When going on a vacation to the exotic Caribbean, this is the kind of choice one may have to make. In some cases it is a literal choice between the two options and in others it is more symbolic. The thing is that the Caribbean has become very much of a tourist centric region, where the traditional allures of the islands are being lost to modern “amenities”. The only exception to this is the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and in particular the island of Tobago. These islands have rich natural resources and while tourism is an important provider of jobs, the economy is not solely dependant on tourism. This means the people of Trinidad and Tobago are able to retain the natural charm of their islands while at the same time ensuring that the Tobago tourism industry is professionally run and caters to the demands of the modern holiday maker.

Stay in paradise

One Tobago hotel that offers the best of both worlds is Half Moon Blue. Set in a garden of bamboo and bougainvillea and located at the base of a hill topped by Historic for George, it exudes the allure the charm of the Caribbean. The large fully equipped rooms with four verandahs and rattan furniture could only be in the Caribbean. A beautiful open air restaurant serves both the best of island fare and international cuisine. Being on the shores of beautiful Bacolet Bay means that there are pristine beaches just a few minutes walk from the rooms. And oh yes, there is an overflow swimming pool too!

Pirate’s Bay beach is a typical haunt for tourists. It’s a paradise out of sight of the world by a grassy ridge and the perfect spot for snorkeling. The beach is located in the far northwest near a fishing village named Charlottesville. Hidden away from civilization, it’s an idyllic spot to rejuvenate, far from the madding crowd. A campfire on Pirate’s Bay beach barbecuing freshly caught fish? That’s Nirvana! And Pirate’s Bay is just one of the many beaches in Tobago, each with its own unique flavor and character.

Old world luxury

The New York Times Travel Magazine features Tobago in its November 22 issue. Tourism, it reports, accounts for 50 percent of the gross domestic product and employs half the island. The article is well worth a read to give you an insight into this erstwhile British colony. The Bacolet Beach Club played host to the team of the New York Times during its photo shoot. The club is one of the island’s newest beach hotels, owned by former fashion model, Gloria Knapp-Jones. The Bacolet has 22 well-appointed rooms each fitted with a 32” flat-screen TV and other conveniences for their occupant’s comfort. Knapp-Jones insisted on four-poster beds so the tourist gets a touch of old world luxury. The Café Havana, attached to the Bacolet serves an incredible array of Latin-Asian fusion cuisine.

For a specially discounted tariff that the hotel offers till the year end, please email info@bacoletbeachclub.com. The hotel’s website at www.bacoletbeachclub.com features some of its spectacular attractions.

Good afternoon, muffins! As finals approach, so does something else that we have all been waiting for for quite some time: Winter Break. Along with being a time to reflect on the past semester and prepare for the impending summer whether it be an internship in L.A. or a one-week road trip along the coast, Winter Break should be used to relax and perhaps even take a tropical vacay in the process.

This afternoon, I found an article in the New York Times Style Magazine, T Magazine in their Travel Winter 2009 issue entitled, “Bask Country” by Jeffries Blackerby. Not only is the editorial about the Caribbean island of Tobago, but it is also brimming with a variety of absolutely gorgeous photographs filled with scenic marine views, stunning clothes, as well as the fashion industry’s Dominican darling, Arlenis Sosa. The following photoshoot was done by the very talented photographer, Camille Akrans. Below is a visual sneak peak of what’s in store. To read/view the article, simply click and enjoy: Jeffries Blackerby’s article, ”Bask Country.”

On Friday 27th November, nine year 6 pupils from North Harringay Primary School in London ’met’ their Global School partners from Buccoo Primary School in Tobago via a video link-up. The event was part of a state visit to Trinidad and Tobago by HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and HM The Queen.

These are some of their personal blog posts -

North Harringay Primary School

Okeroghene and Jordan of North Harringay Primary School

Okeroghene -
It was fun video conferencing. They’re on the other side of the world and we’re in England….We’ve learnt that the people there and the people here aren’t really different. We just speak in a different way.

