Katsui graduated from Central Saint Martins College after studying at Parsons The New School for Design. Yagi graduated from Doshisha University and Central Saint Martins College.
The brand, mintdesigns was launched in 2001. They have been in Tokyo Collection since ‘03 S/S. The awards they won include the Moet et Chandon New Designer’s Award in 2005. In 2007, mintdesigns garage store opened in Shibuya PARCO. They presented their collection in the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT THIS PLAY! show. In 2008, they presented the opening show at São Paulo Fashion Week for ‘09 S/S. Both designers currently hold positions as guest professors at the Faculty of Art and Design at Osaka Seikei University. In 2009 they presented their collection at the Milano Salone TOKYO FIBER ‘09.Mint Designs turned out a dainty crop of dresses featuring details such as shimmery stripes, textured fabric and quirky graphics. One frock featured a darling print of tiny Charlie Chaplins, while another showcased circular cutouts along the sides.

We begin today with a question: does it seem a tad early for the Black Friday frenzy to be underway?

We have seen several stories on the topic in the last two days, including several focusing on the Target and Wal-Mart strategies for boosting sales. From a CNN/Money story:

“Target is hoping to lure this year’s Black Friday shoppers with $3 toasters and coffeemakers, deep deals on high-definition televisions, and discounts of 50% on clothes and toys…”

Le Boutique even has a Black Friday ad sign-up page on its website; we’re not clear what one receives when signing up on that page, and much as we adore our readers we just couldn’t bring ourselves to sign up in order to learn more.

Last year we shared as much information as seemed reasonable about fiscally-friendly opportunities at retail establishments with a preppish slant, Brooks Brothers, Talbots, Neiman Marcus, J.Crew, and the like. We planned to do the same this year. We just feel there is an ever-earlier encroachment, but perhaps it is selective recall on our part.

One final joint effort to share today: the Badgley Mischka line for HSN, American Glamour.

The collection is scheduled to launch November 17th with a special program on the shopping channel, but from the looks of things, many pieces (if not the entire line) are already available online.

The Animal Print Bag is showcased in either a Cheetah or Zebra pattern, selling at $349.90.

Price points run from $39 to $499; the collection includes clothing, jewelry and accessories. (But no housewares as in Isaac Mizrahi’s line for QVC discussed in Tuesday’s post.) The Big Bold Ring is $59 and the coordinating 5 Stone Necklace is $79, $69 for the event price. (?)

The Hinged Cuff Bracelet runs $99.

We find this all more-than-interesting to watch from the sidelines, the marketing and merchandising techniques are fascinating.

According to this story in today’s Times, Blake Lively hair is all the rage.

“At the Bumble and bumble in Bloomingdale’s, Michael Wilson, a stylist, said that more than half his customers ask for the “Textured and Tousled, or Curled and Swirled” styling … It is a request he attributes to Ms. Lively’s hairstyle.”

And the popular Gossip Girl star’s reaction?

““I didn’t really realize the extent of it,” Ms. Lively said of her hair’s popularity, though she had an inkling: fashion forerunners like Vogue staffers routinely approach her at events and fixate on her hair, she said.”

Finally, news that may put smiles on the faces of some fashionistas, while creating scowls for others: one may now purchase both Chanel and Louis Vuitton handbags at CostCo.

Venerable luxury shoemaker TOD’s has collaborated with fashion journalist Donatella Sartorio on a new coffee-table book that celebrates all things Italian, and advances the idea that the Italians have really good taste (let’s face it, they do). Italian Touch—which Vanity Fair praised as “a rich sampling of Italian life”—features photos of people of all ages who live la dolce vita, whether in Tuscany, Sicily, San Gimignano, or some other delicious Italian locale.

On Tuesday, TOD’s in Beverly Hills had a party for the limited-edition tome hosted by onetime Will & Grace star Debra Messing, and Roxanne shot bellisima portraits of the attendees. “Famed fashion photographer Roxanne Lowit took stylized black-and-white family portraits, which were quickly printed, cropped and handed out to guests,” reported The Los Angeles Times. The one at right was featured at Style.com.

Conclusion: We expect the stock to consolidate as it trades at 19.5xP/E at a time when sales growth continues to decline.

