LOS ANGELES: James Cameron has shored up his position as king of the worldwide box office. Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster ”Titanic” sailed beyond the $2 billion mark in lifetime ticket sales, thanks to a 3-D re-release of the film that was timed to the centennial of the ship’s sinking.

Only one other movie has topped $2 billion, and it’s also one of Cameron’s. His 2009 sci-fi smash ”Avatar” earned $2.8 billion worldwide. The ”Titanic” reissue took in about $100 million this weekend $11.6 million domestically and a whopping $88.2 million in 69 overseas markets.

That included a $58 million debut in China and put the re-release total worldwide at $190.8 million. Added to the film’s $1.84 billion haul in its original release, ”Titanic” now stands at $2.03 billion worldwide.

Last Saturday, April 7, while the rest of the Philippines are still reeling in from the age old Holy Week traditions, life usually returns to normal on Black Saturday. That’s when the malls and other establishments open after a 2 day break. It was such a special day for me, a nostalgic day because the megablockbuster that held the title of top grossing film of all time for 12 years, the unsinkable Titanic, was released again in theaters. This time, it’s released in eye-popping Digital 3D. I must have seen the film more than 7 times in the cinema when it was shown in 1998 here in the Philippines, and numerous times on home video, but I still had the same excitement when I saw it again last Saturday. There is actually a special reason why it’s being re-released. Aside from presenting the film in Digital 3D, it is being released to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the infamous tragedy that took place on April 14, 1912, which will always be remembered as the day RMS Titanic sank below the icy depths of the North Atlantic after it hit an iceberg & punctured 5 of the 12 water tight chambers. Going back to the nostalgia, Titanic will always be on my list as one of my favorite movies. When I saw it again, I thought that I’d be able to breeze through it, because I’ve seen the film lots of times. I’ve memorized a majority of the lines, the scenes. But, it all changed as soon as the movie started. It brought me back to my high school days, when I was one of the many who went crazy over the film. It felt like watching again for the first time. It still elicited the same emotions, the same reactions. I still laughed & cried at the right moments. I was still gushing at the romantic scenes. Most of all, I was in aw because the astounding visuals of the film was futhermore enhanced by 3D technology. Aside from breaking box office records all over the world, Titanic also made superstars out its two lead stars, Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet. Before Titanic, Leo was a just a teen heartthrob who had acting potential & Kate was just introduced to international audiences in the Oscar winning film Sense & Sensibility. After this film, they both went on to star in major productions, bask in critical accolades& receive Oscar nods for their performances (with Kate eventually winning her first Best Actress Oscar for the film The Reader in 2009; Leo still has to win his but has been nominated as Best Actor for The Aviator & Blood Diamond). The film was also nominated for a record breaking 14 Oscars & won 11 statuettes. It’s theme song, My Heart Will Go On, will always be one of the most memorable movie themes, one of the bestselling singles (the soundtrack still remains the bestselling soundtrack of all time) & solidified Celine Dion’s status as one of the world’s top divas & bestselling artists. The haunting & iconic musical score of James Horner will never fail to bring you to tears & take you back to that journey again.

It also made an award winning director out of James Cameron, the man behind such big action films like Terminator & True Lies. While watching the film, I came to realize how well researched the script was and the melding of fact & fiction was almost seamless, you would actually believe that the love story of Jack & Rose actually took place. I read a few articles about the film, and alot of critics predicted in 1997 that Titanic would be a flop, that it’s going to be an expensive loss for both Fox & Paramount, the studios that jointly produced the film. The budget was at an astounding USD200 Million, the most expensive film ever made at the time (and I think it still is). But, they were silenced when the film played to SRO crowds & the same critics who were not convinced about the film became instant fans & showered praises on the film. According to Wikipedia: Titanic went on to earn USD600,788,188. in North America & generating an international gross of $1,242,413,080 and accumulating a grand total of $1,843,201,268 worldwide. It became the highest-grossing film in history, and remained so for twelve years, until Avatar, also written and directed by Cameron, surpassed it in 2010. After its 2012 3D re-release, Titanic has so far increased its box-office earnings to an estimated $626,434,123 in North America and $1,278,913,000 in foreign markets, for a total of $1,905,347,123. Box Office Mojo estimates that after adjusting for ticket price inflation, Titanic would be the fifth highest-grossing film of all time in the United States and Canada.

