lady Beware” and a wedge of plastic cheese. A picture of a young boy with this inscription, “From a smart brother, to a dumb sister.” And my favorite, a beautiful slide of what I take to be the woman and her husband in a red and white ‘56 Rambler. Big fins, red and white. In the background you can see a classic example of 50s So Cal architecture, flat, square and modern.

Spools, strawberry, Necchi book, buttons, thread box, bobbins, fake fall leaves

It all seemed so random at first, but when I think about how odd the contents of some of my own drawers are, I started trying to assemble a mental portrait of this person. Let’s see, Necchi sewing machine, manual and bobbins. Why not a Singer? She was thrifty—the smallest ends of thread were carefully wrapped up on their original cards. A Catholic…there’s a St.Christopher medal. There’s an invitation to a shoe sale at May Co. downtown at Broadway and 8th…back when there were still big department stores downtown, instead of out in the suburban malls. Her brother’s picture, with the funny inscription in terrible handwriting. I googled the address on the shoe invitation and zoomed in to see the street view. A nondescript bungalow in Redwood city…not the midcentury house from the slide, and no sign of the badass finned car. Not sure what to make of the scary rape brochure, or the plastic cheese and matching mouse. It’s just funny how much I do know just from this random set of objects that she set aside, for neither use or disposal. I know where she lived, where she shopped, even her name. I have a sense of what she privately felt was important to keep, things she never thought about anyone seeing. When I think about someone going through the analogous box from my life, it feels very wrong, invasive.

I love the little needle folio...it features a woman holding her needle triumphantly aloft, the envy of her girlfriends.

So, in repayment, for letting me spy on her, I’ll do my best to use the useful things. The needles and bobbins are in great condition, and I’m sure someone out there is looking for that Necchi manual. I hope she enjoyed herself in the Nash, and that she managed to stay safe with the help of the rather lurid LAPD instructions.

The backup disk image “…..sparsebundle” could not be created (error 45)).

Because I like structure, I’ve decided to keep to a more regular schedule with this blog. Wednesday is now officially Time Capsule Day–wherein I go back to one of my many old blogs and see what I was doing On This Day several years ago. Today’s entry comes from 2006 and features many things still evident in my writing today: quotes, brattiness and documented insecurity. Get nuts.

…

artists and scientists – placebo – ugly alle

Current mood: madonna

overheard at art and science on friday:

“the short layers make your hair look longer.”
“that’s the dumbest thing i’ve ever heard–oh my god, you’re right!”

“so for halloween, i didn’t really have a costume. so i just wore this really cute black outfit with pinstripes, did my eyeliner all cool–it took me an hour, but i did it–and wore this great red lipstick. and then i was talking to (mutual ex-boyfriend) and i told him what i wore, and he’s all ”so you went as alle?” and…i guess i unintentionally dressed up as you.”
“you accidentally dressed up as me for halloween? and (ex) identified this?”
“yes.”
“i’ve never felt so flattered and creeped-out at the same time.”

“let’s change our myspace statuses to married to keep the weirdies away.”
“okay. we’ll protect each other.”
“okay. you’re my wife now.”
“okay. we’re wives.”
…
“you realise this is BY FAR the most functional relationship either one of us has ever been in?”
“sure is.”

christin does not just provide hilarious anecdotes to relate in blogs, she also does really good hair! so if anyone is reading this and realising they need their hairs cutted, i suggest looking up the art and science salon in lincoln park (halsted and armitage) and making an appointment with her. she is an excellent girl and an excellent stylist–you will love your hair afterwards, guaranteed.

placebo on friday night was EXCELLENT. i can’t tell you how long it’s been since i’ve enjoyed myself at a show that much. it was exactly what i needed; a night out with cool people and great music. she wants revenge was pretty underwhelming, but since i only have a passing interest in their music it was no big deal (loved the lights, though). but placebo–oh, brian molko, love of my life. they played lots of stuff from the new album, which is actually very good, but still–when they played “every me, every you” my inner fifteen-year-old lost her mind. if there had been an encore, i would have been happier because the set seemed way too short without it, but whatever. LOVE.

last night was sara’s apartment warming. there were so many people, i could hardly move. thank god for rob, who stood around with me, defused panic attacks and avoided conversation with “strangers.” (loves you, pope.) sadly, that wasn’t enough to save me from ending the night feeling totally awful about myself. no matter what men say about appreciating intelligence and non-skank-girls, as soon as an underfed whore with a fake tan sticks her chest out, it’s all over for the aforementioned girls (like me). i’ve never felt more unattractive in my life. maybe if i wore too tight cheaply made low-cut everything a la vapid tramp, rather than completely covering everything below the neck in clothes too big for me a la elderly muslim woman, i’d be more valued. whatever. at this point, i’m sick of being told how clever and above my peers i am. i just want to be told that i’m fucking pretty. okay? that’s really all i want right now. to feel like i’m beautiful just as i am.

yuck. insecurity leaves a bad taste in my mouth. i’ll be better tommorrow.

