PRE-FESTIVAL EVENTS –

The Damhsa Festival had been in discussions with Susan & Travis Finch of a Canadian/Ukrainian dance group, Kupalo, since 2007. This group originally intended to come to Ireland for 3 weeks and asked if we had any contacts with other festivals where they could get the opportunity to perform either before or after Damhsa Fest 09. We made contact with the organisers of the Munster Fleadh Ceol and arranged for Kupalo to take part in the Fleadh’s festive activities on Saturday 19th July.

Kupalo flew in to Dublin Airport on the Thursday before the festival. The 40 strong group of 29 dancers and 11 helpers & parents did some sightseeing in Dublin. On Saturday July 18th, the Munster Fleadh Ceoil in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary hosted Kupalo. They performed on the gig rig on the Saturday night of the weekend festival, where they gave an entertaining 90 minute display of Ukrainian dancing to a large crowd.

On Sunday July 19th, the Kupalo group visited Cashel, attended the Bru Bru Comhaltas concert and. were invited to perform for the crowd after the show. From here they made their way to Killarney, Co. Kerry, where the group stayed on Sunday and Monday night and travelled the Ring of Kerry during the day on the Monday.

Well done to David Morgan, Manager of the Dome at Semple Stadium, for staging the Tommy Fleming concert on Friday, November 13th. It certainly was not an unlucky choice of date. The Dome proved to be an excellent venue and we look forward to more concerts and shows being staged there.
MAP SHOWING LOCATION OF EVERY GAA CLUB IN THE WORLD

As part of the 125 year celebrations for the greatest amateur sporting organisation on earth, Baker Security and Networks, which is responsible for managing the GAA’s email system, would like to make a presentation to the GAA museum. As befits a new era for the Association, this presentation will be of the form of an electronic map showing the location of every GAA club in the world. The map will have more than the club location however, we hope it will form part of the living history of the organisation and to make it possible they need your help. They need you to tell them about your club, its past, present and heroes. Put your name at the end of the piece you write, or get some help and put all your names down, and you will forever become part of the history of the GAA. Later on we hope you will be able to upload photographs and other interesting details about your club. To submit your information go to the following website https://sites.google.com/a/gaa.ie/put-your-club-on-the-map/ and follow the instructions. All clubs will have received an email advising them of this very interesting venture.

TIPPERARY GAA SCENE BY COUNTY PRO GER RYAN COUNTY FINALS Loughmore Castleiney’s late 1

TIPPERARY GAA SCENE

BY COUNTY PRO GER RYAN

COUNTY FINALS

Loughmore Castleiney’s late 1 point victory over Arravale Rovers in the County Minor A Hurling final narrowly prevented a clean sweep by the West Division of the 3 county finals played at the weekend. Nonetheless it was a good weekend for clubs from the West with Aherlow winning the County Junior A hurling title at the expense of Nenagh Éire Óg and Knockavilla Kickhams winning the Junior A football title with an injury time goal to secure a one point victory over Shannon Rovers. Congratulations to the three victorious clubs. Weather interfered with fixtures at the weekend and both hurling finals had to be postponed form Saturday to Sunday. Well done to those responsible for the venues at Templetuohy, Templemore and Boherlahan for ensuring their grounds were playable despite the appalling weather.

Willie Eviston captained Loughmore Castleiney to their first minor A title since 2002 and their 4th in all. Their previous winning captains were Derek Bourke (2002), Peter Brennan (1979) and Michael McGrath (1976). Sunday’s victory was Aherlow’s first Junior A hurling title. Cathal Dillon captained the team. Knockavilla Kickhams won their first Junior A football title since 1992 on Friday night and their third title in all.

MUNSTER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Good luck to the Carrick Swans Intermediate Footballers and the Aherlow Junior Hurlers who will both be in action in the Munster Club Championships this weekend. Aherlow will play Tourin / Glen Rovers of Waterford in Sean Treacy Park, Tipperary Town at 2pm on Sunday November 15th with Cathal McAllister of Cork as referee. Carrick Swans will travel to Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney to play Spa of Kerry also at 2pm on Sunday with Michael Meade of Limerick taking charge of the whistle.

TOMMY FLEMING CONCERT IN SEMPLE STADIUM DOME

Tommy Fleming is performing at the Dome at Semple Stadium on this Friday November 13th to help support the Tipperary Senior Hurlers.
- Ticket Master ( www.ticketmaster.ie)

- Lár na Páirce, Thurles. (0504 22702)

- Heart Beat City, Thurles

- Golden Discs, O’Connell Mal, Clonmel

- Roxi Records, Dooradoyle, Co. Limerick

- Empire Music, O’Connell St., Co. Limerick

This will be the first major live show in the Dome and hopefully it will be the start of many such events in this excellent venue.

INTERPROVINCIAL FOOTBALL

Hard luck to Munster on their defeat by Ulster in the Interprovincial Football final played in Ruislip London last weekend. Tipperary’s Paul Fitzgerald (Fethard) played in goals and Robbie Costigan (Cahir) was also on the panel and came on as a substitute at half time.

SCÓR NA NÓG

Preparations for Scór na nÓg 2009/2010 are beginning across the county. It is hoped that this year more clubs from the South and West divisions will take part. Scór offers a wonderful night’s cultural entertainment for the whole family with competitions in figure and set dancing, solo and group singing, recitation, instrumental music, quiz and novelty act. If you or members of your club would like to take part in Scór na nÓg this year, please contact Aoife on 086-1761984.

