Just came back from Goa yesterday. When someone tells you they have been to Goa, what they actually mean is they have visited beaches and places in Goa, as Goa is a state, albeit a very small one.

We were a group of 8 friends who drove through Tumkur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Ranebennur, Haveri, Hubli, Yellapura, Ankola, Karwar to reach Goa. The whole stretch can be done in approximately 10 to 12 hours. The road is very good till Tumkur, sucks from Chitradurga till Haveri, gets better once you cross Haveri. But, we Camped in Hubli and started the next day. Beyond Yellapura you will have to drive through thick forests and descend the western ghat, to reach Karwar. This part of the stretch has some sharp curves and is deserted, save for a few trucks here and there. Also keep one thing in mind, once you cross Tumkur there are no good restaurants on the highway. Either you have to pack your own food or drive into one of the towns on the way. The police at Karnataka Goa border harassed my friend Gowda saying show me the original RC book and took 50 rupees as “entry fee” (read it as bribe).

Our first stop was Palolem, a beach in Canacona district of Goa, approximately 20 kms from Karwar. Palolem looks more European than Indian as it is abuzz with white skin. The place has a lot of options to stay, but a couple of ones that we enquired were full. We finally wound up staying in Om Stays which is a line of huts(tiled huts not thatched) with attached bathroom and toilet located 5 minutes away by walk from the beach. The place was neat for 500 rupees per hut. Some of the huts had TV and hot water while others did not. The owner was a very friendly chap who provided us with extra beds and gave us a quick run down of Palolem. We were the only ones in that place and we took 3 huts. I talked to the owner regarding the rates and he informed me that 500 rupees was the off season rate. During season, it varies from 1000 rupees to 1500 rupees, 2000 rupees during new year. The tourist season in Goa is supposed to start from October 15 and peaks during the new year time.

Palolem beach

I found Palolem beach serene and charming, with an ample mix of commercialisation and village charm. On the south side of the beach there are two out crops. I guess during high tide this is surrounded by water. One of the posters I read on the way refered to them as Venus island. The view from the out crops is breath taking and I could have sat there for hours in solitude listening to the chirping birds and the sound of the sea. I have no idea how it is during the peak season as, hut construction was going on through out the beach and the out crops, to be ready by the peak season. There are lots of shops on the way to the beach selling everything from toilet paper to clothing.

Palolem, Southern tip

We had a ball of a time in Palolem playing beach volleyball, football and swimming. We were by the beach till 3 in the morning and no one came and enforced discipline on us. Also there are two bars on the beach side which are open 24 hours and also there is a Baskin Robbins ice cream shop which is open till one in the night.

Approximately 15 kilometres from Palolem there is another beach called Agonda which was deserted save for a single family and a couple at the time of our visit. You can see rocks jutting out from the sea and the beach ends with a majestic hill on either side. There is a fort called Cabo De Rama which is at approximately 10 kilometers from Agonda. We reached Cabo De Rama late, so we could not explore it completely but the view of the sea from the fort was heavenly. We spent some thirty minutes there monkeying around. The resort owner informed us that the sun rise and sun set from the fort is something not to be missed. The fort is surrounded by a deep moat and we were afraid as to whether the fort closes at night. So I went and enquired at the nearby bar regarding this and the person there assured me that it was open 24/7. The drive from Palolem to Cabo-De-Rama was scenic and the twilight added to the magic.

After 2 days in Palolem we headed to Panjim, capital of Goa. The road to Panjim was good, in general we found all the roads in Goa smooth with good direction boards. After a brief stop over in Panjim we headed to Calangute beach some 15 kilometres from Panjim. This beach sucked with crass commercialisation, crowd and garbage. I remembered Juhu beach. We had food in a hotel called Sagar near the beach and started hunting for a place to stay. We split into two groups with one group heading towards Anjuna while the other explored Baga for accommodation. We finally settled down for a place called Lua Nuva in Baga. Since it was off season, the proprietor agreed to rent out the room for 1800. It had AC but TV was not working and there was a small pool where we had a ball of a time the next day. The advantage of staying at Lua Nuva was that it was very close to Titos street, the happening street of Baga.

We wanted to explore the night life of Baga, so we headed towards Titos, a famous night club, which was our planned destination for the night. But to our disappointment we found out that it was open only during the weekends. It’s sister concern Mambos allowed only couples inside. After this let down we roamed Titos street up and down hopping in and out of lots of places. Lots of guys approached us with offers of disco parties. The usual deal was, for 300 rupees they supply you with an escort for the club and she stays with you until you come out. We did not go with this shady deal.

