Oh! The joy I experienced from stumbling upon this tweet! This one tweet really captured the entire spirit of Black Friday! For those of you who can’t see the picture, it says, and I quote:

I’m gonna try to buy all the Chinese character and Arabic character domain names I can, and just sit on them.
Some Key Points:

Five years from now the internet will be dominated by Chinese-language content.

Today’s teenagers are the model of how the web will work in five years – they jump from app to app to app seamlessly.

Within five years there will be broadband well above 100MB in performance – and distribution distinctions between TV, radio and the web will go away.

“We can index real-time info now – but how do we rank it?”

UPDATE:

Here’s a report on the option to have non latin characters for domain names coming out next year.

I guess Eric Schmidt knew this was coming down the pipeline a while ago.

Shared online narratives are invaluable to artists, both aspiring and accomplished. Artists are able to truly connect with fans like never before thanks to a newfound ability to promote shows, take requests, obtain instant feedback, and hold exclusive online contests.

For musicians, the web allows their work to become highly accessible. As a result, fan bases grow. As these fans spread the word about their favorite artist, they become the hugely important “brand champions.” And so a relatively under-the-radar artist, such as Imogen Heap, multiplies her fan base exponentially.

Which brings us to Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Back in 2007, Reznor did the unthinkable (unthinkable for 2007, that is) and during a performance, unabashedly told fans to steal music via peer-to-peer sites. Then in 2008, he gave away the first part of his band’s album Ghosts to fans, encouraging them to share the rest of the album with others online. Also in 2008, Nine Inch Nails’ album The Slip debuted for free download in May 2008 on their website, an act that won Reznor the Webby Artist of the Year Award.

Reznor’s forays into Web 2.0 have gone far beyond music sharing. This past spring, he used his highly followed Twitter account to help raise $850,000 for an uninsured fan in need of a heart transplant. The band’s website even has a “remix” section that allows fans to download their songs, redo them to their heart’s content, and post them online. In April 2009, the band released its very own iPhone application, which provides super-fans access to the multimedia features on the band’s website, as well as another way to exchange real-time messages and photos with other fans.

In an unexpected development, Reznor announced via the band’s blog in June 2009 that he was pulling the plug on social networking and shutting down his Twitter account. ”I will be tuning out of the social networking sites because it’s now doing more harm than good,” he wrote. He commented that certain fans were grossing him out and driving him out. ”Looks like the Metal Sludge contingency has discover Twitter! Finally! For those of you that don’t know what this is, please let me explain. Metal Sludge is the home of the absolutely worst people I’ve ever come across. It’s populated mainly by unattractive plump females who publicly fantasize about having sex with guys in bands.”

This was a blow to the Twitter community, as one of its pioneers completely turned his back, referring to the online population as a largely anonymous, celebrity-obsessed, amorphous mob.

By Erin Kutz – Thu Jun 4, 2009 7:56PM EDT

BOSTON (Reuters) – A tiny fraction of those who use the fast-growing social network phenomenon Twitter generate nearly all the content, a Harvard study shows. That makes it hard for companies to use the micro-blogging site as an accurate gauge of public opinion, the Harvard Business School study showed.

Twitter Inc is a social networking website in which users post messages of 140 characters or less — known as “tweets” — that can be viewed by other users who elect to follow them. The Harvard study examined public entries of a randomly selected group of 300,000 Twitter users. The researchers studied in May the content created in the lifetime of the users’ Twitter accounts. It found that 10 percent of Twitter users generated more than 90 percent of the content, said Mikolaj Jan Piskorski, who led the research.

More than half of all Twitter users post messages on the site less than once every 74 days. The median number of lifetime “tweets” per user is just one, according the research. Companies are increasingly turning to Twitter to improve their understanding of how consumers view them, he said. But some users are far more active and vocal than others, limiting information gleaned from messages on the site, said Piskorski, an assistant professor of strategy at Harvard Business School. “If you’re trying to get what a representative cross-section of the public is thinking, you’re probably better off staying away from Twitter,” he said in an interview.

Piskorski said Twitter could still be useful in responding to specific customer concerns. It can also be effective marketing, as companies with Twitter accounts can advertise sales and deals to users who follow them on the site. JetBlue Airways Corp, Comcast Corp and Dell Inc are among companies with Twitter accounts. JetBlue provides information on Twitter such as announcements of terminal changes at airports and tips on how to pack and directly answers customers’ questions. Dell uses Twitter to point customers to discounts. Comcast’s account largely responds to customer gripes.