Jordan -
It was just amazing video conferencing. They are in Tobago in a hotel. We’re lucky to talk to them. I feel so happy. I didn’t say much really, I just said my name and hello. It would be fantastic to go on a school trip there and they could give us a guided tour. I’ve learnt that it is very hot.

Doris -
It was very interesting to video conference with the children because we got to know what they are doing in Tobago. We do our thing, they do their thing, so it’s special knowing what they do. It’s more special than comparing ourselves with another local school because they are in a different part of the world. I’ve learnt that Tobago is a very beautiful country. I’ve learnt how much they take care of stuff.

Ava -
We sang to the children because we couldn’t get the video link to begin with. At first I didn’t want to do it because I felt embarrassed but we all did it and it was great. Amazing, I never knew we would do something like video conferencing . Tobago, when it rains it rains hot water! Mr Duke, the head teacher from Buccoo Primary School, had never heard of a jumper before.

Mayes -
It’s amazing how we can speak to people in another country. It’s fun to find out about people we don’t know. I told Kent from the British Council I liked his tie. It’s extremely nice to have a partnership with another school so far away because you can find out a lot of information about hotter countries. You can also find out about the people in the countries who are different from us. Tobago is a much hotter country than ours. It’s a few hours behind us. They try to keep their beaches clean. It was very tense as we waited to see Prince Philip.

Nalini Stewart, 11, wearing a carnival costume to represent the traditional industries that have been created in Buccoo tells the Prince about her school’s hopes for the future of their local area

Nalini -
It was frightening meeting the Duke but he is a good man. He made me feel very calm. I want to be like him when I grow up. When we spoke to the students in London I learned that they wear different uniforms and that they are different from us. I learned that you can become friends with anyone. Please tell them I say “Hello”.

Pupils at Buccoo School, Tobago, head out to research the reef for their Global Schools project

Sol Joanni -
I spoke to him [The Duke of Edinburgh], about Buccoo’s beauty and about preserving its environment. It was fun talking to the children and meeting people of a different culture. If we talked again, I would tell them about the beauty of Tobago.

Sean-Daniel Budding -
I was nervous and excited at the same time. The Duke [of Edinburgh] was very patient; he is a nice person. He asked about our school and who made the model. When we talked to North Harringay, we introduced ourselves to each other. If we talk again, I want to know more about their school.

Soca collaborations, riding rhythms- are these new techniques being attempted among Caribbean artistes, in a bid to catch the attention of the mainstream music industry? Machel Montano, the youngster who at age 9, was chastised by the elders of that time for his involvement in the artform, is today revered as the trendsetter. He single handedly made strides in recent years to collaborate with Jamaicans ( who, mind you- have been heard mainstream and are well received, despite their accent or “demeanor”) and even Americans, as in the case of Doug E Fresh and Latinos- I recall a track with Pitbull (a favourite for many)!

Following Montano’s effort to introduce the concept of collaboration, there was a sudden venture into riding ‘riddums.’ Now, mind you, it’d been done with Soca Parang music, but hard core Soca- no. Basically, a producer would create his masterful rhythm and invite artistes, so fit, to compose tracks and vocalize. In the end, you’d come out with maybe 5 or 6 artistes singing a variation of lyrics to one melody. It’d work for the season, as the artistes on the tracks, stood to benefit during the season when promoters would be looking for the artistes who’s been given the most airplay- which in most instances would be those riding ‘riddums.’

It’s a great strategy, especially when used together. Think of it as a marketing ploy- piggybacking off the success of an already established brand- for example: Jamaica’s dancehall crooner, Beenie Man’s collaboration with superstar, Janet Jackson or in simpler forms- LG Electronics partnership with the highly acclaimed Prada brand- cross branding at its best!

I’m no expert on the music business however, I do understand a strategy when I see one. This in itself has proven ideal for Caribbean Soca artistes- all it needs however is packaging, from PR to elements of physical structuring- a TEAM is required for tantamount success. Only then, will mainstream music execs see and feel the music….

Many Americans are finding that the economic downturn has ruined their vacation plans.

