While many toile de jouy patterns have a white background, this beautiful canvas handbag has a light yellow background with a blue and white pattern, conjuring up thoughts of sun and springtime.

The pattern is a decorative Asian print of a man holding a parasol and a boy holding an exotic bird and staff. As with most toile de jouy patterns, this one has many floral designs both large and small.

The straps are dark blue with white stitching. They are also made of a canvas outer material with a firm but soft inner material.

The inside of this handbag is a medium blue pattern with repeating vertical white stripes. There is one pocket on the inside that measures 7 by 5.5 inches.

The inside base has a solid, removable rectangular piece wrapped in same outer material, which will help this handbag sit flat.

A nice detail is two dark blue strings on either side, meant to tie your bag closed in case you need to do so.

Measurements:

Base width: 15 inches

Top width: 14.5 inches

Bag Height: 11 inches

Handle height: 7.5 inches

Total height: 18.5 inches

Enclosure Type: Tiestring

This bag is great for light shopping days!

You may think it’s been a little quiet on the teddy front this week, but no, I’ve still been sewing away! I made these two lovely bears from Toile de Jouy fabric…

The top one was made at the request of MummyMad from The Mad House. She had persuaded her lovely husband to buy her one for Christmas and she really wanted this particular fabric so her Bubs Bear could sit in their green bedroom. Apparently she has already sneaked a look inside the parcel, so she doesn’t mind me putting a photo on here!

I had enough fabric leftover to make another one, and as my friend Kathryn had seen MummyMad’s bear and loved it, I made the second one for her birthday present. Here is “Ernest” looking happy in his new home…

And lastly, I’ve made a patchwork baby clothes bear as a special order. To be honest, she was quite a challenge as some of the fabrics were super stretchy, and some were not stretchy at all. This makes stuffing the bear quite tricky as it can end up bulging out where the fabric stretches. So I haven’t stuffed her as much as the bears above, and as a result she is quite soft and squishy! I was worried all the way through that she wasn’t going to turn out right, but I’m really pleased with her. She’s very different from the other baby clothes bears I’ve made due to the bright and dark colours, but she is just as beautiful.

So can I rest now? No. I have a wedding dress here from a lovely lady named Helen, who is waiting for me to transform it into her very own Bubs Bear! Photos of this one soon, I promise!

PS…for all those who wanted to know, I have just phoned to see how Annie is doing and she is absolutely fine. She is still inside the barn, but is eating well and settling in. She is being very vocal every time she hears somebody come into the barn, so they are all falling for it and giving her lots of attention and cuddles! I will give it a week or so for her to settle in, and then go and visit.

“Tradionally a single colour pictorial print depicting figurative and pastoral scenes. Its name was derived from a small French village, Jouy-en-Josas, where two German brothers set up a factory in 1770 to print imported Indian calico using copper plates. The charm is in the fine detail achieved, best seen when the fabric lies flat, as on bedcovers, cushions and flat palmets. When gathered, the pictures are lost in folds, although the effect is still attractive.” ~ American Glossary – www.magnolialane.com

Thomas Bond, physician, 1712-1784

I’M IN PHILADELPHIA at the moment, in the breakfast room, below, of the Thomas Bond House, a delightful small hotel in Old City. The building dates from 1769, and I’m in my element, taking in the worn pine floors, 12-over-12 windows, toile de jouy wallpaper, Windsor chairs, etc. I’m a sucker even for the hokey details like electrified candlesticks in all the windows.

The Bond House is across the street from another of my favorite Philly places, which would be exceedingly corny if it wasn’t done so very well: City Tavern, below, a painstaking re-creation of the pub/inn where George, Ben, and the rest spent many presumably happy hours.

That’s where I went yesterday for a late lunch (“midday fare”) after I concluded the business that brought me here on one of my too-rare trips to Philly: meeting with a contractor about interior repairs in my Queen Village building, following major roof failure during last month’s rainstorms, and welcoming a new tenant in Old Kensington.

I love to sit in a corner booth at the authentically underlit City Tavern, eating cornbread-encrusted oysters and sipping a citrus-y pale ale from Alexander Hamilton’s own recipe, served by waitstaff in bonnets or breeches who say “Good afternoon” rather than “Hey, what can I get ya?”

Today I’ll try for about the 5th time to get into the elusive Bishop White House, above, a fully furnished house of the 1780s run by the National Park Service. When I called yesterday for information, I was told its opening was ‘contingent upon staff.’

Happily, the Colonial garden at Walnut and 4th, below, is always open.

Trudi of The Deco Detective always has such stunning images on her blog and this post on flea market finds is no exception. I’ve been searching for some more examples of modern trompe l’oeil since I did this post and so I was delighted to find this beautiful dresser there today.

And, wait, is that trompe l’oeil on the clock too?! Either way, the whole scheme is really playful and pretty.

Pop over to The Deco Detective for some more inspirational rooms in pink and green (originally via Skona Hem).

Dica ultra romântica pra quem for a Gramado a dois!

Hidden within my little black scrapbook, there is a tiny chapter devoted to these XVIII century style photographs.

Attending the CGTA Show I get to see so many beautiful things! I usually attend the Spring and Fall Shows. There are great exhibitors to visit and spend the whole day walking around admiring products.

