I think we’ve all seen and read and heard of a lot of horror lately. Sometimes, in the middle of the night and at the end of the year, we need to hold on a little tighter to what we believe in and what we hold dear.

I am a Nichiren Buddhist like Tina. Sometimes we need to hold on to ourselves as well as to each other. There is nothing more valuable and affirming than being here at this moment as a human being. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor. Your precious life is all that really matters, and those of your loved ones.

Hang on to what you’ve got. Make something better out of your life.

In 1983, Tina Turner jump-started her career when she released a version of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.”  It entered the British charts on this day that year and it’s success there revitalized her as a musical property in the U.S.

“Let’s Stay Together” was listed as the 60th great song of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.  “Let’s Stay Together” was a #1 hit for Mr. Green in 1972 and Ms. Turner’s version reached #1 on the soul and dance charts in the U.S. in 1983.  She later included it on her Private Dancer album.

While not a true cover as Al Green performs on this version, I thought I’d include this version from Late Night with David Letterman just because of the smoking all-star cast.

Året var 1984 och runt om i Sverige så fyllde den här låten dansgolven på fredags- och lördagskvällarna. Den tillhör en exklusiv skara i så måtto att jag faktiskt tycker den är bra än idag. De flesta floorfillers tröttnade man nämligen på om man stod i ett DJ-bås nämnda kvällar och det enda folket tjatade om var att man skulle spela dessa låtar. Har ett riktigt hatobjekt när det kommer till såna låtar och det är Tina Turners What’s Love Got To Do With It. Den fick man nöta ganska hårt på Statt i Västervik där jag stod och vände skivor 2-3 kvällar i veckan under ett par år i början på 80-talet.

Föredrog då att spela på andra ställen där musiken var lite mer dansinriktad mot att behöva nöta radiohits. Men samtidigt så var det ju bra pengar för dessa fasta spelningar plus att man kunde ha sina skivlådor på plats å bara behövde knata ner till Statt ett par timmar, göra sitt jobb och sen gå hem å sova. Inte så glamoröst kanske och även om det var lite tradigt långa stunder så var det ju ändå kul.

Asevera la leyenda que sólo ha existido alguien capaz de contar hasta el infinito… y lo hizo dos veces.  Un tipo tan duro que a base de nombrarlo convirtió el último programa en el más fuerte, con las canciones más enérgicas y con las nominaciones más largas y tensas que os podáis imaginar. Lo que tampoco podréis adivinar es qué demonios tiene que ver el del sombrero vaquero con el Rock ‘n’ Roll, pero para eso tenéis ahí abajo cierto enlace, para que lo descubráis cuando os apetezca, sin prisas.

Y entre tanta patada voladora, los peores chistes y la mejor música, cómo no: Chuck Berry, Aerosmith, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Kim Carnes, Ryan Adams y más.  No te lo pierdas y si lo haces ten mucho cuidado. Chuck Norris no perdona y en estos momentos podría estar detrás de ti.

The intro to Mad Max 2 has the same directional feel as the first and it rules.
The rest of the movie is straight S&M but sweet in its own bizarro Tina turner way.

Metafóricamente, claro está, el Rocksound ardió con el bolazo de la banda de San Diego Lady Dottie and The Diamonds. Fue uno de esos conciertos que se recordarán entre lo mejor del año, como lo fueron también el de los Chesterfield Kings an Apolo o  el de Jim Jones Revue en Sidecar. Grupos capaces de poneer patas arriba el local a ritmo de rhythm’n'blues, soul y rock’n'roll.

Lady Dottie es una negra de Alabama de casi sesenta años, poseedora de toda la herencia musica de sus antepasados, con un chorro de voz y una presencia escénica apabullante. Leí que hace muchos años se trasladó a California a currar de cocinera en un bar y un dia entabló amistad con un teclista local, un tal Joe Guevara. Éste le presentó a unos colegas (todos  ellos de una generación inferior) y juntos formaron una banda con las virtudes de los clásicos y que este año debuta en vivo en Europa y con un directo que, por lo presenciado ayer, ganará adeptos para futuras giras.

La banda recuerda mucho a otros grandes de la escena californiana underground (de San Diego o San Francisco, no recuerdo), The Bellrays, también con negra al frente (Lisa Kekula) y directo incendiario, aunque éstos últimos tienen un poso punk y hardcore que no habita en la música de Lady Dottie and The Diamonds. Tanto es así que incluso se marcaron una versión de Highway to Hell, como hace años escuché a los Bellrays en una de sus actuaciones en Barcelona. Aunque debo decir que, si bien la versión de Proud Mary es casi previsible y demasiado clásica (revisitan la versión de Tina Turner), el cover en vivo del oscuro Glenn Danzig, Mother, resulta demoledor.

