I’ve been planning these for months. I also made round ones, which are already done because cutting a circle with your handy circle cutter is way easier than cutting a weird ambiguous rectangle with rounded corners of indeterminate radius. Radii?

The best approach ended up being the most low-tech. I printed the images a little larger than the tin on glossy sticker paper, then traced the lid onto the back of the paper. Then I sketched new lines about an eighth of an inch inside those lines, and cut out the smaller rectangle with scissors. Worked like a charm. They all have [fairly] even margins of metal along the edges so that the resin can stick to both.

I’m totally stuck on that lace pattern! I’ve used it for the tins, for some experimental pieces of jewelry, for the signs I use at shows, the back of my senior show card…… We go way back, that piece and I. Not that far back; about a year ago, when my professor convinced me to try absorbent ground and I listened because I was desperate and was tired of having my soul crushed and devoured on a weekly basis. That particular piece came out very nicely but I didn’t like working with the ground. I’m going to take another whack at it at some point, but it struck me as being pretty uncontrollable and wasn’t too receptive to taking multiple layers of watercolor. (It looks like lace because it is actually a piece of lace, with watercolors on. The original painting was a mix of cobalt blue and burnt umber, which is magical. Other colors achieved with Photoshop.)

I am making my first shrines from gift card tins. I purchased them at Michaels for $1 to $1.29 each. These are the only tins I could find that are small enough. They used to have the tins that looked like the Altoids tins with the hinged lids which were $4.99 each. I cannot find them any more. The other tins were too big that are similar to these.

I used the scraps from the fabric cross I just made for my mother-in-law for Christmas. It is the Lady of Guadalupe fabric. I found it at Jo-Ann’s Fabrics. I used Mod Podge to attach it to the bottom of the tin. Sorry it is a blurred photo. Low light and flash made it even worse.

The lid was my next step. I used Mod Podge and glitter.

This is the lid when I finished with the spots. I used red, green, blue, and purple glitter. I am not sure what else I will do to the lid.

I will finish the project this week. I am making two of them in different tins. I am making one for my mother-in-law and the other for myself. I am planning to make more soon. I am having problems finding charms with crosses. I am having problems finding Catholic religious items….prayer cards without laminate. Also Lady of Guadalupe necklace charms are high.

I really need to start going to garage sales. I think that will be the place to find tins. I have some circular tins that I could use. I might think about how to use them. Shrines are usually small in nature. These might be a little big for them. One person used the old tackle boxes about the same size at the Underwood Center. I will think about it more. The tackle boxes were called Portable Religion Kits.

That night, Shaz and I raised 220 bucks just from asking every single person in the bar for some spare change. It was going good until we hit the corner table which was filled with some aboriginals. They were all nice except for the one, which took a creepy liking to me. He started rubbing my stomach, and told me to name my child Stevie, after him. He wanted to know how soon I was due.

I have a flat stomach. Ah.

At the pub before we raised 600 bucks.
A very successful night girls.

Oh man, these are awesome! Melinda made the best chocolate chunk muffins this morning.

You would think we had kids with the way she separated them out!

The only thing changed was that the recipe called for chocolate chips and she used chunks and also did not add the nuts.

I also recommend filling the tins all the way to the top, this way you get a nice round muffin top!

I used muffin liners but that is just your preference.

Click on the picture and it will take you to the recipe…

Enjoy them…(they are good!)

So last night, we worked at Build-A-Bear. We put on a FREE event where the kids hands were stamped as they came in, a free make ‘n take by us in the back and we are giving a way a door prize with some goodies in it. The picture to the right was also given away in the basket! Isn’t she just adorable? I love that So Saffron gingham paper! It’s just adorable!! Little pink accents and glitter just make her a girlie girl, doesn’t it?? These tins make great gifts and there is a tin class on my schedule for next month! It’s called, “Tin-king about Tins” We make 3 Tins that night – 1 is a DVD tin like this one… (but with a twist *wink*) another is a nugget tin (with a twist *wink*) and a circular tin – you guessed it – with a twist. If you can’t make the class, take it to go!

I want to share a few other pictures with you. The one of Donna behind the Make ‘n Take table was blurry *pout* so I can’t post that one! However, I can post the clearer pictures taken that night!

