Stierenvechten op het grote doek

Corridas de toros. De halve wereld is er tegen, maar het blijft leuk en spannend genoeg om er naar te kijken, foto’s van te maken en ook in een film te gebruiken, blijkt. Regisseur James Mangold is in Cádiz neergestreken voor de opname’s van zijn Knight and day met Tom Cruise en Cameron Díaz. En die moeten de stierenrennen in Pamplona gaan naspelen, althans een moderne versie ervan. In de film van Mangold (geen slechte regisseur, trouwens, met titels als Girl interrupted, Cop Land, Walk the line en 3:10 to Yuma) zijn het motoren en auto’s die voor de stieren uit vluchten. De opnames liggen nu stil, gedwongen door de gemeente, sinds gisteren de zeven stieren zelf het hek openmaakten en op eigen houtje Cádiz onveilig gingen maken. Twee vrouwen raakten licht gewond, tot de stieren op het strand bij elkaar gehouden konden worden door twee heldhaftige agenten in een Renaultje.

Deed me weer even denken aan die andere stierenvechtfilm die al tweeëneenhalf jaar tevergeefs op zijn première wacht. Nederlander Menno Meyjes, vooral bekend als scriptwriter van The Color Purple en Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade draaide in 2006 in Spanje Manolete, over de mythische stierenvechter met dezelfde naam, in 1947 op 30-jarige leefijd dodelijk gegrepen door een stier in de arena van Linares. Mysterieuze problemen en onenigheid met de Spaanse producent zijn er de oorzaak van dat de film, met Penélope Cruz en de opvallend sterk op Manolete gelijkende Adrian Brody – die tijdens die opnames zijn nog altijd beroemde Spaanse liefje Elsa Pataky leerde kennen – nog nooit te zien is geweest. Althans, deze maand schijnt hij vertoond te zijn op een filmmarkt in Los Angeles, maar een datum voor de première (aanvankelijk was dat in het voorjaar van 2007) is er nog altijd niet…

Al parecer, los astados rompieron las vallas que los encerraban en algún lugar y empezaron a correr libremente por el casco histórico de la capital gaditana hiriendo a dos mujeres.

The New South Wales Government says the Church of Scientology is targeting Year 6 students using “marketing” material that claims to promote human rights.

Education Minister Verity Firth has ordered principals not to distribute DVDs and booklets funded by the church and sent to schools by a group called Youth For Human Rights.

The material outlines the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and quotes Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard on a list of “famous human rights leaders”.

Into the Danger Zone w/ Web Design

Our next assignment in web design was to create a design comp for a movie pre-1990, aka, before movies had their own web sites. I decided to create mine around the 1986 movie, Top Gun, staring Tom Cruise. A requirement for this design comp was to create a video player within one of the pages with the skin resembling or complimenting the rest of the site design.

Here are the home and internal pages of my design comp. I downloaded the font I used in order to give it a more digitized feel, combined with the bright green I was hoping to get the feel that you were looking through the high tech helmet of a fighter pilot…or at least the look of a simulator.

Married by the Book

As a licensed counselor, I have read more than my share of books on managing emotions and relationships. Unfortunately they are all the same. Sure they each have a slightly different take. Some even include their own unique Venn diagrams of emotional issues and how they relate to physical boundaries. Even the Christian books simply take what everyone else has already done and add a dash of Scripture, especially the latter part of Ephesians for flavor.

So when a friend told me that she had read a fantastic book on marriage, I have to admit I had a generous level of skepticism. I trust her judgment so thought to myself, “What’s the harm?” Perceiving my reservation, she sat me down and read a few pages from the first chapter. My curiosity sparked, I graciously borrowed her copy.

Marriage: Powered by Gospel

In his book When Sinners Say “I Do”: Discovering the Power of the Gospel for Marriage, Dave Harvey essentially redefines marriage for Christians. It has often been said that there is so much planning that goes into the wedding itself, that new couples often forget about everything after the honeymoon. Even the most diligent of Christian couples who want to follow every piece of advice do their premarital counseling, get to know each others’ parents, and may even ask their blessing.

Captivated by the vision they are starring at, it is easy for the bride and groom to completely miss when the minister says, “What God had joined together, let no man separate.”

Wait, what God had joined together? Did they not decide to get married?

The Bible is very clear, that the sanctity of marriage is the way that marriage draws us to Him. It is no accident that marriage is what Scripture uses as an image of Christ’s relationship with the Church. Ephesians 5 lays it out clearly that as Christ gave his life for the Church, husbands should love their wives with a self-sacrificing love. As the Church submits to the authority of Christ, so women are called to submit to the authority of their husbands. The Bible is obviously not politically correct in this position, but there is a beauty of the partnership.