9 months results: Sales up 1.8% reported to €559m (+0.4% like for like), EBIT down 1.8% to €106m.

Quaterly trends do not bode well for Q4: Tod’s started the year with a surprisingly strong first quarter (up 5%), followed by a deceleration to -2% in Q2 and -3% on Q3.
Italy which used to resist very well is now slowing down while the rest of Europe and North America continue to decline. Asia is up double digit but this not enough to drive sales growth.
Growth is driven by Hogan while Tod’s, Fay and Roger Vivier brands sales continue to decline.

EBIT was broadly flat in the first nine months, which implies that management is keeping cost under control. Tod’s performance looks good considering the negative mix impact, notably weak leather goods sales.
In the absence of guidance, we forecast a 30bp decrease in margin this year and a 2% fall in EPS.

Tod’s can rely on a solid balance sheet with a net cash position of €106m compared to €73m (end of December), helped by lower capex and tighter working capital.

The stock looks fully priced based on our valuation range estimated between €50-52 per share.

I have been working hard (Like really slogging it out) trying to save, but spending it all away (what to do there is so much stuff to splurge on!). Ever since I saw the Gwyneth Paltrow ad featuring the Tod’s shoes and bracelet or band whatever you wanna call it – Iam all eyes for the classic look. I just cant get over it. Cant stop thinking about it!

And when they had their sale a few months back, I picked up my Piggy Bank, overwithdrew from savings and was all set to pick up a pair of their shoes but guess what Murphy’s law was at play. NO SIZE.

Driving moccasins have long been my go-to shoe.  They go with everything.  Literally, I wear them with shorts, khakis, jeans, suits, etc.  I think I got my first pair during my sophomore year of high school.  They were a basic brown leather version from L.L. Bean.  Since then I have upgraded each time I have bought a new pair.  My next two pairs were from Cole Haan.  They were a brown moc-alligator and a really cool saddle brown penny-loafer style.  Recently, I was walking through Banana Republic during one of their sales, and noticed two pairs.  The first was your basic brown and the other was a really nice gray suede.  They were each $50 on sale.  Needless to say I walked away with two new pairs of shoes.

While in Milan this summer, I noticed the wide variety of colors and designs on every mans feet.  I was shocked at the massive number of Milanese men who were sporting driving mocs.  They had on dark green, blue, purple, zebra, camo, etc.  All of which I loved, but I think it takes baby steps to work the wilder of the afore-mentioned into the wardrobe.

I missed the opportunity to snag a less expensive pair in Milan, so now I’m cornered into going with the more expensive Tod’s version.  They are beautiful shoes, and would go great with everything from jeans to a suit.  I can already see the outfit: purple Tod’s, A.P.C. jeans, blue Oxford shirt, and a sharp navy blazer.  It will only be a matter of time.

If anyone knows of somewhere stateside that does a good version of the driving moccasin, in multiple colors, I would love the input.  I have seen a few good pairs at Barney’s CO-OP.

I became a writer as a result of life.

The truth is, I was looking for more.  In life, from life, and specifically from myself.  I love a challenge.  I am ridiculously competitive, sometimes to a point if someone were to say “the sky is beautifully blue,” I might respond with “Is it blue? I think it’s purple?”  Is it to argue?  No.  It is sometimes just to push someone to look a tiny bit closer.  When we are kids and learning colors we are taught the sky is blue, the grass is green.  But doesn’t life require us to look a bit closer at things and often learn that the grass although green, is not always greener on the other side?  It is not always “it is what it is.” But, if we look a tiny bit closer, maybe we will see much more than just what first comes to mind.   Maybe listening to our hearts every once in a while, completes the idea, the thought, the lesson. Perhaps, we become fulfilled.

So, I stumbled into writing. For the past five years, I started keeping journals.  A specific leather-bound journal that I stock up on as I fear one day I will not be able to find them.  I am a creature of habit at times.  These journals were not written in a “Dear Diary” manner, but to remind myself not to forget any questions, thoughts or curiosities about everything and sometimes absolutely nothing.  Sometimes if we get too comfortable with a routine or schedule, life passes us by.

