♥ a tiny teaspoon of coffee powder dissolved in a little hot water, into a chocolate cake batter, makes the chocolate cake richer and tastier. You don’t want too much – not enough to notice, just enough to enhance the cocoa’s flavour.

I saw this idea online awhile ago and have been using it ever since. Very simple idea to keep your linen cupboard tidy: store each sheet set inside one of its pillowcases. That way, you dont have to dig around looking for matching pillowcases and each set stacks up neatly

Teething baby? I’ve got one, and she isn’t happy about it! I’ve tried a wide variety of teethers, and her favourite to date is this organic cotton bonbon teether. Room temperature or frozen, she will sit quietly and chew on the knots. The only problem with it is it is stuffed with wool, and I’m allergic to wool. Just touching it for a second is enough to make my eyes water, my fingers itch, and the little bits of wool get in the air and I’m a sneezing mess! She loves those darn knots so much, so I made my own wool free version:

Most moms of young ones have an absurd amount of wash cloths, and as dirty as my kids get, I always have tons of extras on hand, so I used them to make this super easy teether.

Fold opposite corners in…

tie a second tight knot and you are done!

I wet the cloth, and place it in a baggy in the freezer. My daughter loves chewing on the frozen ends and knots! Keeps her quiet, and soothes those sore swollen gums.

Happy teething :)

If you want to create a fun, memorable vacation that your family will remember for years to come, you must do your homework before you go. There is a lot of planning that goes into a WDW vacation. A Disney vacation is not cheap and the last thing you want to happen is to have a miserable time. (Read my post on my first WDW trip.)

If you are staying on Disney property (which I highly recommend) check out which resorts would be ideal for your family. Things to keep in mind are price, location, and activities that the resort has to offer.

After deciding on which parks you plan to visit, make a list of the rides and attractions you would like to see. Find out which rides are the busiest and ride them first. Or get a FastPass for one popular ride and while you wait for your FastPass return time, ride another popular ride. Look into which restaurants best suit your family’s ideal menu.

One website that I recommend is AllEars.net. You can find just about any kind of information you are searching for. One thing I enjoy about this site is that they post all the restaurant menus from each resort, park, and Downtown Disney. This makes it easier for me to find the restaurants that we would enjoy and ones to steer clear of. Also search and follow other people’s blogs. There is a wealth of information at your fingertips that wasn’t available a few years ago.

It may take longer to plan your vacation, but in the end, it will be well worth it.

At first this tip might not seem frugal, but it is! If you have air conditioning in your home, using

At first this tip might not seem frugal, but it is! If you have air conditioning in your home, using your oven while it is running is counter-productive. You end up heating the house a bit, which makes your a/c work harder, which in turn increases your bill! This is why we try to avoid using the oven during the summer months, unless there is a cool morning and we have the windows open.

Avoiding using the oven is very difficult for me, I love to bake, and roast, and bake, and bake, and bake. Not being able to bake yummy desserts in the summer is just not fair. As nice as ice cream or a no bake cheese cake is, I would much rather have a warm gooey brownie or chocolate chip cookie. Roasting or baking food, I can live without for a few months, since most of it gets replaced with yummy bbq which we aren’t able to have all year round.

After using my slow cooker yesterday for some buffalo chicken, I wondered about slow cooker desserts. Here are some awesome looking ones that I found:

Triple Chocolate Peanut Butter Pudding Cake

Chocolate Bread Pudding

Slow Cooker Berry Cobbler

I actually ventured out with the kids this morning to pick up some chocolate chips and peanut butter chips to make that first recipe. The toddler helped assemble it all, and the house smelled amazing while it cooked for 2 hours in the slow cooker. Unfortunately it didn’t taste very good. Well, my husband enjoyed it, and so did the toddler, but I didn’t care for it. Next time I would add more cocoa powder and skip the peanut butter chips, since they just made the entire thing taste like peanut butter instead of chocolate.