Now that Titanic has been re-released in 3D, I think it’s the perfect time to introduce the film to a new breed of audiences, especially to those who were too young to see the film when it was shown in 1997-1998. For me, Titanic will be this generation’s epic love story, this generations Gone with the Wind or Casablanca. Titanic will always go on, a classic that will stand the test of time. I’d glady suggest that you see this film again, if only for the nostalgia & appreciate it again, this time in amazing 3D technology.

By Nathan Gordon | ng312310@ohiou.edu | @GordonRises
Titanic 3D | Directed by James Cameron | PG-13

First Words
Everybody, besides the people who refuse to take part in watching a three-hour “chick flick,” knows Titanic. Some of us differ on how good the movie actually is, but no one can deny the impact it has had on the film industry since it was released around a decade and a half ago. Now the second-highest grossing movie of all time is back in 3D, and although many people think 3D is an overused gimmick, that couldn’t be farther from the truth when James Cameron is responsible.

Plot
As the all-mighty Titanic starts its voyage, a love affair also begins to take off between Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet). Just as they begin to fall in love, the ship “God couldn’t even sink” collides with an iceberg. Now the new lovers and the other passengers must find a way to survive while the gigantic ship begins to sink below the North Atlantic Ocean.

Positives
James Cameron has created a top notch film, from the story to the overall look of the film; that’s been the case since Titanic was released back in 1997. The new focus this time around is the added 3D. If you haven’t noticed, when director James Cameron uses 3D, he uses it to enhance the picture. The obvious example for that is Cameron’s even more successful film, Avatar. You’ll rarely see things popping out at you and that’s perfectly fine. Cameron’s attention to detail is really noticeable with the added 3D. From the facial expressions of the actors to the water drops splashing off their soaked clothes, everything is much clearer thanks to the 3D. With all that said, you still have a feel of the original with a touch of graininess still in the picture. It’s really noticeable in the scene where the third-class passengers throw a party below deck.

As was the case when Titanic was originally released, DiCaprio and Winslet were the perfect two people for their roles. Their chemistry really took over the film and brought it to another level. I also must add that it definitely wasn’t a problem to have to look at Kate Winslet for a little more than three hours.

Negatives
While I believe Titanic to be a great film, it does have a few flaws, one being its running time. I must admit that when my mom and I saw this movie on Easter Sunday, the three hours flew by, but for other people, three hours is just too long. However, I’m also not saying some time should have been cut off, because this “flaw” is needed for the film to be as great as it is.

Lastly, as great as the movie is and DiCaprio and Winslet are together, it’s still kind of hard to believe such strong love between two people can be created so quickly. That strong love led to some dialogue that is so cheesy that you might cringe a bit. I know Rose’s unhappiness helped speed up the process but even with that, it’s still kind of hard to believe.

Last Words
Some movies shouldn’t have remakes or sequels and this is one of them. I thought that would have been a consensus thought until I found out there was a Titanic 2 (you can take a look at the embarrassing trailer here). While I feel Titanic shouldn’t ever be remade, James Cameron still found the best way to remake this popular film, which was to just enhance the picture quality of a great movie by carefully adding 3D. Cameron definitely impressed another viewer. His expertise left my mom walking out the theater uttering a quick statement, “I like 3D.”

