As an astrologer, I’ve learned long time ago that I can predict timing of events with much greater certainty than their nature.
For instance, I can say that events that will begin to transpire in April of 2010 will crest around August 1, hitting Americans directly where their wallet is with violent force, because all potent forces of heaven will be attacking Venus in the U.S. horoscope.
Since Venus traditionally rules money and relationships, American relationships will suffer either within the country or abroad. I cannot rule out civil unrest, although I would not go as far as predicting civil war.
Unfortunately, I really cannot say what exactly is going to happen. I don’t believe anybody can. In my experience, even the best of psychics often make mistakes when it comes to future events, because we really have the power of the free will.
With this power we still cannot change the forces of time that spin the heavens, but we may lessen or even change their impact to some degree. Of course, our ability to do so is much more evident in our personal lives than on the national or international scope.
But even mundane astrologers are still handicapped in their ability to predict, since no nation has a birth certificate with official time stamped on it. The U.S., for instance, has at least 4 horoscopes that astrologers like to consider. Even its date of birth is in dispute, since historical facts point to July 2 rather than July 4 that we all celebrate.
I can assure you though, that no matter what happens around August 1 of 2010, we will survive, and the world is not going to come to an end in December of 2012 either.
About 100 years ago, a little known guru of a much more famous guru Paramahansa Yogananda wrote a tiny treatise “The Holy Science” that went unnoticed by even Yogananda’s disciples.
However, this little gem deserves almost as much reverence as Bhagavat Gita. There, Sri Yukteswar recalculated yugas (Divine divisions of time) based on precession of equinox and position of the Sun in relationship to the Galactic Center.
Yugas describe the relationship of Light and Darkness in terms of time.
There are 8 yugas in total in what is called 1 Divine Day of 24,000 years. They start with the Ascending Kali Yuga of 1200 years, during which the light of human consciousness gradually increases.
He pinpointed the beginning of that yuga at the year of 499 a.d..
This means, that in the 1699 a.d. the Ascending Dwapara Yuga began, and it will last until 4099 a.d..
During Ascending Dwapara Yuga, the light of human consciousness increases enough to develop amazing technologies based on atomic and molecular manipulations of material reality, as well as developing abilities to manipulate electricity, magnetic and gravitational forces and the like.
By the end of this yuga, humanity as the whole is also going to perfect mystical and occult techniques, enabling itself to expertly manipulate reality.
During the Ascending Treta Yuga, personal relationship with God is going to become commonplace, and during the Ascending Satya Yuga, the humanity, once again, would enter its Golden Age.
The Descending Satya Yuga will follow, and the Divine Light would begin to gradually diminish until it would be totally shut out during the Descending Kali Yuga.
If you look at the known human history, you would agree that the year of 499 a.d. falls smack in the middle of so called Dark Ages, and as of 1699, humanity began technological advancement in earnest.
Since we are at the threshold of the Advancing Dwapara Yuga, the technological advancement we have seen so far is only the beginning.
I predict that during the next decade technology is going to continue develop in leaps and bounds, particularly computer and nano technology, revolutionizing our relationship with the world. E-readers are going to become commonplace, and even catalogs are going to be on e-readers rather than on paper. TV and computer technology will merge completely. We are going to use “TV sets” for reading e-mail, solving “websudoku” puzzles, and reading news as much as watching them.
Cyber space is going to continue being the new gold mines of the world economy, and green technology is going to improve and cheapen enough to become common place.
Nano technology is going to affect every facet of our lives, from clothes to medicine, but it is in medicine where it is geared to make major impact. By the end of the next decade, we may finally defeat cancer, and our greatest concern is going to be infectious diseases.
I would be watching with interest the time period between October of 2010 and April of 2011 for some remarkable technological break-through, as Neptune – Uranus mutual reception returns for the last time.
Economically, during the next decade the U.S., Europe, Russia, China and India will continue to be the main engines, as the U.S. will continue to lead in consumerism, Russia will continue to dominate the market of natural resources, China will remain the world’s greatest factory, and India is going to finally reap the benefits of its investment in education.
But the U.S and Europe are going to be much poorer, and India, Russia, and China much richer.
This will change the political picture, as Russia and China will become the 2 main super powers.
I also believe that Pluto in Capricorn is going to undermine democracy everywhere on Earth and squash all civil unrests that flare up, and the U.S. is no exception. Of course, Orwell’s Big Brother comes to mind, but it would still remain the exaggerated version of reality. While all powers are going to strengthen their control, no country is going to descent to the fascist or communist regimes of the past.
Terrorist acts and the fear they spread are going to dominate the world politics. I am certain that Israel and Palestine are going to remain being locked in conflict, and Middle East is going to remain being the nest of terrorism. But acts of terror are going to be more sophisticated, using technological sabotage as well as suicide bombers.
During Ascending Dwapara Yuga, Light and Darkness fiercely compete with each other, and the world is full of shadows. But the Light is getting stronger every year, so, in my mind, the most important developments of the next decade are going to begin taking hold as of March of 2012. That is when Neptune is finally going to settle in Pisces, its own sign, while Uranus straddles through Aries.
I believe that spring is going to mark the beginning of the quiet revolution within human mind. I don’t mean the plentitude of small technological devices that would allow us to control them with the force of our thoughts. They already exist and are about to invade our everyday life. I bet, one of the most sought out presents this X-Mass is going to be the game where people can move a ball with their mind alone.
No, I mean the unbelievable rise in consciousness on individual level. We saw a similar spurt in consciousness during the early 80s of the last century, when Uranus and Neptune traversed Sagittarius at the same time. Sagittarius, the country of Jupiter is the sign of expansion of consciousness, while Uranus represents break-trough and Neptune is the symbol of oneness.
In Aries, Uranus is going to emphasize unique individuality of each of us, while Neptune, strong in its own sign, is going to bring mysticism and spiritual oneness to the forefront of consciousness.
Of course, for many, Neptune in Pisces would signify the descent into drugs, and Uranus in Aries coupled with Pluto in Capricorn could easily describe flare ups of anarchy. After all, Pluto walking through the sign of government and corporate structures is going to change them all big time, forcing many into quiet and not-so-quiet revolt.
Uranus in Aries is going to ensure that Big Personalities rule that moment of time, and independent contractors are going to outnumber employees everywhere. Even employees are going to be much more independent, often working from home thanks to continuously evolving technology and loss of all kinds of corporate benefits.
The Ascending Dwapara Yuga by no means signifies the end of suffering, and Africa is going to continue to be the epicenter of human suffering for a while. Changes of climate, poverty, infectious diseases and terrorist acts are going to continue being our terrible bane for a few decades longer, as Darkness does not give up so easily.
It is going to be up to us as individuals to uphold the Light, and Neptune and Uranus are going to give us a little hand there during the next decade. After all, all the disasters that befall the human kind are there to forge the kindness of the heart, so God may enter it.