A Powerful Reality

But let’s not stop there. In a bold and challenging sweep of language and biblical reference, Dave Harvey takes this image even further. He acknowledges something that we too often forget in marriage: both of us are sinners in need of grace. Sharing their first dance as a married couple, what wife wants to gaze into the eyes of this man of hers and think that he will never complete her like Renee Zellweger apparently does for Tom Cruise? Carrying her over the threshold, what man wants to really think that this woman is a wretched sinner?

Yet it is this very truth that, when neglected, can cause irreparable damage. The truth is that neither person can be everything to the other. Neither the bride nor the groom will ever be perfect. If it is God who has indeed joined these two people together, it is God and God alone who will be able to keep them together. It is the ugliness of their sin, that when acknowledged, can open the doors and windows to the awesome power of the Gospel that has already redeemed each individually, but which now has the power to sanctify the marriage itself.

Embracing one another as sinners means that we can lovingly lavish grace and mercy on one another. Taking hold of our own depravity means that we can see the our spouse as someone in need of the Gospel, someone to whom we have the honor and privilege of preaching the good news. We have the pleasure of pointing our loved one to the One who does complete us. It is here that the imputed love of God becomes the love we share for our spouse that “no man [can] separate.”

Stumbling around in high heels, Suri Cruise has been photographed again. The daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes first hit the headlines in September when she was spotted in a pair of sparkly silver peep toe heels, clutching a Starbucks take-away coffee cup whilst holding her mother’s hand. Does anyone else think this is completely inappropriate for a three-year old? We all know most little girls like to play dress up from time to time. How many mothers or older siblings haven’t had their wardrobes raided by a younger wannabe princess, heels snatched and lip-stick smeared? However, there is a big difference to letting your child prance around at home whilst playing make-believe and letting them out to clip-clop around in the full glare of the paparazzi.

Lestat & Edward as Byronic Heros

I was looking up Edward Cullen on Wikipedia and I saw that it said that Edward was a Byronic hero. Because of that, I clicked on the link that explained what a Byronic hero was. Anyway, as I was reading the characteristics, it did sounds like Edward As I continued down the website, it mentioned that Lestat from the Vampire Chronicles and the Phantom from the Phantom of the Opera were Byronic heros as well, but I digress with the Phantom. That made me think about how much Lestat and Edward were alike in the sense that they are both Byronic heros. I think that’s the reason why I don’t like either character. I mean, it’s not that I hate them, but it’s just that they’re not my favorites characters from their respective series. Anyway, I think that’s the reason why I don’t like Lestat and Edward is the fact that they’re Byronic heros.

In my search for any Lestat vs. Edward stuff, I found quite a few pictures that made fun of Edward and the Twilight series or making fun of the fact the Twilight series “outshines” the Vampire Chronicles. The one that I found to be the most funny was the one where it showed Edward and Bella together in the first box, and the following three boxes showing Louis, Lestat, and Armand telling their opinions on the series. I found that Lestat’s and Armand’s reactions to be the most funny. Their reactions were classic Lestat and Armand. Anyway, the next one that I thought was funny was the one where Lestat as picking on Edward. I just found those funny. By the way, you can find the originals at this site.

No cinema, a trajetória dos vampiros já é semelhante à do aprendiz de mágico nascido na Inglaterra: o primeiro livro, Crepúsculo (que chega ao Brasil pela editora Intrínseca, 390 págs., R$ 39,90), virou filme e estreará em dezembro nos EUA. À semelhança das obras de J. K. Rowling, o quarto livro de Stephenie, Breaking down, previsto para agosto, está recebendo tratamento vip com esquema de vendas a partir de meia-noite nas grandes livrarias. A popularidade desses novos personagens já inspirou nomes de bandas de rock, centenas de comunidades de sites de relacionamento e seus nomes aparecem impressos em camisetas. Antes mesmo de suas histórias serem editadas aqui, elas já podiam ser lidas em sites da internet devidamente traduzidas pelos fãs.

