When I first developed an interest in photography just over a year ago, I used to upload the resulting full resolution images directly onto my Flickr photostream. At the time I didn’t really have a grasp of what was meant by the terms copyright, licensing or creative commons. If someone wanted to appreciate an image I’d posted & leave a comment, that was good enough for me.

After a few months, I put up some images taken on a hike in the Peak District & was contacted by someone enquiring as to how much it would cost to use the photos for commercial purposes. Not having a clue how to proceed, I turned to my fellow Flickr buddies for advice & contacted the person in question to try & establish how the images would be used & in how many places they would be reproduced so that I could provide them with a fair quote. Needless to say, I didn’t hear back from them & they removed their comments from the images & their Flickr account was deleted. Now, this could be because they were no longer interested in using my images, & I wouldn’t blame them if that was the case, or it could be because as soon as real money was mentioned they decided to help themselves to the full size digital images from my Flickr account.

From then on, resizing my images before uploading to the web became part of my work flow. By making the image smaller I hoped to retain enough quality so that people could appreciate the image online but low enough resolution to prove useless to anyone who wanted to reproduce it without my permission. At the time I discounted using a watermark or any other text overlay because I didn’t want anything to distract from the photo, plus I’ve seen some horrendous attempts of watermarking done badly.

Unfortunately, a couple of day ago I learnt of a friend who had one of their images stolen from their Flickr account & reproduced for commercial gain without permission. To make matters worse, he only came across the offending image completely by accident & the organisation carrying out the deed was a local media design company that really should know better. This problem is obviously rife & can effect anyone who innocently shares their images online with others. To that end, I’ve decided to bake in a text box to the images I post to the web &, if anything, it may even drive some traffic to my blog.

As I use Lightroom 2 to process my digital images, it appears that a plugin called Mogrify is the best solution to create watermarks, text overlays, frames, borders & many other cool things during export. PC users will also need to download & install ImageMagick as well to make the whole package work. I’ve posted an example of the text overlay I’m proposing to add to my images at the top of this post & any comments on whether you like it or how it could be improved would be much appreciated. Finally, for those who may be concerned that your images are being used elsewhere on the web without your knowledge, TinEye is a reverse image search engine that may be able to help you find them.

Finding similar images on the internet that have been stolen or copied can be hard to find as it is not like text which can be easily found with any search engine.

Some reasons that you may need to find similar images on the internet include finding copies of your images, finding the source of the images you have and finding other versions of the images you have.

In this post you will learn how to find similar images on the internet using a website called TinEye (http://tineye.com)

Step 1:
Go to TinEye (http://tineye.com)

Step 2:
Use the “Upload an image” box if you wish to browse for an image on your computer then click search or paste the URL of the image into the second box and click search if the image is hosted on a website.

Step 3:
A results page should appear after clicking on “Search”. The results page contains a list of all the possible matches. It includes links to the website and specific location of the image.

What is TinEye? TinEye is the first image search engine on the web to use image identification techn

What is TinEye?

TinEye is the first image search engine on the web to use image identification technology. Given an image to search for, TinEye tells you where and how that image appears all over the web—even if it has been modified.

Just as you are familiar with entering text in a regular search engine such as Google to find web pages that contain that text, TinEye lets you submit an image to find web pages that contain that image.
What kind of images can it find?

View the cool searches

How does TinEye work?

Every day TinEye’s spiders crawl the web for additional images. Using sophisticated pattern recognition algorithms, TinEye creates a unique and compact digital signature or ‘fingerprint’ for each one and adds it to the index.

When you want to find out where an image is being used on the web, you submit it to TinEye. The attributes of the image are analyzed instantly, and its fingerprint is compared to the fingerprint of every single image in the TinEye search index. The result? A detailed list of any websites using that image, worldwide.

Use TinEye to find out where and how an image appears on the web, even if it has been cropped or heavily modified.

There are many uses for TinEye, but here are a few:

Find out where an image came from, or get more information about it

Research or track the appearance of an image online

Find higher resolution versions of an image

Locate web pages that make use of an image you have created

Discover modified or edited versions of an image

So if you want to give it a try http://tineye.com/

Wow, 1/x. What an interesting function. Well here it is applied to cars. Math is so unintuitive half the time. I guess that’s what makes it interesting.

A logic problem our Concepts teacher gave us at the end of Friday’s lecture sounds surprisingly simple, but I still can’t figure out a solution (though I found one online that I haven’t read):

The 12 Pencil Problem (the solution I saw was for 12 Coins)

You have 12 identical looking pencils, but one of them is odd. It weighs more or less than the other pencils. Using a scale three times find out which pencil is odd and whether it weighs more or less than the other pencils. For clarification’s sake, if you weigh six pencils against six pencils and then remove one from each side that is considered two separate uses of the scale.