Quantum Law of Attraction Timing We are now starting our 2000 year journey into the Age of Aquarius.

Quantum Law of Attraction Timing

We are now starting our 2000 year journey into the Age of Aquarius. With this new age comes a new paradigm called the Laws of Quantum Physics.

There are two schools of thought pertaining to these new Quantum Laws. One is the school championed by the Universities, mathematicians and physicists. They are searching for truth and meaning to life in the laboratories and the classroom.

Then there is the school of Spiritual Quantum Physics. This is the one I choose to write and talk about for several reasons.

One, it includes a Creator God, a grand architect, who put the whole Universe in motion, who put all the energy in the Big Bang Theory in the first place. Who placed you, I and the Universe under Natural Law. Who wants us to have a better life.

I reject the God of Chaos and the Big Bang Theory.

Besides what good is the new paradigm of the Laws of Quantum Physics for the common folk, if it is locked up in the Universities to be used and studied by a select few.

The age of the select few is over. The Age of Aquarius has torn the lid off the box of secrets. It is the select few religious leaders, politicians, professors, lawyers, doctors and CEO’s who have help create the mess we are in. There is no room in the New Age of Aquarius for them. They will become as extinct as the Do Do birds.

So I say let us use the new paradigm of the Laws of Quantum Physics for answers in OUR every day life.

The most popular of the new laws is the Law of Attraction. This law tells us that what we think about, we attract and what we attract creates our life. The major problem with many who use the Law of Attraction for health, wealth and love is the timing factor.

To explain this Quantum Timing factor we must go back to basics.

First of all the Laws of Quantum Physics tell us that there exists an infinite ocean of intelligent energy called the Quantum Ocean. There is no time nor space there. Everything that is, was or will be exists there.

It is a timeless, space-less infinite point where you, I and the Universe exist.

It is the Mind of the Creator God.

Now you and I ‘blinked out’ of the Mind of God as individual souls, onto the physical plane. We ‘blink out’ to experience “Life.” And to use the experience to fulfill our destiny, This is the destiny of all souls who have ‘blinked out.’

And that destiny is to evolve, become more conscious, individualize and become more God-like.

We are a soul that builds a physical body, and emotional body, as well as a mental body. We are not a body who has a soul. We are a soul who has a body.

The connecting link between us, as individual souls, and the Quantum Ocean, Mind of God is our Aura.

Simply speaking, what ever energies we carry in our Auras uses the Law of Attraction to create our lives.

Our present health, wealth and happiness is a direct result of the energies we carry with us. The energies we carry in our Auras we have put there with our thoughts. But understand this also. Much of our ill health and poverty and unhappiness has also been put into our minds by others.

Thoughts are things and if we want to change our state of health, wealth and happiness we must change our thought. Also we must learn to guard ourselves from the negative thoughts of others.

Using our thoughts we can attract better health wealth and love out of the Quantum Ocean into our Auras.

But here is the catch that many do not understand about the Law of Attraction.

Our Auras are already full. And if we are poor, sickly or unhappy or feel unloved, our Auras are full of these negative energies.