Next day we checked out Aguada fort which was buzzing with tourists. We were under the impression that this was the fort featured in the movie Dil Chahta Hai but later we came to know that we were wrong. From one side of the fort you get to view the grand sea. On the base of the hill where the fort is situated there is road that leads to a small beach by the Taj resort. Ahead of this beach, there is a path by the side of the mountain base which snakes towards the top. It was drizzling slightly and I had very slippery sandals on my feet. The verdant cliff, the raging sea, the overcast sky, the slight drizzle and the slippery ground made the trek a very enjoyable experience. If you have deep enough packets stay at the Aguada Taj resort. The view from the resort is splendid but starts from 16,000 rupees and goes till 60,000. Later we tried the cruise at Panjim. It costed 130 per head and lasted almost an hour. I would not recommend it to any one.

Next day we checked out Anjuna beach which actually has a very small stretch. Since it was raining heavily there were not many tourists around, but the place was buzzing with hawkers. We spent maybe ten minutes there and started towards Vagator to check out Chapora fort where the fort scene of Dil Chahta Hai was actually shot. En route for a brief period we stopped at Vagator beach. One has to endure a pretty steep climb to reach the fort, but the climb is worth every calorie you burn. The fort is surrounded by the majestic sea on two sides and you get a spectacular view of Morjim, Arambol beaches. Even though we did not visit these beaches, the view from the fort convinced me to make this visit mandatory the next time I visit Goa. There is a jutting in the hill, like a wharf, where you can walk to the edge of the cliff, like a diver going down a plank, for a jump into the pool. We sat there for sometime chatting and taking in the majestic sea. After this we headed back.

Since it was off season and rains accompanied us most of the time there were not too many people around. Also the hotel prices were really cheap when compared to the tourist season rates. Out of all the beaches we visited I found Palolem serene and tranquil, where one can spend time at his own pace. Have to experience Goa during the peak season.

It was a Saturday morning and Julie’s first assignment of the quarter was to attend an art exhibit, the Roberts and Tilton gallery. After 10 minutes of thorough appreciation for what the artist had to offer, we got hungry. Since we were in Culver City, I remembered a commercial that I had seen late at night about a white moustache man trying to sell his tacos, his apparent name was Tito, and he had a little taco stand. After horribly trying to figure out how to work Julie’s Magellan navigation system, we ended up 4 blocks away at Tito’s Tacos!

The first thing we both noticed was that parking wasn’t the easiest thing to get. We had to circle around the area twice and even then, I feel like we got lucky because we were there at the right time when someone left.

After getting out of the car, the other thing we noticed immediately was that the lines were long, like Black-Friday long. However, despite the long lines, they move pretty quickly due to the fact that Tito’s Tacos has multiple cashiers with multiple windows for service. We walked up, waited for maybe 10 minutes and started ordering.

The prices that I saw personally weren’t too bad for what they were, and Julie agreed, so we went ahead and argued about what to order. We then decided to be fat and order a sampling of the entire menu, or at least the more common food items people tend to order. We got 2 beef tacos (which they only have beef by the way), an enchilada, a beef + cheese burrito, and a chicken tamale.

When we got our food, I bit into the taco and realized that it was pretty good, but I’ve had better in my hometown of Santa Ana. The enchilada on the other hand, wow, I almost had a heart attack eating it. When you open it, you notice right away that there’s a layer of oil on top, to them extra flavor I guess. If your cautious about your health, then I suggest you don’t even smell this thing. The burrito was very messy because it wasn’t normal dry beef filling, but it seemed like it was simmered in a chile sauce all day. Overall I think it could have been better, it was sorta bland and mushy….Julie agrees with me The last item we had was the chicken tamale, I thought I thought it needed more salt and pepper and just more flavor period. It was very bland to say the least and the masa was very dry.

There was a disagreement between Julie and I and it was the Tito’s guacamole. I like it, Julie thought it was okay. When you first open it, you’ll notice that it’s not the traditional thick guac that you are use to, but rather a more loose concoction. It tastes like traditional guacamole, but lacks texture. I think it’s a hit or miss in terms of whether you think its appealing to you or not, but you can judge for yourself when you try.

