On 15 Feb. 2012, Anhui Annada Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. (Anhui Annada) released a brief financial

On 15 Feb. 2012, Anhui Annada Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. (Anhui Annada) released a brief financial report for last year, according to CCM’s February issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

The company’s good performance was reflected by the substantial growth in revenue last year, thanks to the higher TiO2 sales volume and selling prices compared with those of the previous year. Its operating margin increased to 7.9% in 2011 from 4.9% in 2010, mainly due to high TiO2 prices driven up by cost increase and strong demand, as well as larger proportion of the sales volume of high value-added rutile TiO2 inthe total sales volume.

Anhui Annada continued to optimize its product structure in 2011. As a result, it produced 38,000 tonnes of rutile TiO2 in2011, accounting for 65.5% of its total TiO2 output in 2011 (the proportion was 60.9% in 2010). The adjustment resulted from higher profitability of rutile TiO2 compared with that of anatase TiO2. In fact, sources said the prices of rutile TiO2 increase faster and larger than those of anatase TiO2 these years. Generally speaking, Anhui Annada achieved its production target last year—it expected to produce 15,000 tonnes of anatase TiO2 and 40,000 tonnes of rutile TiO2 in2011.

Besides, the company did well in cost management. For one thing, it sourced titanium feedstock from both home and abroad. For another thing, it made appropriate changes in the raw material structure, such as stopping or reducing the use of titanium slag when the prices of titanium slag went too high or increased too fast.

The promising TiO2 industry has drawn people’s attention in recent years. As the largest titanium dioxide production country since 2009,Chinais considered to be one of the most important markets in the world.China’s TiO2 market has experienced tremendous changes in 2011.

Reviewing the TiO2 price inChina, price of titanium dioxide has witnessed an abnormal increase in H1 2011. According to CCM International’s survey, from August 2010 to July 2011, the average price of domestic rutile has increased from USD2,109/t to USD3,549/t, with the growth rate of 68.35%, and the average price of domestic anatase has increased from USD1,570/t to USD3,064/t, with the growth rate of 95.12%. But the price began to drop rapidly after July 2011. Has the price rebounded recently? What elements caused the price fluctuation of TiO2 in2011?

China’s titanium dioxide export has been rebounding fast since 2009, thanks to the recovering global economy. The export volume has enjoyed a fast growth during the first nine months of 2011. What are import and export details in 2011? How will the China TiO2 market go in 2012? What is the future demand trend of TiO2 in2012?

On 23 Dec. 2011, Pangang Group Steel Vanadium and Titanium Co., Ltd. (PGVT) announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary Titanium Industrial Corporation of Pangang Group (Pangang Titanium) will add capital and expand shares in Panzhihua Dongfang Titanium Co., Ltd. (Dongfang Titanium) , according to CCM’s January issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

The expansion of capital and stocks aims to support Dongfang Titanium’s new sulfate rutile TiO2 project, which will expand the company’s TiO2 production capacity from 40,000t/a to 100,000t/a. The new project needs an investment of USD71.4 million in an estimate. (Please refer to TiO2 China Monthly Report Vol.4 Issue 06.11).

By 31 March 2011, Pangang Titanium held 49% of Dongfang Titanium’s total shares with an investment of USD15.6million, and Miyi County An’ning Iron & Titanium Co., Ltd. (the An’ning Company) held the left 51% with an investment of USD16.2 millon.

After discussion with Dongfang Titanium, Pangang Titanium decides to acquire another 97 million shares with capital increase (no more than USD27.0 million), and the An’ning Company wants to acquire another 3 million shares. After the completion of the expansion of capital and stocks, Pangang is expected to hold 65% of Dongfang Titanium’s total shares, while the An’ning Company will hold the left 35%. As a result, Dongfang Titanium will be absolutely held by Pangang Titanium.

