Skeletons [2009] <- Download

READ: 20 Watts’ exclusive interview with Siren opener Tiny Masters of Today
VIEW: 20 Watts’ festival photo gallery, under the jump

Life doesn’t get much better than listening to free live music on a blazing hot summer’s day while chowing down on some cheap, sub-par hot dogs. To all those who don’t reside in the New York area or just couldn’t make it out to Coney Island on Saturday, let’s just say we’re very sorry you missed out.

Luckily for you, however, we’ve compiled a list of the best bands that graced the stages by the boardwalk this weekend. And when they play in your area, you better not miss them. Highlights of the day ran the gamut from fifteen-year-olds to the veteran ’90s indie-rockers that make up Built to Spill. Two types of shows permeated Siren this year: those driven by gimmicks and those driven by musicianship. The best acts melded the two strains together and struck a balance.

Tiny Masters of Today, made up of fifteen-year-old Ivan and his thirteen-year-old sister Ada (with an unnamed drummer), opened up the day for the audience at Siren.

There wasn’t much of a crowd yet when they started, but considering these kids are much younger than most readers of this blog and played at the same stage and on the same day as Built to Spill and Japandroids, they held their own remarkably well. Ada even went so far as to amicably explain that the “President” referenced in one of their songs was George W. Bush, not Barack Obama. With short song lengths and smatterings of political lyrics, it’s ironic that they played some of the purest punk rock of the day despite being born twenty years after the genre first surfaced.

Despite the heat, Japandroids rocked out like a coked-up White Stripes

Speaking of Japandroids, if there were any band at Siren with too much pent-up energy, it would be this duo. Playing garage rock like a coked-up, bastardized version of the White Stripes, Japandroids murdered their set, pulled it from the grave, and kicked it in the face like so many of the beach balls floating around the stage and crowd. Japandroids offered a warning before starting, with guitarist Brian King commenting on how much room he had to move around on the stage and how he felt like “the f**kin’ Stones” as a result.

Japandroids played one of the most dynamic, talented sets at Siren, and indeed, seemed to love doing it. When drummer David Prowse wiped his forehead with a towel after 20 minutes of nearly nonstop frenetic drumming, King chastised him for his weakness: “The f**kin’ towel? Really?”

A Place to Bury Strangers, a performance rife with psychedelic noise rock overdriven to its finest heights, featured the lead guitarist and singer, Oliver Ackermann playing on a busted-up old white Fender Jazzmaster. Spectators surely wondered how this guitar came to be so mistreated, even as Ackermann’s strap loosened mid-song. They were instructed about halfway into the set. A Place to Bury Strangers are known as “the loudest band in New York” for a reason, and when Ackermann whipped off his Fender and sent it twirling around his body in a reverb-heavy frenzy, it only hearkened back to YouTube videos of classic pioneers of instrument destruction. Actually, watching the dude whip out another busted-up Jazzmaster, (this one black) was almost better than watching him snap his guitar strings in the first place. From the way the bassist and drummer barely batted eyelashes, APTBS probably pulls this stuff all the time.

The Raveonettes, Built to Spill, Bear Hands, Frightened Rabbit and Micachu and the Shapes also all performed incredibly well. The Raveonettes began and ended strongly, playing their hit “Aly, Walk With Me,” among other mesmerizing songs. Built to Spill, the veterans that they are, knew how to put on a great live show after seventeen years of playing together. Bear Hands kept the masses well-entertained for their set and even brought some friends of theirs onstage to join in the fun and dance without their socks and shoes on. Micachu and the Shapes entranced the crowd with both their skill and unique and unpredictable song structures.

A surprising number of listeners don’t realize that a band’s live show represents more than half the battle in the music industry. At a large free festival like Siren, then, the all-important question becomes: What casual spectator is going to stick around and stay interested, even after the set?

These bands managed that and more. Good for them and great for us.

Entao vai no my space e confere Big Stick e Two Dead Soldiers. Tem ate remixagem do CSS (que eu particularmente nao gosto mas que ficou bem bom). Enquanto isso, fica aqui com o clipe fofo de Skeletons. Mais uma das maravilhas do Brooklyn.