Overall, we both think Tito’s Tacos is worth trying once to enjoy what they have to offer for their tacos. The rest of the stuff is very uninspiring and I’m sure you can find a lot better elsewhere at mom and pop shops…so if you’re in the area looking at art or for whatever reason, give it a try. After all, Tito did produce, write, and direct a commercial for us.

Jesús Nazareno, el Expolio de Jesús, el Santísimo Cristo de la Agonía, La Lanzada, el Descendimiento de Cristo, La Piedad, el Grupo del Santo Entierro, el Cristo Yacente, Santa María Magdalena, San Juan Evangelista y la Santísima Virgen de la Soledad, acompañados de cientos de penitentes en el que destaca el riguroso orden, y la solemnidad del acompasado paso de los tercios al ritmo de las marchas pasionales, realzan los bellos tronos, cuajados de flor y luz, en una procesión en la que los cofrades morados ponen el listón en la máxima altura. Jara, Aire, e Iglesia de Santa María donde será cantado el tradicional Miserere.

 I’ve been taste testing bloody marys all over town and Austin knows how to do ‘em up right. Cuatros and Taverna make them semi-spicy with Zing Zang bloody mary mix.

The taste of the drink really depends on how the bartender mixes it up .But I think the key is less worcester, lots of spice, olives and celery.

Hands down best bloody mary in town goes to.. Trudy’s.

We received this very cute photo today of little Titos and his friend. Titos was saved by ERF as he was awaiting being sent to the butcher and was later adopted by Lisa & her family. What a lucky boy he is and what a good example of  a donkey pair bond!

TUESDAY, 12/9: Drink Local Night at The Monarch, 6–9 pm

A celebration of locally made spirits featuring the ultimate Drink Local Cocktail Contest produced by Tipsy Texans David Alan and Joe Eifler, searching for the best seasonal cocktail from the finest mixologists. Meet your local distillers and sample their favorite holiday season cocktails. Cocktail contest starts at 7 pm.
Participating distillers: Dripping Springs Vodka, Lone Star Distillery, Paula’s Texas Spirits, Pepe’s Z Tequila, Treaty Oak Rum, Tito’s Vodka and Savvy Vodka.
Food for the event will be provided by the Austin chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier, an international service organization of distinguished women professionals in the food, wine, and hospitality industries. They’ll prepare hors d’oeuvres from Cooking with Les Dames d’Escoffier: At Home with the Women Who Shape the Way We Eat and Drink. The 2008 cookbook, which includes favorite recipes from members Julia Child, MFK Fisher, Marcella Hazan and Alice Waters along with dozens of other Dames, will be available at the event. A percentage of sales go to Austin Dames’ scholarships for local women culinary students and to support Urban Roots.

Second on Sixth is StrataTX’s annual Anniversary Party. The networking/social group for creatives in the arts, culture, and economy (that’s what the “about” says on the website …) uses this event to drive membership for the upcoming year. Hosted at Este (2235 East 6th Street), this event features free food and drinks and is great for networking, meeting new folks, and seeing a variety of different forms of art, including:

En junio de 2001 fue presentada en Barcelona una campaña cívica para conseguir la prohibición de los medicamentos fabricados con fenilpropanolamina. La campaña la promoviían familiares y amigos de Rafaela Titos, que murió en Badalona de un paro cardíaco una hora después de consumir el medicamento Vincigrip, conocido antigripal. El 12 de diciembre de 2000 el Consejo General de Colegios Oficiales Farmacéuticos informó a los profesionales sobre la peligrosidad de este principio activo a la espera de informes de la Agencia Española del Medicamento. La agencia no retiró el producto de la venta. Otros fármacos tienen características similares al Vincigrip de Salvat, como Aspirina Complex, de Bayer; Comtrex Congespirin, de Upsa Médica; Coricidin Fuerte, de Schering Plough; Day Nuerse Durasina, de Smith Kline Beecham; Farmagripine, de Cinfa; Frenaseltz, de Abello Farmacia; Irritos, de Faes; Novag Grip, de Novag; Rinoretard, de Pfizer Consumer Health Care; Triominic, de Novartis Pharma; Senioral, de Belmac; y Ornade, de Kern. Existían claros riesgos de sufrir hemorragia cerebral. En Estados Unidos se comprobó que la fenilpropanolamina aumentó en algunos enfermos el riesgo de sufrir accidentes cerebrovasculares. La Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recomendó en su día prohibir la venta de los productos farmacéuticos que tuvieran fenilpropanolamina. En diversos países de Latinoamérica como Costa Rica, Brasil o México se retiraron hasta 60 productos con esta sustancia. La campaña contra el uso de fenilpropanolamina ha surtido efecto. Al menos en parte. En el verano de 2001 las empresas cuyos productos contenían esta sustancia acordaron cambiar la composición, “aunque sin citar los efectos nocivos de sus fármacos”, argumenta uno de los afectados. “Ahora estos medicamentos, que mantienen el nombre, llevan psudoefedrina, una de las sustancias que aparece en las listas de productos prohibidos por facilitar el dopaje”, continúa esta persona. Estos ciudadanos continúan recogiendo información pues, según ellos, “todo parece indicar que no ha habido cambios sustanciales con respecto al problema planteado con la fenilpropanolamina”. Desde la Agencia Española del Medicamento emiten informaciones contradictorias pues han afirmado que los productos con fenilpropanolamina “siguen comercializándose en el estado español porque nosotros no hemos tenido constancia de que haya habido ningún muerto relacionado con ellos”. Pero sí tenían constancia. Según publicaba la revista Integral (Integral, Número 261; septiembre 2001. Página 14: Antigripales bajo sospecha, firmado por César Barba), Ramón Palop, subdirector general de Seguridad de la Agencia Española del Medicamento, manifestaba que “Este es el único caso notificado en España”, en referencia al caso de Rafaela Titos.