The new healthier, wealthier, loving energies we are thinking out of the Quantum Ocean, Mind of God, cannot instantly enter our Auras and manifest as health, wealth and love. Quantum Time is needed. The time it will take these new positive energies to work their way through and dissolve the negative energies we have been carrying around in our Aura.

For some it will be like the slow drip of pure, clean water drip, drip, dripping into a 55 gallon drum of dirty water (your Aura.) For some it will be like a steady stream of pure clear water flowing from a tap into a 55 gallon drum.

The Quantum timing will be different for us each one of us.

But it will work. The Law of Attraction of positive energies out of the Quantum Ocean is just that, a Law.

How long will it take you?

How much gook do you have stored up in your Aura?

Just know that these moments will rarely be surpassed
A darkslide is but a brief fling with destiny
And a fakie heelflip to 50:50 will only pass when time drips like water through the hole in a roof of an abandoned warehouse stuck schewed and leaning to a new bank
It is for moments like this that the eye adjusts to the light from a few hours on dark colours
It can be high looking down from the vert
But it can seem insurmountable looking up
And when a perfect ollie is slowed to fractions of fractions there can be little need to breathe
We just fall to our knees
Coz it’s a sign of his beauty and goodness
That holds all the molecules together as rubber, wood and metal are cooked up in a cauldron of majesty
His majesty that let’s the very pop begin and the stillness speak
Some of us are the obServers alone of this art and with a frantic need to tie ourselves into the techno frame dream an illusion and collapse
And yet
This very moment
We hear the crisp sound of the fulfillment of timing, style in the noise of a 360flip.

I recently listened to Brett Hull’s NHL Hall of Fame induction speech. He recalled a meaningfu

I recently listened to Brett Hull’s NHL Hall of Fame induction speech. He recalled a meaningful bit of advice he’d received from his father (also an NHL HOFer). The senior Hull had encouraged him to understand that when furthest from the play he is closest to it. Brett expressed gratitude that he was able to figure out what his dad meant by this and connected that understanding directly to his success as a professional hockey player.

Growing up as a Blues fan, I saw plenty of great Brett Hull moments, and some of those came to mind as I thought about the advice he had received. Brett Hull was an excellent all-round hockey player with a legendary slapshot and a remarkable ability to locate the back of the net. But his timing stands out in my mind as his supreme skill, one for which I believe he was unrivaled. Unfortunately, mine did not always align with his. On one occasion I had front row tickets directly behind the net into which he scored a first period hat trick, but missed the entire first period of the game due to a snow related traffic jam.

Of course, it is my memory of Brett’s timing, not mine, that helps me “get it” as far as the further/closer advice is concerned. Somehow Brett always wound up at the exact spot on the ice that made it seem as though the puck had been placed on a tee for him to take a whack at. Fact is, the puck arrived from every conceivable direction at ever-varying velocities. To a hockey observer whose never played the game, some of the passes seemed like slapshots in their own right, while others appeared to just squirt out of a scrum-like pile in the faceoff circle. Yet, the result was nearly always the same – a connection with hull’s stick and a sizzling shot on goal.

Though it is the close-in photos of those connections that helped advance Brett’s fame, it is a vision from afar, a perception of the flow of the game, the possession of a perspective that seemed as though he were watching from a press box high above the ice that was key to positioning that set up every shot. Here in lies the Bobby and Brett/father and son Hall of Fame legacy.

Later in his speech, Brett pointed out that it is personal relationships, not statistics, that he treasures most about his great career. And it here that the further/closer principal takes on the most meaning in my life as a Christian as well, as it plays out in many every day situations where timing and connection are important. Here, too, a father-son legacy unfolds. It is focus on my Heavenly Father, His revelation in His word, the guidance of His Holy Spirit and the living example of His exalted Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, that prove effective for the power of grace in the micro-moments of life in this world. Many people would encourage me differently – to be self focused, self-healing, self-directed, self empowered, self motivated and to apply infinite suggestions on self-help in order to become skilled in the handling of earthly details. But I continually find that the further I am from them the closer I am to them.

This’ll just be quick, as I don’t have enough time (!) today to stay in front of the computer. I’ll soon be off on the first of a series of meetings that’ll take me off to another side of Nairobi. I just wanted to share this story to illustrate the importance of timing. It has to be perfect.

In the first series of Dragons’ Den, two guys came, asking for an investment for their invention: a machine that automatically rocked a baby to sleep, whilst in its pram. The dragons were impressed enough to make an offer, but the entrepreneurs turned it down because the equity share being asked for was far more than what they were willing to give up. They vowed to make it anyway, without the dragons’ assistance.

Fast forward to the second series: The guys came back to the den. They never managed to launch their product. They had spent the year perfecting the machine but hadn’t really sold much. (Did they even try to sell any?) They were now back to asking for an investment for their better machine. In the interim, another similar product had already launched and sold a huge number of units in retail stores.

This time, no dragon came to their rescue. The dragons made it very clear that the machine was no longer a viable business proposition because it now had serious competition. The poor entrepreneurs left without a single pence. Not even the dragon who offered to invest in them in the first series wanted to have anything to do with their product.