Coiste Scór Thiobraid Árann AGM

The AGM of Tipperary Scór was held in Lár na Páirce on November 2nd 2009. In attendance were representatives from all 4 divisions in Tipperary. County Chairman Barry O’ Brien and County Secretary Tim Floyd were also present and both addressed the meeting.
OLD GAA E-MAIL SERVER

Earlier this year, the GAA introduced a new email system and as a consequence is winding down service on the old email server which will be fully decommissioned on Monday November 30th at 10:00am. In practical terms, from that date any GAA club or officer still using an e-mail address with an extension of @tipperary.gaa.ie will no longer be able to access their account and all e-mails on this account will no longer be accessible. Contact Tipperary GAA IT Officer Ed Donnelly at itofficer.tipperary@gaa.ie or 087-2055642 if you need more details.

This Tipperary woman looks like fun! She was definitely fashionable and trend conscious as demonstrated by her check suit and association with the very trendy pastime of cycling. Brian Griffin has written a comprehensive history of cycling in Ireland which also covers the gender issues surrounding the sport. Not everyone was keen on the independence and freedom that cycling gave women! Roger Vaughan’s website includes a selection of Victorian and Edwardian cycling photographs. The studio props are also great – note the rustic seat and crescent moon. I also find it interesting that the backdrop in the first photograph is slightly shabby and no attempt has been made to hide the canopy and ground-sheet.

Suffragettes marched, demanding their rights
Then in came Nineteen-twelve

Jack Judge went down to West Bromwich town
To welcome the brand-new year
And he went to a pub to have a little sup
‘Cos’ he liked a drop of beer
And when he had a few he started to sing, and his voice he lifted high
My name’s Jack Judge, I’ll write you a song, from Oldbury town come I

A Brummagem fella as was sitting close by
He heard what Jack did say
A pound to a penny, said he to Jack
Yow cor write a song in a day
Jack he laughed and he sang another song
And he said, I’ll take you on
This afternoon I’ll write you a song
And sing it ‘fore the day is done

Jack laughed again, he sang another song
And he called for a pint of beer
Then he caught a train to Stalybridge
Where that night he was due to appear
And on the very first day of Nineteen-twelve
Old Jack Judge won his bet
And the song he made and sang that day
We never will forget

In March Nineteen-twelve, brave Scott and his comrades
Died while a snowstorm roared
And later that year the good General Booth
Finally laid down his sword
There were riots in Ireland concerning Home Rule
Mrs. Pankhurst was imprisoned again
Wilbur Wright died, the first of the fliers
As the Royal Flying Corps was named
Titanic went down in the spring of that year
Taking one thousand five hundred lives
The Balkan states blazed from border to border
As Death began sharpening his knives

Of the Nineteen-ten monarchs who mourned for King Edward
In Nineteen-thirteen few survived
Though some of them lived to a peaceful old age
Assassains took many a life
Death came calmly to China and Sweden
But elsewhere the murderer’s hand
Struck the Pasha of Turkey and the King of the Greeks
While Spain survived Death’s plan
The armies of Europe paraded and postured
The stockpile of weapons increased
At The Hague, as if in grim desperation
They opened the Palace of Peace

More Suffragettes marches brought Nineteen-fourteen
Then the Archduke of Austria was slain
In less than two months, all of Europe was marching
Death was in business again
Many a young man from many a family
Willingly gave of his all
They died in their millions for dubious victory
Answering Kitchener’s call
As they went off to war in the trains and the troopships
They sang as they hurried along
And their words echo back from the graveyards of Flanders
Singing old Jack Judge’s song

It’s a long way to Tipperary, it’s a long way to go
It’s a long way to Tipperary, to the sweetest girl I know
Goodbye Piccadilly, farewell Leicester Square
It’s a long long way to Tipperary, but my heart lies there

CELEBRATION OF GAA 125TH ANNIVERSARY ON NOVEMBER 1ST Congratulations to all those involved in

CELEBRATION OF GAA 125TH ANNIVERSARY ON NOVEMBER 1ST

Congratulations to all those involved in organising the events last weekend to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the founding of the GAA. The inclement weather of Saturday night and Sunday morning eased to allow the parade take place from St. Patrick’s College to the Dr. Croke monument in the Square where a wreath was laid by GAA President, Christy Cooney and Director General, Padraic Duffy.

Well done in particular to Tipperary County Secretary, Tim Floyd and the Tipperaty 125 Committee, chaired by Semaus J King on contributing so much to the organisation of last weekend’s events. The 125 Committee has had a busy and successful year and will have a couple of more events to announce before this special year ends.

MUNSTER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hard luck to Thurles Sarsfields on their narrow defeat to Newtownshandrum of Cork in the Munster Club Senior Hurling championship quarter final on Sunday last. The fact that it was a fine game in difficult conditions will be of little consolation to Sarsfields but they certainly put up a fighting performance.

Hard luck also to Carrick Davins on their defeat to Whitegate of Clare in the Munster Club Intermediate Hurling Quarter Final last Saturday.

COUNTY INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL FINAL

Congratulations to Carrick Swans on winning the County Intermediate Football final in Clonmel on Sunday last when they defeated Ballyporeen in a repeat of the South Divisional final which the Swans also won. Swans were captained by Jamie Sweetman and this was their second title in the grade, having previously won 10 years ago in 1999.

COUNTY JUNIOR HURLING B FINAL

Congratulations to Templederry Kenyons on their victory over Mullinahone to win the County Junior B Hurling title in Holycross last Saturday. The Tim Maher Perpetual Cup, named after the great Boherlahan Dualla Gael and former Tipperary representative on Munster Council, was presented to jubilant Templederry captain, Damien Quinn by County Vice Chairman Sean Nugent and County PRO, Ger Ryan. It was the Kenyons second time to win this title having been previously led to victory in 1996 by Seamus Murray whose son Eanna was on the Tipperary minor hurling team this year. John Leahy made an unexpected second half appearance as a substitute for Mullinahone and while the speed of yesteryear is gone, he showed that the skill remains by scoring a fine point.

