Stephen King mentioned that his new book, Under The Dome, might end up as an HBO miniseries.  Variety now has word that Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks TV have optioned the book and are looking to set it up as a mini series, likely for cable. Spielberg will executive produce. The story is set in a small vacation town in Maine which becomes covered by an invisible force field which causes the residents to fight for survival, in two warring factions.

Here is the official plot description from the book:

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as “the dome” comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when — or if — it will go away. Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens — town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing — even murder — to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just short. It’s running out.

Il concerto merita di essere visto oltre che per l’alta qualità musicale, per la grandiosità della messa in scena e per le geniali improvvisazioni.

Was macht eine gute “Gute-Nacht-Geschichte aus? Richtig, am Ende sollte wenn möglich der Zuhörer eingeschlafen sein. Da ich seit kurzem in regelmäßigen Abständen “Gute-Nacht-Geschichten” erzähle, muss ich feststellen, wie schwierig das für denjenigen, also mich, ist, wenn alle um mich herum einschlafen. Da ich mir die “Gute-Nacht-Geschichten” immer ausdenke, eine klare Missachtung meiner Gedanken.

Bisher erzählt habe ich folgende Geschichten: (Titel unsortiert und, glaube ich, unvollständig) Vom kleinen Bären, der sein Kopfkissen verloren hatte, Der Stein der von der Bergspitze losrollte, Das Reh, das auszog, einen Laden mit HeavyMetalMusic zu finden, Die Bauschewolke, die eine Regenwolke werden wollte.

After months and months of hard work slaving away as a producer, I finally get to come out and talk a bit about the music! If you didn’t know, one of the things that gives us our unique sound is the fact that we all listen to such drastically different things. As far as writing goes, Rebecca tends to write the lyrics while I come up with a good deal of the music and arrangements. These five bands are not only some of my favorites, but probably the five that you can hear the most of on the album:

Foo Fighters- In my opinion, the Foo Fighters are pretty much the center of modern pop rock. On top of releasing six major albums and winning a bunch of Grammys, I feel like they are one of those bands that has influenced a large percentage of modern bands, even if they don’t realize it. At first, they did seem like the expected off-shoot of Nirvana, but over time, they developed into their own, and took that grunge sound in a more refined, poppy direction. They were the first band that I really got into that wasn’t loud for the sake of being loud; they taught me that the melody is what is most important. Even since I heard “There Is Nothing Left To Lose” in 1999, they have been one of my favorite bands…so it makes sense that they’d be a big influence on my writing.

Stone Temple Pilots- Very possibly my favorite band. When I was a little kid, I used to wake up on Saturday mornings with my dad blasting “Core” throughout the house. The songs themselves are all great, but the big influence comes from my favorite guitarist: Dean DeLeo. His playing is very unique, and a lot of times, the sounds he uses are as much of what makes it good as the notes. I used a lot of STPesque sounds and jangly chords on the album, most notably in the song “Obsession”, as well as some very DeLeo inspired parts laid in from time to time, like the second guitar part in the bridge of “Bleed”.

Led Zeppelin- There would be no Stone Temple Pilots (or most rock bands after 1969) without Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page is a guitar god, as well as arguably the greatest producer of all time. His playing, his guitar tones, and everything he ever did in the studio influenced this album both directly and indirectly. But it was more than Page; Zeppelin is about as good of a band as there has ever been. They may not have been the tightest, most precise band in history, but they had a groove that only those four could have created. They also taught me that you didn’t need to be loud and fast to be heavy. It was about attitude. It was a discussion of the song “Achilles Last Stand” before the practice we first played “Hold On” that turned it into one of our favorite songs on this album; even though we didn’t notice the influence for a few weeks after that.

Muse- I liked Muse when I heard “Time Is Running Out” and “Hysteria”, but I didn’t realize they were really something special until I heard “Supermassive Black Hole”. The video for “Knights of Cydonia” really pushed them over the edge as one of my favorite bands, and later that year I was astounded when I saw them live at Madison Square Garden. They are able to be so big, and so epic while not losing the drive and aggression of the three-piece rock band that they are. Matt Bellamy is one of the only truly great musicians out there today. He takes inspiration from Tom Morello and Jimi Hendrix, and then combines it with the grandness of Queen without losing the edge. Without Muse, I’m not sure if we would have been willing to push songs like “Blind” as far as we did. The Muse-inspired “Hold On” also helped us break out of the 4-chord pop rock templates we were working in before and push the envelope a little more.

Billy Talent-One of the few artists that Rebecca and I both listen to. I saw them at the World Ski and Snowboard Festival at Whistler in 2003, and really thought nothing of the two-song demo I was handed. I liked those two songs (“Living in the Shadows” and “Prisoners of Today”), but never went on to listen to the band beyond that. When I went to orientation at Northeastern, the a booth for the campus radio station gave me a copy of Billy Talent II and was hooked as soon as I turned on “Devil in a Midnight Mass”. There is some pretty clear Billy Talent influence in certain songs (and of course their two vocalists), but in general I think we were trying to go for their type of clean, yet heavy power. And I’m sure I’ll only hear more Billy Talent come through as I hear the finished version of our album, because while recording, I was listening to them more than anyone else.