Amazing how one year went just like that and how things changed for everybody. Something to think about for both investors and entrepreneurs.

I was in the supermarket yesterday, the Monday before Thanksgiving, shopping for things like milk and lettuce and olives, when I noticed all of the extra displays at the ends of the aisles. Big towers of string beans and yams and chicken broth and onions, those crispy onions in the can. “What is going on?” I said to myself, well, maybe to the person next to me, too, at the yogurt. What do they think it is, Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving was last week.

We’ve been eating leftovers since Tuesday. That would be the Tuesday before, well, Wednesday. Last Wednesday. In our house this year, the thanking took place early. We live far from family, something like 1500 miles, okay 1546 miles, if you drive. If you drive 23 hours and 48 minutes. Far, however you figure it. So, we don’t visit on specified holidays. We visit when we need to, or can. Mostly, Mom does the visiting because she is one person and we are three.

“I am going to be in the neighborhood the third week of November,” she said from the phone in New York. “I’ll stop off on the way back.” The “neighborhood” was Florida. We are in Texas. It is all relative, especially when you are a relative.

“Fabulous, we will have Thanksgiving. Better, we will have Thanksgiving on Daphne’s birthday,” I said. “It will be so festive, two celebrations at once.” Growing up, we generally hit the holidays on the actual day, but as college and work and doctors’ call schedules interfered, we began to choose times when everyone was around, regardless of the calendar. We usually got the month right, but sometimes we didn’t. It didn’t matter. It wasn’t about the sun and the moon. It was about us.

So, I went to the supermarket when everybody else was buying milk and lettuce and olives and loaded up the wagon with string beans and yams and pecan pie and a colossal 16 pound turkey. We got homework done quickly and got out the carving knives and set the table with a pilgrim cloth I purchased in August. And we turned 14 and opened presents and told funny stories and tried the cranberries again, but still didn’t like them. Which is just fine. We can taste them again, next June.

Christmas and Thanksgiving can be a very stressful time if you’re the chief cook and bottlewas

Christmas and Thanksgiving can be a very stressful time if you’re the chief cook and bottlewasher in the house. Even if you regularly cook roast meals, there is extra pressure on these two occasions to produce a meal fit for the King of Siam and his entourage because Christmas and Thanksgiving almost invariably involve big family get togethers.

Your exact meal is obviously entirely up to you but I thought it might just be helpful to map out a suggested main-course menu (because this is what we all worry about) plus suggested timing. Make this schedule the basis of your Christmas menu planning and add or delete items that you want to include or remove. Remember, the clever cook will always plan ahead so that they don’t totally lose their mind (and cool) on ‘The Big Day’.

Suggested Main Menu – Serves 8

Cider roast turkey with glazed apples and pears with sticky shallots

‘Pigs in blankets’ (little sausages wrapped in bacon)

Chestnut & cranberry roll

Crisp-topped sprouts

Buttery caraway carrots

Bread sauce

Gravy

……………………………………………………….

PREPARING AHEAD – All dishes to be kept in fridge or freezer until needed

Up to 1 Month Ahead

Parboil and freeze the Roast Potatoes

Make the Chestnut and Cranberry Roll, if freezing

***Up to 3 Days Ahead***

***If you have bought a frozen turkey, think about how you plan to defrost it. Be aware that in a fridge a frozen bird of the size appropriate to feed 8 people could take anything from a day and a half to two and a half days to properly defrost. Suggested sizes of bird are here and tips on defrosting here (this second link takes you to the British Food Standards Agency site).

Up to 2 Days Ahead

Make the Chestnut and Cranberry Roll if making from fresh

Prepare and roast the Glazed Apples and Pears with Sticky Shallots

Christmas Eve

Roast the Chestnut and Cranberry stuffing roll – keep in the foil

Make the bread sauce and store, covered, in the fridge

Boil or steam the sprouts and prepare the topping for the Crispy-topped Sprouts

Steam the carrots for the Buttery Caraway Carrots

Prepare the Pigs in Blankets

Defrost anything frozen in the fridge.

CHRISTMAS DAY

09.30am:

Stuff the turkey, weigh and calculate cooking time. Heat oven to 190C / 375F / Gas mark 5 / (Fan oven: 170C, approx 340F)

10.00am:

Put the turkey in to roast (timings based on a 4.5 kg / 10lb turkey)

11.00am and 12.00pm:

Check the roasting tin – add more cider if needed

12.30pm:

Remove the foil from the turkey to let it brown

1.00 pm:

Leave the turkey to rest. Put the potatoes in the oven to roast, if frozen. (If not, put in at 1.10pm). Make the gravy.

1.30pm:

Turn the oven up to 220C / 425F / Gas 7 /(Fan 200C / 400F). Turn the potatoes and add the stuffing roll to oven to reheat. Put the ‘pigs in blankets’ in oven to cook.