Sure, with things still in a bad shape, going off on a vacation may not feel like a wise thing to do. But there are signs of recovery in the air and after a long tough year, perhaps you deserve a break – a chance to recharge your batteries and get ready for the year ahead and the challenges that the expected economic recovery will bring.

Taking a vacation does not mean breaking the bank. Nor does it mean loading the family in the car and driving to the next town for a couple of days. The Caribbean islands are an exotic destination that is surprisingly inexpensive. It is something you should seriously consider. Trinidad and Tobago is a great place to spend a few days, or more. While it is an experience completely different from anything you will find in the US, Trinidad & Tobago is not very far away. Airfares are reasonable and Tobago airlines and others offer convenient flights from the US. For those coming in from Europe, Virgin Atlantic offers economy fares from London to Scarborough at GBP 168.90 all-inclusive from 19th to 26th November.

Trinidad and Tobago all inclusive resorts can help you plan your budget and keep your expenses under control. Tobago has all kind of vacation options, from getting a tan on the beautiful Tobago beaches to a range of water sports, golf, tennis and much more. There is something to suit every taste. And the best way to make the most of your Tobago vacation is to stay at Half Moon Blue, a small luxury resort hotel –with surprisingly reasonable tariffs – that provides all the comforts and facilities you may want while providing a truly different exotic atmosphere that will surely enhance your vacation experience.

This is the first of my on-going updates of games which I have already reviewed, have now played aga

This is the first of my on-going updates of games which I have already reviewed, have now played again and had some more thoughts about them.

Tobago is a fun, relatively simple game with some fresh gameplay mechanics, a beautiful board and lovely pieces (initial review here). I’ve even seen talk of it being a nominee for the Spiel des Jahres – I can imagine that coming true but it’s a long way off yet.

On first play, the game may seem fun but shallow; however, this play of Tobago revealed that there are some light tactics to be found within the game, especially in the final turns. Adding clues to multiple treasure searches is a great way to gain treasure cards without neccesarily needing to move to pick the treasure up – so it pays to co-operate with others. However, one player will always find it tempting to dominate one treasure by playing lots of their own cards on it. This is fine early on but doing this late in the game means you’d better be able to pick it up yourself because no-one else is likely to do it for you.

Amulets are starting to reveal themselves as being much more useful than they first appear and we’re still developing ways of using them in powerful combinations. Sometimes you can have a hand of cards that don’t help any treasure hunt much. It is tempting to hang on to them and use one where your forced to, but using an amulet to switch your hand of cards can allow you to get back in the game and have more influence and choice. I had three or four wek turns by not doing this.

It can be said that you can’t do too much planning ahead of your turn because the potential treasure locations (and corresponding cards) can change a lot during a turn, but this is only a light game and some planning is possible, especially using amulets – you might just have to adapt your plan at short notice. The game flows quickly too so there’s little down time between your turns.

All of these factors reveal there is some further thinking to be discovered in the game the more you play which means greater longevity, and a wider audience appeal because it will appeal to more experienced gamers who want a bit of depth as well as the new/light gamers. The board has multiple set-up combinations too for longer and shorter games and lots of varied map layouts.

Overall, I really like to play Tobago and find it interesting. I’m not sure it’s a game you can become really good at due to its light nature but there are some tactics starting to emerge which may separate the players out.

This time I played the game with 3 new players of my regular games group and all the players enjoyed the game and would play it again. At the games event I went to on Saturday, it was very well received by nearly all of the 15+ players (mostly experienced gamers) that played it too another encouraging response for a game that deserves to be noticed.

The Leader of the Opposition, Basdeo Panday, recently laid a motion in Parliament seeking for HCU de

The Leader of the Opposition, Basdeo Panday, recently laid a motion in Parliament seeking for HCU depositors to be granted a ‘bailout’ of the kind given to those who had invested with the failed CL Financial group. On Friday 30th October, the Minister of Finance made a major statement to Parliament, seeking to defend the government’s actions in the cases of these two failed Financial Institutions.

In terms of race, politics and finance, that statement by the Minister deserves our most sober consideration.

