There was a man called Murphy who worked in a big organization as one of the salesmen among thousands who worked there. The organization demanded high work efficiency from its employees and unfortunately, the working hours were highly irregular and long.

One day one of the leaders, in whose team was Murphy, summoned some his men and women under him who were doing exceptionally well lately, to show an informal, personal laptop presentation of the latest development in a product line. Murphy was in the group.

Soon after this the leader was struggling to open the software, due to a glitch, in which the presentation was to be opened. Murphy went ahead calmly and solved the problem and the leader was astonished by his skill.

During the presentation, every often the leader would ask the mob whether there was any questions from them. Murphy stood out cleanly from the rest of the crowd with his professional acumen, that too for a man who joined the organization just 6 months back.

The leader, who was now flabbergasted asked Murphy to reveal the secret so that everyone could benefit. He happily disclosed his secret,

“I simply HAVE BEEN USING THAT LITTLE TIME I get during my traveling to listen to valuable sales related lessons in my ipod so as to improve my knowledge about my profession. Then I used that small amount of time I get at my home that’s left, after dedicating quality time with my family, to learn about computers. I have been using my laptop to impress and help my prospects with the product, to analyze my growth every month and to note things where I am going wrong during a sales presentation. I have also registered for a sales seminar conducted next month by one of the renowned experts in this field and all this in my spare time.”

The real “importance” of your spare time and how you could use it as a ladder are as follows in the next 2 parts!

It’s an inborn attribute of all the successful and high-achievers to use their spare moments to the fullest and this is the demarcation point that separates the men/women who keep on reaching milestone after milestone, and those who want to do the same but have no clue or inert.

Many valuable books were read and several were written in the spare moments that the Presidents and leaders in all industries had after a heavy toiling and mind squeezing schedule in their leviathan jobs.

Many skills were learned during those brief periods of time after the college and school by those who are now leading the country in myriad of industries.

Several autobiographies were written during those times the big guns who managed to carve out of their busy schedules!

Other than these prominent people’s story as an instance of using ones spare time valuably and wisely, there are millions and millions of shrewd homemakers who used their time to improve their conditions in their lives, employees who learned new skills and acquired expert knowledge to advance in their career, students who worked part-time to meet their expenses and some who took classed for their future bright life!

Starting today, you could become a better person, a valuable employee, an exemplary boss or leader in your organization, a proud mother or daughter or a son, by using your spare time valuably.

You have every right to demand whatever you want in life from this world and believe, you can get anything toward which you are working on by using your spare moments wisely and in due time life would shower all its blessings.

Be a pirate who looks out in a brass telescope with a purpose for this ship of “Extra time”!

It’s easy to overlook the importance of the extra time that one gets after coming from his/her workp

It’s easy to overlook the importance of the extra time that one gets after coming from his/her workplace, during traveling time, during standing in a line, etc. But the accumulated effect of a well-used time here and there is mind-blowing.

One good reason for this mentality is that any think that time is a resource that’s infinite.

So what way one could possibly use his time productively?

This time is not that leisure time but a time that dedicate for your own growth and improvement in your life. Even 30 minutes to an hour could make a big difference!

Some of the suggestions for your notes( this is only the tip of the iceberg as you could use the time as creatively and usefully as you want):

1. Those extra moments could be used for learning any skills that you have been lacking and which you need or that you think would improve your performance in your business or job or in your personal life.

2. You could go to a library or books you had bought and get to read books that you think would empower your mind, would uplift your soul, make you more knowledgeable in anything you think is important to you, etc.

3. Learning a new language for your future.

4. Taking classes that would reinforce your mental powers and broaden and sharpen your mind, which in turn would assist you enormously to tap into the vast resources that are sleeping inside you. Your success would be in leaps and bounds once you know how to reach that inside great powers of your mind.

5. Some of the spare moments could be used to detoxifying your mental clutters and reflecting upon your life and day’s work.