É certo que há muito marketing promovendo a nova escritora e seus personagens carismáticos, e nem poderia ou deveria ser diferente. Mas é um fato que a vampiromania foi crescendo até explodir no último ano – e vale lembrar que boa parte da propaganda começou boca a boca, leitor com leitor, adolescente com adolescente. Alguns trechos do primeiro romance se tornaram cults como o momento em que Bella descobre que o lindo garoto por quem está encantada é mesmo um vampiro: “De três coisas eu estava convicta. Primeira, Edward era um vampiro. Segunda, havia uma parte dele – e eu não sabia que poder esta parte teria – que tinha sede do meu sangue. E terceira, eu estava incondicional e irrevogavelmente apaixonada por ele”. A paixão compartilhada por ambos é sempre contida, paira sobre Bella a ameaça do vampirismo de Edward. Se ele ultrapassar o sinal, ela estará morta.

Nas cenas românticas, nunca fica claro se ele deseja ter relações sexuais com Bella ou apenas se alimentar do seu sangue, mordendo- lhe a jugular. Num trecho, ela diz: “Eu podia sentir seu hálito frio em meu pescoço, sentir seu nariz deslizando por meu queixo, inspirando (…)”. E ele sussurra: “Só porque estou resistindo ao vinho, não quer dizer que não possa apreciar o buquê. Você tem um aroma floral, de lavanda ou frésia. É de dar água na boca”. Essa tensão permeia todo o romance e não é diferente dos dilemas humanos que envolvem uma paixão proibida. A autora afirmou em entrevista que foi pressionada a incluir cenas mais explícitas de sexo em seus livros, mas resistiu. Mesmo que algumas passagens sejam sensuais e com insinuações eróticas, os personagens nunca vão além de castos beijos e carinhos no rosto e pescoço – embora demonstrem o tempo todo desejar muito mais do que isso. Nada mais humano, e é justamente com essa humanização dos vampiros que Stephenie parece ter seduzido irrevogavelmente os seus jovens leitores. Os mesmos que J. K. Rowling brindou apenas com o cândido beijo travado entre Harry Potter e Cho Chang.

After being caught up with the “True Blood” craze, I decided to visit some of my favorite vampire movies. “Interview with the Vampire,” directed by Neil Jordan, was one of those movies I saw in early high school that I loved but forgot the details as years went on. I’m surprised this one strongly held up against other horror pictures, especially vampire movies. It’s something I didn’t quite expect because the movies I used to think were scary when I was younger turned out to be silly and vapid in storytelling. Tom Cruise stars as Lestat, a vampire who was as equally hungry for blood as he was with power. He one day decided to make Louis (Brad Pitt) into a vampire because, at least according to him, he wanted to give Louis a choice to relieve his pain of losing his wife and child. Despite turning into the undead, Louis still managed to hang onto his humanity by refusing to feed on humans. This bothered Lestat and thought that Louis’ loneliness would be eliminated by giving Louis a companion–in a form of a vampire child played by Kirsten Dunst. But this all happened in the past as the details which covered centuries were revealed by Louis to an enthusiastic reporter (Christian Slater). Although I did read the novels by Anne Rice, I only could remember three things: Louis, Lestat and the passion (both good and bad) between the two. What made me really engaged about this film was not because it was scary in content. I was actually more into Louis’ humanity, his efforts to abstain from human blood, and his eventual search for those who were like him. That romanticism was reflected into the elegant designs of each room in the 18th century to the dark corners of the catacombs. Another thing that was interesting was Kirsten Dunst. As an adult actress, she bores me to death because every emotion she wants to portray on screen feels the same. But in this film, she had range: she was quite magical, menacing, fascinating all rolled into one. For me, “Interview with the Vampire” is a great vampire film because it makes the argument that vampires have the capacity to choose to be good instead of just being one-dimensional fiends who crave blood and live for centuries. Although necessary to paint the nature of vampire, the gore, the violence, and the evil were secondary. It was consistent, thrilling, and very interesting.

Allen, Celtics managing partner and co-owner Wyc Grousbeck, Grousbeck’s classic rock band French Lick, the Elan Trotman Band and a host of Boston sports all-stars and celebrities are teaming up to provide Thanksgiving dinners for Boston Centers for Youth and Families.

The Lansdowne Pub will open its doors for sports enthusiasts, Ray of Hope Foundation supporters and basketball fans alike. As part of the festivities, French Lick will perform their well-known classic-rock covers. Special surprise guests and other musical performances will highlight the event, which will also feature a live auction.

Last night I had the HONOR of background singing for the Beautiful and extremely talented Mrs. Shannon Allen. Elan Trotman invited me to come on board for this amazing event that was held at the Lansdowne Pub near Fenway Park. The show was one of the best musically and vocally that I have been a part of. We were accompanied by Web Roache on bass, Ryan Brown on keys, Anthony Steele on drums, Tyrone Chase on guitar, Danny McClain, Neil Letendre and myself on vocals.