Before going further I need to make two things clear – firstly, I am not intervening on behalf of Mr. Harry Harnarine or the HCU. I am not a supporter of that cause. Not at all. Secondly, I do not support the bailout of either group – CL Financial or HCU. The idea that State resources should be deployed to assist investors who have lost money is a dangerous one. As a matter of principle, the concept of moral hazard has real weight in economic behaviour. The idea that investors should be rescued without paying the consequences of their choices is inimical to proper development. That general principle has been done violence by the CL Financial bailout.

As I have stated in my previous articles on this bailout, the record of the government in terms of separating the interests of depositors, policy-holders and shareholders is turbid.

The Minister’s rationale was set out in two limbs – the first being that the HCU dealings were not straightforward – indeed, one newspaper carried the headline ‘Devious HCU’– and secondly, that the CL Financial dealings were marked by “…tangible co-operation…”. This bailout is an extremely serious act being carried out by the government in breach of fundamental principle and we deserve nothing but the truth.

There are deep contradictions on every single point cited by the Minister to support the actions taken.

Here is what the Minister is reported to have said, together with the contradictions -

Ample collateral – The Minister is reported to have said that HCU failed to offer ample collateral to the State. The Central Bank Governor is reported to have said, on 7th April, that all of CL Financial’s assets were otherwise committed – This was reported at http://guardian.co.tt/business/business/2009/04/08/govt-left-empty-handed-cl-financial-bailout.

The Ernst & Young report – The Minister is also quoted as saying that “The auditors’ assessment was that the Hindu Credit Union was facing not a liquidity problem, but a solvency problem and all its assets were overestimated in value and encumbered.” As a rationale for the government’s actions, that is completely at odds with the 7th April statement of the Central Bank Governor. In fact we were told that the CL Financial group and various of its parts were being examined by Ernst & Young, KPMG and Bob Lindquist, the renowned forensic accountants. To date, no results of those accountants’ work have been released. We are being told that the CL Financial chiefs showed “…tangible co-operation…” in their dealings, so where are the audits? Why has the 2008 audit of the CL Financial group by PriceWaterhouseCoopers not been published?

“…What is the Government to do? You dealing with…the major players, and they are not levelling with you…” That was the Minister’s statement about HCU, made in apparent exasperation. As I wrote in my column ‘Who is Who and What is What’ published here on 30th April – “At the beginning of this process we were led to believe that CL Financial was being pro-active and cooperative in their dealings with the State. Indeed the Governor even made this point directly in his prepared remarks at the 30th January press conference “…I would like to acknowledge the high level of cooperation that we have received from Mr. Duprey…” Since then CLF has now been exposed as paying dividends after requesting the State bailout, challenging the injunction obtained by the State over their assets with a powerful legal team and, to top it all, pledging the same assets twice. The Governor spoke on 23rd April – ‘If you ask me whether CL Financial did everything that was honourable and beyond reproach, the answer is no! The answer is no!’”

Obviously, some one of the major players is not levelling with us.

SIDEBAR
So the government bails out policyholders and depositors of the CL Financial group. That is widely welcomed, except for a few objectors, like myself. It seems to me that the interests of the CL Financial shareholders have been promoted in preference to those of the taxpayer. I am subject to correction, but if that is so, it would be a monumental mis-allocation of public funds and a seriously questionable act. The terms of the bailout are now being deliberately concealed from public view, although it is at our expense and supposedly being carried out for the benefit of the public.

That secrecy is toxic to notions of transparency, accountability and modernity. I will return to that secrecy issue.

Suffice to say that the terms of the bailout, the subsequent revelations and the concealment of the second MoU have combined with the Minister’s contradictory statement to yield a very unhealthy series of precedents.

The unspoken question at this moment is ‘Who is next?’. Last week’s BG View editorial highlighted some pertinent concerns as to the health of private pension plans and the strength of the regulatory process.

No one knows if CL Financial is just the first in a chain-reaction or simply a ‘one-off’. The burning question is, if there is another collapse of a large investment house – ‘Will they also be bailed-out?’ and, if yes, ‘On what terms?’

Laura