COUNTY FINALS THIS WEEKEND

There are 3 county finals to be played this weekend. The County Minor A Hurling Final between Arravale Rovers and Loughmore Castleiney, which was cancelled last Sunday due to bad weather conditions, has been refixed for Boherlahan on Saturday November 7th at 2.30pm with Noel Cosgrave refereeing. Noel from the Marlfield club will have a busy weekend as he is also on Munster Club championship duty on Sunday when he takes charge of the Munster Intermediate Club semi-final at Dungarvan between Dungarvan (Waterford) and Douglas (Cork) at 2.00pm. We wish him luck for both games.

The Junior Hurling A Final between Aherlow and Nenagh Éire Óg will take place in Páirc Shileáin on Saturday at 2pm. Nenagh last won this title in 2000 while Aherlow have never won the title. Keith Delahunty of Moyle Rovers will be the referee.

The Junior Football A Final between Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams and Shannon Rovers will take place in Templetuohy on Friday, November 6th at 8pm with Tom McGrath in charge. Kickhams last won the title in 1992 and Rovers will be seeking their first title at this grade.

GAA MUSEUM IN NOVEMBER

On the November 21st 1920 events outside of the GAA brought politics into the heart of the Association. The GAA Museum remembers the tragedy of Bloody Sunday with special commemorative guided tours of the Stadium at 1.30pm and 3.30pm on Sunday November 22nd 2009. One of the people shot dead that day during the game between Tipperary and Dublin was Tipperary footballer, Michael Hogan of Grangemockler after whom the Hogan Stand is named. He was also remembered last weekend in the Senior Football challenge game between Tipperary and Cork in Semple Stadium on Saturday night and in Grangemockler on Sunday morning where GAA President, Christy Cooney, unveiled a plaque commemorating the events of Bloody Sunday

It’s a long way to Tipperary….but soon, lots of people may be going there a lot more often.

An incredible venture is about to undertaken in the county, one that I cannot really believe will actually take place. People in the know have made assurances that a lot of the groundwork and capital are in place.

The project is being called The Tipperary Venue. The people handling the PR are calling it “the largest development of its kind in Ireland”.

Here’s the amazing bit….the components of this wonderful construction.

It will include an all-weather racecourse, a greyhound track, a golf course and driving range, an equestrian centre and….wait for it…..a15,000 seater music/entertainment venue — that’s bigger than the new O2 arena in Dublin.

There will also be a replica built of The White House.

An all-weather racecourse has been talked about for the Tipperary region for some years now and i’m sure the new racecourse/greyhound track will be closely modelled on the Dundalk operation.

A golf course and driving range, an equestrian centre…ambitious projects in themselves, and of course a huge 15,000 seater arena.

Who’s gonna use a place like this? How many people even live in the County of Tipperary? Will the golf course attract enough members to make it viable? Or will it be a championship course?

And what about Tipperary’s already existing three racecourses in Clonmel, Tipperary Town and Thurles? Is there a market for a fourth racecourse in the county?

A 15,000 seater music hall? Will top international acts be including Tipperary on their world tours? Only top international acts will be able to sell-out an arena that size. Sometimes those big international performers dont even come to Dublin.

Perhaps the biggest question is: Who is providing the funding? How much will this venture cost?

On a positive note, it’s great for local employment and residents of Tipperary and surrounding counties will have a proper all-round facility on their doorstep.

There is a press conference/media briefing next week ahead of submission of the planning permission. When more details of this impressive/ambitious project are announced, they’ll be posted here…….

Tipperary GAA Scene by County PRO Ger Ryan

COUNTY SENIOR HURLING FINAL

Congratulations to Thurles Sarsfields on winning their 30th county senior hurling title at Semple Stadium on Sunday in front of an attendance of 9,500 people. County Chairman Barry O’Brien presented the Dan Breen Cup to Sarsfields captain and long serving forward, Johnny Enright. Padraic Maher who had a great game at full back for Thurles was named Man of the Match. Sarfields will now face Newtownshandrum of Cork in the Munster Club championship quarter final in Semple Stadium on Sunday, November 1st, which will be 125 years exactly since the GAA was founded in Hayes Hotel in 1884. Thurles Sarsfields also won the title 50 years ago and 100 years ago on the 75th and 25th anniversaries of the GAA’s founding respectively. The first decade of the current millennium closes with Toomevara having won 6 of the 10 titles on offer, Sarsfields 2 and Mullinahone and Loughmore Castleiney 1 each. The last team to win a County Final scoring exactly 0-14 was Borris-Ileigh in 1986 and they went on to win the All Ireland club title in 1987 – an omen perhaps!

COUNTY INTERMEDIATE HURLING FINAL

Congratulations to Carrick Davins on winning their first ever County Intermediate title when they defeated Arravale Rovers by 1-13 to 1-6 in Semple Stadium on Sunday. County Vice Chairman, Sean Nugent presented the Jacksie Ryan Cup to the Davins Captain, Gerard Robinson. It is only the second time that a team from the South Division has won the Intermediate Hurling championship. The first was 30 years when Ballingarry won the championship in 1979, the inaugural year of the County Intermediate Hurling championship.

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL FINAL

It’s the turn of the club footballers to take centre stage this weekend when Aherlow will play Moyle Rovers in the county senior football final at Semple Stadium at 3pm on Sunday, October 25th. It will be preceded at 1pm by the Minor A Football final replay between Ardfinnan and Loughmore Castleiney. Aherlow last won the senior title in 2006 while Moyle Rovers won it last in 2007. Moyle Rovers are the only club to have already won 2 titles this decade. Prior to 2007, they also won in it in 2000 when they completed a 3 in a row and secured a 5th title in 6 years. We wish all 4 clubs the best of luck on Sunday. Between the 2 games, the 1975 county senior football champions, Kilruane MacDonaghs, will be introduced on the pitch.