6. For evaluating where you are toward your ideal, in every area of your life and pondering over your approaches and actions you have been taking. If the actions aren’t supporting you then making subtle or vast change in them.

7. The classes you take and the things you learn during those extra hours outside your workplace maybe related to a field or a passion that want to get involved in the future, maybe because you understood that your current job or business is not your niche or you simply don’t have any inclination toward it, but due to other reasons had to continue it for financial support for you and your family. So you could keep on putting a platform on a new field until you feel assured and confident that it’s high time you jump to the next level in your life.

8. Spiritual enlightenment will prepare a man/woman for greater success and would one that supernatural power which could propel one in the right trajectory.

Just spending some time with the source above will lift you above.

9. Spending your time with the people who are an expert in the field, to learn from them, or with men and women who are like-minded who could share things with you regarding the thing in which you want to improve.

10. You could join a gym or any other activities that would improve your health. A sound body will have a sound mind and when the mind is sound, then achievements will keep on pouring inside.

The beauty with this world is that you always have the freedom and you are the deciding authority of your life. You could mix these principles according to your convenience and select the ones that you believe would make a titan of you, and then just applying it to your life right away.

Abraham Lincoln would run for a book, to read loudly, at every opportunity he got!

He also studied Law in his spare time.

When Lincoln could study Law during a time where there was not much technological advancements it’s just staggering to realize how much you could do today with so much technology development!

It’s a sad scene that many people are like “Spare” tyres which are not used primarily like “main” tyres just because they haven’t realized the power within themselves and how using that “extra” time could make a world of difference in their life!!

Extra time in hand is an extra opportunity to do extra ordinary things and become an extraordinary man or woman and thereby affecting yours and others lives in an extra ordinary way!!

Overwhelmed, too much to do, too little time: story of your life lately?

All kinds of people have their take on how to get more done with less effort and more efficiency, right? Well, here is an excerpt from an oldie but a goodie: Marc Andreessen’s The Pmarca Guide to Personal Productivity.

Productivity porn consists of techniques, tactics, and tricks for maximizing personal productivity — or, as they say, “getting things done”.

Let’s start with a bang: don’t keep a schedule.
He’s crazy, you say!

I’m totally serious. If you pull it off — and in many structured jobs, you simply can’t — this simple tip alone can make a huge difference in productivity.

By not keeping a schedule, I mean: refuse to commit to meetings, appointments, or activities at any set time in any future day.

As a result, you can always work on whatever is most important or most interesting, at any time.

Want to spend all day writing a research report? Do it!

Want to spend all day coding? Do it!

Want to spend all day at the cafe down the street reading a book on personal productivity? Do it!

When someone emails or calls to say, “Let’s meet on Tuesday at 3″, the appropriate response is: “I’m not keeping a schedule for 2007, so I can’t commit to that, but give me a call on Tuesday at 2:45 and if I’m available, I’ll meet with you.”

Or, if it’s important, say, “You know what, let’s meet right now.”

Keep three and only three lists: a To Do List, a Watch List, and a Later List.

The more into lists you are, the more important this is.

Into the To Do List goes all the stuff you “must” do — commitments, obligations, things that have to be done. A single list, possibly subcategorized by timeframe (today, this week, next week, next month).

Into the Watch List goes all the stuff going on in your life that you have to follow up on, wait for someone else to get back to you on, remind yourself of in the future, or otherwise remember.

Into the Later List goes everything else — everything you might want to do or will do when you have time or wish you could do.

If it doesn’t go on one of those three lists, it goes away.

Structured Procrastination.

This is a great one.

This one is lifted straight from the genius mind of John Perry, a philosophy professor at Stanford.

Read his original description, by all means. You even get to see a photo of him practicing jumping rope with seaweed on a beach while work awaits. Outstanding.

The gist of Structured Procrastination is that you should never fight the tendency to procrastinate — instead, you should use it to your advantage in order to get other things done.