1.45pm:

Reheat the apples, pears and shallots in the oven if room, or in the microwave if not, adding a little extra glaze. Finish the sprouts and the carrots and heat the bread sauce, adding a little milk if it seems too thick. Take the foil off the stuffing.

2.00pm:

Serve and enjoy! If you have a hot pudding planned for dessert, place it in the oven and allow the residual heat to warm it through while you eat.

Photo: Enver Ucarer | Stock.xchng The principle of perfect timing has often been brought up in Drago

Photo: Enver Ucarer | Stock.xchng

The principle of perfect timing has often been brought up in Dragons’ Den enough times to make it an important lesson to learn. Some dragons tell the budding entrepreneurs, “I wish you came to pitch last year. I would then have saved you from losing your money.” Sometimes, the statements would run along the lines of “It’s not yet a business. It’s too early in its stages to make it a viable proposition for me.” But the one declaration I like about timing is when they say, “Let’s get this product to market quickly.”

The dragons don’t sit still. As soon as the shoot is a wrap, due diligence starts and, soon enough, even before the ink dries on paper, they’re already pushing their “investees” into action. They immediately make sure that targets are set, productions are in full swing, and distribution structures are in place. They know that if they don’t act upon their investments quickly, many things can happen: The interest for the product could wane. The market could fall apart. Inflation could affect the value of their money. And so on.

One great thing about appearing in Dragons’ Den is that people get to know you and start looking for your products. Ask Sarah Lu. Within just a span of a few months, her production levels were soaring and it had a lot to do with Deborah Meaden making things fall into place in a heartbeat. Timing. Time indeed is of the essence. And now, Sarah Lu has expanded her range of DIY dolls beyond human figures. I can almost bet that she’ll put timing in her top five priorities, when it came to explaining her success.

I wish more investors were like the dragons. My experience in Kenya shows me that many aspiring investors here are yet to learn the art of perfect timing. Generally, they tend to drag their feet on decisions and so lose out on the opportunity to strike at the peak hour of the market. They allow so many viable businesses to fall by the wayside because they don’t understand that, yes, these businesses need the funding now and not later. And what’s worse is that majority of investors here, beyond the required due diligence they impose upon the businesses, aren’t really hands-on people. They don’t mentor the entrepreneurs they put into their stables. But that is now a lesson for another day.

Timing puts the development of the business as top priority in the agenda. It marks the business as “urgent” and dissolves hurdles, arguments, and other barriers in the forward march of the business.

Today, I’m putting timing as a priority in my to-do list. I’ll have to make phone calls and such. I can’t wait another day for something that needs to happen for CAN-DO!

Bye o/

There was an employment discrimination case several years ago involving one of the major television networks. The employee alleged that although qualified, she was denied an anchor spot on the evening news because she didn’t have the “right appearance”. The network’s position was that she wasn’t qualified.

That’s a tough position to be in for anybody. If you win somebody has judged you to be ugly, if you lose they determined you to be incompetent As I recall the court went on to declare her the winner and the critics subsequently made her a two time loser.

The fact of the matter is that when you’re not your own boss appearances do make a lot of difference. Maybe if you’re ugly you should stay out of the public eye until you become a successful entrepreneur.

If looks were a factor it’s debatable whether entrepreneurs like Donald Trump and Ross Perot would have amassed their fortunes. Or how about one of the most public of our business leaders, auto executive Lee Iacocca?

Each of these three regularly appear in the public eye and their opinions are listened to with great reverence. Had they not had their millions behind them I doubt that their pronouncements would attract much attention. Perhaps the conclusion could be drawn that if you don’t have the looks that fit the public perceptions, make lots of money and then no matter how ugly you are, people will listen.

If you take the route of the ugly entrepreneur, timing is important. It’s important not to start attracting the attention until things are on the upswing.

Trump began by gambling with his fathers real estate empire, fortunately for him it was during a time of escalating inflation and real estate paid handsomely. Iacocca was once a disposed executive. Before telling everybody that would listen how to run General Motors, Perot had more than a couple of years when he himself lost hundreds of millions at a crack. But if you have enough money, we’ll listen regardless of what you look like or what you have to say.

Take the recent case of the Supreme Court nominees. Both sides of the debate would not dispute the fact that Judge Bork had a distinguished legal background. But was it his legal work or his looks that doomed his nomination?

Gregory Peck, who, by any standards, would be a leading candidate to play a Supreme Court Justice were they casting a movie, narrated a scathing and effective advertisement against the Bork nomination. If a guy that looked like Bork had done the TV commercial and if a nominee with Bork’s record looked like Gregory Peck, do you think the outcome would have been different?

Another recent televised hearing matched a congressional committee against a lone witness. The public interrogators were primed for the witness. They had announced their intentions to tear this guy apart. If he had looked like Judge Bork, they probably would have.

But this witness was a steely eyed, decorated Marine Lt. Colonel. He looked the part. Even Gregory Peck couldn’t have played the role better. Had he shown up in civilian clothes or hadn’t fitted the public’s perception of what a dedicated Marine should look like, the results of that hearing might have been much different.

