Nell’Inghilterra di metà anni 80, Brian, ragazzo dalle umili origini ma dotato di grande curiosità ed amore per il sapere, viene ammesso all’università di Bristol. Qui crea nuove amicizie e conosce Rebecca, studentessa politicamente impegnata di cui si invaghisce. Intanto la sua quasi sterminata conoscenza gli permette di partecipare con altri compagni ad un quiz televisivo. Nel gruppo c’è anche Alice, tanto avvenente quanto frivola, che seduce Brian con il proprio fascino.

Quale delle due ragazze scegliere? Qual’è la risposta esatta? In amore come nei quiz è difficile decidere ciò che è giusto quando si ha poco tempo ed un alto margine di rischio. Brian sarà capace di scegliere bene in entrambi i campi?

Il film ricostruisce con realismo uno spaccato della società inglese degli anni 80, lasciando trapelare le problematiche del tempo con annessi riferimenti politici al governo Thatcher.

Tuttavia l’accuratezza dell’ambientazione non lo salva, con la trama che si squaglia via via nella prevedibilità. Scene e situazioni già viste e facenti ormai parte del “catalogo” da cui si attinge quando si gira una pellicola per adolescenti.

Personaggi tipizzati e anche piuttosto “sfigati”, vestiti come peggio non si potrebbe secondo la moda del tempo unita alla più totale assenza di gusto. Da incubo i maglioncini multicolori indossati su pantaloni a vita altissima o le canottiere ben in vista sotto camicie aperte sul petto.

Il lieto fine poi è d’obbligo con l’amore che trionfa nella banalità e mette a posto tutti i problemi.

Last week, five of us left the comfort of the Magazine Laboratory (aka. MagLab) to go to London for the PTC New Journalist Awards with our course tutor, Jane.

Lottie, me, Amy, Ollie and Jess: the MagLab five at the PTC awards.

Whilst this not only gave us the opportunity to put on our gladrags, rub shoulders with journalistic types and have a fancy lunch, we also put our Twittering skills into practice and attempted to Twitter the day’s happenings – and got a little confused about hashtags and pipes in the process.

The day kicked off with three masterclasses with some of the industry’s top people.

• Shortlist’s editorial director, Phil Hilton and Vogue’s acting associate editor, Celia Duncan gave us some top tips for entering into the magazine industry (including the need to look good when under pressure and panic quietly).

• Skymag’s editor Lysanne Currie and Redwood Publishing’s creative director, Paul Kurzeja gave us an insight into the customer magazine industry (Lysanne also proved it’s possible to walk in extremely high-heels - hers were about 7-inches high. Impressive. A talking point at lunch).

• Management Today’s editor, Matthew Gwyther and United Business Media’s group director, Adrian Barrick revealed they both came from Woolwich where the first UK McDonalds was opened (as well as discussing the importance of web-based media). Interestingly, Ollie used to do stapling for Adrian Barrick; unfortunately he didn’t remember him or his stapling skills. 

After exhausting the supply of nibbles and wine in the foyer, we proceeded to the ‘ballroom’ for lunch and the presentation of the awards.

The top award – the PTC New Journalist of the Year award – went to Tom Vaughan, Caterer and Hotelkeeper, Reed Business Information.

Joy (Cameron Diaz) é uma mulher que, como dizem por vezes durante o filme, programa o que vai programar, então, como tudo já está devida e previamente planejado, ela não costuma se divertir muito. Jack Fuller (Ashton Kutcher) é mais ou menos o contrário dela, não tem o hábito de se preocupar com as coisas, é (supostamente, alguns diriam) divertido e espontâneo. Após Joy ter sido dispensada pelo noivo na frente de todos, antes de ele notar que ela estava preparando uma festa surpresa, e Jack ter sido demitido pelo próprio pai, ambos decidem afogar as mágoas no clichê para a ocasião: Las Vegas.

Lá, os dois por engano ficam no mesmo quarto, e, após alguns litros de álcool, acabam se casando. Na manhã seguinte, prontos para pedir anulação, Jack ganha 3 milhões em um caça-níqueis com uma moeda de Joy. No tribunal, o Juiz R.D. Whopper, superconservador, diz que eles só podem ficar com o dinheiro se fizerem de tudo para que o casamento dê certo, por seis meses.