There are certainly other major influences (The Beatles, Queens of the Stone Age, The Hives etc.), but none had quite the same impact. I think we’ve done a good job at blending the old and the new, and I hope that you guys like what we put out there!

We all know Muse is back with their newest album called: The Resistance. But did you also know that they were forced to playback, swapped places as a payback and nobody on the show even noticed?

The singer became the drummer, the drummer became the singer and played bass; while the original bassist took the keyboard and the guitar. How is it even possible not to see the difference?

Even right after their so-called performance, the fake-singer was addressed as Matthew Bellamy himself and had to give his opinion about the drummer. Which, in this case, was Matthew Bellamy. Still following? Well, see for yourself. I only know that as an aspiring music-journalist, I’d never want to make a mistake like that. And with such a big band? Everyone knows Matthew, right?

The big news this week was, of course, the MTV VMAs. Once again, I’m so disappointed by all the mundane discussions: Lady Gaga wore crazy outfits…boring. Kanye said crazy things…yawn. So, let’s get to what people should be talking about like the music. First of all, Pink was amazing. She is a crazy, crazy girl for doing the trapeze while singing, but I’m not shocked this former gymnast chose acrobatics. Still, it was very impressive that she was moving in time with the song. Second, Lady Gaga’s voice was only overshadowed by her performance. People may think she was over the top, but I expect nothing less from this performance artist and art school drop out. She sounded amazing and, although I’m surprised they let her do the all the blood on television, she really sent a message about the price of fame. So all you out there, don’t get famous otherwise it will make you crazy a la Britney style until it sucks the life out of you. Third, what about Green Day? These guys won just as many awards as Beyonce and Lady Gaga, but no one is giving them any play. I remember when these guys first came out. They were young and came with numerous hijinx. Their music was awesome back then, but now their music is epic with a real vision. Lastly, Jay-Z… Please, I don’t even know where to start. I know he was probably only there because the VMAs were in New York (his old stomping grounds) and one of the Beastie Boys is in cancer treatments right now making them unavailable, but Jay-Z is the most overrated rapper ever. He was having a hard time spitting out those first couple verses in his performance. A good rapper can flow Mr. Z. Also, when is the last time he actually had a good track? I’m thinking in the late 90s. Everyone puts him on a pedestal because he’s got stock in everything and he’s the only guy who was around in the 90s that didn’t get shot, become a producer, or fade away. Wow, should I start the slow clap now?  Just because Jay-Z is a good entrepreneur doesn’t mean that he’s a good rapper, people. And now a new Band of the Week…Muse!

I have been listening to this British trio since 2003 when they released their third album Absolution. They are huge in Europe and I thought they were building a fan base  here in the states, but most people I talk to don’t know who Muse is. Let me tell you that you should get familiar. Although they have a new album The Resistance that just came out this last week, I recommend “Time is Running Out,” “Hysteria,” and my absolute favorite Muse track “Plug In Baby.”  Catch them live too. I was not able to see them until 2004 at Live 105’s Not So Silent Night in San Francisco. The line-up included The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and Modest Mouse, but Muse stole the show. I saw them again in 2005 when they headlined their own tour and they outdid themselves. They are the best live band (second only to Tool) that I’ve seen.

This was originally supposed to be just a response to a comment on another blog, but it turned into bit of an essay so I decided to turn it into a post in it’s own right.

Basically, the question is: Should bands play their hits at every gig?

I’m going to see Muse for the 2nd time on Friday, and would be quite happy to hear all of The Resistance and not hear Time Is Running Out, Feeling Good, New Born & Knights of Cydonia.

But maybe this would not be fair on new fans who want to hear their most famous songs.

I saw them before (for the 1st time) at Wembley Stadium, they played 9 songs off of Black Holes, plus everything you would expect them to play (I think), except Bliss. I kind of consider myself relatively new to Muse, having discovered them at the Time Is Running Out stage, meaning songs like Bliss are actually from before my time. But by the time I got round to going to a gig I had listened to their previous stuff and decided that my favourite songs weren’t necessarily the famous ones, and Time Is Running Out has become one of my least favoured, alongside Feeling Good.

I think the idea that bands should always play their hits definitely applies to festival sets, but when they’re doing a headline tour for an album, I expect the set to be dominated by new stuff.

Having said that, I would always expect any band to play some hits, and with Arctic Monkeys only on album #3, I am surprised they would leave out Scummy; while Muse, having been around a bit longer, have a few more hits, and I think can better afford to leave out some of their famous ones. I can’t really comment on Radiohead because I don’t know what they’re famous for. I know The Bends is my favourite of their albums, but I bought it (followed by all the others) based on a recommendation without having heard any of the songs before.

Personally I wouldn’t spend around £60 (that’s a Muse ticket plus train fare) to see a band if I only knew a couple of songs. If people can afford to do that, fair play to them, they’re probably used to getting what they want.