RATING: 4/5

Courtesy of Google Images

Titanic was one of the most expensive movies ever made. It involved an enormous ship and a lot of CGI rendering. It also had some great actors. When the chance came to see the movie in theaters again (where I had previously only seen it on a TV), I decided that just once, 3D would be worth it (I generally despise that gimmick). But alas I was wrong. Compared to my old VHS copy it was much better in terms of sound and picture quality. But, the 3D itself added nothing, in those special moments it’s look wasn’t improved at all.

I am not a fan of 3D. I don’t think it adds anything to a film and it is quite irritating. Watching through those new style 3D glasses is like watching a movie through a View-Master. While I enjoyed that toy as a kid, it’s not as fun for 3 ½ hours. I wished I were at home watching it so I could fast forward. I would have left, but they charged us insanely because of the stupid glasses. And also no matter what I’m charged I never walk out of a theater….

The first 3D movie I ever saw as a kid was Spy Kids 3. That movie used the 3D gimmick to its fullest extent. Multiple times a character’s arm or random objects were flying out of the screen and it was the coolest 90 minutes of my 11 year old life. It is also only one of 3 movies I have ever seen in 3D, and back then I actually thought that concept was cool. I saw both of James Cameron’s babies, Avatar and Titanic, in 3D. And although he knows how to make a visually spectacular film, his money grubbing fingers need to stay away from 3D.

I feel if you are going to use a gimmick like 3D, you should REALLY use it. Take a page out of the Spy Kids book and do silly things. If you aren’t into that, then here’s an idea, don’t do 3D at all. Today’s idea of what 3D should be is the most pointless thing I have ever seen. The 90’s technology that made Titanic’s special effects, looks even more fake now with the 3D effect. For most of the movie it was pretty obvious we were staring at green screen skies and water.

There were parts in the film where I jokingly reached out to grab the things in the film that came out of the screen, so there were a few moments like that. But I was disappointed that the iceberg wasn’t more impressive in this 3D adaptation, even with my belief that 3D doesn’t add anything. Apparently Kate Winslet made a comment that she wasn’t sure how she felt about being naked in 3D. Before seeing the movie I knew that scene wouldn’t come out at us. If indeed her breasts were more defined because of the effects, they would have needed to change the background music if you know what I mean, because that would have been a completely different mood.

I’ve only seen this film a few times, but I remember all the crucial moments (there are a lot of them). But I don’t remember the contrasting clip of the smoking room with all the richies while Jack and Rose were dancing irish jigs in the ship’s basement. Nor do I remember Hockley leaving the child (that he saved for his own selfish ends), to attend to another boat (once again for his own selfish end I assume). I also think there were some shots we could have lived with out. Honestly how many times did we need to see somebody slide down the boat deck or see a rich snob ask for overly attentive service during a clearly stressful time.

When this movie came out I was 5. I have watched it a couple times over the years since then, and each time I notice something I didn’t before. As I got older I obviously realized that Rose and Jack weren’t naked in the car because it was hot in there. I noticed this time that there were hints that Rose and Hockley’s loveless engagement might have actually included sex, or attempted sex on Hockley’s part (more likely the latter). I was floored, how had I not noticed this? The hints were: Hockley gives her the necklace, he suggestively asks her to give her “heart to him.” Also after her night among the drunken below deck dwellers, he tells her he expected her to come to him that night. And when he gets mad at her during that talk he refers to her as his wife in practice if not by law, and that there is a certain way a woman must honor her husband. This gnawed at me so I checked my copy of the movie to see if those moments were in there or if they had been added for the 3D version. And….they were! As were the other small clips that I swore were new. I’m honestly embarrassed that I never noticed these things. And back when I thought they were new clips, I personally felt we didn’t need them. The Rose/Hockley loveless sex sub plot was interesting, but unnecessary because I think it would be better that Rose never obliged him since she always brushed him off in every other avenue.