Pangang Titanium’s move is in line with its purpose of strengthening its TiO2 business. By 2011, PGVT owns three subsidiaries for TiO2 production, namely Pangang Titanium, Dongfang Titanium and Chongqing Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. (Chongqing Titanium), with a total TiO2 production capacity of 100,000t/a rutile TiO2 and 20,000t/a anatase TiO2. In H1 2011, the rutile TiO2 output of the three companies are 11,000 tonnes,19,000 tonnes and 18,000 tonnes, respectively.

CCM International has published the sixth edition of the titanium dioxide series reports in November

CCM International has published the sixth edition of the titanium dioxide series reports in November 2011, namely Survey of Titanium Dioxide in China (The Sixth Edition).

Undoubtly, China is the biggest country both in titanium dioxide production and consumption. The output of titanium dioxide in China has been increasing rapidly in the past five years. From 2006 to 2010, the output has increased with CAGR of 12.57%. The titanium dioxide market in China has enjoyed fast development in recent years.

Nevertheless, along with tremendous growth in the past few years, the limitations are more and more obvious, coming from technology, product quality and environmental protection. Technology of chloride process in China is still poor and the core technology is monopolized by overseas enterprises. How do domestic enterprises develop the chloride process? In order to raise the product quality, what are they endeavoring to? As the pressure from environment becomes harder and harder, how do they handle their three waste treatment?

Thus, focusing on such spots, we have done broadly investigation and deeply analysis and tried to find out how Chinese enterprises overcome the obstacles and how the titanium dioxide industry will evolve in the near future. After a great deal of work, we have accumulated full-scale of information of the titanium dioxide industry and made some valuable conclusions. So by reading this report, you will come to know:

- Production situation of titanium dioxide in China
- Stocks supply of titanium dioxide in China
- Market situation of titanium dioxide in China
- Enterprises dynamics in China, 2009-2011
- Latest trend of Chinese titanium dioxide international trade, 2009-2011
- Policy & legislation in China
- Development of titanium dioxide industry in the future
- Development of chloride process
- Forecast on supply and demand of titanium dioxide in China, 2011-2015
- Investment opportunity in titanium dioxide industry

The sixth edition of the titanium dioxide series reports was published by CCM International recently

The sixth edition of the titanium dioxide series reports was published by CCM International recently. The new report, with the title Survey of Titanium Dioxide in China (The Sixth Edition) indicates thatChina’s titanium dioxide industry is expected to have a promising future.

After a rapid growth in the past few years,Chinahas become the biggest titanium dioxide production country since 2009. From 2006 to 2011, domestic titanium dioxide capacity has increased with CAGR of 9.84%. With lots of environment pollution caused by sulfate process in titanium dioxide production, Chinese government has set a series of policies to restrict the capacity expansion with sulfate process in 2011. And it is estimated that the capacity ofChina’s titanium dioxide will increase slowly in the coming 5 years.

China’s export volume has also enjoyed a fast development in the past. The export volume has increased nearly double from 2005 to 2010. AndChinahas been a titanium dioxide net exporter since 2010.

In addition,Chinais one of the largest consumers of titanium dioxide in the world. From 2006 to 2010, the apparent consumption of domestic titanium dioxide has witnessed an increasing trend with CAGR of 11.34%. The titanium dioxide is mainly consumed in coating, plastic and papermaking industries inChina. And in H1 2011, the consumption volume of titanium dioxide in these three fields accounts for about 81.5% of the total. It is estimated that the consumption volume of titanium dioxide inChinawould see a further growth.

More findings and details are in CCM International’s titanium dioxide report.
The latest issue of Titanium Dioxide China Monthly Report 1111 has been published by CCM Internation

The latest issue of Titanium Dioxide China Monthly Report 1111 has been published by CCM International on November 25, 2011. It indicates that Carpoly, the largest coating producer inChina, prepares for IPO to raise funds for coating capacity expansion.

Carpoly’s IPO projects include two projects from its subsidiary Guangdong Carpoly Scientific Materials Co., Ltd. (210,000 t/a coating production and its auxiliary projects, high performance coating R&D center construction project) and two projects from Carpoly (marketing network transformation & upgrade project, information system upgrade project).