Probably more relevant is my first trip to see Red Hot Chili Peppers when I was a relatively new fan (at the time I owned By The Way, What Hits!? and Greatest Hits), I would have been disappointed on that occasion if they hadn’t played By The Way, The Zephyr Song, Can’t Stop, Under the Bridge & Give It Away. But then, that was the Greatest Hits tour, so it would’ve been a bit stupid of them not to play the popular ones. I would’ve loved pretty much any of the songs from By The Way, which was the first ever album by anyone that I bought, Venice Queen is still one of my all time favourite songs. (My memory’s not good enough to remember an entire set from 5 years ago, I looked it up here. I still find it pretty cool that I was at the gigs where RHCP’s Live in Hyde Park and Muse’s HAARP were recorded, and I saw James Brown live.)

When I saw them on the Stadium Arcadium tour I was actually a bit disappointed they only played 5 of the 28 songs from the new album.

Both times I would’ve loved to see a Flea trumpet solo (having spent 10 years of my school life learning to play the Cornet), and songs like Higher Ground, Knock Me Down and Taste The Pain. They have quite a large back catalogue though, so I’m prepared for the unlikeliness of my ideal setlist actually occurring.

I imagine I will go and see them again when they return (apparently they’re starting work on a new album in the next couple of weeks). Hopefully I’ll finally get to see a Trumpet solo, maybe Funky Monks, Higher Ground… Funny Face would be awesome. Meanwhile I would not be at all disappointed if they didn’t play Dani California, Under The Bridge or Give It Away, but then again, they mix up their songs with extended jams or by incorporating other songs into intros, so hearing the same songs need not be boring.

I wouldn’t want to hear too many covers at a gig, and a Nick Cave song wouldn’t have meant anything to me, but I do think it’s interesting to find out who a band is influenced by, and I’ve discovered a lot of great songs via Chili Peppers covers, from artists such as Jimi Hendrix, The Ramones, Stevie Wonder, Looking Glass, David Bowie, The Meters, Bob Dylan, Sly & The Family Stone, Simon & Garfunkel, Sweet, Cat Stevens, The Chantels, The Shangri-Las, Del Shannon, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, The Chirelles, The Beach Boys, George Clinton, Funkadelic, Iggy & The Stooges, Parliament, Jackson 5, Hank Williams, Fugazi, .45 Grave.

در زمان صدام حسين در عراق حال و روز رسانه ها مثل ايران  كنوني بود ولي

بعد از ورود شيطان بزرگ ( دام ظله و بركاته )!!!  اگر اشتباه نكنم تعداد كانالها از 50 تا هم گذشته است

و ده ها راديو فعاليت مي كنند

هر حزب كه چه عرض كنم هر خرده حزبي يك يا حتي چند رسانه دارد

شبكه هاي مذهبي هم آنقدر زياد شده اند كه به يك ماهواره اختصاصي نياز دارند

در لبنان 4 ميليوني دهها رسانه مختلف فعاليت مي كنند و همگي احزاب مهم راديو و تلويزيون مستقل دارند

حزب الله نور چشمي داراي كانال تلويزيوني المنار است ونيز راديو نور كه به دو صورت زميني و ماهواره اي و

البته در چندين ماهواره پخش مي شوند

ملت آواره فلسطين هم كه سابقا فقظ يك كانال الفلسطين را داشت اخيرا چندين كانال جديد مثل

الاقصي وابسته به حماس والقدس و تا حدود زيادي الحوار نيز به آن اضافه شده

در تركيه و پاكستان هم تمامي احزاب ارگان هاي رسانه اي مستقل دارند

حتي در افغانستان هم رسانه هاي منتقد دولت و مستقل موجود است

در مورد نظام هم كه خودتون بهتر مي دانيد

علاوه بر صداوسيماي داخلي منافق و لجن پراكن , چندين رسانه اعم از راديو و تلويزيون به چندين

زبان مختلف برنامه پخش ميكنند

العالم و PRESS TV  هم كه به بزك كردن چهره نظام مشغولند

خوب حالا چرا اكثريت ملت ايران حتي يك راديو هم ندارد ؟؟؟

دليش  كيه ‌؟؟؟‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌  چيه ؟؟؟

حاضرم قسم بخورم حداقل يك چهارم رسانه هايي كه در بالا ذكر كردم

يا مستقيما ويا با واسطه از جيب ما تغذيه مي شوند

تا كي بايد داد بزنيم

خيلي ها نوشته و مي نويسند و تذكر داده و مي دهند ولي

حيف كه گوش شنوايي نيست

بعد از اينكه رييس جمهور از تشكيل جنبش “ رسا “ خبر دادند

اميدوارم اولين قدم با تاسيس يك رسانه ( تلويزيوني و اگر نشد راديويي) محكم برداشته شود

So I have 5 days left to finish everything I need to have done for handing in my final major project. I’ve done my final images and my CV, but there’s so much left to do and it’s freaking me out a bit that we only have so little time left. But I know myself and I know I can do this, if I just stop freaking out.