ARRANGEMENTS AT SEMPLE STADIUM FOR SENIOR FOOTBALL FINAL

The entry fee to the County Final is €20 for Adults, €10 for Students and OAPs, and Under 16s are free (Valid photographic I.D. required). Only Ardán Ó Riain (New Stand) will be open. All passholders must go to stile 41 or 54 including County Board passholders, 5 year term ticket holders and stewards

We thank our patrons in advance for their co-operation with these arrangements.

VODAFONE GAA ALLSTARS

Tipperary won 4 hurling awards when the 2009 Vodafone GAA All Stars were announced last week. Congratulations to Padraic Maher (full back, 1st award), Conor O’Mahony (left half back, 2nd award), Larry Corbett (right half forward, 1st award) and Noel McGrath (right corner forward, 1st award). Noel was also chosen as Young Hurler of the Year. Noel’s All Star award is the first for a Loughmore Castleiney player and he is also the youngest ever winner of an All Star award being still two months short of his 19th birthday. Eddie Enright was the only previous award winner from Thurles Sarsfields and Larry Corbett and Padraic Maher are the first two non-brothers to bring 2 awards to the same Tipperary club in the one season. Previous dual winners from the same club were Conal and Cormac Bonnar of Cashel King Cormacs (1989 and 1991) and Eoin and Paul Kelly of Mullinahone (2002 and 2005). Conor O’Mahony becomes the first Tipperary player to win awards in successive years since Eoin Kelly won 3 awards in a row between 2004 and 2006.

Michael Hogan Commemoration – TIpp V CORK SF CHALLENGE

Following the disappointment which followed the cancellation due to the inclement weather experienced in May of much of the Michael Hogan memorial weekend, the people of Grangemockler will complete their commemoration of Michael Hogan and the events of Bloody Sunday on the weekend of October 31st 2009. The events will kick off with a senior football challenge between Tipperary and Cork under the new lights in Semple Stadium Thurles on Halloween night, Saturday 31st at 7.00PM. The clash of the Conor Counihan’s Munster champions and All Ireland runners up and John Evans National league division 3 winners will provide a fitting opportunity to finish off the footballing year in what will be the last inter county match of 2009. The weekend will be completed when Uachtarán Cumann Luthchleas Gael, Criostóir Ó Cuana unveils a plaque in Michael Hogan’s home village of Grangemockler on Sunday morning November 1st at 9.15am. This plaque will commemorate the events of Bloody Sunday in this the 125th year of the GAA. The 125th anniversary celebrations of the GAA could not be completed without marking such a seminal moment not alone in GAA history but in that of the formation of our nation as a whole. The people of Grangemockler are anxious to finish what was started earlier in the year with a fitting conclusion to their efforts to honour one of their own and would invite all of those who wish to be part of this commemoration of the momentous events of Bloody Sunday 1920 to join us over the weekend

GOOD WISHES TO JAMES WOODLOCK

We wish James Woodlock all the best for a speedy and full recovery from the broken leg he sustained in an accidental clash towards the end of the county senior hurling final last Sunday. We also thank all the medical personnel who tended James so well at Semple Stadium.

FRIENDS OF TIPP FOOTBALL MEMBERSHIP DRAW

Time is running out if you have not bought a ticket for the Friends of Tipperary Football Membership Draw which has many excellent prizes. Tickets are €20 each and are available from any member of the Committee. The 1st prize is €5,000 euro and there is a total Prize Fund of €9,000 euro. Proceeds of the Draw support all County Football teams. The Draw will be held on Wednesday, 4th November.

REPRINT OF TOMMY DOYLE’S BOOK

A reprint of Tommy Doyle’s book “A Lifetime in Hurling” is now available. The autobiography of the famed Thurles Sarsfields and Tipperary hurler was the first autobiography of a GAA star and was first published in 1955. The cost including packaging and postage is €56.50. The book is now from Kenny’s Bindery, 13-18 Kilkerrin Park, Liosbaun, Tuam Road, Galway, phone 091-709362, fax 091-757516, email: bindery@kennys.ie.

If I weren’t enjoying A Tree Grows in Brooklyn so much, I’d be wondering if I’m just too picky about novels.

The narrative structure of this book is complex – long passages from the purported papers of protagonist Charles O’Brien, with commentary by the “discoverer” of the papers. As the book progresses, diary entries and letters of others also get layered in. As I noted early on, I found this layering off-putting, but continued reading.

To Delaney’s credit, the various sources have distinct voices, but they can be irritating, with breathlessly grand statements about the importance of what they’re experiencing (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn does the naive narrator much better). The characters also comments on each others’ personalities and writing in a way that seems to be strong-arming the reader into agreeing (Charles’ writing displays “fluid lyricism”, the discoverer of his papers tells us).

The discoverer is an amateur historian and his passages are an excuse to dump enormous chunks of Delaney’s research on the place and period into the novel. That place and period is intrinsically interesting – Ireland’s struggle for independence – but Delaney over-reaches and has Charles meet nearly every key player of the period, from Oscar Wilde and W.B. Yeats (who encourages him to go for the girl he loves) to Charles Parnell and the founders of Sinn Fein. It deepened my understanding of the era, but at great cost to the believability of the novel.

Since this book came out only last year, I won’t give any spoilers about the ending, but I will say I found it impossibly pat. It’s a bit underwritten (after 450 pages, what’s a few more?) and a sprawling account of Irish history, covering over a century, should not end with the feeling that every loose end has been tied up.

*No one noticed I’ve had him as Frank Dougherty in the Reading List for the past month? Oops.

