Recently I’ve experienced some odd SSH behavior, my connection is lost after not issuing a command for a while. Usually I get this message:

ME@SERVER:~% Read from remote host SERVER: Connection reset by peer
Connection to SERVER closed.

Nice, indeed. However, this can be fixed by creating the file ~/.ssh/config and pasting this into it:

TCPKeepAlive no
ServerAliveInterval 15

What happens here is that you overwrite the default SSH configuration usually found in /etc/ssh/ssh_config with a different behavior. A timeout interval is set after which your SSH client will request a response from the server. This is usually done via TCP keep-alive, which is unreliable (and insecure) and therefore turned off. So, no more timed-out connections here, great! Feel free to read the ssh_config manpage for more insight.

Its simple – write a select that guarantees the return of nothing. You will need to know your data. In my case this is for adding rows to a log table. The rows are timestamped when they are entered, so I had:

SELECT [Time], [Message] FROM [LogTable]

where [Time] > {fn Now() }

It worked.

Then it began to time out.

Every time the SELECT was run a table scan occurred. The log now has just over 500,000 rows.

I removed some to a history table, down to 100,000, but still no good.

The execution plan says table scan, so that is the obvious cause. I soon discounted indexes, the table is rarely read, and I’m prepared for the table scan when it is, as the select is likely to include [Message] Like ‘%something%’

Then I tried

SELECT [Time], [Message] FROM [LogTable]

where 1 = 2

the execution plan says ‘constant scan’, and the query analyser reports 00:00:00 as the execution time.

FIXED!

root@opensolaris:~# bootadm
bootadm: a command option must be specified
USAGE:
bootadm update-archive [-vn] [-R altroot [-p platform>]]
bootadm list-archive [-R altroot [-p platform>]]
bootadm set-menu [-R altroot] key=value
bootadm list-menu [-R altroot]

Untuk melihat menu booting kita pake command :

root@opensolaris:~# bootadm list-menu
the location for the active GRUB menu is: /rpool/boot/grub/menu.lst
default 0
timeout 30
0 OpenSolaris 2009.06

Nah caranya :

root@opensolaris:~# bootadm set-menu default=(node)

Sekarang merubah waktu booting nya, kita lihat waktu booting di list-menu adalah 30 detik, kalau ingin merubah misalnya menjadi 10 detik ya tinggal seperti ini :

root@opensolaris:~# bootadm set-menu timeout=10
root@opensolaris:~# bootadm list-menu
the location for the active GRUB menu is: /rpool/boot/grub/menu.lst
default 0
timeout 10
0 OpenSolaris 2009.06

Oke selesai sudah, gampang kan

These santa hats mysteriously appeared around the house a few years ago on December 1 – on various paintings, photos and fish. The kids enjoyed running around the house spotting them all- although nothing has yet beat the excitement of waking to find santa hats on their favourite stuffed toys (see previous post).

This inspired us to attempt a bit of sewing and glueing at “TimeOut” for playgroup mums this morning. It is so much fun doing those little special things for your children – especially when they get so much pleasure out of it.

We thought this morning about the way were are similar to God in this respect. He also loves to give good things to his children which we read in matthew 7:

“Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

Sometimes we fall into the trap of thinking that God is a grumpy old guy who just wants to take the fun out of life.

But isn’t he really the type of loving, caring parent who would sneak into the room at night to surprise us with santa hats?

<img class=" " title="Vad stoppar elden?

(He knows the Hawaiian dance, but not the NFL rules?)

Fans were harping on the beloved Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb last year for not knowing that NFL games went into “sudden death” and ended in ties, but now the “idiot” jaunts are proving to be correct.

Here he is defending his idiotic overtime (lack of) knowledge:

First the guy doesn’t even know that he’s no longer playing college football, but now he’s calling time-outs all Chris Webber-style when his team doesn’t have any.

With the ball on the Oakland Raiders 15-yard line with just 27 seconds remaining in the first half, the ingenious McNabb called a non-existent time-out. He was then penalized for doing so, bringing the ball back to the Raiders 20.

McNabb was on full tilt from that point on, as he got sacked on the next play by Oakland’s Richard Seymour, and Philly was forced to kick a field goal. The score was then 10-6 with Oakland leading, instead of a very possible 10-10 tie at the break.