To get your brain thinking and to eliminate an easy case let’s take four pencils and weigh it against four other pencils. If they are even, then the last set of four contains the odd pencil. Take three from that set and weigh it against three normal pencils. If they are even weigh the last pencil from the odd set against a normal pencil. Otherwise, if it is heavier/lighter than the three normal pencils take any two pencils from that odd set and weigh them against each other. If they are even the last pencil in the odd set is heavierlighter than the other eleven. Else, having established that the odd pencil must be heavier/lighter from the 2nd weighing, the odd pencil of the two can be determined.

Another interesting link I’ve found is for the TinEye Reverse Image Search. You can take any image (like one that’s too small) and it searches for that same image (hopefully in higher resolution). The library it has is currently pretty limited, but it’s sort of that thing you figured we would’ve perfected by now since it seems pretty useful.

While the Internet has changed the way art is distributed, it has also changed how it is stolen. Thousands upon thousands of photos are uploaded every day to a plethora of hosting sites and personal websites/blogs. I think most of us have read enough stories by now to know that no image on the internet is safe from robbery, which is why, if we care about the safety of our photos we add a watermark and upload only reduced sizes. This doesn’t stop images from being stolen everyday. So what can we do about it?

TinEye is a reverse image search engine that looks for images online. Unlike Google Images or other such services that rely on keywords associated with the image file or found in the text close to it, TinEye can search for specific images based on their content. Feed it one of your photos and it will search for it online, even if it’s been cropped and resized! Now how cool is that?

TinEye is just starting out, so the websites it has crawled through looking for images are still limited in number—the internet is a big place! However, as time progresses and TinEye’s database grows, it can provide a valuable resource to those of us who care about where our photos are being used. In their FAQs they’ve stated the following:

We hope to introduce a paid feature which will allow you to upload or point to a group of images, and have TinEye check for matches on a regular basis, sending you updates when a match is found.

This makes perfect business sense, both for them and for professional photographers worried about their artistic rights being violated.

For now, TinEye offer a Plugin for Firefox and IE that allows you to click on any image on the web and see if it’s posted elsewhere. You can also just go to TinEye’s mainpage and point to a specific online address or upload an image and search from there.

TinEye is a reverse image search engine.

Rather than appending to my previous post I thought I’d add this update as a separate entry.

Following my discovery that the Daily Mail had used one of my images without permission, a number of threads kicked off. I asked folks via my blog, on Flickr and on Twitter, what their recommendations were – and I was overwhelmed by the response.

My initial response was to contact the Mail and ask for attribution, but I received no response to my email. I then decided to contact the picture desk, and ended up invoicing them for use of the image based on breach of license terms. I was prepared to take the matter further had the attribution (at minimum) not been provided. They finally added an attribution yesterday – although that’s via an overlay on the image, so it’s not ideal as it’s not searchable, and there’s no link back to my original content.

It has been pointed out to me that simply retrospectively billing them may lend some legitimacy to what they have done here… and let’s be honest, unless someone had spotted the reuse of my image I wouldn’t have known about it. They hadn’t linked to my Flickr page so I wouldn’t have found it via search. I suppose one answer would be the use of a tool like Tineye. More importantly though, I think it’s completely unacceptable to use CC-licensed (or even fully rights-reserved) material in this way and news sites and other services need to learn to respect these licenses. As a result, I’ve had some other friends make contact with the Mail at a high level to make this point.

On Sunday I became aware that another site had reprinted the Mail’s story, and included my image. This time, it was a news site in Brazil. My initial approach to this was to use Google Translate to try to find contact details, and I ended up filling in a form in English. I then asked for assistance on Twitter, and @mauricioswg was able to put me in touch with a Brazilian friend of his who also contacted the site on my behalf. At first they took the image down, but they still wanted to use it and after some discussion they now have the “correct” unmodified version of the image with attribution by agreement, thus fulfilling the terms of the license.

The upshot of all this? Whilst it can sometimes be hard to locate sites that are using your images – be vigilant as far as possible, and insist on your license. It’s your material.

I’d like to thank everyone who has offered support and provided help. My Twitter and other online and offline contacts have been invaluable. Social networks FTW!

This image is one of my favorites. Can anybody tell me who the artist is and where it’s from?

This image is one of my favorites. Can anybody tell me who the artist is and where it’s from?

I posed that question yesterday and got a very wonderful hint from Steve Penny. Check out TinEye at http://tineye.com/. It’s a reverse image search engine. You upload the image and TinEye provides a list of sites where that image is found.

To Try this…

1. go to http://tineye.com

2. Cut & paste this url:

http://technicalprojectservices.wordpress.com/files/2009/04/headcomingthrough.jpg

4. See the results. I got 23 pages of urls which contain this image, sorted (my option) from best to worst match. Wow.

Another cool search from Idee: http://www.ideeinc.com/videos/multicolour