Carpoly’s IPO operation meets the environmental protection requirements for IPO. Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) proclaimed the results of Carpoly’s IPO Environmental Protection Inspection (EPI) on 8 Nov. 2011.

According to MEP’s report, Carpoly consumed about eight thousand tonnes of TiO2 in2010, up 29% year on year. Once Carpoly gets listed, it is obvious that its capacity of coatings will further increase, which leads to larger consumption of TiO2.

You might discover more details in Titanium Dioxide China Monthly Report 1111 with the following headline news:

-Chinaencounters fading TiO2 export VS booming import in Sept. 2011.

-Sichuan Lomon and Shandong Dongjia both attempt IPO again, aiming at developing chloride TiO2.

-TiO2 multinationals benefit from higher selling prices, and manage to offset the impact of raw materical cost increase.

-Cristal plans to build a new titanium slag plant inSaudi Arabia, which will aggravate the already serious shortage of ilmenite.

-Iluka, Kenmare, Rio Tinto all get strong production of titanium feedstock in Q3 2011.

-Carpoly prepares for IPO to raise funds for coating capacity expansion.

-Dulux reinforces its position inChinaby absorbing Campelpaint.

-China’s TiO2 price decline goes on in Nov. 2011, with no sign of ending.

-Kronos sets off TiO2 price hike that will take effect on 1 Jan. 2011.

China’s largest coating producer Guangdong Carpoly Chemical Group Co., Ltd. (Carpoly) is preparing for IPO, according to CCM’s November issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

It expects to raise funds of USD108 million by IPO for new projects of its subsidiary Guangdong Carpoly Scientific Materials Co., Ltd. (Carpoly Scientific). The IPO projects include two projects from Carpoly Scientific (210,000 t/a coating production and its auxiliary projects, high performance coating R&D center construction project) and two projects from Carpoly (marketing network transformation & upgrade project, information system upgrade project).

On 8 Nov. 2011, the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) proclaims the results of Carpoly’s IPO Environmental Protection Inspection (EPI), which ranges over the period from 1 Jan. 2008 to 31 March 2011. After the inspection, the MEP decides that Carpoly’s operations can meet the environmental protection requirements for IPO.

By now, Carpoly has seven wholly-owned subsidiaries (including a second-level subsidiary). With coatings capacity expansions over these years, Carpoly has a growing demand for TiO2. According to MEP’s report, Carpoly consumed about eight thousand tonnes of TiO2 in2010, up 29% year on year. Once Carpoly gets listed, its capacity of coatings will further increase, which is bound to lead to larger consumption of TiO2.

In Oct. 2011,China’s manufacturing PMI fell back to 50.4%, with a great decline in import/ export order index and purchasing price index, and an increase in product inventory index. It indicates a relief of the inflation inChinaaccompanied by an adverse external economic environment.

Meanwhile,China’s CPI decreases for the third consecutive month and reaches 5.5%. In this case, Premier Wen Jiabao said on 25 Oct. the government would further fine-tune its macroeconomic policy by an appropriate degree at an appropriate time.

China’s listed companies are under the inspection of Environmental and Social Responsibility now, and the companies to be listed must pass the Environmental Impact Assessment first, according to the 12th Five Year National Environmental Protection Plan released by the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) on 9 Nov. 2011.Chinaaims to reduce its CO2 emission per GDP by 17% between 2011 and 2015.

In the TiO2 industry, Sichuan Lomon and Shandong Dongjia successively attempted IPO in Nov. 2011. In addition to the strict environmental protection requirements, they also face the challenge of TiO2 price decrease in domestic market that lasts for four months due to the weak demand.

A selection of “Top 10 Chinese TiO2 companies 2011″ was successfully carried out on 9 Oct. 2011. Sichuan Lomon, Shandong Dongjia, Henan Billions and seven other companies were in the top 10 list.

Aiming to provide a better understanding of domestic TiO2 companies and more cost-effective TiO2 products for coating companies, China Coating Purchase Net (www.icoat.cc), a famous coating medium inChina, hosted the event.