I woke up one day with the most random idea.  Yes, I do often have them similar to this past week as I cannot get Ireland out of my mind.  Most likely, I will be going in 2010.  I tend to follow these random thoughts and see them through from beginning to end.

While sitting at work during a previous job, I opened Google and entered “Writing classes in New York.”  After several steps later, I was signed up and showing up in two weeks at an Introduction to Chick Lit.  No big deal.

As I walked into the class in Soho that night, I was greeted by a well know writer who was running the course.  I panicked.  I became flushed and literally under my breath mumbled, “What the hell are you doing Kamm?”  I mean literally as the girl next to me glanced over and flashed a “Why is she talking to herself?” look.

I was out of my comfort zone.  I was in an unknown.  Here I was, a science person with a Clinical Nutrition and biochemistry background that works in the beauty industry, now sitting in a room of twelve women that had completed their novels or had been trying to complete chapters in a working manuscript. Some had started six months to even seven years ago.  I had never felt so out of place in my life.

The class began promptly on time and we were immediately asked to start an exercise.  Taking out my notebook, we had two minutes to compare a boyfriend (past or present) to his favorite pair of shoes.

I wasted the first 15 seconds in “What the hell” mode and then put my pen to paper and in less than two minutes, I had one page.  I sat there and adjusted slightly back looking at my words which filled the page placed in front of me.  I didn’t know what to think as I had simply stopped thinking and just started writing.  I didn’t analyze while the words were being written across the page.  I didn’t second-guess myself.  I just went for it.

As I sat there, I felt everything.  Not an overwhelming feeling, but more like an at peace feeling.  That feeling that when you visit home after being gone for a while (And yes, before your loved ones start getting on your nerves and you are missing your own space).

What terrified me minutes prior, now felt safe. I even felt my posture improve and the solid support of my core reposition me in my chair.

Right at that moment, I fell in love with writing.  I fell in love with words.  I never had this feeling through my 7 years of studying or the 4 years of my skin care company.  A writing class had given me something that I never had.  I got something in return so effortlessly.

I went home that night, sat in my living room floor with the class outline in front of me.  I read over the outline of a novel’s structure, Act I, II, and III while sipping a glass of Pinot Noir.  I took out three orange post it notes and wrote each Act on one, placing them on my wall.  My mission was to build a tree of post it’s.  I was going to create my first novel.

Two weeks later I had 163 post it notes on my living room wall.   Seven months after that, I had a 287-page manuscript.  Over the next 6 months, I revised and edited with the help of two published authors and today I have a 261-page novel.  After two title changes, I have Under Her Skin.  And that is still the working title.

That class changed the direction of my life. That exercise politely slapped me in the face with passion.  In Under Her Skin, I included the idea of my one page story of an ex boyfriend compared to his favorite pair of shoes.  How could I not?  However, it has been revised, as it needed to be written through Isabella Reynold’s eyes, not Cari Kamm’s.  As a reminder, this is fiction as I keep reassuring my friends and loved ones not to worry.

From Chapter 1 -

“One day during one of our strolls, we decided to sit and relax on a bench along the Hudson River.  We sat there in silence and I could not help but look at his shoes.  He loved his Tod’s brown leather ankle boots.  As I sat there, I began to think how those boots resembled him in so many ways.  They were short, tan with a thick hard sole for stability.  At first glance, the boots seemed warm, safe and comfy.  Over the years, whatever mistakes he had made he had try to cover, but the imperfections were still visible on the toes surface. Well, if you looked carefully.  With such a history, the Tod’s boots would seem to be broken in.  In actuality, they were as cold as a mother-in-law’s kiss.  The boots could be paired with any outfit and most occasions, but still something never seemed to quite fit.”

During the latest Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York, all the Gossip Girl cast was busy in attending events and fashion shows, and our favourite lady, Kelly Rutherford, was no exception. While the younger actors enjoyed going at parties and club-hopping, she did her own duty as a mother, too.

Let’s take a look at the outfits she was spotted in.

On 12th September she left her home in Manhattan with her children Hermès and Helena (in a Bugaboo stroller) in tow. I absolutely love her outfit here, simple and country chic. She wore skinny jeans with brown riding boots, a plain dark grey tee and a comfy Prince of Wales jacket.  Her accessory is her trusty Hermès Evelyne bag in Etaupe, which perfectly matches with the neutral shades of the clothes.