Trump, Perot and other successful entrepreneurs were able to get started and be successful on their merits and not on their appearances. Maybe being an entrepreneur is the right answer for talented people like Judge Bork. Why beat yourself over the head if you don’t fit the role model. As an entrepreneur it’s performance that counts.

Of course there are some exceptions. I’m sure that there are at least a few cookie bakers out there that feel that appearances have too much to do with selling cookies. Who really thinks the success of Mrs. Fields cookies has more to do with taste than looks?

“Bake a better cookie and the world will beat a path to your door” goes the American dream. That’s what the twenty year old ex-ski bunny Debbie Fields set out to do. Only problem was that nobody showed up to buy the cookies. That’s when the attractive Mrs. Fields adopted an effective strategy. When she personally distributed free samples, everybody followed her back to her door. I wonder if the two hundred and twenty five pounder that makes the best cookies I have ever eaten would attract such a following.

I guess appearances probably make can make a difference everywhere. Because it’s your business project the right appearance and remember to look beyond appearances to find the smart cookies.

Presenting involves a contract between audience and presenter, and clearly stated starting and endin

Presenting involves a contract between audience and presenter, and clearly stated starting and ending times are a key part of that contract. Compliance with these requirements is an important indicator of the health of that contract and the respect that both sides have for each other.

Start on Time

As presenter you control the room. You are going to be that group’s leader for however long you keep the stage. As with all groups, there is an initial period of gentle testing where the group explores the behavioral boundaries around them. “How firm is the leader going to be?” “Do they stick to their promises?” “Who is in charge?”

Although frequently sub-conscious, these questions are all hanging around the room, and there is no truer way of testing out the answers than by testing the area of time! If members of the audience are late, and you wait for them, then you allow power to transfer from yourself, to them. If you stick to your guns however and start regardless, then you retain the power balance for yourself, and late-comers become merely that; late!

Courtesy

If you hold up proceedings till all the laggards have assembled then the individuals who did extend you the courtesy of an on-time arrival rapidly learn that there is no reward for being on schedule. Your priority is to those who were on time. Don’t keep them waiting for others.

Finish on time

As important as starting on time, is finishing on time. While the start time is all about the audience extending courtesy to the presenter, it is by respecting the stated finish time that the presenter repays that respect. If the presentation is to last 30 minutes, then keep it to 30 minutes! Presenters who over-run are rewarded with seat-shuffling and increasingly exaggerated watch-checking.

What about the VIP?

I started out this blog by talking about power, and how within the presentation environment you are the leader. Where does this leave VIP members of the audience and what to do if it’s the head-honcho who is the tardy one?

The subject of the power dynamic between presenters and VIP’s would take up a whole extra blog, so I will restrict this point purely to the area of time-keeping.

If you are presenting, and you know that there is an especially important person in the room who must be there to hear what you have to say, then it would be foolish to start without them. The mere fact that someone in authority is abusing that position by being late rather than setting a positive example by being on time already indicates that they have a powerful sense of ego, so it would be a mistake to deliberately attempt to deflate that ego, tempting as it might be.

There is however, a half-way house that will allow you to start on time, while still waiting for the late VIP. The technique is to start a discussion with your audience while you are waiting so that the awkward gap becomes productively filled.

Welcome your audience as you would normally, thanking them for attending, and briefly outlining the presentation agenda and objectives.

State that you are going to wait a few more moments for Mr or Ms X to arrive, and then immediately tell the audience that in order to use this time productively, you would like to go around the table and find something out from them.

Use the ensuing discussion time to find out something relevant to your presentation. You have full control of what this subject will be; It could be their past experience with a product or process, their key objectives for the presentation, or their opinions about key challenges and opportunities faced.

Select a subject area that supports the thrust of your presentation, and avoid contentious areas that might detract from your message.

As you facilitate the discussion, capture key points onto a flip-chart so that they then remain visible for the rest of the session.

When the late VIP does then arrive, you can welcome them cordially, gently close down the discussion, and move into the planned body of your presentation. What has happened though is that you are now starting from a position of vastly increased strength. By being late, the VIP has given you the chance to work the room and develop a rapport with their team. You now have comments and people that you can refer back to for support as you present.

Above all, you kept control of the process, and without inflaming anyone’s egos, remained in charge of the room!

Well Senators and Congress people of the Great “United” States.

Well Senators and Congress people of the Great “United” States. Let’s play a little game of Dare, like we did when we were children. You did grow up didn’t you? Some of those Town Hall Meetings made me wonder.

I dare the people elected to represent everyones best interests and make Health Care affordable for ALL citizens. No excluding those already sick, the elderly, the high risk, the handicap, the homeless, or the terminally ill, or anyone else who might seek or need medical care more often others.

I dare both sides of the aisle to put aside all other outside influences and personal biases and work together. A health care bill only, no Pork, no special project $$ for this state or that.

I dare you as my representatives to quit taking money from those whose job it is to lobby for or against this Health Care bill. I don’t want to wonder if you voted based on bribes, gifts, contributions, or pew placement within your church.