The result of the selection comes from three-month online poll and industrial survey on 37 candidates. It raises much attention among people because it is not only based on output and sales volume of each TiO2 company, but also on the popularity and cost performance of products, credit standing and development prospect of each company.

And it is a great opportunity for Chinese TiO2 producer to learn from each other’s advantage in the selection.

On 9 Oct. 2011, a selection of “Top 10 Chinese TiO2 companies 2011″ completed successful

On 9 Oct. 2011, a selection of “Top 10 Chinese TiO2 companies 2011″ completed successfully. Sichuan Lomon, Shandong Dongjia, Henan Billions and other seven companies were selected. The acknowledgment marked good competitive strength of each selected companies, according to CCM’s October issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

The selection is initiated and conducted by China Coating Purchase Net (www.icoat.cc), a famous coating medium inChina. It aims at providing better understanding of domestic TiO2 companies and more cost-effective TiO2 products for coating companies.

The result of the selection comes from three-month online poll and field survey on 37 candidates. The selection becomes worthy of note because it is not only based on output and sales volume of each TiO2 company, but also on the popularity and cost performance of products, credit standing and development prospect of each company.

ForChina’s TiO2 producers, to learn from each other in the selection is more important than the result.

According to the analysis by China Coating Purchase Net, domestic TiO2 market is unsaturated by now, but remarkable growth is stunted by the shortage of titanium feedstock, low investment in R&D, strict environmental protection policy, etc. Foreign TiO2 producers spend many efforts on improving product quality and developing new products, so it’s easy for them to occupyChina’s market, especially for high-end products.

Editor’s Note

Chinasaw some improvements in its economy last month. Its manufacturing PMI rose by 0.3% to51.2 inSept. 2011 compared with that in Aug. Meanwhile, its CPI growth rate fell to 6.1%, showing a slowdown in growth for the second consecutive month.

In Q3 2011,Chinasees a 9.1% year-on-year increase in GDP, which is lower than the growth rates of 9.5% in Q2 and 9.7% in Q1 this year. It reflectsChina’s economic growth has slowed down.

Domestic TiO2 prices slump in this month, with the mainstream prices for rutile TiO2 falling to USD2,830/t by mid-Oct. 2011.China’s TiO2 producers worry about the profit growth of TiO2 inQ4, though many remain high growth in Q3 2011.

By the end of Sept. 2011,Chinahas started building 9.86 million units of affordable housing, 98% of the amount planned for this year. In the building material industry, the architectural coating industry will continue to be the major beneficiary of these projects. However, the coating industry inChinahas entered an off-season now, which suggests the demand of TiO2 will be weaker.

CCM’s September issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report has been released on September 25, 2011, covering the latest news ofChina’s TiO2 industry.

Chinasees relatively stable economic growth under continuing high inflation. In August 2011,China’s CPI decreased to 6.2% year on year, while PMI increased by 0.2% to 50.9. What will be the influence onChina’s TiO2 industry?

Domestic TiO2 prices continue to decrease in September 2011, but the weak sales status changes little. The average price of rutile TiO2 drops to USD3,125/t (RMB20,000/t) by mid-September and may fall further later in this month. Will the price of TiO2 keep declining?

In order to promote the energy-saving and emission-reduction program, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) ofChinaissued Clean Production Technology Promotion Scheme (the Scheme) for five industries (including TiO2 industry and coating industry) on 16 August 2011. What’s the challenges and opportunities under the scheme?

In the coating market, traditional wall insulation coatings lose market share significantly, while nano-coatings spring up, in line with the advocacy of environmental protection. Meanwhile, Jotun COSCO starts the construction of a new marine coating project to meet the growing demand inChina. What is new inChina’s coating market?