Editors Pick #140: Best Sets at Siren

20 Watts picks/predicts the best sets at Coney Island's Siren Festival As phenomenal as it is to

20 Watts picks/predicts the best sets at Coney Island's Siren Festival

As phenomenal as it is to see a bunch of awesome bands together, music festivals do have their drawbacks. There are crowds, for starters — huge, unpredictable, often inebriated masses, which will crowd you out from the front of the stage, crowd surf at totally inappropriate times, and elbow you in the face when you’re trying to take a photograph (…not that I speak from experience, or anything). There’s the food, which is always overpriced and almost always inedible, depending on how much you’ve had to drink. Then there’s the sweltering heat, the sunburn, the tall dude who had to stand RIGHT in front of you, the gaggle of 16-year-olds giggling at the rear.

But the biggest problem of all, by far, is choosing which bands to see when several sets occur at the same, or almost the same, times.

Coney Island’s Siren Festival is kind enough to stagger their sets. But in case you don’t want to sprint from stage to stage, or (God forbid) take a breather between the hours of 1:00 and 8:00, these are my personal Siren picks.

1:00 — Tiny Masters of Today [Main Stage]

Adolescent duo with serious industry cred splat out bratty punk anthems. Are they awesome because they’re barely in high school, or because the chorus on “K.I.D.S.” is so fun to jam out to? I’m not entirely sure, but David Bowie’s called their work “genius.”

2:00 — Micachu & The Shapes [Main Stage]

Unconventional and often inaccessible “pop,” played on customized or homemade instruments. One part garage, one part glitch, and several parts awesome.

3:00 — Japandroids [Main Stage]

Simple, straightforward, no frills garage rock that could have come straight from the 1990s. Something that sounds this fun on an album must be really incredible live.

4:00 — Frightened Rabbit [Main Stage]

You’ll find Frightened Rabbit somewhere between emo and a Glasglow pub, singing hyper-masculine ballads in a vulnerable brogue. Last year’s Midnight Organ Fight made many critics’ best of ‘08 lists, and the opening one minute of “Music Now” made my life, pretty much. On several occasions.

5:30 — A Place To Bury Strangers [Stillwell Stage]

Shoegaze that looks outward? Now there’s a novel concept. A Place To Bury Strangers are sonically huge and rumored to have a mind-blowing live show.

6:00 — The Raveonettes [Main Stage]

Probably my top pick of the day (seriously — see these two), The Raveonettes hail from Denmark and play dark, noise-drenched, electric noise pop in the tradition of their self-avowed influences, The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine.

7:30 — Built to Spill [Main Stage]

Perhaps the Siren Festival themselves put it best: “Built to Spill is an institution.” With a storied 17-year career behind them, these indie rock giants are worth any festival crowd or sweltering temperature — you can take my word on it.

Kings County Cinema Society presents a double header: Beastie Boys’ Awesome! I F*ckin Shot That! at 6p followed by the Wu-Tang Clan’s Rock The Bells at 8:30p. In Oct 2004, the Beasties played a sold-out homecoming gig. To celebrate, Adam Yauch distributed video cameras among fans which resulted in a stylistic and experimental fan-made concert doc set to cleanly recorded thumping sound. Awesome! is directed by Yauch under his nom de film Nathaniel Hornblower. Rock The Bells is an unblinking look at what it took to reunite famed Wu-Tang Clan for the Rock The Bells hip-hop festival in the summer of 2004. Infamous for their no-shows on tour, RZA, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon the Chef, U-God, Ghostface Killah, & Method Man were brought together despite near-constant chaos and mismanagement. Rock The Bells is directed by Casey Suchan & Denis Hennelly. DJ empanadamn will be playing Beastie Boys & Wu-Tang cuts including appearances, collaborations, original breaks & samples.