She was leaving home to bring her children to a playdate, how cute! She was among the guests at Hautelook Fashion Playdate, an event hosted by Katie Brown and Lucy Sykes. Kelly’s mother, Ann Edwards, was there too. I just love these pics, where Kelly is playing with her two adorable children. It looks like she changed her trousers: in the pics she’s not wearing jeans, but black pants.

Later that day, she attended the Alice+Olivia fashion show, wearing a fashionable outfit.

She wore jeans with a black scoopneck t-shirt. She chose simple accessories as well: a pair of Christian Louboutin Simple patent pumps, her Hermès Trim bag and a nice multi-strand chain necklace. As usual, she kept her hair in a bun and her make-up to the minimum.

On 13th September Kelly glammed up for attending Tuleh fashion show.

She wore a gorgeous strapless printed dress, which showed her enviable decolletage off, and Christian Louboutin Simple pumps. She proudly carried one of the best pieces of her Hermès collection, the Kelly bag in Parchemin.

After a few days, on 17th September, she attended Ann Taylor See Now, Wear Now fashion show at the Public Library in New York.

Doesn’t she look like a modern embodiment of Hitchcock’s flawless blonde heroines? She was wearing a little black dress, nothing showy or revealing, yet she looked sexy and beautiful.

She paid homage to the designer wearing one of her pieces, a dress with a draped neckline. She accessorized it with the usual Louboutin pumps, a charm bracelet and her Hermès Kelly bag in black.

Wow, I love this pic! Kelly sat next to Vanessa Williams during the show. It’s so nice to see two of my favourite tv actresses sitting one next to the other (and having fun) at a social event.

The Fashion Week in New York ended on 17th September, but I’ve just found these recent pics of Kelly and I thought to share them with you. On 21st September she was among the celebrities who attended Obakki women’s new collection launch in New York.

She wore a lovely outfit, where all the items are grey pink, a lovely neutral shade which perfectly suits Kelly’s pale complexion. She paired a simple satin tank top with a skirt, and added metallic gold flats, diamond earrings and a statement necklace as accessories.

Though being a huge fan of statement necklaces, I don’t like this very much. It matches well the rest of the outfit, but the shape of the decorations (half-crescent) doesn’t convince me at all. On the other hand, I love her flawless make-up. I’m glad she hasn’t used botox so far: it is very rare to find an actress who accepts aging as a natural moment in everybody’s life.

On 22nd September she attended a cocktail party hosted by Tod’s and Vanity Fair for the release of the book Italian Touch. The event took place at Tod’s Boutique in New York.

She was really stunning, wearing a gorgeous beige cowl-neck sleeveless dress, her trusty Louboutin pumps and Kelly bag in Parchemin. As a mother, I can totally understand her pose: she often puts her hand on her belly and this is reminiscent of her recent pregnancy.

The close-up is so lovely! I like her make-up, especially the peach blush she’s wearing, and her jewellery (diamond earrings and a gold ring).

Now the third season of Gossip Girl has started, I’m looking forward to see Lily back on track. What do you think of the first two episodes? Do you like S and B’s outfits? I’m quite disappointed by what I’ve seen so far, but I understand the change in the protagonists’ closets is connected to the plot.

WWD is reporting that Diego Della Valle, the Italian entrepreneur and chairman and chief executive officer of Tod’s SpA, has invested in eyewear maker Safilo Group SpA.

Reuters is reporting that while the Swiss watchmaker’s sales figures are still down, they are rebounding slowly:

The value of sales slipped to 843 million Swiss francs ($814 million) in August, falling below 2006 levels. Swiss watch exports have fallen 26 percent to 8.1 billion francs so far this year, the industry body said on Tuesday.

This ad is for a pair of Tods patent brown leather loafers in size 37.

As you’d expect from Tods, these shoes are superb quality and will look fantastic with both work wear or with a pair of casual trousers.

The shoes are second hand and in good condition, albeit the leather is ever so slightly cracked on the sides from wear (see photos), but nothing major- but that’s why I’m letting them go for just £20 (plus postage). They are a great pair of shoes that will last for years!