All answers will be shared in CCM’s TiO2 China Monthly Report, main news in September issue include:

Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation Ultraviolet radiation can be divided into three regions: UVA (320–400 nm)

Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation

Ultraviolet radiation can be divided into three regions: UVA (320–400 nm), UVB(290–320 nm) and UVC (200–290 nm). Although UVC is the most damaging UV radiation, it is filtered out by the ozone layer in the stratosphere before reaching the earth’s surface. The radiation in the UVB region (partially filtered by ozone) can penetrate both the stratum corneum and the epidermis of human skin. It has
sufficient energy to cause damage, such as sunburn, to human skin. This is particularly true for fair-skinned individuals. The UVA radiation, which is unfiltered by ozone, has deeper penetration of human skin to the dermis; it, thereby, stimulates the formation of melanin and produces a tan, which acts as the first line of defense for the protection from sunburn. UVA radiation, therefore, is also called the “tanning region.” Although having considerably lower energy than UVB, UVA photons can cause delayed damages to the skin.

The fundamental function of a sunscreen is to serve as a filter that can prevent the penetration of ultraviolet radiation. The substances most commonly used in commercial sunscreen preparations include p-aminobenzoic acids (PABA), cinnamates, oxybenzone, salicylates, and metal oxides, such as TiO2 and ZnO. In addition to their ability to scatter sunlight, inorganic particles, such as TiO2, do
absorb strongly in the UVA and UVB regions.

Rutile and Anatase TiO2

In addition to its amorphous state, two of the most common crystalline forms of TiO2 are rutile and anatase. The two crystalline forms share many similarities, such as their physical appearance, refractive index, density, low toxicity, and high stability in the presence of strong acids and bases. As a physical blocker for sunlight, bot
crystalline forms would serve the purpose well. Their photochemical properties, however, are very different. TiO2 is a semiconductor. When a semiconductor particle absorbs light, it promotes an electron from its valence band to its conduction band, leading to a charge separation. In rutile TiO2, the charge separation is quickly diminished through a charge recombination within the particle and the energy is released as heat. This translates to a low photoactivity and an effective conversion of UV light into heat. As a result, any photoinduced reactions that can pose damage to the skin are avoided. The low photoactivity and its desirable UV absorption spectrum, which cover the entire erythemal curve make rutile TiO2 an ideal choice as UV blocker for sunscreen preparations.

For amorphous and anatase TiO2, the lifetime of the charge separation is much longer than that on a rutile particle. The electron and electron hole, therefore, have greater opportunity to undergo redox reactions on the surface; therefore, anatase has been extensively used for applications involving such electron transfer processes as
photocatalysis for environmental waste treatment and photovoltaic design for solar energy storage. Extensive reviews on these interesting topics are available. Due to their photoactivity, amorphous and anatase TiO2 are not suitable for sunscreen applications.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, found in everything from cosmetics to sunscreen to paint to v

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, found in everything from cosmetics to sunscreen to paint to vitamins, caused systemic genetic damage in mice, according to a comprehensive study conducted by researchers at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The TiO2 nanoparticles induced single- and double-strand DNA breaks and also caused chromosomal damage as well as inflammation, all of which increase the risk for cancer. The UCLA study is the first to show that the nanoparticles had such an effect, said Robert Schiestl, a professor of pathology, radiation oncology and environmental health sciences, a Jonsson Cancer Center scientist and the study’s senior author.

Once in the system, the TiO2 nanoparticles accumulate in different organs because the body has no way to eliminate them. And because they are so small, they can go everywhere in the body, even through cells, and may interfere with sub-cellular mechanisms.

The study appeared the week of November 16 2009 in the journal Cancer Research.

In the past, these TiO2 nanoparticles have been considered non-toxic in that they do not incite a chemical reaction. Instead, it is surface interactions that the nanoparticles have within their environment- in this case inside a mouse — that is causing the genetic damage, Schiestl said. They wander throughout the body causing oxidative stress, which can lead to cell death.

It is a novel mechanism of toxicity, a physicochemical reaction, these particles cause in comparison to regular chemical toxins, which are the usual subjects of toxicological research, Schiestl said.