I dare all of you voting on this issue to stop your current Health Care Program and become a recipient of benefits based on the Health Care Bill your currently trying to put together. I figure if you have to carry the same Health Care Program the rest of us do, all of you would probably do a much better job at resolving the divisive issues, than you presently are.

I totally dare you to remove the anti-trust exemption without giving it a second thought and to subject the insurance industry to severe civil $$ and criminal penalties such as jail time, against both the company and the individuals in charge, when it is discovered they have discriminated against an individual or a group of people, through coverage denial, reduction, or rate inflation.

I dare you to find a way for those who cannot afford health care to have an opportunity to earn all or part of it, since there really are no free rides in life. A possibility is through service hours in clinics, VA hospitals, nursing homes, local hospitals, and mental health facilities. Have you been to one of those lately that couldn’t use a little extra help.

I dare you to make some form of minimum health care mandatory for all citizens. If we can regulate and require insurance on vehicles, houses, and lives, why wouldn’t we require insurance on the most important thing of all–ourselves. For those that argue they won’t need it, offer a health insurance rebate at the end of each year to those that do not use their benefits at all.

I dare you to create a public option that is cost effective, offers benefits comparable to plans in the private sector, and have an opt out feature if a state already has affordable health care choices in place, or get creative and help with low-interest loans to finance the start-up of regulated private health care co-ops. This would keep the government out of the Insurance business. Come on Sen.’s Schumer, Lieberman, Sanders, Brown and Carper, I’m sure you can find common ground on this issue.

I dare you, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R) or Sen. Lamar Alexander (R) to come up with an alternative Health Care Plan since you don’t seem to like anything about the one you and your colleagues are getting ready to debate. Time to put up or shut as my father would say.

And on a personal note…Dear Sen. Lugar, your wrong, now IS the time for Health Care Reform. Maybe if you were without health care benefits like I and others in your state are, you would vote differently on the Senate bill. What issue besides the Economy could possibly be more pressing? I work, vote, and pay taxes in Indiana and I’m prepared to vote you and anyone else out that stands in the way of much-needed changes to the Insurance industry and Health Care.

I was inspired to write this little piece after giving two of my friends advice today… It just flowed freely from my lips… I took a step back and realized how much it made sense…

Love and/or Relationships often mimick The Shoe that you really really really want, but it just doesn’t fit. Rather than buying your size, you buy 1/2 a size up or below. You figure that after using it a few times you can wear it out so that it can finally be comfortable. You buy insoles or any other accessory to help the fit. In time you realize that the shoe still hurts regardless of some of your interventions. Eventually you know that the only time you can wear it out is if you can either get drunk enough to not feel the pain but the following morning when you sober up, you know you are going to pay for it! Another is being in a situation where you can wear them out but know that you will have the opportunity to sit down for most of the time and not have to stand up. Unfortunately, the problem with this is you feel “caged” in your shoes since you can’t get up and dance or socialize as much as you would like. Eventually these shoes just end up in your shelf, but not at the back because you love looking at them but you know that it’s just too painful to wear them.

When Love is Right, the fit will be perfect, comfortable, and freeing.

When I first met you, I had doubts. You’re homeless, you’re an actor. I was afraid the age difference would be a problem. But I couldn’t dismiss you just on that, I had to actually get to know you. And I’m so glad I did because you’re truly one of the sweetest, kindest people I’ve met. Ever. But.. we’re at really different places in our lives. Which is a grossly cliché thing to say, but it’s true. I’m not feeling what I need to feel to be in a relationship with someone.

I have lines again? Yep. A monologue in fact, from my one night only performance of a little theatrical piece called “The First Time I Ever Initiated a Breakup Myself.”

Deliberate, premeditated, perhaps painstakingly planned: I imagine most breakups of this “it’s just not working” sort sound scripted, peppered with vague to blatant clichés. (We’re not a good fit. We want different things. It’s not you, I think you’re great.)

“Uh…last time I checked, you went on half a date with him,” I see you thinking, “Why all the drama? Actresses.“

If only it were that simple (she says, dramatically). Let me catch you up.

Two roads converged on a New York night and I? I took the one less traveled by. Yep, I gave my 20 Year Old, Actor, Trader Joe’s Crush a chance. I realized I couldn’t write him off without actually getting to know him- beyond the labels- first. And so that first date we did go bowling. Turned our backs on The Gutter’s nostalgic charm and vintage prices in favor of a typical animated screens, dozens of lanes, non-carding, bowling alley. And had a lot of fun. And I solidly kicked his ass all three games. Which he didn’t seem to hold against me because at the end of the date he made plans to see me again. And I was pleased. He’s my crush after all.

This continued for the next several weeks. A movie here, a meal there, a few long romantic strolls. I met some of his friends. (Surprisingly a huge confidence boost. I never met any of Cute Theatre Boy or Central Park Guy’s friends- truth be told they didn’t have many. Trader Joe’s Crush’s friends showered me with complements. I was called pretty, stunning, witty, adorable, and told I had awesome dimples. All by men who were obviously not trying to get in my pants. Ha, I was “approved”, fun date.) My roommates gave their blessing (“He seems cute, goofy, and super sweet. I like him.”)