Como uma boa comédia romântica, o filme abusa de clichês e mais clichês. A originalidade está em alguns poucos personagens secundários, ainda que eles praticamente não tenham falas. As atuações não são nada primorosas. Vale ressaltar que os protagonistas são Cameron Diaz e Ashton Kutches, e o filme conta com a participação “especial” de Queen Latifah, portanto não esperem por nada muito artístico…

O longa tem algumas cenas engraçadas de verdade, mais pela surpresa (não é todo filme do gênero que coloca comédia no meio das cenas românticas) do que pelo ato em si. Bem, apesar de sua superficialidade de dar inveja a qualquer participante do Simple Life, Jogo de Amor em Las Vegas até que é um bom passatempo.

O bom de assistir a um filme em pré-estréia não é ter visto antes da maioria, mas poder entrar e sair da sala escura totalmente isento das opiniões tanto dos “textos de especialistas” quanto dos que, ao invés de procurar deleite no ato de frequentar a sala escura, só têm prazer em críticas destrutivas.

É provável que este “Jogo de Amor em Las Vegas” seja massacrado pelos que querem novidades em relação às chamadas comédias românticas, com os argumentos mais que desastrados de que é tudo que se faz no tal “gênero das comédias românticas” (aspas nisso, vindo de alguém que odeia classificações e rótulos) é óbvio, açucarado demais ou ultrapassado.

O filme de Tom Vaughan tem um roteiro (de Dana Fox) mais que óbvio, e nem por isso perde a graça para quem vai ao cinema em busca de boas doses de romantismo em meio a desencontros. “Jogo de Amor em Las Vegas” não surpreende em momento nenhum, é menos charmoso e inteligente que o recente “O Melhor Amigo da Noiva” e fica longe de ser um filme maravilhoso. Mas é ótimo entretenimento para quem não busca mais que isso, faz rir e emociona os que não bloqueiam seus sentimentos.

O filme ainda conta com boas atuações de Cameron Diaz (por sinal, este filme tem uma ótima cena de Cameron embalada por o que eu chamo de música com “poder de fogo”, no caso “What a Feeling”, que me fez lembrar a já clássica “cena musical do restaurante” de “O Casamento do Meu Melhor Amigo” , de 1997, com “I Say a Little Prayer For You”) e Ashton Kutcher (sempre ótimo, mas sempre com papéis muito parecidos), além de coadjuvantes competentes e uma ponta de luxo da grande Queen Latifah.

A propósito do título (“What Happens in Vegas…”, no original), no quesito cassinos é melhor optar por “Quebrando a Banca“, ainda em cartaz: Las Vegas é o que menos importa no filme. Quem prefere filmes de ação ou aventura irá encontrar opções melhores no circuito. Mas quem gosta de comédias românticas nos moldes tradicionais e sem grandes reviravoltas ou surpresas pode ir às salas escuras assistir a este delicioso “Jogo de Amor em Las Vegas” que não irá se arrepender.

Don’t be surprised if you get a slight feeling of déjà vu while you’re watching “What Happens in Vegas”. If you’ve watched movies, and particularly romantic comedies, for very long you’ll have seen many of these elements before.

The story is about an odd couple who find themselves locked together in a marriage that neither of them wants to be in. With this kind of idea you need some kind of contrivance to push those two people together. Here it is indeed a contrivance, but if you’re prepared to give the film an easy ride you’ll buy it.

Look back far enough, or watch enough classic movies on video, and you’ve seen movies like this dating back to the 1930s, from Capra’s “It Happened One Night”, to the screwball comedies that starred Rock Hudson and Doris Day in the early 1960s. More recently “What Happens in Vegas” is a slightly less laddish Judd Apatow movie. He’s the guy who directed “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up”.

Well, “What Happens in Vegas” is basically that two New Yorkers, very opposite in character, both decide to vacation there and drown their sorrows. Jack Fuller (played by Ashton Kutcher) is – for the benefit of the guys in the audience, a bit of party animal and an underachiever. His reason for going to Vegas is that his father (Treat Williams) has fired him from a job in the furniture factory he owns. Cameron Diaz is Joy McNally, a somewhat driven stock trader, who flies there to recover after her fiancé (Jason Sudeikis) dumps her in front of all their hiding friends at his surprise birthday party.