Have you ever made a dessert in your slow cooker? I’d love to hear about it, or any other tips you have!

If you really want to save money; learn to NOT be brand loyal. Purchasing whatever brand is on sale/

If you really want to save money; learn to NOT be brand loyal. Purchasing whatever brand is on sale/cheapest might not seem like a big savings, but when you do it for all your grocery items, that few cents on each item adds up to a great deal of savings each week. Our family is brand loyal in three cases: toothpaste, toilet paper, and shave gel. My teeth do not feel clean unless I brush them with Arm and Hammer toothpaste, and I prefer Charmin toilet paper. As for the shave gel; every single time I buy the store brand, regardless of what store, it doesn’t dispense properly! When these items go on sale, we load up like crazy! Charmin is almost always on sale somewhere, plus you can find coupons all the time. Major brands of shave gel are often on sale, so I will buy a couple at a time so that we always have an extra one on hand. Arm and Hammer toothpaste is hardly ever on sale and coupons are non-existent, though I think the regular price has come down at Walmart recently.

Just give the store brands a try; they are usually cheaper, and sometimes even better! We usually shop at stores that sell Presidents Choice brand, and many of their products are better than the national version! Cereal, granola bars, condiments like ketchup and mustard, baby food, diapers (LOVE the PC green diapers for those times we do use disposables) all these things we prefer the store brand to the national brand. I will even buy Compliments brand on some things if I shop at FreshCo, though I have bought some items and didn’t care for them.

As with any grocery shopping you do, always check the price per unit (written smaller on the price tag on the shelf). This lets you compare items of different sizes to see which is cheaper per unit. Sometimes, that giant 2L bottle of store brand ketchup isn’t the better deal :)

I prefer to cook our meals from scratch for many reasons:

1. I am a stay at home mom, meaning I am here, and have time to plan and prep meals for my family.

2. We live off a single income, and have a tight budget, and cooking from scratch is cheaper.

3. I would much rather make rice and pasta dish from scratch, than buying the packaged ones that are full of junk.

4. I LOVE to cook. I love trying new recipes and using new gadgets and seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they enjoy what I made.

Yes each week I try new recipes, and post my meal plans, but those plans don’t show what I am buying, and what I have on hand. If I had to buy every single ingredient for each recipe I was making that week, we wouldn’t be able to live on such a tight budget. There are lots of ingredients that I always have in stock, usually purchased on sale or in bulk. And there are sauces and spices that we use all the time too.

clipart from Clipartmojo.com

Here is a list of staples that we always have on hand, and what I use them for.

Baking:

all-purpose flour

whole wheat flour

white sugar

brown sugar

icing sugar

cocoa

baking powder

baking soda

vanilla extract

eggs

butter

shortening

With these always on hand, I feel like my baking is free! I can whip up cookies or brownies, and it doesn’t feel like it costs anything because all I am using are ingredients that are always in the cupboard.

Spices (just a few favourites):

garlic powder

onion powder

chili powder

cumin

rosemary

Italian spice blend

It would take too long to list each spice we have in the cupboard. Pretty much any spice you can think of, we have. I love using new ones, and adding to our little collection.

Sauces:

plum sauce

ketchup

soya sauce

various hot sauces

various bbq sauces

Other general cooking essentials:

Dried pasta – in various shapes

Minute rice – used in casseroles

Long grain rice – usually make this when we are eating the rice plain

Cream of Mushroom soup – used in cream sauces and casseroles

Canned beans – red kidney beans and black beans: can whip up a quick chili

Canned tomatoes – used in lots of pasta dishes and chili

Canned and frozen veggies – for weeks when there just aren’t any good deals on fresh veggies

Onions & garlic – I always have these in the draw, and they get added to pretty much every dish I make.

Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers – I buy these every week regardless of the menu plan. This way I can always throw together a simple salad for lunch or to have with dinner.

With these always on hand, I know that there will always be something to make for dinner. What staples do you keep in your pantry?