While I firmly believe that the 3D addition to this film was pointless, everything else about the quality was good. Also, bringing a 15 year old mega film back to the big screen was a great idea. There are other films from the past like 2001: A Space Odyssey or something like the Godfather films (1 and 2 only!) that would be perfect to view on the big screen again, a fine way to introduce younger people to older classics, and would be great money grabbing opportunities. But, and this isn’t a suggestion it is flat out begging, IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE IN 3D! I PUT THIS IN CAPS, SO NO MOVIE BIG WIG WHO READS THIS CAN CLAIM THEY DIDN’T SEE IT!

At first I thought Titanic 3D was a waste of my time no debate. But after I posted this review the first time, I dug out my old VHS copy and searched for the places that surprised me. Being that my VHS copy is in fact old, the sound has worn out and the picture isn’t as vibrant as the new version. While the sound is obvious, if I hadn’t just watched Titanic remastered in theaters would I have even noticed the inferior picture quality of the 1997 version? Quite possibly investing in a remastered DVD copy of this would have suited me fine and I wouldn’t have needed to see it in theaters.

First, despite the fact that this is primarily a blog of reviews, I am NOT going to review TItanic, the 1997 blockbuster now released in 3D. I am instead going to say that the remastered 3D version of the movie is simply spectacular, especially if seen in IMAX where the spectacular becomes exquisite.

The re-release of the picture also demonstrates so very clearly why this is a motion picture that needs to be seen on a giant movie screen (hopefully, the larger the better) and not on your television, iPhone, or iPad.

There it is: larger than life; underwater and above, sweeping across smokestacks, and running through boiler rooms. And the movie magic takes over once the Titanic scrapes the iceberg and the combination live-action and CGI-wizardry comes to life for the last hour of the movie.

In 3D, the water simply glistens, both inside and outside. In lovingly remastered shots the focus clearly draws the eye exactly where Cameron wants it to go. Rivets pop at you; bubbles burst around you; and it all reminds you of why this movie was the Box Office and Academy Awards champ that it was. Sure, there is plenty to quibble about — there is the sappy love story (which seems less irritating now than it did 15 years ago); there is the Celine Dion song that nobody wants to hear ever again in their lives (although its orchestral variations throughout the movie serve their purpose to manipulate emotion just as they should); and there is the haunting but manipulative “nearer my God to thee” sequence while babies are put to sleep over bedtime stories and Monets and Degas float away. Yet its haunting in its beauty.

If you have seen it before, by all means rest assured that it looks even better in this 3D version. If you have never seen it out of spite, this is a good time to go see it, and take a look at that technical feat that Cameron and his crew accomplished with this movie 15 years ago that seems it hasn’t aged a day. If you were too young to have seen it in movie theaters, what are you waiting for: this out-Potters and out-Games any of the current blockbusters. And if you have only seen it on tv, then you have not seen TITANIC. Go right now.

I recall seeing this several times when it came out, one of the few movies I have ever seen in a movie theater more than once. And I feel the same way today — I have already purchased another IMAX ticket for tomorrow. Its a sweeping, dramatic, and stunning work of film that needs to be seen on that big screen, the way most of us originally saw it many years ago.

This spectacular epic re-creates the ill-fated maiden voyage of the White Star Line’s $7.5 million R.M.S Titanic and the tragic sea disaster of April 15, 1912. This film spans over the course of three hours, but never lets go of your focused attention. From it’s attention to detail art direction, to the perfect timing of the ship’s sinking to the films actual running time, Titanic has been the most expensive film at the time of it’s release and the most successful beaten only by Cameron’s space epic “Avatar”. Though being 15 years old, this film remains fresh and immovable from the minds of those that witnessed it’s grandeur on opening weekend. Relieve this acclaimed romantic epic this weekend and experience it in James Cameron’s version of 3D!

There has been quite the buzz surrounding the re-release of Titanic, this time in 3D, and I must adm

There has been quite the buzz surrounding the re-release of Titanic, this time in 3D, and I must admit that I too would like to see this classic movie with the addition of stunning 3D effects! In honor of Titanic hitting theaters again today, Buzzfeed has a list of the “28 Things You Never Knew” about the movie from IMDb. Did you know that Kate Winslet and Leonardo Decaprio were not the first choice actors to play the lead roles? I betcha they are still pretty happy to be ‘second choice’ actors in the roles that catapulted both their movie careers! Here’s the list of 28 things….