Is Janet Jackson, fake, tired & boring?

She had me going for a moment; I thought she was going to do something different and new, than came “Make Me,” it is hot but nothing new.  Reminds me of a Tina Turner type return sort of except Tina has an adult fan base and sings about real issues, Janet is still running after little kids.  I hate to say it but I am too mature for the kiddy crap.  The little kid in an adult body refuses to grow up and the people who made her what she is are grown up already, can we address single parenting, black on black crime and the screwed up world in need of love?  Sorry Janet but you are no PYT these days maybe Rihanna or Beyonce can still pass as a PTY, but you are older and an over the hill or motherhood?  I mean what do you see in the morning before makeup?  Get real!  Blow my mind with something other than sex!   And how can I not mention Alicia a true PYT?

Are you fake and tired and boring and Jermaine’s charity case; but on the real side, I understand you are spoiled and fell in-love with the glamour and now you are a prostitute for tracks?  Did not mean that but it needed to be said!  Being real I understand you do not want people to know that you are a sucker for love loser, except you fell from grace because you forgot how you got there and betrayed a trust.  The people who made you, you turned your back on, but thank the Lord for Michael’s success after death, sad as it is I am sure you will get your allowance. 

My niece said you are ugly, I said no she is just a little over the hill, then again you are no Tina Turner she is pretty for her age, and you are just aged!  Too old and fat to dance anymore, almost fell at the Grammy’s and there is nothing special about your voice so welcome to the club called has-been’s. 

So why did I love you, because you were fine, I do not think so, the only thing you have on common with Halle Barry is you are both cookies, if you know what I mean?  Because you were rich, but the trust you betrayed and everything you got you were given.  Your youth is long gone.  So why did I love you Janet?  Oh that is a secret!  And now I care less!  Like Michael said, “This is it.”  It is too late and what we do not know we will never know.

Attention holiday shoppers, ’80s nostalgists, and feminist music geeks! Debbie Harry, Joan Jett, and Cyndi Lauper went Barbie for Mattel’s Ladies of the ’80s collection. Apparently this was announced late last month, but I didn’t hear about it until checking Caryn Rose’s Twitter feed last night.

So, as with most things, I’m a bit ambivalent about this collection. For one, it’s hard for me to imagine pre-pubescent playing with these dolls. Furthermore, with the collection’s bent toward ’80s nostalgia, there’s a good chance that girls today don’t know who these rockin’ ladies are (though I hope today’s parents are exposing their children to this music — I know many of the campers at GRCA this summer knew who Debbie, Joan, and Cyndi were when I taught the music history workshops with my friend Kristen). 

I also take issue with how the women’s features have been homogenized to look more like Barbie. While this seems appropriate for Harry, as she has delicate features and was very slender during her days with Blondie, I’d appreciate it if Lauper was curvier and maintained her multi-colored mane. Jett’s costuming is fine, but I’d like her mullet to be more pronounced. Also, get the lady a leather jacket, please. And maybe the rest of The Runaways to reunite with her.

There’s also the issue of price. After a quick glance at Barbie’s Web site, it looks as though the average price for a doll is around $20. While hardly inexpensive for some folks, the retail value of the Ladies of the ’80s collection is $35 a rocker chick. Imagine how the price would go up if they decided to create and market ’80s-era girl bands, like The Go-Gos. 

Let’s not overlook race either. It looks as though Mattel only considered white women when selecting the female pop stars that best defined the era. Where’s Janet Jackson or Tina Turner, to name but two examples? Also, I’d like an expansion of the collection to include male musical artists. How about starting with Michael Jackson and Prince? 

And finally, there’s the issue of turning these women into dolls at all. Now, I was never much of a doll enthusiast as a girl. I understand that feminist and doll collector are not mutually exclusive identity markers (after all, “Lisa Vs. Malibu Stacy“ is my favorite Simpsons episode). Still, it’s hard for me to see the collection and not think of how this group of punk-y women and their individual contributions to popular music challenged how women could look and sound in media culture are being normalized and exploited for corporate gains.

But, as Erica Rand points out in her wonderful book, Barbie’s Queer Accessories, the cultural limitations of the doll are defined by the collector, not the corporation.