Each of them is there with that other staple character of romantic comedies, the best buddy. Jack’s friend is a very bad lawyer Steve “Hater” Hader (Rob Corddry). Joy’s is the smart-mouthed and cynical Tipper (Lake Bell). Of course there’s a bit of antagonism and attraction between these two also. Equally predictably, they later become a threat to true love’s course.

To cut a not so long set up even shorter Jack and Joy get drunk together with a view to a one-night stand perhaps, and make a not so sober decision to visit a Vegas wedding chapel. Next morning they realize their mistakes and decide they’ll file for an annulment once they get back to New York. That plan is spoiled when Jack used one of Joy’s coins to play a slot machine and wins a $3 million jackpot. If only jackpots like this were as easy to win in reality as they are in romantic comedies.

Of course, in reality they’d find a way to split the money and get their annulment, but here Judge Whopper, (Dennis Miller), who is not happy with much in the modern world and particularly with people disrespecting the sanctity of marriage refuses to settle things. He doesn’t allow an easy option. They both have to do “six months hard marriage”, and regularly visit a marriage counselor (played by Queen Latifah) to prove they really are making every effort. The first one to wimp out on the deal loses his or her half of the money.

So the odd-couple plot thickens, as the ultra-organized and even anal Joy moves into Jack’s sloppy apartment. And the slackerish Jack has to learn to get along with a woman who demands he puts down the toilet seat and stop leaving his dirty laundry lying around.

This is where it becomes more Rock Hudson and Doris Day, although with a more modern edge, than Judd Apatow, as the two of them each have their own agenda, and an underlying hostility. At least in Apatow’s “Knocked Up” there was really only the fact that these characters were like chalk and cheese to deal with. Here, both have a lot to gain from actually cheating each other.

This is where the movie begins to take off, as Joy puts temptation in Jack’s path so he’ll cheat on her, as he tries to revive her romance with her former boyfriend, as he pretends to be a victim of domestic violence, and she proves otherwise.

And we all know what happens next. The two of them inevitably get closer. Jack’s family finds Joy an absolute delight, and his marriage a proof that he’s taking on some responsibility at last. And Jack manages to get on extremely well with Joy’s boss Banger (Dennis Farina), and increase her chances of getting a promotion.

Dana Fox’s screenplay doesn’t bring any great surprises our way. It even has the obligatory romantic comedy big misunderstanding towards the end, although it’s not quite the big misunderstanding we expect. Both Kutcher and Diaz could probably play these roles without even trying. And the supporting players are given plenty of opportunity to take their scenes and run with them.

You have to stay with it to fully enjoy it though. The beginning, for me, was frankly awful. British director Tom Vaughan tries way too hard to get the zany screwball comedy atmosphere. A scene in which they are all deciding to go to Vegas is just plain embarrassing. And Cameron Diaz, who is best at comedy when she’s more subtle, is overdoing it like crazy and even mugging. Everyone is trying just too hard to impress at the beginning, and it has just the opposite effect. Once everyone relaxes a bit and the characters themselves have a little space to come to the fore it improves a lot.

It’s not technically a very impressive film, and doesn’t do much to capture either the glitz or the potential romance of its locations. In fact, much of it looks like a TV sitcom more than anything else. It stands or falls mostly on the performances, and the situations, which get funnier as it goes on.

The movie’s made by Fox studios who are releasing it now as an alternative for audiences who aren’t into the comic book world of “Iron Man” or the computer game world of the Wachowski brothers’ poorly reviewed “Speed Racer.” Regular listeners to my reviews will know that I am often wary of the clichés of romantic comedy, but this still seemed to provide better chances of entertainment than “Speed Racer” which – from what I have seen – combines formulaic scripting with unreal Tron-like visuals. I still haven’t forgiven the Wachowski brothers for “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions”, and was never even as impressed by “The Matrix” itself as were many viewers.