“28 Things You Never Knew” about Titanic

1. The studios wanted Matthew McConaughey to play Jack, but James Cameron insisted on Leonardo DiCaprio.

2. Gloria Stuart was the only person who worked in the production of the film who was actually living in 1912. With her nomination for Best Supporting Actress at age 87, Gloria Stuart became the oldest person to ever be nominated for an Oscar.

3. On the final night of shooting in Nova Scotia, one or more pranksters mixed PCP (angel dust) into the clam chowder served to the cast and crew. 80 people were taken ill, many hospitalized with hallucinations.

4. Reba McEntire was offered and had accepted the role of Molly Brown, but due to later schedule conflicts, had to turn it down.

5. Kate Winslet was one of the few actors who didn’t want to wear a wetsuit during the water scenes; as a result, she got pneumonia.

6. The cost to construct the ship in 1910-1912 was $7.5 million which was about $120 to $150 million in 1997 dollars. The movie cost $200 million to make.

7. Titanic was the first film to be released on video while it was still being shown in theaters.

8. Rose, in her old age, owns a Pomeranian. A Pomeranian was one of only three dogs known to have survived the disaster. As the real ship sank, a passenger freed dogs from their kennels and a survivor later recalled a French bulldog swimming in the ocean. James Cameron filmed scenes portraying the doomed animals but cut them.

9. James Cameron originally wanted Enya to compose the score for the film and even went so far as to assemble a rough edit using her music. When Enya declined, Cameron hired James Horner.

10. James Cameron drew all the pictures in Jack’s sketchbook. In fact, the hands seen sketching Rose wearing the necklace are not Jack’s but Cameron’s.

11. The elderly couple seen hugging on the bed while water floods their room are the owners of Macy’s department store in New York; Ida and Isidor Strauss, both of whom died on the Titanic. Ida was offered a seat on a lifeboat but refused so that she could stay with her husband saying, “As we have lived together, so we shall die together.” There was a scene filmed that depicted this moment but was cut from the final version.

12. Gwyneth Paltrow was up for the role of Rose. Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Jodie Foster, Cameron Diaz and Sharon Stone were all considered for Rose as well.

13. After finding out that she had to be naked in front of Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet decided to break the ice, and when they first met, she flashed him.

14. The “full-size” ship exterior set was constructed in a tank on a beach south of Rosarito, Baja California,Mexico. The entire set was mounted on hydraulic jacks and could be tilted up to 6° intact within the depth of the tank.

16. Most of the ocean which extras were jumping into was 3 feet deep.

17. In the scene where the water comes crashing into the Grand Staircase room, the film makers only had one shot at it because the entire set and furnishings were going to be destroyed in the shot.

18. The “ale” in the below decks party was actually root beer.

19. Robert De Niro was offered the role of Captain Smith but turned it down due to a gastrointestinal infection at the time.

20. Most of the stuntmen in the engine room scenes were only about 5 feet tall to make the engine room look a lot bigger.

21. James Cameron went on the dives to the real Titanic himself, and found it an overwhelming emotional experience to actually see it. He ended up spending more time with the ship than its living passengers did.

22. After James Cameron finished the script, he discovered that there had been a real “J. Dawson” who died aboard the Titanic. Today, his grave stone (#227) is the most widely visited in the cemetery.

23. Most of the decor on the ship was either reconstructed by or under the supervision of researchers of the White Star Line, the original company which constructed and furnished the Titanic.

24. James Cameron was adamant about not including any song in the film.

25. Composer James Horner secretly arranged with lyricist Will Jennings and singer Céline Dion to write “My Heart Will Go On” and record a demo tape which he then presented to Cameron, who responded very favorably and included the song over the closing credits.