This event is going to be badass all around. Sunday afternoon saw Miki and I taking a break from finishing the Art Gallery and heading down to Tito’s on Mojacar playa where my good friend Clive Sarstedt was performing his weekly gig, aided by Maurice, a Madagascan by birth, and a long-time Mojacar resident.

Pop historians amongst you may remember Clive as Robin Sarstedt, who climbed to Number 3 in the UK charts in the mid-70’s with “My resistance is low”. He’s had a long career in the business, firstly under the name Wes sands, when he was produced by the legendary Joe Meek. He also recorded some of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s first songs under the same name. All his early stuff is featured on CD anthologys commemorating Lloyd Weber and Meek.

Clive is one of three singing brothers, the eldest being Eden Kane, who enjoyed a string of Top 5 hits in the early 60’s and went on to feature in lavish shows in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe, eventually appearing on the screen regularly in several of the Star trek franchises.

Clive’s other brother, Peter Sarstedt, is responsible for writing and performing the worldwide hit “Where do you go to my lovely” – and indeed Clive liberally laces his repertoire with both his own and Peter’s classic compositions.

It’s a real treat to go down to Tito’s – run by ex-Californian Tito – and watch my mate work his magic. I have been known to get up and join him, but today, me and Miki were just chillin’ – leaning on the bar drinking my latte!

…and as you can see, both old AND young were enthralled!

Because the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau is who it is, it can host events like the upcoming Cocktail Throwdown that will crown an “official Austin cocktail.” Last year, Lambert’s owned the rights, this year KGSR’s Bryan Beck will host the competition, presented by PRA Destination Management, to name a new restaurant-bartender-drink the cocktail of our fair city.

Hosted at Threadgill’s, the event from 5:30-7pm is closed to the public (free booze for invitees!), but at 7:00pm doors open to everyone for a Greyhounds show and $2 Tito’s and Shiner … gotta love Texas-made alcohol.

Last night the Echoplex in Echo Park was ever so gracious to let us take over the place for six hours of dancing, drinking, Twister and more drinking. With “Sixteen Candles” projected on the wall, DJs Jamal Dauda and Jason Bentley spinning on the decks and a ginormous purple pony pinata, Juliana celebrated her birthday with tons of her closest friends.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and making it an unforgettable night. A big shout out to Bryan from Dewars, Matt from Tito’s Vodka and Heidi Richman for the distilled spirits and wine that kept the booze a flowing. And of course a HUGE thank you to Mitchell and Liz at the Echoplex and their amazing staff. Nic, Scott, Sarah – we couldn’t do it without you.

Last Friday we took Titos, the little donkey we rescued in March, to his new home in the Dordogne to live with his adoptive family Lisa and Paul. Titos has made a new friend in their donkey, Teddy and also their beautiful horse Cocoa. 

Apparently Titos has made his presence known with his extraordinary loud braying!

We would like to thank Lisa and Paul and their family for offering Titos such a fantastic home, (we know he’ll be overdosed on love!),  and we look forward to hearing all about his antics in due course.