“The novel principle is that titanium by itself is chemically inert. However, when the particles become progressively smaller, their surface, in turn, becomes progressively bigger and in the interaction of this surface with the environment oxidative stress is induced,” he said. “This is the first comprehensive study of titanium dioxide nanoparticle-induced genotoxicity, possibly caused by a secondary mechanism associated with inflammation and/or oxidative stress. Given the growing use of these nanoparticles, these findings raise concern about potential health hazards associated with exposure.”

The manufacture of TiO2 nanoparticles is a huge industry, Schiestl said, with production at about two million tons per year. In addition to paint, cosmetics, sunscreen and vitamins, the nanoparticles can be found in toothpaste, food colorants, nutritional supplements and hundreds of other personal care products.

“It could be that a certain portion of spontaneous cancers are due to this exposure,” Schiestl said. “And some people could be more sensitive to nanoparticles exposure than others. “I believe the toxicity of these nanoparticles has not been studied enough.”

Schiestl said the nanoparticles cannot go through skin, so he recommends using a lotion sunscreen. Spray-on sunscreens could potentially be inhaled and the nanoparticles can become lodged in the lungs.

The mice were exposed to the TiO2 nanoparticles in their drinking water and began showing genetic damage on the fifth day. The human equivalent is about 1.6 years of exposure to the nanoparticles in a manufacturing environment. However, Schiestl said, it’s not clear if regular, everyday exposure in humans increases exponentially as continued contact with the nanoparticles occurs over time.

“These data suggest that we should be concerned about a potential risk of cancer or genetic disorders especially for people occupationally exposed to high concentrations of titanium dioxide nanoparticles, and that it might be prudent to limit their ingestion through non-essential drug additives, food colors, etc.,” the study states.

Next, Schiestl and his team will study exposure to the nanoparticles in mice that are deficient in DNA repair, to perhaps help find a way to predict which people might be particularly sensitive to them.

Batteries could get a boost from an Oak Ridge National Laboratory discovery that increases power, en

Batteries could get a boost from an Oak Ridge National Laboratory discovery that increases power, energy density and safety while dramatically reducing charge time.

A team led by Hansan Liu, Gilbert Brown and Parans Paranthaman of the Department of Energy lab’s Chemical Sciences Division found that titanium dioxide creates a highly desirable material that increases surface area and features a fast charge-discharge capability for lithium ion batteries. Compared to conventional technologies, the differences in charge time and capacity are striking.

“We can charge our battery to 50 percent of full capacity in six minutes while the traditional graphite-based lithium ion battery would be just 10 percent charged at the same current,” Liu said.

Compared to commercial lithium titanate material, the ORNL compound also boasts a higher capacity – 256 vs. 165 milliampere hour per gram – and a sloping discharge voltage that is good for controlling state of charge. This characteristic combined with the fact oxide materials are extremely safe and long-lasting alternatives to commercial graphite make it well-suited for hybrid electric vehicles and other high-power applications.

The results, recently published in Advanced Materials, could also have special significance for applications in stationary energy storage systems for solar and wind power, and for smart grids. The titanium dioxide with a bronze polymorph also has the advantage of being potentially inexpensive, according to Liu.

At the heart of the breakthrough is the novel architecture of titanium dioxide, named mesoporous TiO2-B microspheres, which features channels and pores that allow for unimpeded flow of ions with a capacitor-like mechanism. Consequently, a lithium ion battery that substitutes TiO2-B for the graphite electrode charges and discharges quickly.

“Theoretical studies have uncovered that this pseudocapacitive behavior originates from the unique sites and energetics of lithium absorption and diffusion in TiO2-B structure,” the authors write in their paper, titled “Mesoporous TiO2-B Microspheres with Superior Rate Performance for Lithium Ion Batteries.”

Paranthaman noted that the microsphere shape of the material allows for traditional electrode fabrication and creates compact electrode layers. He also observed, however, that the production process of this material is complex and involves many steps, so more research remains to determine whether it is scalable.