26.Paramounthad to send out replacement reels to theaters who had literally worn out their copies.

27. The most expensive first-class suite on the Titanic cost $4,350, the equivalent of about $75,000 today.

28. Titanic was the first film James Cameron ever directed that did not include or mention nuclear weapons.

In this film image released by Paramount Pictures, a scene is shown from 3-D version of James Camero

LONDON: “Titanic” director James Cameron said the 3D version of his 1997 blockbuster, released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the luxury liner, “turns up” the experience of the original.

He also denied suggestions that the film, which hits US and British theatres on April 6, was a way of cashing in on the tragedy, which happened on April 15, 1912 with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.

“I just think it makes it more immersive,” Cameron said of the 3D re-make. “It kind of turns up the experience to 11 instead of 10,” he told reporters late on Tuesday at the red carpet world premiere held at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Titanic, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, earned more than $1.8 billion at the global box office.

Before inflation is taken into account, it is second only to Cameron’s 3D sci-fi adventure “Avatar”, which grossed $2.8 billion, in the all-time ticket sale rankings.

Cameron, who has just returned from a solo dive to the deepest point in the ocean, defended his decision to re-release Titanic in 3D format.

“Look, there’s always going to be people that can piss in the soup of anything good,” he told reporters, when asked if he was capitalizing on the Titanic tragedy and its upcoming anniversary.

“But frankly I think that remembering Titanic, remembering the history – that’s what the film was there for. That’s why I made it, you know.

“I was fascinated by the story, I was fascinated by the history, the people that were heroic, the people that lost their lives. I was genuinely touched by the tragedy when I was there at the wreck.

“I think the film is a good focusing agent for that at this time when we should be remembering the wreck and its message, the disaster and its message for all of us.”

For British actress Winslet, who shot to fame after appearing in the original, the 3D experience was a strange one.

“It’s weird,” she told Reuters. “I mean, it is like being forced to go through a photo album of your former self for three and a half hours solidly. It’s quite strange you know.”

Asked how she felt about watching herself on screen in 3D during the film’s more intimate moments, she replied:

“Oh terrible! Wouldn’t you? I am not going to look. I’ll be in the bar by that point I expect – or on the floor!”

DiCaprio did not attend the premiere as he was shooting new movie “Django Unchained”, directed by Quentin Tarantino, in the United States.

In the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter, the dream duo open up about the making of the upcoming film about the FBI’s controversial first leader.

J. Edgar, the biopic about J. Edgar Hoover, the legendary and controversial first head of the FBI, almost didn’t get made. Despite a script by Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black and the backing of producer Brian Grazer, the film failed to get a green light at Universal when Grazer brought it to the studio. That’s when the producer enlisted the help of Clint Eastwood, whose consistent ability to deliver Oscar-worthy work on a budget made his involvement a virtual green light at Warner Bros.

“With Clint, it’s a really unique thing,” Grazer observes. “They don’t use the two-letter word; they don’t say no. What they say is, ‘Yeah, let’s do it but let’s try to do it at a good price.”

Stephen Galloway, THR‘s executive editor, features, talked with the major players behind J. Edgar, including star Leonardo DiCaprio, and turned up some surprising insights into how both the octogenarian Oscar-winning director and his leading man got the film made.

THE EPIC STORY WHICH COVERS 50 YEARS WAS MADE FOR JUST $35 MILLION
On Feb. 7, production on the 128-page script started in downtown Los Angeles and the Warner and Paramount backlots. The small budget and 39-day shoot put enormous pressure on the cast and crew. In one case, when a house is bombed, the whole set had to be transformed within an hour. “It went from an unscathed building into a bombed-out one during the dinner break,” says production designer James Murakami.

LEONARDO DICAPRIO SLASHED HIS FEE FROM $20 MILLION TO $2 MILLION
“He could have made a lot of money just doing spectacle movies with all kinds of CGI,” says Eastwood of his first-time collaborator, who at 36 is 45 years his junior. “But he wants to vary his career, like I’ve always looked to vary mine as a director.”

