Poly3ster on co-hosting duties, Spin‘ on the turntables (and of course the guys performing); it’s a real LA affair happening in San Diego tomorrow night. Pac Div certainly getting back out on the show circuit.

LOS ANGELES UNIFIED!

Last Friday I got a chance to see U-N-I, TiRon, Dom Kennedy and some other folks perform at 111 Minna in the city.  Honestly, I enjoyed myself.  Peep the article I wrote and some pics I took down below.           

            The school of Hip Hop has a brand new freshman class and San Francisco welcomed U-N-I, TiRon, Dom Kennedy and others to let people know that they have arrived.
            111 Minna was a good venue for the Fresh Coast: We Go Hard show last Friday Night.  The artwork on the walls was just as eclectic as the crowd that showed up to enjoy the music.
            Hosted by BMUSE with sets from DJ Franchise in between some acts, first up was Stresmatic from The Federation, a local Bay Area rap group.  He had some new material to perform with his new group, 1st Place Muzic.
           

           The new songs that the crowd was receptive to were “I’m Rad” and “Being Broke Sucks”. 
            He also performed his Federation verses from “Hyphy” and “I Got Grapes” in his set.
            Stresmatic got some audience participation during “Being Broke Sucks” by yelling to the crowd, “You must be rich if you don’t feel this song!”
            Monique Perkins, a 26 year-old Oakland resident enjoyed Stresmatic’s performance. 
            “His new songs were cool.  I liked how he did some of his songs with The Federation in between the new ones,” she said.
            Bringing more Bay Area flavor to the stage was the DJ-ing trio, Bossasaurus.  They hail from Oakland as well and had a nice crowd in front of the stage that danced during their whole set.
            They entertained their crowd with a mix of electronic music, hip hop and their own sound effects, accompanied by their hoodies fully equipped with teeth, eyes and plates running down the back.
            After Bossasaurus, Los Angeles was up next with El Prez to the stage.

            He performed a few songs by himself before he brought out DNEZ.  DNEZ added some energy to the mix as they performed “Cop Trees”. 
            To finish off his set, El Prez brought some of the FCC crew out, which included Dale Danja and Chris Focus,  to perform “Flossangeles”.
            Syneicia Smith, a 22 year-old Los Angeles resident, hadn’t heard of El Prez until the night of the Fresh Coast event.
            “El Prez was okay.  Probably could have been better, but he was okay hearing him for the first time,” she said.
            Next on the list was TiRon and Ayomari.  They performed songs from TiRon’s recently released mixtape, Ketchup. 

            “Sydney”, “Still Never Happy” and “Throwing My Money”, which a very creative video was just released for, engaged the crowd. 
            TiRon also gave the audience a preview of some new material before his set was cut short due to time constraints.
            The man of the hour seemed to be Dom Kennedy.  It looked as if a lot of the crowd came out to see him.

            He performed “Hard Work”, “Showtime”, “Watermelon Sundae” (complete with a young lady brought up on stage) and a couple of other songs off of both of his mixtapes, 25th Hour and FutureStreet/DrugSounds. 
             The finale was Yonas and Thurzday a.k.a. U-N-I.  The crowd had dwindled down majorly, but that didn’t stop U-N-I from bringing the energy.
            They performed  “Land of the Kings”, which is a Mountain Dew Green Label Sound record,  “Windows” off of their latest mixtape, A Love Supreme and a few others.

            They had been at UC Davis earlier that day and gave out all of their goodies which prompted Thurzday to hand out his watch to “the hypest fan.”
            U-N-I closed out the night with “Hollywood Hiatus”, jumping off stage, performing in the crowd and with the crowd.
            Bay Area artist JBillion, liked the idea of all of the artists at one show. 
            “I wish they would bring more mainstream people with the underground artists to help them get more exposure,” he said.  “It’s a good concept though bringing everybody out.”
            Seeing some of the freshman Hip Hop class on Friday night was a pleasure, but it will be even better to see them when they graduate.

This Tiron with a video for “Throwing My Money”. I think I have a friend who is cool with the producer for Tiron’s Ketchup mixtape. The mixtape is tough and has been out for a while and I was kinda shock to see a video for the track after being out this long, but none the less I was pleased to this visual treat.

Today, bloggers near and far jumped for joy.. TiRon’s latest video is finally online!

If that wasn’t enough motivation to watch it, you must understand that this video has the cosign from MY MOM.  She knows TiRon well, and she smiled through the whole thing.  Then she said “That was soooo him.  It was cute!”

(If you know my mom at all, you know that comment alone is enough to bump TiRon’s street cred up about 5 notches)