Tipperary GAA Scene by County PRO Ger Ryan COUNTY SENIOR AND INTERMEDIATE HURLING FINALS The club hu

Tipperary GAA Scene by County PRO Ger Ryan

COUNTY SENIOR AND INTERMEDIATE HURLING FINALS

The club hurling scene in Tipperary reaches its climax this weekend with the County Senior Hurling final between Drom and Inch and Thurles Sarsfields on Sunday October 18th at 3.30pm in Semple Stadium. It will be preceded by the County Intermediate Hurling final between Arravale Rovers and Carrick Davins at 1.30pm. We wish all 4 clubs good luck for their big day.

Thurles Sarsfields will be seeking their 30th county senior hurling title while Mid Division rivals Drom and Inch will be seeking their first. Sarsfields will also be seeking to become the second club, joining Toomevara, which has won all 3 Dan Breen Cups. The original Dan Breen Cup was first presented in 1931 and was replaced in 1972 and it in turn was replaced in 2006.

Interestingly, it has always been a team from the Mid division that has won the County Senior Hurling title in a major anniversary year of the GAA. Thurles Sarsfields won it in 1909 and 1959, while Moycarkey Borris won it in 1934 and 1984. The 50 year trend suggests a Thurles win but Drom and Inch will surely have different ideas.

In the Intermediate Final, Carrick Davins will be seeking their first victory at this grade but of course they have a famous history at senior level having won county senior titles in 1966 and 1967. Arravale Rovers will be seeking their 2nd title having previously won in 1997. Neither finalist won their divisional title this year but both have peaked at the right time and we can look forward to a keen contest for the Jacksie Ryan Cup.

HONOURING TEAMS OF THE PAST

The Borris-Ileigh teams which won the County Senior Hurling Championships in 1981, 1983 and 1986 will be honoured in Semple Stadium on Sunday between the Intermediate final and the Senior final. In the 1981 final Borris defeated Roscrea by 1-14 to 0-12 with Noel O’Dwyer scoring 0-8 and receiving the Man of the Match award. Timmy Stapleton was captain. Noel O’Dwyer was again Man of the Match in 1983 when Francis Spillane captained the team in their 0-17 to 1-11 victory over Loughmore Castleiney. In 1986 they defeated defending county and All Ireland club champions Kilruane MacDonaghs by 0-14 to 0-7 with Michael Ryan captaining the team and Philip Kenny earning the Man of the Match award having scored 0-6. That team of course went on to win the All Ireland club championship on March 17th 1987 when they defeated Rathnure of Wexford by 2-9 to 0-9 in Croke Park. Later that year, Richard Stakelum captained Tipperary to their first Munster Senior Hurling championship victory in 16 years and famously proclaimed an end to “the famine” in his victory speech in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney.

We are grateful to the Tipperary Star and Younges of the Ragg for sponsoring this event which adds greatly to the atmosphere of county final day. We also would like to thank Seamus J. King, Pat Carey and John Costigan for their efforts in organising the event, Siobhan Mackey in the GAA office for her administrative support and the Borris-Ileigh club for their assistance and co-operation.

ARRANGEMENTS AT SEMPLE STADIUM FOR COUNTY FINALS

The entry fee to the County Final is €20 for Adults, €10 for Students and OAPs, and Under 16s are free (Valid photographic I.D. required). Both stands will be open at 12.30pm. Groups will be accommodated at stile 50 in Ardan Ó Riain (New Stand).

Stile 1 in the Kinnane Stand (Old Stand) and Stiles 41 and 54 in New Stand are for county board pass holders, 5 year term passes and voluntary stewards’ passes. It is important to note that children will not be allowed out of the Stadium during matches unless accompanied by an adult.

We thank our patrons in advance for their co-operation with these arrangements.

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL SEMI-FINALS

Well done to Moyle Rovers and Aherlow on their victories in the County Senior Football semi-finals in Semple Stadium on Sunday last in front of an attendance of 1,100 people. They will now meet in the County Final also in Semple Stadium on Sunday October 25th. Aherlow last won the title in 2006 and Moyle Rovers last won it in 2007. Hard luck to both losing semi-finalists Killenaule and Loughmore Castleiney on a well fought campaign.

SEAMUS Ó RIAIN CUP FINAL

Congratulations to Kilruane MacDonaghs on their 1-22 to 0-17 win over Lorrha and Dorrha in the final of the Seamus Ó Riain Cup Senior Hurling competition which was played in Borrisokane on Sunday last. Kilruane become the second winners of the Ó Riain Cup having lost last year’s inaugural final to Carrick Swans. County Vice Chairman Sean Nugent presented the cup to winning captain, Seamus Hennessy.

COUNTY MINOR B HURLING FINAL

Moyne-Templetuohy Óg captured the County Minor “B” Hurling title on Saturday last thanks to a 2-19 to 1-12 victory over Knockmealdown Gaels at Leahy Park Cashel. The Moyne-Templetuohy / Killea combination were captained by 2009 County Minor Hurling captain, Liam Butler, and became the fourth Mid club to capture this title this decade following on from the successes of Drom & Inch (2003), JK Brackens (2004) and Moycarkey-Borris (2007). This competition began in 1984 and was won by Moyne-Templetuohy in 1987 when William Maher was the winning captain.

COUNTY MINOR B FOOTBALL FINAL

Well done to Killenaule on winning the County Minor “B” Football title for the first time on Saturday by virtue of a 2-18 to 2-6 victory over Borris-Ileigh at Boherlahan. Afterwards, County Football Board Chairman Noel Morris presented the cup to Killenaule captain Conor Prendergast. Killenaule became the 20th club to capture this title since the competition began in 1985 and the eighth club from the South Division.