Generally in the course of a day, there is something you have to do that you are not doing because you are procrastinating.

While you’re procrastinating, just do lots of other stuff instead.

The other key two-word tactic: Strategic Incompetence.

The best way to make sure that you are never asked to do something again is to royally screw it up the first time you are asked to do it.

Or, better yet, just say you know you will royally screw it up — maintain a strong voice and a clear gaze, and you’ll probably get off the hook.

Of course, this assumes that there are other things that are more important at which you are competent.

Which, hopefully, there are.

Don’t answer the phone.

Let it go to voicemail, and then every few hours, screen your voicemails and batch the return calls.

Say, twice a day.

Hide in an IPod.

One of the best and easiest ways to avoid distractions in the workplace is to be wearing those cute little IPod earbud headphones (or any other headphones of your choice).

People, for some reason, feel much worse interrupting you if you are wearing headphones than if you’re not.

Back in the days of college when I was selling books with the Southwestern Company, I’ve learn

Back in the days of college when I was selling books with the Southwestern Company, I’ve learned a very simple but very important key of success: the schedule. Back then with our Sales Managers, we used to say that the schedule is the lifeline, you break it you are dead. Rory Vaden, the Co-Founder of the training Company Success Starts Now Seminars likes to say that we don’t get paid per hour but for what we do during the hour. How to seize your day and get the best out of it?

It’s pretty much like filling a cup with sand, rocks, maybe water:

Get a clear view of what you need to get done for the day: You can have a very well done and well presented time schedule but if you do not know what you need to see accomplished then you are not going nowhere. That is why first thing you need to focus on is to know the job to be done for the day.

Rate the different tasks you need to do: rating your task is simply giving it the appropriate number stars the task deserves looking it its importance for the goal to be achieved during the day. In other words, if you do not need to read your email starting your day at 7 am, don’t go ahead and get log in. We all know how internet is. You go to google one thing then you see another attractive thing and you remember that you had to check something else and you end up wasting 3, 4, 5, maybe 6 hours in front of your computer doing what???? You tell me! So please rate you tasks from the most important to the least important.

Start with your most important task to be done: The most important task is usually the one that might need more of our time, the one we might face more challenges, but also the one that will unlock the others and make it easier to accomplish them. So starts with the most important one and do not stop until it is all over according to the time frame you have assigned to each task.

Now here is the thing. I am pretty sure you already know all what I just said as I am pretty sure you keep failing at putting it in practice. Why do people fail at what they know how to do? Because it requires discipline, and that is what we’ve learned at Southwestern: how to discipline ourselves. We must have a schedule for everything to get the most out of our day and be committed to respect those schedules: it starts with the eating schedule, the working schedule, the sleeping schedule.

Eating schedule: at what time do you eat everyday? At what time you take your break everyday? Anything you do constantly becomes a habit and if it ’s a good habit, it helps to be more productive. One of the reason people have weight issues is because they don’t have or do not respect their eating schedule. Also, one of the reason we sometimes do not get the job done on time is simply because we stayed 30 minutes longer on break. It might be just 30 minutes but well it counts and can make a big deal.

Working schedule: Starts your day everyday at the same time, take your breaks at the same time, left work possibly at the some time, call your significant, family and friends at the appropriate scheduled time. Do every single task at the time frame you scheduled to have it done and do not let external agents (friends, email, google, phone, coffee…) come in between.

Sleeping schedule: we need to sleep! that is a fact. The world itself has been created in 7 seven days maybe because at the end of each day we need to rest to refresh ourselves and get back to work the next mourning with refreshed mind.

Alright bloggers, now you might thing time management is all about becoming a robot ^_^ Well, maybe that is how it looks like but fact is that you get the job done, success follows, money comes with it, and the whole family is happy. Isn’t that what you are looking for? So take action and seize your day.