CLINT EASTWOOD PERFORMED FIGHT SCENES FOR HIS MUCH YOUNGER ACTORS
To teach DiCaprio and Armie Hammer (who plays Hoover’s longtime partner Clyde Tolson) how to perform a scene in which they get into an all-out brawl, the 81-year-old director decided to show them himself. “Clint was there with one of his stunt-guy friends, Buddy Van Horn, and they put on an impromptu fight scene for us,” Hammer marvels. “There’s Buddy standing in the middle of the room and Clint says, ‘I think it should be something like this’ — and he explodes into Clint Eastwood the fighter and they start smacking each other around and rolling on the floor. And then Clint just gets up and says, ‘OK, something like that.’”

STORY: ‘J. Edgar’ Q&A: Clint Eastwood

LEONARDO DICAPRIO SAT HOURS IN THE MAKEUP CHAIR TO PORTRAY OLDER HOOVER
“We discussed the idea of relying on visual effects to make it easier for the actors,” says producer Robert Lorenz. “But Leo was insistent; he wanted to be sure it was going to look right.” Both makeup artist Sian Grigg and Hammer marveled at DiCaprio’s intense prep: he spent hours every day walking and talking with fake teeth, a nose stretcher, aging makeup and a skull cap.

EASTWOOD SOUGHT ASSISTANCE FROM HIS FORMER CONGRESSMAN, LEON PANETTA
The director pored over each controversial aspect of Hoover’s life with Black, repeatedly questioning him on sourcing. He also drew on his friendship with then-CIA chief Leon Panetta to arrange a private dinner with FBI director Robert Mueller. Eastwood and Black discussed injections Hoover allegedly received when he was older. “The FBI had a problem with that in the script,” Black notes. “Clint wanted to know about it. But it was not uncommon at the time to have a little amphetamine-vitamin boost.”

STORY: ‘J. Edgar’ Q&A: Leonardo DiCaprio

EASTWOOD ISN’T SURE IF HOOVER WAS A CROSS-DRESSER
“Along the way, people accused him of [that],” Eastwood notes. “But nobody knows how accurate it was. Evidently the woman who accused him of that, her husband had been sent to the slammer by Hoover. So you don’t know how much was vengeance.” Eastwood himself believes “there is a certain amount of truth” to all the allegations, but wanted to retain some ambiguity. One scene in the film shows Hoover wearing his mother’s dress.

BUT DICAPRIO AS HOOVER DOES HAVE A GAY KISS
Neither Eastwood nor DiCaprio has drawn any conclusions about Hoover sexuality. “Whether he was gay remains to be seen,” Eastwood says. “But [he and Clyde Tolson] were inseperable buddies. Was that becase he didn’t trust anybody else or was it a love story? I think they had a great affection; whether it was gay or not, I don’t know.” DiCaprio elaborates, “What you cannot doubt is that Clyde Tolson and he had a relationship that spanned most of their life; they lived with each other, had lunch and dinner, and [Hoover] left everything to Clyde. Unarguably, they were partners in some sense.” The film depicts Tolson aggressively kissing Hoover on the mouth at the end of their fistfight.

DICAPRIO IS EXCITED ABOUT ‘TITANIC’ IN 3D
“I haven’t seen the 3D [version] at all yet; I am scheduled to — I hear it’s going to be fantastic,” DiCaprio says. “Jim [Cameron] called me personally to tell me this was going to happen. I said, “Cool! I can’t wait.” There’s nobody who can do it better.”

EASTWOOD’S WAITING FOR BEYONCE’S BABY
The director’s remake of A Star Is Born has been delayed, since its star, Beyonce, is having a baby. “Until early next year, she’ll be on that project,” Eastwood says. “But we are going to do it later, in the early summer.”