At one point in the show Elan invited the players on stage with us to dance. Rasheed got up and did his two step and as Danny and I sang Big Babys name, he came out and graced us with an old school dance set. It was a surreal night, one of which I will never forget.

Fantasy Premier League - Gameweek 13 Preview

After what’s seemed like an age since the last Premier League matches, we return to domestic action after the international break. Plenty to consider this gameweek as four teams play twice and a host of stars are injured. More on that later.

Last time round saw an above average score of 52 for myself but this was still quite far off the high score of 107. I was not helped by Drogba and Rooney predictably doing nothing in the big clash between Chelsea and Man Utd; while I also had 13 points marooned on the bench via Joe Hart and Scott Dann, who I hadn’t thought would do much vs Liverpool.

Our captain choices did well, with Fabregas having another big week while RVP and Adebayor also had fair contributions. If you had gone with the suggested transfer of Clint Dempsey, he would have scored you seven points too.

Gameweek 12 Top Gun (aka Tom Cruise Approves):

Maverick thinks John Terry is a fool, but his fantasy score last week was good.

Yep, John Terry was Gameweek 12’s Top Gun with the now ubiquitous defender’s score of 15 points for winning goal, clean sheet and three bonus points. The number of times this has happened is ridiculous but fair play if you’ve reaped the benefit.

But wait I hear you cry, there was someone else who also scored 15 points last week. Yes dear readers, for the first time this season we had a tie for highest score of the week. John Carew almost double his season’s score with a goal, two assists and three bonus points in Aston Villa’s 5-1 destruction of Bolton. This means Maverick needs some help in approving so what better person to have than his co-pilot Goose:

It was a struggle bringing him back from the dead, but through the powers of Google search and Photoshop I managed to do it. Maybe next time Iceman will muscle his way in on the show… Elsewhere Gomes saved a penalty to score 14 for Spurs while Wright-Phillips and Fabregas both got 13, the latter getting his fifth straight man of the match award.

On to this week.

Three Captain Choices:

With Torres and Drogba very doubtful and Van Persie and Lampard definitely out, the usual field of captain choices is substantially narrowed. In addition to that Hull, Blackburn, Fulham and Everton all play twice so it might be time for some leftfield thinking in terms of captain this week.

1. Bullard/Hull – Feeling brave? Quite the gamble this one but it could well pay off. Bullard is a good player but has been injured pretty much the whole time he’s been at Hull. He made a belated home debut last week and was the key figure in a win over Stoke scoring an assist and three bonus. Now one whole game isn’t much to go on but with Hull having two games at the KC Stadium, one against lowly West Ham you’d assume he would play a part in anything good Hull may do.

2. Anelka/Chelsea - With Drogba doubtful after Jonny Evans’ kung-fu kick to his ribs, and Fat Frank injured after attempting to sprint in England training, it leaves Nicolas Anelka as the most likely source of points for Chelsea this weekend. They face a home tie against Wolves which is as near to a gimme as you can get. I fully expect a comfortable home win with a goal or two from the Frenchman.

3. Fabregas/Arsenal - Fabregas is fast becoming the new Ronaldo of fantasy football. If in doubt for a captain choice, go with him. Sunderland away is the not the easiest place to go this season, but Arsenal have a good record there in recent years and should have enough to win, even without Robin van Persie.

Gets a Captain's tick.

Three Suggested Transfers In:

1. Eduardo/Arsenal - Now that Van Persie is out for several weeks, joining the already injured Bendtner, the onus falls on Eduardo to lead the line for the leading scorers in the team. He has had a very stop start season so far but has still got two goals and two assists in just over 300 minutes of action, which isn’t bad at all. With full fitness and a new contract in the back of his pocket, he should do well over the next couple of months.

2. Etherington/Stoke – He’s kind of slipped beneath my radar but is one of the form players of the last few weeks. In his last five games he has three assists and two goals as well as a few bonus points. Over the next four weeks, only Arsenal is a game which you would class as tough for Stoke.

3. Alexander/Burnley – His price has gone right up now but as long as Burnley keep getting penalties, he’s still worth it I’d say.

Might be worth a pick.

Three To Avoid:

1. Van Persie/Arsenal - Out for a couple of months in case it wasn’t already clear. Let’s hope he doesn’t rush back from injury like he has done in the past.

2. Benayoun/Liverpool - Has been in great from this season but has tweaked his hamstring. Also, knowing Rafa he’ll probably find a way to drop the Israeli now that Aquilani is approaching full fitness.

3. Bolton players – Bottom of the team stats with just 345 points between them.