One of the ultimate paradoxes of entrepreneurship is that, although we are in complete control of what we do with our time, we never seem to have enough of it to get everything done.

For Julie Morgenstern, author of Time Management From The Inside Out, the key to effective time management starts with taking a macro perspective of your life and your priorities. “To really tackle time,” Morgenstern writes, “you have to look at the big picture…If you don’t have clear goals and priorities, you won’t know where to spend your time.”

Have goals and priorities but still having difficulty getting things done? Follow these additional suggestions from Morgenstern:

Set priorities for your important projects: Not everything on your desk has to be tackled today (or even by you, for that matter). Review all of your projects to determine which ones are most critical to the long-term success of the business, and then delegate the rest.

Schedule time for everything that’s important to you: Don’t think that you’ll get critical tasks done in your “spare time.” Moving forward on your business priorities should be at least as important as everything else on your calendar. In fact, your business priorities should be on your calendar!

Create an oasis of time that is totally under your control: Block out an hour or two each day when you focus exclusively on your important business projects. Take the phone off the hook, shut down your e-mail browser and focus all of your energy on the project at hand. You’ll make steady progress on your priority projects, and emerge refreshed for the challenges of the day.

Let interruptions wait: Short of the roof literally caving in, there are few really important business issues that can’t be put off for an hour or two. Ironically, being temporarily inaccessible often forces subordinates to develop their own answers, and can actually foster the development of stronger problem-solving skills.

Practice saying “no” out loud, with conviction: The most successful entrepreneurs jealously guard their time. In reality, being selfish with the time that you have available is the best way to ensure that the projects that are really important get the attention that they deserve.

I’m re-posting tips from last year that received a lot of positive feedback. It’s not on

I’m re-posting tips from last year that received a lot of positive feedback. It’s not only about what you DO with your time this year, but also what you DON’T DO, freeing up your mind and heart, and giving yourself the energy to pursue your goals. Whether your goal this year is to cure cancer or improve your relationship with loved ones, I hope you succeed.

Are you busy or fruitful? I heard this question recently, and it caused me to think about how the busyness of life can keep us from the important things, the goals we want to achieve in our families, relationships and professional lives. I’m not one to make resolutions each year, but I am one to evaluate what is working and what isn’t. Look back at your 2009—was it very productive? Or were you frequently overwhelmed by your to-do list?

Here are some strategies I’ve tried to use to make my life less busy and more fruitful. (I’m a work in progress.)

1. Set goals based on your talents and true calling. What is your passion? Write down some smaller steps to help you reach your goal.

2. Spend more time thinking (or in prayer/meditation) and reading good books and less time watching TV. These activities boost creativity and energy and help us focus.

3. Reduce your intake of negative news. As a Journalism major, this was tough for me, but I’ve gained more than an hour a day of time and reduced my anxiety level.

4. Consolidate errands, go online or do without. Do you really need a new outfit or another car wash, or can you spend the time/money elsewhere?

5. Delegate, ask for help or just say no to things you do not want on your to-do list.

6. Stop complaining to those who cannot correct a situation. Address problems with the appropriate sources, but don’t waste everyone else’s time over it.

7. Make peace. Resolve conflicts with people in your life; you’ll spend too much time and energy stewing over unresolved conflicts.

8. Encourage and help others, especially the less fortunate.

9. At the beginning of each day, think about what you’d like to accomplish (write it down) and the attitude you would like to project to others.

10. At the end of each day, evaluate how you did on #9, and consider what changes you may need to make.

So, what are your goals or resolutions? Please share the time-saving tips that have worked for you. And best wishes for a happy and most productive new year!

Critical to success in any serious field is time management. While each person may have their own ways of balancing (and defining) deadlines, certain ideas hold true for all:

1. Priorities: During law school, there are a variety of priorities. Daily class preparation, long term exam preparation, any papers/drafts required, extra curriculars, household obligations, job responsibilities, professional development activities…. Define the top priorities in each category and make sure to spend a limited amount of time on each in a regular interval.