…

First, let’s talk about the quotes and the girl that they come from. I’ve written about Christin before but never by name; we became friends after a boy kind of screwed me over and picked up with her. The boy in question is referred to as “Mutual ex-boyfriend,” and the same dude that I randomly ran into in my neighbourhood recently. Oy. Awkward.

Christin was cutting my hair back in 2006 because I’d agreed to be her model for her big important hairshow. She really had her work cut out for her; my hair had recently gone from black to white to red to white to dark blonde, and was TOTALLY fried. I ended up with a really cute shorter cut, which bought me another month before I decided that my mop was beyond help and lopped it totally off. It occurs to me as I’m writing this that I’m in dire need of another haircut now, actually. Time to holla at mah girl!

Second, Placebo. The backstory on this was that my friend Natalie won tickets to see Placebo when we were about fourteen. She asked me to go with her but my Mum wouldn’t let me, citing the fact that I wasn’t mature enough to go to a concert unsupervised. Looking back she was totally right, but at the time? I was PISSED. So when my friend Beth scored Placebo tickets in 2006, inner-fourteen-year-old-Alle was PSYCHED. I actually called Mum to snottily let her know that I was going to see them and she couldn’t stop me; she was all “Um, you’re 22. Go for it.”

Third, the insecurity. This entry was written in the midst of my mid-life crisis. It was starting to dawn on me that I’d never, ever be the right size or shape to continue modelling, I felt like a failure all the time because of it and as a result I HATED my body. At the time of writing I weighed about 117 pounds, which is plenty thin for someone who is 5′10″, but I was about to make a last insane effort to shrink down to a size zero. The end result? 107 pounds, no boobs, hair loss, and an epic starvation-related tantrum in Spanish class. Anyway, the point is that I was feeling terrible about myself at the time of writing. At Sara’s party, as reported, there were plenty of girls with big fake boobs, turning the heads of every dude they met. Then there was me; emaciated and dressed like a homeless man, lurking in the corner and hating life. I really shouldn’t have ripped on the other girls for being underfed; I was barely eating at all back then & would have KILLED to be even underfed.

I mention that I wanted to be told that I was pretty. I did. The thing about modelling–I feel like this might turn into a post all of its own, but I think this point needs to be made here and now–is that people will make very personal comments about your appearance all the time. Too old, too fat, too short. Your hips are too big, your shoulders are uneven, I don’t like your jawline. Whatever. You’re not meant to let them get to you, but hey, you’re human and THEY DO. I was so tired of it & I just wanted to feel appreciated on a physical level. Although even if a boy DID try to physically appreciate me, my self-loathing was so intense that you could forget me getting naked, at all, for anyone, period. I felt like a gelatinous blob of pure fat; honesty now compels me to say that I looked more like a sack of antlers than anything else.

I eventually quit modelling and started eating again. My hair grew back and I got my period again for the first time in a couple of years. I got back into therapy for my life-long body image issues and I got over thinking that I was worthless if I couldn’t fit into a size double-zero. I still dress a little like an “elderly musilm woman” although I’m a lot more comfortable showing off my body now than I was back then. But I no longer care if boys validate me by talking to me at parties, and I realise that being smart is a whole lot more important than being pretty. That’s personal growth. That’s beautiful.

Loves you!

Bueno Empecemos La Lista:

NUEVOS AIRPORT EXTREME Y TIME CAPSULE

Uutel seadmetel on parandatud juhtmevaba leviala 25% ja stabiilsust 50%.

Põhjuseks on uuendatud antenn mis võimaldab ka 60% kiiremaid Time Machine tagavarakoopiate tegemist.

Hinnad on samad kui eelnevalt.

Toodetega saab tutvuda Apple veebilehel!