Every Monday, we’re going to keep you guys updated with 20 Watts’ weekly concert picks in New York this summer and Syracuse during the school year. There are always awesome shows in the city, and most of this week’s are the best kind — the free ones.

1) Dirty Projectors, Williamsburg Waterfront at 2 p.m. on July 19th [FREE!]

The Dirty Projectors are one of the hottest indie rock bands this summer and this concert is especially interesting, considering it’s one of their first since suffering a car crash in Michigan last months. The opening acts will be Magnolia Electric Co. and White Denim.

2) M83’s Anthony Gonzalez, World Financial Center Winter Garden at 9 p.m. on July 14th [FREE!]

No it’s not the whole band, but one member of M83 is better than none. Anthony Gonzalez will accompany a production by video artist Janet Biggs — the shoegazing at this concert should be well worth the trip downtown.

3) Village Voice’s Siren Music Festival, Coney Island from 12 to 9 p.m. on July 18th [FREE!]

We’re most excited for Japandroids, Micachu and the Shapes, The Raveonettes and the Tiny Masters of Today. There also a bunch of other under-the-radar groups if you check out the websitel.

4) Wavves and Real Estate, Bowery Ballroom at 7 p.m. on July 15th [$13 in advance and $15 at the door]

This is the riskiest show of them all. Wavves is coming off a meltdown in Barcelona, Spain — so the show could suck, or you could witness Wavves’ reawakening. Real Estate, however, is worth checking out.

****UPDATE: According to Brooklyn Vegan, Wavves frontman Nathan Williams broke his wrist skateboarding recently but is still scheduled to play the Bowery Ballroom show. That’s bad ass.****

The band is comprised of 13 and 15 year old siblings Ada and Ivan along with assorted elders on the skins. The band has achieved minor popularity and have had a video featured on Subterranean, despite having received a poor review from Pitchfork. The review essentially stated some might find this good or impressive because it is coming from a couple of youngsters and not on artistic merit. I happen to like this song and a few others from the record, though I can see many people not enjoying it at all. Any thoughts?

welp, back in new york, better start blogging again. hello to all the readers who have left since I

welp, back in new york, better start blogging again. hello to all the readers who have left since I stopped updating because there’s nothing to do in indiana except drink and play risk

so, grand return to form, let’s start with show reviews!

actually wait first: I’m posting a job! the very first nox5 job posting! my camera, which was kind of a shit point-and-shoot deal, just died on me, so instead of moping and looking at my feet, I will use this as a sign. therefore, I’ve decided to hire someone with a nicer camera, like a DSLR deal, to take pictures at events for nox5. the pay is your admission to events. free shows, just to snap pictures! wow! if interested, send me an email at nmaloneyiii (at) gmail (dot) com.

okay plug over, look here:

art brut, demander, the picture @ mercury lounge, june 1

I have recently learned that if a website confirms that a show is indeed sold out, it is just not so.

I travelled to the mercury lounge to see if I could get a scalped ticket for day one of art brut’s 5 day residency. I actually knew about the shows for a while–when I was doing some nyc show lusting back home in indiana, I saw they were doing this kind of ridiculous residency (only ridiculous because they’re a pretty popular bound and headline mostly, and those who do residencies are usually singer-songwriter types who mumble between songs and have a Local Following), so I was definitely on board. I did not know, however, that merc lounge was selling 5-day passes for each day for $50, which I definitely would have snagged (single passes were $18, so that’s a savings of like $40).

so I arrive, looking all sheepish because there’s nobody standing outside, no shady characters wearing rain jackets even though it’s clear out. so I walk up to the door, brazenly, BRAZENLY, and say “yes hello any more tickets available,” even though the sign right next to me reads “ART BRUT SOLD OUT” in bold, confrontational letters. the guy looks at the sign, looks inside, and goes, “yeah we got tickets, hold up” and ducks inside to talk to the ticket girl.

see my thought is that when a sign says SOLD OUT, it means that a venue is stuffed to capacity and any more folks inside would be against fire code, but what it really means is “hey look how populaaaar this shoooow is~” and it’s just free advertising. if you take nothing away from this review, just know that you can probably get into a “sold out” show regardless of its sold-outedness.