My mission is to find and see the most trendy gift wrapping materials and also embellishments for the whole year.

During my visit to the Spring Show back in January, I got to see these beautiful and elegant French boxes. These luxurious fabrics look like upholstery fabrics in great colour combinations like black and white {oh! so elegant!} blue and white {oh! so very French!}, tan, blue and white…and of course black and white…and my biggest enjoyment was to find Toile De Jouy prints!

Toile de Jouy originated in France in the late 1700s. In the French language, the phrase literally means “cloth from Jouy-en-Josas”, a town of north-central France. Although it has been continuously produced since then, it experienced a marked upsurge in popularity around the year 2000. Previously only a decorating design, designers have been recently experimenting with toile-patterned apparel as well. Sometimes is sometimes abbreviated to simply “toile”, is a type of decorating pattern consisting of a usually white or off-white background on which a repeated pattern depicting a fairly complex scene, generally of a pastoral theme such as (for example) a couple having a picnic by a lake. Toiles also often consists of an arrangement of flowers. The pattern portion consists of a single colour, most often black, dark red, or blue. Greens, browns and magenta toile patterns are less common but not unheard of. Toile is most associated with fabrics (curtains and upholstery in particular), though toile wallpaper is also popular.

These boxes come right from France and are great choice to arrange expensive gifts inside. I have to say that they make a beautiful present on their own. They come in a variety of sizes and with bows already attached. Stack them up like in these photos and make an even more magnificent impression! If you are a retailer you will have an spectacular display!

You can find them at Pierre Belvedere shops, check their website for all locations.

We all love opening gifts. Picture yourself opening these so very elegant boxes! Just imagine…

Golden Bee – Napoleon used the bee as a symbol of his empire after his coronation in 1804. It stood for industry, efficiency and productivity. Also emblematic of immortality and resurrection, the bee was chosen to link the new dynasty to the very origins of France. Golden bees (cicadas really) were discovered in 1653 in Tournai in the tomb of Childeric I (father of Clovis) who founded the Merovingian dynasty in 457. They were considered to be the oldest emblem of the sovereigns of France.

On Saturday, I walked into Bridport. There is a thriving busy street market on Wednesdays and Saturdays and as this Saturday was warm and sunny, the market was buzzing. After my visit to the tiny art shop to stock up on paper and glue, I was on my way home when I spotted a fabric stall which was selling really gorgeous fabrics at very discounted prices.

I noticed some of that plasticized cotton fabric which can be used for kitchen tablecloths (as it is very wipe-able!) I bought several prints as I thought it would be a nice to have some books with wipe-able covers, useful for using in the kitchen or if you are an artist and prone to getting paint or glue everywhere! This book uses one of these fabrics, it’s a cotton ‘toile de jouy’, a very traditional print. Toile de Jouy originated in France in the 1800s. In the French language, the phrase literally means “cloth from Jouy-en-Josas”, a town of north-central France. They are normally, rustic scenes in red, blue or black printed onto a cream background. They have become very popular for furnishing fabrics. I hope you like this book.

I was very touched by all the kind comments after my last post, all those compliments, I think you may have created a monster…..

Only joking There are times when I really do wish I was amazing. This morning was a case in point.

I played tennis this morning. Correction. I played tennis very badly this morning. I normally fall out of bed at the last minute and rush off to tennis without any breakfast or even a cup of tea, arrive just in time and manage to play reasonably well. This morning, I woke early, had a leisurely cup of tea and a bowl of muesli and arrived at my friends house early, so we had a chat about my books and calligraphy (she owns a copy of the ‘Kites‘ piece which you may remember) – and then we played tennis and I was RUBBISH. Very depressing…

I was cheered however, when I spotted this, my favourite tree, in all its glory. Gorgeous. I just adore these flowering cherries and must get one for my garden. This tree would have looked so much nicer against a clear blue sky but it was solid grey, in fact 5 minutes later, it was pouring with rain and hailstones.

I have always wanted to go to Japan to see a cherry blossom festival. Cherry trees are called ‘Sakura’ in Japanese and you can read about them here.

Here is the French group ‘Air’ and the track called ‘Cherry Blossom Girl’. Listen to this dreamy music and gaze at a still from one of my favourite movies, ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’. Luscious Ken Watanabe for you girls and for once, some eye candy for you boys too…. gorgeous Ziyi Zhang. And lots of cherry blossoms, how romantic….

Awhile back I did a post on “Twisted Toile”, modern takes on the traditional french toile as now found in wallpapers, linens and more. Then just the other day I came across a wonderful addition to the world of trendy toile; some fabulous ceramic wall tiles from Saint Honoré Wallcoverings. The french store also carries wallpaper and like hundreds of other online boutiques, trendy wall decals.

The Munchausen collection of ceramic wall tiles have the look and feel of traditional toile from afar and yet, close up, reveal that they sport such popular contemporary imagery as animals, skulls, birds and asian elements.

“MUNCHAUSEN presents a collection that plays on the notion of frieze, fresco, with the idea of redrawing a toile de Jouy transposed to the anachronistic details on the tiles. Also, their series “Palm Springs” perfect for holiday features superb playmates at the edge of pools sumptuous villas.”

Below are the four different takes on toile:

Awhile back I did a post on “Twisted Toile”, modern takes on the traditional french toil
