On Friday, September 26, 2008, we drove to Munich on the Autobahn. The City of Munich is very busy. We saw a political rally and visited the Hofbrauhaus. Oktoberfest is a wild carnival with rides, food (including stick-on-a-fish), beer tents, big beers, and plenty of drunk people.We spent our last night in Hotel Der Tannenbaum.

We toured the city of Salzburg on Wednesday, September 24, 2008. Took another funicular up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, which included the royal apartments and the Rainier Military Museum. Also visited St. Peter’s Cathedral and catacombs as well as Mozart’s Birthplace. There was an authentic Austrian fair going on during our visit. Thursday was a resting day. We some shopping.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 was very busy, we visited the resort area in Bavaria (southern Germany). Visited Obersalzberg, location of Hitler’s “Eagles Nest”, situated high on a mountain top, which included a few buildings, underground concrete bunkers and museum. Had lunch and met two couples from Colorado.

On the way back to Maria Alm, we stopped at the Hohenwerfen Castle in the town of Wefren, which is perched high on a mountain and is accessed via a funicular. The bell tower gives a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside.

We then went to a special event in Maria Alm, a village just 8km from our timeshare. Although the event was scheduled during the evening outside, the weather caused it to be moved inside. The event focused on traditional Austrian singing and traditional “Slap Dancing”.

On Monday, September 22, 2008, we visited Schloss (Castle) Mittersill in the Pinzgau Region, which was the home of Baron Hubert von Pantz, who also built the Mittersill Alpine Resort in New Hampshire. We own a timeshare ski week at that resort. Unfortunately, the Schloss is not open for tours.

On Sunday, September 21, 2008, we visited one of Europe’s oldest towns, Hallstat. We rode a funicular up the mountain to the Hallstat Salt Mines. Visited a Catholic Church, where space is very limited for burials. After 12 years in the ground, bodies are dug up to free up space for the newly dead. The skulls and bones are placed on display in an adjacent chapel. On the way back to the timeshare, we stopped in a small village restaurant. The ower and his friends played accordians.

We checked out of our timeshare in Torgon on Friday, September 19, 2008, a day early. We decided to drive to the City of Luzern and stay at the Rosli Hotel Pension on our journey to Austria. We toured Luzern and enjoyed the river and river-side restaurants. We left early on Saturday morning to drive to our next timeshare in Austria.

We arrived at our home base timeshare, Marco Polo Alpina Resort, near Maria Alm, Hinterthal, Austria. Since is was a relatively long drive from Switzerland through Liechtenstein to Maria Alm, we rested when we arrived on Saturday, September 20, 2008.

The Tour began in Montreaux, Switzerland, near Lake Geneva on Thursday, September 18, 2008. The tour (train and bus) included the Gruyeres cheese-dairy, the Village of Gruyeres and Cailler-Nestle chocolate factory. While in the village, we visited the H.R. Giger museum. Giger created the monster in the movie “Alien”.

We drove to Lauterbrunnen on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 to the Berner Oberland Region, which is one of the best areas to enjoy the Alps. Along the way, we were delayed in a traffic jam on the country roads caused by farmers with their cows. We took a cable-car from Stechelberg to the 10,000 ft summit of Schilthorn with rotating restaurant (Piz Gloria), and visited the alpine villages of Gimmelwald, Murren and Birg. It was a short drive back to Lauterbrunnen from Stechelberg. We stayed at the Oberland Hotel, which we liked very much. They have a great restaurant, where we had dinner and breakfast the next morning. We toured the town center of Lauterbrunnen and immediately knew we would return for a future visit. We then drove back to Torgon.

On Wednesday, September 17, 2008, we journeyed to the Jungfraujoch is the “Top of Europe”, the highest railway station in Europe. We took a scenic train ride from Lauterbrunnen station through Wengwald, Wengen, Wengernalp, Kleine Scheidegg, Eigergletscher, Eigerwand, Eismeer and to the top at Jungfraujoch at 11,782 ft. At the top is a tourist complex building with observatory and the “Ice Palace” carved inside a glacier. The imposing Eiger North Wall is at the Eigergletscher train stop.

We arrived in Zurich on Saturday, September 13, 2008, from Boston. We drove to our home base timeshare, Les Cretes-Euroloisirs Resort, Torgon, Switzerland. Resort is located in an alpine village with a very narrow, winding access road from the valley. This is a key ski area.

On Sunday, September 14, 2008, we toured a local village of Aigle, the countryside (Swiss French) and vineyards. Virtually every square inch of land around each home is planted with grapevines. We visited the Aigle Chateau, which was focused on regional winemaking.

We visited the city center of Lausanne and a cathedral (Evangelical Reform Church) on Monday, September 15, 2009. We spent some time at Lake Geneva, which was quite nice. The water was calm and the weather was excellent!