drink prices at the mercury lounge are still outrageous, with PBR @ $4 per plastic cup and whiskey drinks a respectable $6 per. I got a whiskey soda (the classy concert-goer special) and headed to the show area, which was remarkably sparse considering hold sold out the show was.

it took a while for the picture to get up the initiative to play, but eventually they did and it was alright. they play that sort of unremarkable keyboard-driven pop rock thing that keane does, or travis, or the walkmen. it’d sound alright shopping for clothes, but it’s not something I’d necessarily seek out. they did have one or two awesome moments where the drummer (who was large, fuck yeah large drummers) would really just beat the hell out of his drums, but it was ruined when the guitarist wryly added “ooh, loud drums.” like, shut up, douchebag, you’re undercarding art brut, of course we like loud drums.

next up were demander, who were kind of cool, mostly the guitars.. you know, I hate to say this, but the singer was kind of like amy lee of evanescence, which was a turn off. I think maybe that’s entirely a thing with me and girl singers–if they try to be really pretty when then sing, it sounds bizarre and unpalatable. what I’m trying to say is that the girl from demander sings really well, if you like classical singing styles, you’d probably be down. but it was okay! I still had fun. franz nicolay of the hold steady showed up and played with them, and his moustache is always pleasant to view.

and then: art brut took the stage with the force of a harrier jet, launching into “alcoholics unanimous.” it was awesome–the band was in top form, sounding exactly like frank black recorded them on their new LP “art brut vs. satan”, crisp and direct, like a hammer to the face. eddie argos was in typical boozy fashion, vamping around the stage and muttering new lyrics halfway through a song. I was waiting for a “such and such band, top of the pops!” montage that he usually does during “bad weekend”, but they never played it. c’est la vie, though, since they ripped through a bunch of my favorite tracks: modern art, good weekend, my little brother, direct hit. and I shouted nearly all the words, got lost in the mosh pit, and pretty much had the best party ever. I drank too much and didn’t feel sick afterwards. on the way out, I thanked freddy in kind of an out-of-breath “you were brilliant I will try to make it to every show” way.

and I caught the F train as it was arriving in the station! take THAT, chance. art brut is now the concert to beat of the year.

alright didn’t do anything tuesday, moving to wednesday

wednesday I did some job hunting, because drinks and shows in this town don’t come cheap (unless they’re free, which they are infrequently). I was trying to find a waiter gig, because I like tips and serving, but here’s the kicker: if you don’t have bartender-like drink knowledge, you are not wanted as a server. sample interview:

interviewer: name three single malt scotches.
nox5: oh um.. johnny walker…? *rotates hands*
interviewer: how is your wine knowledge?
nox5: pretty basic, I can tell you what food goes with what color
interviewer: what do you know about winemaking regions in france?
nox5: dude come on

and so on. so maybe I’ll get a job at a busboy or end up working fast food and that will give me “5 years nyc fine dining experience” or “extensive champagne knowledge”

anyhow, left that interview, walking on 7th outside the rockerfeller center, who should I stumble along but art brut! walking around! wow! I was bummed out and when I saw them I got excited and shouted out as they passed “art brut! top of the pops!” they did a nervous little laugh and a wave and I was walking around like I had just hugged a kitten and then it hits me: oh my god, that was very rude. I mean they’re just guys (and one lady) walking around, taking in the city, not being a rock band. maybe they don’t want to be hounded in public by fans in ties. I felt like a total prick.

I resolved to go to the show once more to apologize!

art brut, tiny masters of today @ mercury lounge, june 3

oh noooo, the show is sold ouuuuuttt, what will I doooooo~

now positive I can get in, I ask the guy at the door “hey tickets aren’t sold out, are they?”

“yeah, sorry.”