“Enough of our customers are talking about their interactions with us that we get a decent sample of what’s going on on a daily basis that we wouldn’t necessarily get from other long-term studies,” JetBlue spokesman Morgan Johnston said in a telephone interview. Unlike other social networking sites like Facebook.com, men are almost twice as likely to follow other men on Twitter than they were to follow women, according to the study.

Women were also more likely to follow men than they were to follow other female users. Piskorski said the study did not indicate whether this was because women were asked less often to be followed or because women are more selective in accepting followers. Follow up research to these findings will likely be released later this month, he said. According to recent data compiled by Nielsen Online, which measures Internet traffic, Twitter’s website had more than 7 million unique visitors in February, compared to 475,000 in February 2008.
I am an open networker on LinkedIn. This means that I am open to all network invitations and I agre

I am an open networker on LinkedIn. This means that I am open to all network invitations and I agree to not DNK (Do not know) or Spam an invitation. This also brings many interesting invitations and profiles into my inbox to review. Tonight was one of those nights. I had 600 invitations to review (and to be honest I still have 236). I am a choosy person and I want a network that is not only beneficial to me but to others in my contact list. I have compiled my least favorite profile attributes and just wanted to share:

A picture in worth a thousand words.
If you have no icon or picture how do I know who you are and why I should connect with you? Even worse, if your picture shows you posing in your favorite evening gown or in that bikini or (yes I have seen this) speedo you just loved I will more than likely not accept your invitation. Your picture should be somewhat professional. This is not a yearbook – this is a professional networking site.

Your opening line is my first impression.
What is your title? Is it something you thought about? Does it ask something of your network or share something about your creativity or specific skills? If I see a liquor store employee with a title of “wine and spirit expert” good chance I will accept that invitation. My favorite this week was a Mom who put her position as CFO of the Thompson Group. She is the Chief Family Officer of her family, the Thompsons. She also blogs and works for children’s rights. This is a person worth knowing. If on the other hand you have no title or it is one I cannot understand (ABC/LMNOP adviser at XYZ Company) then I have no idea of who you are or what I can do for you. Most likely I will pass.

Did you company just agree to cover a TopLinked membership?
In one day I received 27 invitations from one marketing company in Atlanta. Either they all just decided at the exact same time the investment was worth it or one person in the company joined and shared the list and they all reached out. Why do I need to know more than one of you? If you do not tell me in your invitation – then the most interesting one gets my accept and the rest go to archive.

You are out to grow a number, not a network.
Many people have come to understand how social networking works. If you have 1000 contacts on Facebook but you only talk to three – you really do not need 1000 contacts. If you have 800 Twitter followers but you never retweet or carry on conversations, you do not need to be on Twitter – you just want to hear yourself tweet. If you are in TopLinked to get 50K contacts , I know you are not talking to them or facilitating communications. If in your name you have LION5000+, I will pass on your invitation. You are more interested in a number than a network.

Your profile shares no information or has “private” on the company name.
I will not accept your invitation if you do not tell me what you do, where you have done this or what you are looking for. If you cannot or will not share your company name why are you on LinkedIn? Can you just say “secret government job that does not allow me to tell you” this may peak my interest. How about letting me know what you want in a network connection. If you cannot fill in your profile I have to wonder what you will have to contribute to my network.

These are just my top 5 pet peeves. IF you have more to share, pass them on.

A lot of people say they do not get Twitter. “Waste of time”, “Microblogging – so what”, “Just like texting – so” and many similar comments. First remember that

Lots od comment that Twitter does not work – it just wastes time! Dont’t believe it. Here is an extract from SeoAdviser …..

Twitter is expanding at a phenomenal rate – a whole new audience to market too. Yes, Twitter is a very effective business marketing tool.

One of our clients, 1st for French Property, have a twitter page with logo and contact information and link to their site. They publish new properties daily on their Twitter account. In addition, every time someone “follows” them they get a direct message (via SocialToo) with a reminder of 1st for French Property’s real website.