COUNTY JUNIOR B FOOTBALL FINAL

Clonmel Óg won the County Junior B Football final on Saturday thanks to a 2-9 to 0-8 victory over Sean Treacys at Boherlahan. Afterwards, County Football Board Chairman Noel Morris presented the cup to Clonmel Óg captain Darren Burns. This competition began at County level in 1995 and in the intervening years, no club has managed to win the title more than once. Of the 15 clubs tied at the top of the roll of honour at this grade with 1 title each, there are 5 North clubs, 4 South clubs, 4 Mid clubs and 2 clubs from the West division.

WORLD TITLE FOR BALLINA HANDBALLER

Congratulations to Ger Coonan (Ballina) who in partnership with Darragh Daly (Tyrone) won the Mens A Doubles in the Handball World Championships in Portland, USA. In the final against the US pairing of Garner and Steele, they went down 21/12 in the first and in a very tight second game they won narrowly 21/18. In the Tie Break they worked hard and finally come out 11/6 winners. Ger also reached the final of the Mens A Singles but he was defeated by Ruairí Kelly (Tyrone) 21/14, 21/15.

FRIENDS OF TIPP FOOTBALL MEMBERSHIP DRAW

The 1st prize is €5,000 euro and there is a total Prize Fund of €9,000 euro. Proceeds of the Draw support all County Football teams. The Draw will be held on Wednesday, 4th November.

One of the things I love about vacation spots, especially condos, is the collection of used books, mostly paperbacks, that builds up over time. The selection here is appropriately eclectic or even bizarre, though it can’t necessarily all be blamed on prior visitors – there’s a sign saying some of the books were purchased from the local Humane Society (your joke here). Still, I can’t imagine any buyer on behalf of the resort choosing “One Heartbeat Away: Your Journey into Eternity”, which promises to tell me what the afterlife will be like “in a logical, interesting and straightforward manner”. I was disappointed to find it appears to be just standard evangelical Christian literature – lots of anecdotes and Bible quotes, a little evolution bashing. I was hoping for something more out-there.

Mixed in with the Stephen King and James Patterson are the requisite handful of romance novels, and a volume entitled “Everything You Pretend to Know and Are Afraid Someone Will Ask”. This last one had promise – I’m a big fan of the Imponderables series (“Do Penguins Have Knees?” was an early gift to the Writer) and Schott’s Miscellany – but it’s somewhat dated. The focus on financial terms (“what’s the Fed?” “what’s a cartel?”) feels very 80s, though the book was published in 1996. Even if I didn’t deal with finance a fair amount at work, the last couple years has educated all of us quite a bit about discount windows and movements in the prime rate.

Most disappointing, however, is that there’s no local guidebook or fish identification guide. We left our Caribbean Reef ID book home in New York, so we’re relying on folks on the boats and the Internet to figure out some of the odd stuff (the lettuce leaf sea slug looks exactly like you’d expect, but what’s the kinda camo little fish with red dots? my best guess is a red-spotted hawkfish).

I’d like to make a contribution to the place, but Tipperary is a library book and Brightness Falls is on loan from the Writer, so neither is mine to give. I only brought two books, and have read little of either, because I can only handle so much input in a day. Diving is sensory overload so a lot of my “surface intervals” are spent napping, catching up on some blogs or making little trips around the island. Hope to see the blue iguanas on this visit.

COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Well done to Thurles Sarsfields and Drom and Inch on qualifying for the County Senior Hurling championship final to be played in Semple Stadium on October 18th. Commiserations to Toomevara and Upperchurch Drombane, they both met better teams on the day but both contributed a lot to the 2009 championship.

The 2009 final will be a repeat of the 2005 final which Sarsfields won by 1-17 to 0-15 on October 16th. The goal was scored by Wayne Cully. It was Sarsfields’ 29th title and their first since 1974. Ger “Redser” O’Grady was captain and lined out at left half forward – he scored 0-3. Their other scorers were Johnny Enright 0-6, Wayne Cully 1-2, Richie Ruth 0-3, Pat Lalor, Stephen Lillis, and Eddie Enright 0-1 each. Drom’s top man and Man of the Match award winner was Seamus Butler who scored 0-11 (0-7 frees) with the other scorers being James Woodlock 0-2 and Ml Butler, K Butler 0-1 each. The referee was Brian White and the attendance was in excess of 12,000. Interestingly since the Dan Breen Cup was first presented in 1931 a final has never been played on October 18th.

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL SEMI-FINALS

The others were Lorrha and Dorrha (2000), Borrisokane (2001), Shannon Rovers (2002) and Ballinahinch (2007). Clonakenny are the only multiple winners of this championship having been successful in the inaugural year, 1999 and since in 2005 and 2006.

Veronica Molloy T/a Crossogue Preserves, Ballycahill was announced as the overall winner of the 2009

Veronica Molloy T/a Crossogue Preserves, Ballycahill was announced as the overall winner of the 2009 National Enterprise Awards County Competition while this year’s Runner-up was Lyncare Systems Ltd, C/o Gordon and Andrea Lynch, Unit 3, Shannonside Business Park, Birdhill. The winners were announced at a lunch time prize giving ceremony held at the Peppermill Restaurant, Nenagh on Thursday 1 October organised by the Tipperary County Enterprise Board.

This prestigious County competition carried a prize fund of €3,000 together with Louise Kennedy crystal awards and certificates of achievement. The County winners, Crossogue Preserves received a cheque for €1,500 and will now advance to represent North Tipperary in the National competition to be held in Dublin Castle on 10 November next. Lyncare Systems Ltd were awarded a cash prize of €1,000 in addition to the crystal award.