The Raiders went on to win the game, hanging on for a pathetic 13-9 victory over the hapless McNabb and his Philadelphia Eagles.

Oh crap… I’m really sorry. I just kinda zoned out and fell asleep here.

How much more time do I have to get back to you? 20 Minutes?? It’s going to take me at least an hour to get back across town at this time of day. Why didn’t you phone me sooner? You did? Ah crap I must have slept through the calls.

And if I don’t get back in time the changes are permanent? Shit Shit Shit, my wife is going to kill me! I didn’t want her to find out this way. This was just supposed to be a bit of fun once every few months. I don’t want to be a girl all the time..

You have to help me. This is not good… not good at all…

This is Rebecca Lane. I just love redheads.

Fantastisk!

According to a 2008 survey by Technorati, which runs a search engine for blogs, only 7.4 million out

According to a 2008 survey by Technorati, which runs a search engine for blogs, only 7.4 million out of the 133 million blogs the company tracks had been updated in the past 120 days. That translates to 95% of blogs being essentially abandoned, left to WOW (wallow on the web), where they become public remnants of a dream — or an ambition — unfulfilled.

I started blogging in 2006 which seems like a long time ago… then in 2007, prior to taking off on an extended motorcycle trip I started the Northwest Harley Blog. The thinking at the time was that a mix of hobbies (motorcycle and photography) would be a natural fit and thus was born — rantings of a motorcycle enthusiast.

Many people start blogs with lofty aspirations — try to build an audience and leave their day job, land a book deal, get attention from traditional media or simply to share their so-called genius with the world. I did not! Some even assumed that once they started blogging, the world would beat a path to their digital door. Getting started is easy, since all it takes to maintain a blog is a time commitment and inspiration. Some actually believe those TV advertisements about some mommy blogger making $4,000 a month?

As a “closet journalist” I like to provide a unique voice and work to accurately report and find unusual angles on stories related to motorcycle causes and the industry. I also like to provide chronologies of my various ride and rally wanderings. After two+ years, or put another way — after 500 posts, 873 photo’s edited/uploaded, and several thousand moderated comments later I feel the blog is a successful hobby after obtaining on average 24,000 unique monthly views, but it’s also at a cross-roads.

The internet is different now. It used to be about research, accuracy and quality entries. The good bloggers had something to say about the big motorcycle issues of the day. Now it’s about snippets from people who pump out dreck or large excerpts of other articles. Original and high-quality content has become dumbed down. Bloggers are required to spend more time ‘digg-n’, ‘tweeting’, ‘facebooking‘, ‘youtubing‘ and SEOing their posts than they do on the actual posts themselves. Even H-D is pushing their social media outreach staff to pump up the noise level on marketing messages in non-traditional channels — i.e. bloggers.

Sure it’s cool to have all this media presence, you can tweet ad infinitum and make videos clips if you’ve got a burning desire to do so… especially if you love new media and are thrilled to be in constant contact with your fan base or “tribe.” In other words, if its an end unto itself.

But, that’s what bothers me. There is a point of diminishing returns and a mental cost to all the work. In the early days all that was required to “win” at blogging was to show up early each day. Today? You need a team of social marketers to get your message out, a second team to manage any fall-out from whatever you’ve said and a third to manage all the SPAMers and deletion of bad behavior rolled up by the Google machine in the form of drive-by trolls and haters who try and take up residence. As a result blogs have a higher failure rate than restaurants!

Not all blogs fade from lack of reader interest. Some bloggers find themselves too busy — what with, say, band-camp, and swim practice, or perhaps even housework. Others graduate to more immediate formats, like Twitter or Facebook and drop evangelizing via the blog platform. And a few — gasp — actually decide to reclaim some small slice of their personal time. This brings me full-circle about a decision.

I’m going to take a blogging timeout. Little if any new material will appear during the month of October. I plan to resume in November. Why? Having blogged consistently for over three years now, I think it would be wise to take a step back and evaluate the effects (both good and bad) and determine what if any new direction should be taken. If you have an opinion or viewpoint I’m sure you’ll let me know.

I appreciate the allegiance of the blog reader base who subscribe and those who visit the site regularly. If you happen on to this site during the month of October I hope you’ll enjoy looking through the archives.

Enjoy fall and ride safe out there…