Here’s hoping that some collectors use their imaginations to maximize these doll’s progressive or even transgressive potential. With any luck, the dolls will have formed a band, cured cancer, come out, gone bald, or dyed green in some homes by the end of the holiday season.

The movie Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome has been a longtime GLBT favorite, but mostly for its S&M fashions and drag dominatrix iconography.

However, it also offers some important lessons for political activism in the reign of Obama the Timid and the Blue (Lap)Dog Democrats.

1. “Is it Tomorrow-morrow Land? No. Bartertown.” — If it is not clear by now, the Obama Administration is not going to usher in some Golden Age of equal rights for gays et al. In fact, now more than ever, American national politics is a post-apocalyptic nightmare (the apocalypse, of course, being the Bush Administration) wherein the naked exchange of money and votes is the true and only basis of social order.
2. “Embargo on! Main valve off!” — Like MasterBlaster’s demonstration for Auntie Entity, the despot and his/her enablers must be reminded periodically that even the freaks shoveling pig shit — in this case, a metaphor for gay money, votes and party activism –  can disrupt the system. Hoist with her own petard, as it were, Auntie avers, “MasterBlaster runs Bartertown.”
3. “Bust a deal, face the wheel” – In order to maintain the integrity of a social system, there must be significant consequence if promises are broken. Democratic politicians and black-tie enablers like HRC must be held accountable for not fulfilling their commitments. And the consequences should be genuinely punishing. Cut off their money. Don’t give them a platform for rhapshodizing empty promises (e.g. don’t invite non-performers to headline/speak). Banish the Democrats to the desert wearing a donkey’s head.
4. “Justice is only a roll of the dice. . .a flip of the coin, a turn of the wheel.” — Gay marriage proponents in California and Maine should take heart. Even after Max is betrayed and driven out of Bartertown, presumably to his death, he finds a tribe of young idealists who help him return and upend the corrupt and corrupting capitalist dystopia. The fight for justice can be arbitrary, but regardless of the outcome, it can be reversed.

It’s clear now that there never was a real window of opportunity for equal rights for GLBT Americans, only a trompe l’oeil version, and “gay leaders” have been foolishly paying the Democrats for the privilege of banging their own heads against that idyllic brick wall.

No more money. No more votes. No more rallies. No more canvassers and field workers. Just say NO — Make that, just say HELL NO — to anything to do with Democratic politics until voting records match rhetoric. Only then, in the immortal words of Master, “Lift embargo.”

“What’s love got to do with what, Doris?” you may ask.

“Pâté,” is my answer.

Tina Turner probably didn’t have pâté in mind when she belted out this song from her 1984 breakthrough album Private Dancer.

“So what’s the connection?” I hear you saying.

“My ex-husband’s fists,” is my answer.

Intrigued? Let me explain.

I used to consider my husband, Joe, a bit of a rough diamond. Now of course I can see him for what he was, which was a rough lump of coal. My Joe had a penchant for tattoos, when they were fashionable the first time around. In those days (and I’m going back to the fifties here) it was not unknown for men, especially those with high pain thresholds and low I.Q.s, to tattoo themselves. Joe was one such man; armed with a needle and a bottle of black India ink, one Saturday afternoon, he set to work on his knuckles.

LOVE. He started work on the left hand, using his steadier right hand to do the deed. I wasn’t happy about it but he seem pleased by the results and, give him his dues, Joe had nice handwriting and I’d say the finished result was close to a Garamond script.

Next came the right hand and, undeterred, Joe set about the task with considerable gusto… with his shakier left hand. It went wrong from the off. Joe made a real hash of the letter H but ploughed on with the A, T and E, resolving to return and make good the H as if these were pencil strokes he was dealing with. Return he did, only to make even more of a pig’s ear of it. The letter grew, and grew,  in size as he attempted to cover over his initial mistake. Eventually Joe decided to cut and run. Making the best of a bad job, trying to salvage something from this dreadful situation, Joe wrought the H into a passable P.

And so it was, LOVE AND PATE

If only I had a pound for every person who asked Joe for the story behind the tattoos on his hands! At times his efforts to justify his apparent tribute to this meat-based paste, were laughable. Too proud to admit the truth, he preferred to extol the virtues of this continental spread. Ironically Joe was always a meat and two potatoes man; he couldn’t abide foreign food and yet, he would have defended pâté to his dying breath.