At the last look (25th Jan 2009), they (1st4FrenchProp) had 290 followers (not large by Twitter standards but growing) and this produced in the last week 32 visits with an average page view of 4.69 pages. Some established Twitter accounts have in excess of 15,000 followers – perhaps that would yield 1600 + additional visitors in a week?? Looking at Twitterholic – number 100, on the Twitter charts, has 13,000 followers; Barack O has over 100,000 followers. Seems like Twitter marketing could be a useful weapon.

What is Rejaw, you ask? It is another (yes, another) micro-blogging web site that competes against the likes of Twitter and Pownce – but this one has a couple tricks up its sleeve.

For one, it offers live messaging – no need to refresh the page here. This feature is killer for me, because I always found it annoying that I couldn’t just glance at the page every now and then, I’d have to refresh the entire page. When used, it reminds me a lot like instant messaging because of the instant feedback, which is both good and bad. It’s good because it allows for quick and seamless discussions between people. It’s bad because I can imagine some people using it as an IM client, with tons of messages back and forth, so you would end up receiving parts of their conversation if you are following them – a problem not faced by its other micro-blogging competitors. But honestly, that’s not really that bad of a situation, it just makes things a bit crazier. I can deal.

Another plus of Rejaw is that it has it’s own app (currently only for OS X, pictured above) called “RejawRadar”, which is well designed and simplistic. Its also nice that I don’t have to keep my browser open to see updates from people. It even integrates with Growl, making it seem very close to an actual instant messaging application. (Desktop apps obviously contradict my “refreshing issue” argument in the previous argument, but not everyone wants a desktop app.)

Also, you are able to quickly and easily find contacts that you may have on Facebook or Gmail. Unfortunately, as of current, I am the first of my friends to get it. I hope that soon changes, and plan to get a few others to try it in the near future.

Finally, the ability to have a simple reply area makes it a whole lot easier for me, personally. I don’t know what it is, but I’ve just never liked the way Twitter and others have their reply system with things like “@username” and such. The way Rejaw implements it seems much more comprehensible to my brain for some reason.

In the end, would I recommend it? Most definitely. The only reason I might even consider anywhere else would be for the larger user database. But keep in mind, Rejaw is an up-and-coming service. Heck, it doesn’t even have its own Wikipedia page yet! I sincerely hope this service grows and I have no doubt that it will.

Two thumbs up!

This is some crazy stuff.

I love twitter, but now its become like a virtual radio contest. Companies really need to take into consideration the power of Twitter.

I stopped in at Caribou before work to pick myself up a drink to get me through the day. I pulled into what I thought was fifteen minute parking, denoted by the 15 minute parking sign. After getting my drink, I pulled out and notice that painted into the parking spot was a handicap sign. So here’s where the confusion lies. Is it fifteen minute parking if you are not handicapped and then unlimited for handicapped people, or is it 15 minute parking for handicapped people? The last one makes me a giggle a little bit, what a cruel twist of irony.

If you haven’t heard about it, I encourage you to hop on over to twitter.com. I say this not because I think Twitter is fantastic or anything, but because it’s getting a lot of buzz lately. Twitter is an online networking website of sorts. It’s kind of something you need to see to understand, but basically, you can follow people on twitter. Everyone has a word limit of 140 words per post, and when you post something, it is sent out to everyone that is following you. The idea is that you follow people that you think have interesting things to say (or know personally) and people will follow you if they think you have interesting things to say. The problem with this is, I don’t have anything interesting to say frequently enough to post on twitter, but I’m still trying to figure out what all this hubbub is about. So if you haven’t, try making a Twitter account. Search for “Tone Hoeft” and you should be able to find me. Who knows, perhaps we can make our own twitter network? To be honest, I just want to see if this thing is as good as everyone says it is.

In other notes. I was thinking to myself the other day and there was one question I kept coming back to. Why do I do stupid things that I always regret? I learned in adolescent psychology that middle school kids, boys especially, go through a year of their life called “pseudo-stupidity,” where they make ridiculous choices because their brain is going through heavy development. The thing is, I feel like I am constantly in that stage. It’s the only thing that could explain why I make a conscious effort to do things that I regret 5 minutes later. If I have so much remorse over the whole ordeal, don’t you think I would have the foresight to understand not to do it then? Good grief.

So perhaps someday I’ll get out of this train of thought and be able to bring a little foresight into my life. I hear those things come with age. Here’s hoping.