Other authors of the paper are Zhonghe Bi, Xiao-Guang Sun, Raymond Unocic and Sheng Dai. The research was supported by DOE’s Office of Science, ORNL’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development program, and ORNL’s SHaRE User Facility, which is sponsored by Basic Energy Sciences.

HI-TECH denim jeans that use nanotechnology to stop air pollution are to go on show at the London Design Festival, which starts later this week.

Given recent reports that show London’s air to be among the filthiest in Europe, a clothing solution could be just up London’s street. Especially if that street is Oxford Street or any other area with a high number of pedestrians.

“A significant reduction in the level of air borne pollutants in a large city such as London could be achieved if, for every metre of pavement width, 30 people wearing Catalytic Clothes walked past each minute,” say developers Catalytic Clothing.

The jeans, or any other clothing fitted with the new technology, “harness the power of a photocatalyst to break down air borne pollutants,” by using light as an energy source.

“When the light shines on the photocatalyst, the electrons in the material are rearranged and they become more reactive,” adds the Catalytic Clothing website.

Further reactions then “cause pollutants to break down into non-harmful chemicals”.

Any material can become a pollution eater with the addition of a sort-of conditioner containing the photocatalysts, but different materials need different catalyst set-ups.

For the purposes of demonstration, jeans fit the bill since, “there are more pairs of jeans in existence than there are people on the earth,” as the Catalytic Clothing people put it.

The nanotech denim – developed by a team at Sheffield University and another at the London College of Fashion – has been formed into a display called The Field of Jeans for the London Design Festival, which runs from 17-25 September.

TiO2 China Monthly Report was released by CCM yesterday. The top story of this issue is Anhui Annada

TiO2 China Monthly Report was released by CCM yesterday. The top story of this issue is Anhui Annada tripling its profit because of higher TiO2 prices and optimized product structures.

The revenue of Anhui Annada Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. (Annada) was USD56 million, up by 42.70% over the same period last year. Annada’s profit reached USD6 million, nearly doubled that of H1 2010. The high revenue and profit growth are mainly due to higher TiO2 selling price and optimized product structures.

With the global economic recovery and strong demand of TiO2, Annada benefited from the rising feedstock price and the increasing product price. The gross profit margin of both anatase TiO2 and rutile TiO2 increased by 4.42% year on year.

What’s more, the company’s product structure was further optimized. The proportion of high-profit rutile TiO2 sales in total revenue increased from 64.54% in H1 2011 to 80.90%, while the proportion of anatase TiO2 sales in total revenue decreased from 35.46% in H1 2010 to 19.10%.

Annada expects its revenue and profit continue to grow in the second half of 2011, and it estimates year-on-year profit increase will be in the range of 190% to 240% in the first nine months of 2011.

CCM’s August issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report has come out recently, showing thatChina’s TiO2 price declines in August 2011 due to weak demand, but it is expected to rebound in future months.

Domestic TiO2 price started to decrease in August 2011, asChina’s TiO2 producers have been depressed by the weak demand in June and July. For example, in late July, Sichuan Lomon decreased price of its rutile TiO2 sold to some large customers, with the markdown in the range of USD78/t to USD156/t. The company said it had no way but to decrease price to gain market share as it had too much inventory.

However, it is estimated that TiO2 price might rebound in future months, which is an exciting news for TiO2 producers. There are two reasons to explain it below. Firstly, the inventories are limited relatively to the demand at home and abroad, so the degree of the price decrease is small and the period is short. Secondly, the motive force from high titanium feedstock cost and possible demand recovery in following months will drive up TiO2 price.

The following highlights are covered in the August issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report:

-China’s TiO2 average export price exceeds average import price for the first time.

-Anhui Goldstar will succeed Shandong Dongjia as CNNC Huayuan’s trustee.

-Jiangxi Tianguang’s first phase TiO2 project meets related requirements.

-Anhui Annada triples its profit on higher TiO2 prices and optimized product structure.

-China’s titanium feedstock import volume rebounds in June 2011.

-China’s TiO2 price declines in August 2011 due to weak demand