:000

devastation. I can see ian and jasper of art brut at their merch table, but I can’t reach them to apologize. and no scalpers sitting around for me to buy a ticket. I wait outside of the venue, hoping that someone will come along with extra tickets. I miss the first band, sorry guys, couldn’t get in. people keep entering with tickets. I ask the doorman if, hey maybe people didn’t show up, right? any chance I can get in? he sort of looks around and points to a dude smoking. “try that guy,” he says.

I try that guy, and he has a bunch of tickets. I don’t understand why he just showed up, he must have been watching the show inside. I buy a ticket for actual admission price (no scalping!?) and head inside.

okay, I’m in. busy bar. I buy a courage drink and nervously walk to the merch booth:

nox5: so, hey
jasper: hello!
nox5: I, uh, I saw you guys today..
jasper: ?
nox5: outside the rockerfeller center on 7th and I shouted–
jasper: oh, you’re the “art brut top of the pops guy!”
nox5: yeah, I’m s–
jasper: that was awesome! we were talking about it all day!
nox5: oh jeez really? I felt badly about it, I thought it was rude..
jasper: no, it was cool! it had never happened before.
nox5: what really?
jasper: (turning) ian, it’s–
ian: oh is that the “top of the pops” guy?
jasper: yes!
ian: oh that was awesome, thank you!
*we do a handshake*
nox5: wow this is not what I expected whatsoever! btw you guys did great on monday

so yeah, that pretty much made the night fr me, compounded on the fact that two excellent acts played after that.

tiny masters of today, that preteen brother-sister band from brooklyn had a bit of trouble setting up, lots of distortion, but I mean what are you going to do they’re 12 and 13, give ‘em a break. I don’t know what was the deal with the drummer but she seemed much much older, like 26, but whatevs. they played a good mix of bang bang boom cake and the new skeletons, which I quite like. tiny masters play an barebones show with absolutely no stage banter, primarily because I think that they haven’t developed those skills yet. at the end of the show, ivan said “okay that’s it” and stood there awkwardly. that’s part of the charm, I guess–kids playing music because they like it, not because they want to be famous rock stars. they decided to end the show with a cover of “youth against fascism” by sonic youth, which was actually pretty deftly handled. atta boy and girl and babysitter, TMOT.

art brut came on stage and did a show much like monday, with high intensity and I had fun, but significantly less fun for two reasons: 1.) I was stuffed in the back where nobody was having fun, and 2.) there were two hipster fucking douchebags standing behind me making fun of me jumping up and down and singing along. I mean, fuck! how often does art brut cross the pond and play? last time was in 2007 supporting it’s a bit complicated. eventually I turned around and said “hey you fucking hipster scum, why don’t you cross arms elsewhere,” but that only made it worse. I tried to ignore them, but they definitely got in the way.

but you know what? I can take them. it’s me and art brut vs. pretension. and this time, I think we won.

Brooklyn is seriously booming with legit listen-worthy bands. Tiny Masters of Today first got noticed in 2007 when they released their first album featuring Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and even got the thumbs up from David Bowie. This young punk duo consists of siblings Ivan (15) and Ada (13). They are releasing their second record, Skeletons and this is the video from the single that came out just a few days ago. BUT LIKE HOW CUTE ARE THEY?!

If you already know about these guys, bravo. I’m stunned. As the brother and sister duo Tiny Masters of Today, Ada and Ivan are 12 and 15-years-old, and these kids rock this hard? WTF?! They’re barely entering puberty and they can already rock harder than Sum 41.

What’s more, they’re releasing a new album called “Skeletons” due out on June 6th. They’re working with Kimya Dawson and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I’m so damn jealous of these twerps, I can’t even remember what I was doing with myself at their age. I feel so unaccomplished.

Sure, their sound sounds remotely Nickelodeon, and their video is so 80s…looking like an old Ramones video, but they’re way better than any other preteen band I know of. Now I know one. Congrats, Tiny Masters of Today. Congrats.

At first glance, Tiny Masters of Today sounds like a typically gimmicky band name. Then you find out that, at 13 and 15, its two founding members are relatively pretty tiny. And with their rambunctious, fun-loving brand of punk, they’re well on their way to being masterful, too.