2. Mental Health: Take some time (and plan it in) to relax your mind. Focus on priority activities will be more efficient if you maintain a sense of your energy level. Sometimes it pays to take a break or even a nap!

3. Physical Health: Interacting with mental health, physical health is very important. Make the time to exercise, even if it’s only for a short time. At least 3 days a week, focus on getting a good workout.

The theme for the day is: Balance and Limitations. There is not time for everything (unfortunately) so be sure to focus attention where it counts.

Do you always answer your phone? If the answer is “yes”, have you thought about why you do this?

We have all been conditioned at some level (like Pavlov’s pooches) to respond to an urgent ringing in our ears by stopping every important thing we are doing and handling it. Is the call more important than the person you are meeting with in your office? Probably not. Is it more important than that presentation you are preparing? Likely not. Is is a better use of time to pick up the phone or enjoy the time you had carved out for some deeper thought?

By answering your phone you are essentially determining that this phone call is the single most important thing you can be doing with your time. Please make this a choice and not a reaction.

Thankfully we now have caller ID to help us pre-screen these interruptions so we can quickly determine the consequences of not answering.

If my wife is reading this, I will always answer your calls honey

Fairly mundane and routine chores in life often offer valuable lessons in efficiency and productivity. Why? Because we hate spending more time on these necessary evils than we absolutely have to.

Case in point is my morning ritual of unloading the dishwasher (most mornings at least). My two primary goals are: 1) don’t wake my wife (I get up well before she does); and 2) finish as quickly as possible. Therefore, what I DON’T do is take each item as it comes into view and put it away in the order I see it. Often a bowl and a sippy cup are adjacent to each other in the top rack, yet their homes are on opposite sides of the kitchen. The last thing I need is to walk back and forth with one item at a time. Foolish right? What I had better do for efficiency is to grab all the sippy cups and plastic inserts first before making my trek to the kiddy cabinet. This is certainly the most natural, time-saving solution. I repeat this with the bowls, the glasses, the plates, until my task is complete. Seems obvious when it is a dishwasher.

So why should it be any different when it comes to e-mail, phone calls or random interruptions?

The reason we often “feel” it is different (and naturally why it usually is quite different) is that people, unlike glassware, usually convey a sense of urgency (whether or not it is appropriate). When I unload the dishwasher, I get to choose what I will put away and when. There are no utensils yelling at me with arbitrary deadlines. In a way, chores become quite therapeutic because we have the final say on what happens and when. However, we can’t control when somebody walks into our offices, when our phones ring or when we receive an e-mail… bu we still can control our response to these stimuli.

Like with dishes, I can choose to batch my tasks so that I listen to voice-mails, place calls, respond to e-mails or perform the work that is important to me when I choose. This affords you a much greater opportunity to focus on what is most important rather than solely on what is most urgent. The choice is ours!

Workaholics – focus in the new year….

What I have found that works for me better than any New Year resolution that I could ever make is to “focus.” That’s right, focus on what you want to accomplish for 2010.

I would not waste any time in getting yourself organized. Here are some tips on what to do:

Get out a scratch pad and pen (sound familiar? my tip for organization is scratch pad and pen!)

Draw a line down the middle of the first page.

On the left column, write down your goals. (don’t over do it and list more than seven)

On the right column, list down the due date or due month of each goal.

Write out next to each goal how you are going to accomplish each task.

Turn the page and “drill” down the details on how each goal is to be completed.

During the implementation of the task, you have the ability to “change” the way you complete as each goal is finished.

Make sure, when a goal is attained, you make a big “check” mark on it so you can pat yourself on the back for completion of the task.

I think the underlying reason why we don’t follow through with New Year resolutions, is because we don’t focus.

For 2010, make it a point to focus on getting things done. Workaholics can get anything done once we put “focus” to it!

Peace and Love,