We’d only been on a handful of dates when I got terribly sick. Your cliché New York guy (hell, any cliché guy) would respond to such sickness along these lines: “I’m so sorry you’re feeling like shit, but um.. we haven’t dated enough for me to want to see you like that, so…give me a call when you feel better?” Not Trader Joe’s Crush. He took care of me, brought over soup and movies, told me stories- filling my silence when I couldn’t talk, kissed my possibly infectious lips, and cuddled with me when I couldn’t sleep. It was without a doubt the nicest thing a guy has ever done for me. Top 5 nicest things anyone (who’s not my parent) has ever done for me.

Seems like I have a pattern, doesn’t it? Some traumatic health issue befalls me in the early stages of a romance and accelerates the relationship to a place where it really isn’t ready to go yet (I’m talking about my Cute Theatre Boy episode, of course). Was I thinking this? No. This is pure hindsight. I was thinking how nice it was to have a distraction from the intense pain in my throat. Was I thinking about what it must mean that he was being so nice to me? No. I was thinking how safe it feels to have someone share your bed when you are bedridden.

They say in relationships, timing is everything. They are right.

Before I got anywhere near better, he was gone. On vacation to visit family in the sorta-South for 2.5 weeks. Which confines all communication to the phone, very hard when your throat is so inflamed you can’t talk. Every phone call is basically the same on my end, a slow progression: mmhm ouch, still can’t talk; it’s getting a little better; well my voice still sounds like shit; yeah, still hurts but not too bad?; Yay, I can talk! While he is all talk of Home this, My-Mom’s-New-Kitty’s-So-Cute that, Brothers! Sisters! Nephews! Childhood Friends!

I got to know him a little better in these 2.5 weeks apart. No visa versa. I got to know his entire family knew about me. Got to know that he really missed me and wanted me to know that. Began to suspect we were not on the same page. Didn’t know, but strongly suspected. Until he came back. Then I knew. Knew he was much more into everything than I was. Realized I didn’t like that. Knew that when I had missed him it was for all the wrong reasons. Began to suspect the end was swift approaching and I would be the one to end it. Didn’t know, but suspected.

Then came Halloween.

(to be continued. It’s taking me forever to finish this entry! But it wont be 2 weeks again, promise!)

TIMING. As anyone dealing with IF knows, infertility takes away all ability to plan or control the a

TIMING.

As anyone dealing with IF knows, infertility takes away all ability to plan or control the act of having children. People might think that IVF represents the most control possible – i.e. you know when you’ll be doing the retrieval and transfer (roughly), and can plan around it – however, there are so many factors which negate that control and ability to plan. First of all, there are insurance approvals, and the bloodwork and other tests required beforehand – these things could take weeks or even months. For some people, money also becomes a factor, and procedures must be put on hold while you save money. Then, you have to take into consideration whether (and how) you’ll respond to the medication – will you be stimming for days? weeks? Finally, after everything is complete, there’s the 2WW (two week wait), when you wait to find out whether or not you are pregnant. And the piece with the LEAST control POSSIBLE? After all of that, it may not have worked, you won’t be pregnant, and you will have gone through all these steps for nothing. You then have to somehow find the strength to move forward, and try to forget about all the plans you had made for 9 months from now.

All this to say, that there is really no point in trying to “plan” the perfect time to have a baby. Now that I’ve received insurance approvals and feel like we are actually moving forward, I’m doing what all IF patients do…counting months. I had previously done the 9 month addition problem, starting from the target of mid-January, which would give us a due date of early- to mid-October. Great, right?! However, I’ve also just realized that that means that I’d be 7 months pregnant in early August, just too pregnant to travel to our big company sales meeting.

I’ve recently started pursuing a local sales job in my company (not my cup of tea really, but required in order to get promoted to the job I really want), under the theory that if this next IVF doesn’t work, I’ll want something to keep busy with, and if it does, sales would actually provide me with a lot of flexibility. If I need to puke all morning and go on campus in the afternoon, I can. I can work around doctor’s appointments and take naps. Seems like a win/win. I’ve submitted my name for two local positions that should be opening up soon – one rep is retiring, and one is hoping to come back inside (as an editor)…but for now, more waiting.

So now I’m trying to decide – do I postpone our next IVF to February, so that I’m only 6 months pregnant in August, not 7? Or do I move forward ASAP in case this next round doesn’t work, again? Then again, if we end up transferring two and have twins, I probably won’t be able to fly at 6 months anyways, so maybe I should just plan on not being at the meeting and move forward as planned? And on the other hand, when will this sales opportunity materialize anyways? Will the timing work out perfectly enough that I’ll have to be interviewing while on meds for our next cycle? And maybe I won’t even get the job, in which case I wouldn’t want to postpone our next cycle! UGH!!! Someone save me from myself…!