The competition was introduced in 1997 by the County & City Enterprise Boards to recognise the contribution that small enterprises make to Ireland’s economic development and to acknowledge their role in building a vibrant and successful indigenous business sector. The competition is open to all small firms that have received financial support from the County or City Enterprise Boards in the past. This year’s awards were presented by Matt Shortt, Director of Services, North Tipperary County Council, the new Chairperson of the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board. Rita Guinan, the Enterprise Board CEO acted as MC for the event which was attended by Board Directors, members of the Evaluation Committee, business interests and media. Last year’s Winner and Runner-up were also present.

Mr Ed Field, Digino Marketing Ltd, who won the 2008 competition recounted his experience and detailed the benefits that winning brought to his company in terms of free PR and the “opening of doors” with bodies such as Enterprise Ireland, Irish Ferries and Ryan Air etc. Mr Field stated that “it is fantastic when someone on the outside recognises that you are trying to do a great job as an owner / manager as generally we tend to be focused on internal operations”. Marian Murphy Cooney the well known local Fashion Designer and the 2008 Runner-up was also in attendance.

The winning entries were selected by independent adjudicators, Brian Keating, Shannon Development and Tom O’Keeffe of Bank of Ireland. At National level the Competition carries a prize fund worth in excess of €20,000 and the winning companies gain invaluable press coverage and acclaim.

Previous county winners included: 2008 – Digino Marketing Ltd, Ballina and 2007 – Cooleeney Farmhouse Cheese, Moyne Thurles who both made it into the top 8 firms in the Country. Other winners down through the years included John Cavanagh, T/a Friary Iron Works, Nenagh, Soap Opera Ltd, Nenagh; QA Resources, Brenwood Products Ltd., Hennessy Engineering Works, The Manor Nursing Home, Tipperary Garden Peat, Tipperary Wood Products and Mackey Plant.

Profile of the winners

Overall Winner
Veronica Molloy
T/a Crossogue Preserves,
Crossogue House,
Ballycahill,
Co. Tipperary

Veronica Molloy was born and raised in Kenya before training as a nurse in England. After Veronica’s marriage to Tony in 1967 she relocated to Ireland and set-up home at Crossogue House, a mixed farm where all the fruit and vegetables used in the preserves were grown. Veronica was taught how to make preserves by her mother-in-law Nancy Molloy and many of the recipes used today are family recipes passed down through the generations. Busy raising six children, initially jam making was little more than a hobby producing preserves for local stores and country markets but as new recipes evolved and demand grew, larger commercial stores started to take an interest.

Simplicity combined with superiority is the key. All preserves are made using traditional cooking methods using the highest quality ingredients and produced in small batches by hand to maximise control procedures and taste; no artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives are used. Although this means that production is labour intensive it results in a unique and distinctive flavour. This continuing dedication aimed at producing a superior product has brought success in the shape of Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards for the past ten years at the prestigious Guild of Fine Food Fair held in London. In July 2007 Crossogue Preserves won 5 Gold medals in London and a fêted Bridgestone Award and was also appointed as supplier of preserves to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at Powerscourt. In 2008 Crossogue won the top award – 3* Gold – for their lemon Curd and 2* Gold – for their Old Irish Thick Cut Marmalade and this was followed up by with a Gold Award for 2009 for their Cranberry Jelly.

Crossogue Preserves is a family owned operation with an experienced and dedicated team whose aim is to produce quality products with efficiency and offers excellent customer service. However it is Veronica who is the driving force behind the company, which currently provides employment for herself and one other on a full time basis and four additional part time staff. The business currently supplies retail outlets nationally in addition to a number of hotels, restaurants and gift shops. Additionally their products are stocked in outlets in Belfast, London and Brussels.

In recent times Crossogue Preserves has taken an exotic turn with the launch of a series of new products – hot red pepper jelly, banana chutney, and banana and rum jam – inspired by Veronica’s trip to Tanzania last September with the Playing for Life Charity.

Veronica’s mission was to share her preserve-making skills with a class of 14 Tanzanian women, using fruit and vegetables grown locally. As well as the three recipes which have gone into production in Ireland, Molloy and her group made sweet potato jam, mango and passion fruit jam, melon and lime jam, and lots of exotic fruit chutneys.

Crossogue Preserves has just launched in the United States. Veronica was one of a group of Tipperary based businesses who travelled to the Irish Fest in Milwaukee to showcase their products. The event was an invaluable market research exercise as Veronica came into direct contact with consumers and received feedback from upwards of 150,000 people over the four days of the event. The result is that Crossogue Preserves has just received their first order in America and is in the process of appointing a distributor there.

Crossogue Preserves is an excellent example of how a small business can grow over time into a commercial success story.
Runner Up

Lyncare Systems Ltd.
C/o Gordon & Andrea Lynch
The service now provided by Lyncare Systems was fully supported by TNCEB by means of a Capital grant in 2007.
Allowing 11 months from initial concept for setup and relocation to new premises Lyncare Systems opened it doors to provide the first decontamination of patient equipment in February 2008.
Lyncare Systems Ltd and its sister company Lyncare are owned and managed by Gordon and Andrea Lynch. Gordon Lynch is a graduate of the University of Limerick with a Bachelor of Technology in Electronic Manufacturing. He started his career as a Product Engineer with NTS Computer Systems in Shannon where he worked as a Product Engineer liaising between R&D and Manufacturing. In 2000, he moved to Schaffner where he worked until 2002 at which time having completed a Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurial Management in UL he took the position of Engineering Manager with Chameleon Colour Systems in Tuam Co. Galway. He left this position in 2004 to set up Lyncare Ltd.
Andrea Lynch is a qualified Registered General Nurse and worked initially in the Midwestern Regional Hospital and then in Beaumont Hospital before going to Australia during which time she worked a private agency nurse. In 1999, she joined Evans Medical Supplies Ltd initially as a Sales Representative, working her way up to the position of Sales and Marketing Manager. In 2004 she left to form Lyncare Ltd with her husband Gordan.
The company currently employs 9 full time staff and have plans to grow the business into the future. Gordan and Andrea would like to expand the business to have a second decontamination facility in Leinster and to be the leading decontamination provider in the healthcare sector in Ireland.