Here’s another TiNS by request. The color is sort of like glittering hard-boiled egg yolk, a sort of dusty yellow- but not dark enough to be mustard yellow. It’s called The Sweet Beast. This one is a hard color to pull off, especially on Asian skin, but I guess TiNS decided they wanted to be the first company to corner the coveted “Glittering Egg Yolk” market.

The coverage on this was fair, it took 3 coats and two coats of Seche to even this one out.

But the look was a little stark, so I decided to do a 1970s vinyl floor tile inspired design. When I was a kid, we lived in a sort of “loaner house” while our house was being built, and the outside of the house was this sort of mustardy light yellowish color (minus the glitter, of course). There was something a little scary about the house- there was a weedy backyard and some downed power lines that I was sure would electrocute me if they had half a chance. There was some pretty groovy 70s earth tones vinyl floor tile in the house as well. It was sort of a decoration nightmare: Early 70s Budget. I think the kitchen wallpaper had stagecoaches on it. The house is long since gone and has been turned into a parking lot.

So here’s my Ode to #810 New Haven Road:

I used Konad Wine Red special polish for this, and it rocks. It’s translucent so the sparkles show through, but the coverage is great. Sorry I forgot the plate number- it’s got a lot of cool geometric designs on it.

The Patchwork Harmony blog is also well worth a look – it made an appearance in last Saturday’s Guardian in a piece about hobby blogs that have been turned into successful businesses.
I chewed a lot of Bazooka Joe Bubble Gum when I was a kid, typically when playing baseball. Kids always liked to see how many pieces they could chew at once. I’m pretty sure that on some occasions I had up to five pieces in my mouth. Images from here and here.

Hello all. Today’s color is not a franken but it is pretty spectacular. The brand is TiNS (yes, written like that) and can only be found in Japan as far as I know. I will start frankening after my airconditioner arrives- right now, my franken-polish is drying on the pallette really fast and getting clumpy. That’s summer in Asia for ya, I guess. In winter, I can take my time but summer is a race to get the polish on!

The TiNS people decided to name their polishes in English, despite being Japanese, and every single color has a “The” in front of it. This one is “The Immediately Sexy.” I’m sure they meant to be chic and all sophisticated, but the names always make me laugh. My current favorite is “The Sweet Beast.” Whaaat?

Anyway, here it is: warm deep purple with deep purple glitter and some sparse silver chunkies. The finish is totally smooth after 1 coat of no-name clear topcoat. I imagine it’d be dazzling with Seche!

I realize that I don’t have a large number of readers. But to those who do, I ask, Where do your shuttles live? Do you keep them in a tin? Or is a box or a bag more your style? Maybe you just shove them in a drawer.

I know there are people out there who collect vintage shuttles, kept nicely in display cases. I’m not talking about those. I’m talking about your workhorses, the shuttles that you use on a regular basis. Where do you keep them?

For years I kept my shuttles and other tatting supplies in a square tin, circa 1970’s. The size was perfect for keeping all my supplies, plus a large ball of crochet cotton. Even the Victorian street scene design seemed to be ideal for this craft. And when tatting fell by the wayside for me (it’s sad but true), this tin kept everything nice and clean for me until I rediscovered how much I loved it.

But once I rediscovered tatting, I also discovered for the first time, websites that sold thread. The years of being satisfied with plain white crochet cotton bought at Frank’s were over. Soon I owned red and blue, gold, and (gasp!) black thread. And to my joy… they came in different sizes! So needless to say, I now have way too much thread and supplies to fit in this little square tin.

More recently I’ve been keeping my shuttles and other tatting supplies in a little tin Ziggy lunchbox. Not only is it very portable, it’s down right cute! I get almost as many comments on the lunchbox as I do on my tatting. I’ve been wondering, though, if I should start using something a little larger and more sophisticated. I know, I know, WHAT could be more sophisticated than a Ziggy lunchbox???

Well, now I have this roll-up travel case that was a pressie from the folks at Similac, and it would make a cool tatting case. It has a large compartment for a few balls of thread, and large pockets. See, it pays to have a baby.

Now I just have to find a place for my thread to live. LOL!

Just a fraction of my tatting thread stash
