The reforms that the Texas Legislature enacted into law after the Sharpstown Bank scandal (1971-1972

The reforms that the Texas Legislature enacted into law after the Sharpstown Bank scandal (1971-1972) included a strengthened Open Meetings Act.

Now a lawsuit has been filed on December 14 that if successful would weaken the Texas Open Meetings Act. This lawsuit was joined by Pflugerville. Before taking this important step that might begin to undo legislation designed to help prevent corruption in government, would it not have been prudent for the City Council to procure input from the citizens of Pflugerville through means such as a town hall meeting?

Before a vote was taken on whether to join the TOMA lawsuit, what was actually done by the Pflugerville City Council was to discuss the matter in a closed executive session.

A Wikipedia article and the accompanying references cited have information about the Sharpstown Bank scandal.

Saturday, December 12, began the first of many shows for Winter Fashion Week. Top Models Katherine Comet and Chloe Constantine are the organizers of this spectacular event. Twenty-two shows in 9 days is a great feat. With the help of other managers and models, this week will be one that we hope is written about for weeks to come.

This show was originally planned by The Other Modeling Agency (TOMA). But both Amanda Hinchcliffe, CEO and Leah Osker, COO, have not been seen in Second Life for some time. Thus, leaving the responsibility to continue with the production of the show to Kat and Chloe.

After many bumps along the way, the first day of shows has finally arrived. I am in 6 shows for clothing lines like TORN, DeeTalez, Tres Beau and more. On the first day of shows, Amanda did finally show up and after a bit of drama, we are all continuing to focus on putting on great shows for the rest of the week.

Final 3 shows will be held on December 20. So far, we’ve had a great showing of support and this has been a real team effort by everyone taking part in this event. The show is located on the Other Fashion Island with a beautiful set created by our very own Katherine Comet.

Here are more articles critical of the lawsuit to be directed toward weakening the Texas Open Meetings Act.

“Open meetings: Frivolous lawsuit tries to take the teeth out of the law.” Longview News-Journal, November 29, 2009.

Will Pflugerville’s participation in the lawsuit really have a positive effect on the image of the city??

The opinion article by Bill Hobby that appeared in The Pflugerville Pflag this week under the headli

The opinion article by Bill Hobby that appeared in The Pflugerville Pflag this week under the headline, ”State’s Open Meetings laws being challenged” also appeared in the Austin American-Statesman in an online edition and in the print edition on November 28, 2009, under the headline, “Open Government – with no strings attached - should remain state law.”

Also see the November 28, 2009, entry in this blog.

It may be too late to follow the advice offered in the article to “Contact your city leaders and encourage them not to join in an effort that could weaken open meetings laws.” A vote by the Pflugerville City Council at the October 13, 2009, meeting has already been taken to join the lawsuit challenging the Texas Open Meetings Act. This took place after a closed executive session. The residents of Pflugerville were not permitted to hear the discussion that preceded the vote.

It may not be too late to ask City Council members to reconsider the action taken to join the lawsuit. It seems likely that a majority of Pflugerville residents would support such reconsideration. This time, however, it should be insisted that any discussion preceding another vote not take place in a closed executive session.