TIPPERARY GAA SCENE BY COUNTY PRO GER RYAN COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP Well done to Thurles S

TIPPERARY GAA SCENE

BY COUNTY PRO GER RYAN

COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Well done to Thurles Sarsfields, Upperchurch Drombane, Drom and Inch and Toomevara on qualifying for the County Senior Hurling semi-finals last weekend. Thurles Sarsfields will play Upperchurch Drombane at 2pm and Toomevara will play Drom and Inch at 3.30pm in the semi-finals at Semple Stadium on Sunday October 4th. Both games are without precedent – neither pairing ever occurred before in a semi-final. Toomevara have won 12 of the 16 semi finals they have played in since 1989. They only lost one of those 12 finals – to Boherlahan in 1996. It will be the first appearance in a semi-final for Upperchurch Drombane but the area has a proud history – Drombane won the county senior hurling championship in 1894. Leaving aside draws, 22 of the past 50 Tipp Semi Finals have been won by three points or less (1984-2008 incl). There were 5 draws in that 25 years all involving a team from the Mid division and a Mid team won all of the replays. Thurles Sarsfields have not lost a semi final since Toomevara beat them in 1996 by 1-17 to 0-6. The top semi- final scorers for Drom and Inch in the past twenty five years were Seamus Callanan 1-8 v Killenaule in 2007; Seamus Callanan 1-2 v Nenagh Eire Og in 2006; Seamus Butler 1-10 v Nenagh Eire Óg in 2005 and John Harkin 0-3 v Lorrha in 1984. Ken Dunne has been Toomevara’s top scorer in their last four county semi finals. He scored 1-9 (0-6f), v Moneygall in 2003; 0-10 (0-5f, 0-1 ‘65’) v Mullinahone in 2004; 0-6, all frees, v Mullinahone 2006; and 0-7 (0-4 frees and 0-3 ‘65s’) v Loughmore Castleiney in 2008. He was also Toome’s joint top scorer with Tommy Dunne and Kevin Mc Cormack, 0-4 each, in the 1996 semi-final win over Thurles Sarsfields.

ARRANGEMENTS AT SEMPLE STADIUM FOR SEMI-FINALS

Both stands will be open. At the Kinnane Stand (Old Stand), stile no 1 should be used by all pass holders and stewards to gain access. The ambulance door will be used for teams and team officials only. At the O Riain Stand (New Stand) stiles 41 and 54 should be used by all pass holders and stewards. The door beside stile 54 is to be used for wheelchair access. Those with buggies should purchase a ticket at a stile and enter via the ambulance door at the Old Stand or the wheelchair door at the New Stand. We thank patrons in advance for their co-operation.

COUNTY UNDER 21 “C” HURLING FINAL

Well done to Lattin-Cullen on becoming the third club from the West division to capture the County Under 21 “C” Hurling title following their 3-10 to 2-6 victory over Rockwell Rovers on Sunday at Sean Treacy Park. The winning captain for Lattin-Cullen was Stephen Martin. This competition began in 2000 and the County Roll of Honour to date is as follows – Ballinahinch (2 – 2000, 2006), Clonakenny (2 – 2005, 2007), Newport (1 – 2001), Kilruane MacDonaghs (1 – 2002), Ballyneale (1 – 2003), Solohead (1 – 2004) and Sean Treacys (1 – 2008). For the full list of Divisional and County Champions roll of honour and County Final winning captains, check out the Tipperary GAA Archives web site at www.tippgaaarchives.com.

FRIENDS OF TIPP FOOTBALL MEMBERSHIP DRAW

The Friends of Tipperary Football are presently running a Membership Draw. Tickets are €20 each and are available from any member of the Committee. The 1st prize is €5,000 euro and there is a total Prize Fund of €9,000 euro. Proceeds of the Draw support all County Football teams. The Draw will be held on Wednesday, 4th November.

TIPPERARY GAA YEAR BOOK

It’s that time of the year again when the preliminary work on the production of the Tipperary G.A.A. Yearbook commences. Chairman, Seamus King, informs me that the first meeting of the committee takes place this Thursday in Lár na Páirce and it’s all systems go after that. The deadline for the receipt of material, especially obituary notices, is November 1. This year, the Yearbook will be of special interest because of Tipperary senior hurlers’ tremendous performances in the National League and the championship. The book will record the highlights of these achievements, as well as the efforts of the other county teams in hurling and football, and all the other G.A.A. activity within the county. Also, the highlights of the 125 celebrations within the county will be recorded. The committee hope that many people in the county will be willing to take out advertisements in the book, which helps to defray the costs of production and, with this in mind they have appointed Fiachra O’Keeffe, Glenough, Rossmore, Cashel as advertising agent for the 2010 Yearbook. They are hopeful that he will get a good response. The final date for the receipt of advertisements in November 13 and it is hoped to have the book, which will be printed by the Nenagh Guardian, in the shops by December 11.

TIPPERARY CLUBS DRAW

The October Tipperary GAA Clubs draw will be held this Friday October 2nd in The Halfway, Monroe, Clonmel On the night we will present a €15,000 cheque to local man John Lynch after his big win in the September draw. Promoter of the winning ticket Tom Acheson will be presented with €500. Again we have two cars to be given away on the night along with a Holiday and numerous cash prizes. Come along and support local Club Moyle Rovers on the night.