20 Watts’ Jett Wells caught up with Ivan, Ada and Jackson in between sets at the Siren Music Festival in Coney Island on Saturday. Tiny Masters were one of our most-anticipated sets — and after talking to this hilarious trio, it’s easy to see why.

20W: How long have you guys been playing?

Ivan: Me and (Ada) have been doing this for three or four years, and Jackson has been playing with us for the last two years.

20W: You guys are 13, 15 and 19 years old, respectively. How did you all get to this point?

Ivan: I picked up the guitar when I was 8 or 7 years old.

Ada: I started playing keyboard when I was 8 years old and we just started writing songs and playing music for fun.

20W: Like in your parents’ garage?

Ivan: No, the basement.

20W: At what point did you start playing live shows?

Ivan: The first show we did in 2007 was written up in Newsweek Magazine, and we got a lot of attention from that. And I don’t know. There was the buzz from MySpace too.

20W: How many bands do you know that are like you guys at this level?

Jackson: Not a lot. It’s awesome. I’ve been coming to Siren for the past five or six years. It’s awesome to play here, and especially on such a nice day like today.

20W to Jackson: Are you from Brooklyn like Ada and Ivan? How do you know these guys?

Jackson: These guys? I don’t really know them that well. (He laughs sarcastically). Ivan’s a friend of a friend from another band. They contacted me on MySpace.

Ivan: We just play a lot of the same parties.

20W: Do you guys go to school or not?

Ivan: Jackson graduated already, but Ada and I still go to school. I’m going to be a sophomore in high school and Ada’s in the 8th grade.

20W: How do you guys balance school and work?

Ada: We are pretty careful trying to only perform on school holidays. It’s pretty hard though.

Ivan: Yeah, we try to miss as little school as possible.

20W: Yeah, but it still happens, right?

Ivan: Yeah, but only like five days a year.

20W: In your first album, Bang Bang Boom Cake, you worked with big names like Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Kimya Dawson. How did that happen?

Ivan: Our former drummer Russell (Simins from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) was just really connected. He was just a New York guy and knew everyone, including Karen.

20W: Well, that’s pretty awesome. What was it like working with her?

Ivan: It was pretty cool. It was like woah!

Jackson: Were you excited? I was excited.

Ivan: Karen’s really nice. She’s my bro.

Ada: Your bro?

Ivan: My bro!

20W: So what do all of your parents think of this band?

Ivan: I mean, they’re supportive.

Jackson: Yeah. I used to play in another band, and they liked that one, because I played with my brother. They also like this one, because they like these two (pointing at Ada and Ivan). They’re parents. My mom isn’t too fond of Ada.

Ada: Your mom loves me!

20W: What’s it like playing big shows like this? Is it daunting at all?

Ivan: Usually we play small shows, but have done some big shows before, like Lollapalooza last summer. We also did a festival with Paramore.

Jackson: That was pretty weird.

20W: What are the pressures of being such a young band playing alongside famous veteran groups?

Ivan: I don’t even really consider myself that skilled of a guitar player. Sometimes it’s really nerve-racking, like when we played with the Raconteurs. Jack White is a pretty good guitar player.

20W: What are your favorite parts of being rock stars?

Jackson: The food.

Ada: I like traveling. I don’t like the actually traveling part, but I like being there.

Jackson: Yeah, so food, traveling and experiencing the cultures.

20W: What’s it like being rock stars and not being able to party like rock stars?

Ivan: In England, Jackson can party. He parties hard there.

Jackson: That’s true, so I don’t even remember it. It’s pretty much like a big family trip. We just watch movies in the van with the parents. There’s great family loving.

20W: Do kids at your schools know about the band?

Ada: Some of my friends are here, but the rest don’t really care. It’s not like a big deal.

Ivan: Yeah, but 12-year-olds haven’t heard of us.

20W: Where do you guys see yourselves in ten years?

Ivan: It’s hard to tell. It’s so far in the future. I have to finish high school and I’d like to go to college. We’re going to keep it on a day-to-day basis.