I’d guess that for most couples, if the guy is choosing which movie to see it’ll be “Iron Man” or “Speed Racer”. If the female half chooses, it’ll be “What Happens in Vegas”. A couple of small scenes just before the credits provide a final humorous sting in the tale, which you don’t always get in this kind of movie. I wouldn’t say it offers anything new, and you might forget it within a very short time of seeing it, but it is highly enjoyable and escapist enough once it finds its own pace.

We’d heard James Corden attended the London premiere of new film What Happens in Vegas and now we have video of him on his way in.

Corden’s connection to the film? He starred in director Tom Vaughan’s previous film Starter for Ten.

Lui (Ashton Kutcher) è uno scapolo che pensa più a divertirsi che al resto, fino a quando, sul posto di lavoro, viene licenziato perfino dal proprio padre. I due si incontrano per caso a Las Vegas, dove hanno deciso di passare un week-end di solo divertimento, per distrarsi dai rispettivi problemi. Così dopo una notte di gioco ai casinò, alcool e sesso sfrenato, al mattino finiscono per ritrovarsi sposati. L’unica cosa da fare è divorziare al più presto. Il caso vuole però che durante un litigio lui vinca alla slot-machine 3 milioni di dollari, con una monetina di lei. Entrambi reclamano la vincita e così si finisce davanti al giudice, che infastidito dal loro comportamento li condanna a 6 mesi di… ‘matrimonio forzato’, trascorsi i quali potranno separarsi e dividersi la somma vinta. Così tra situazioni paradossali e tentativi di ingannare l’altro, in cui si troveranno coinvolti amici, genitori e colleghi di lavoro, i due finiranno per conoscersi meglio e per scoprire lati dell’altra persona che mai avrebbero immaginato. Fino a quando Joy (la Diaz) scoprirà che l’unica persona che l’ha mai fatta sentire davvero se stessa, e con cui non ha mai dovuto fingere di essere un’altra o cercare di essere migliore a tutti i costi, è Jack (Kutcher). Indovinate voi come andrà a finire.
Quella diretta da Tom Vaughan è una commedia allegra e divertente. Una pellicola senza troppe pretese che finisce per sorprendere il pubblico con la sua vivace simpatia. Non sono poi tanti neppure i luoghi comuni che spesso si incontrano in queste storie.
‘Notte brava a Las Vegas’ è da vedere quando si ha voglia di evadere dalla noia con un racconto d’amore frizzante e mai noioso.
Complimenti in particolare a Cameron Diaz, che ancora una volta dimostra di riuscire a dare il meglio di se quando non si prende troppo sul serio ma ironizza su se stessa, e finisce con il divertirsi ad interpretare il suo personaggio. Con la sua bellezza e la sua recitazione spumeggiante ci regala più di qualche sorriso.

I would like to meet the salesmen who sold this movie to the studio. The film is full of tired, movie cliches that have been used dozens of time on the big screen and on every sitcom in the 80’s and 90’s. Dana Fox’s screenplay is an assult on the intellegence of every movie goer who will sit in a theater and pay good money to see her film.

An unlikely couple comes together from across the country and find each other married in Vegas. Of course they were so wasted at their wedding, they don’t realize what they’ve done until they wake up the next morning. This whole idea of them getting married while they were drunk is just ridiculous. Beside the fact it’s against the law in the state of Nevada to marry while intoxicated, it’s equally unbelievable that the justice would marry them!

They agree a divorce is necessary and plan to go their respective ways until Jack (Ashton Kutcher) wins three million dollars at the casino using a quarter given to him by Joy (Cameron Diaz). Craziness ensues until they end up in divorce court to settle who is owed the money. In an act of movie zaniness, the judge who sentences them to “six months of hard marriage” after which the money can be spit evenly. However they figure out if one of them files for divorce in the mean time the other gets the entire three million dollars.

The rest of the movie is full of insipid one liners and predictable gags, I’m not surprised to learn that many people have walked out on this movie half way through. If you do suffer all the way until the end, I know you won’t be shocked to learn these two crazy characters find they have more in common with each other then they originally believed. This movie was a waste of Ashton and Cameron’s talent. You may chuckle a couple of times, but I guarantee you’ll spend most of the time rolling your eyes. This film gets a half of star.
