Wow. This movie was painfully bad. There are many reasons why, here’s a few of them:

-Brendan Fraiser. Does this guy even try any more?

-No chemistry between the son and that ninja girl, yet they were supposed to have witty banter apparently.

-So he has a kid in college now, but hasn’t aged? Like, at all?

-Painfully long and unoriginal action scenes.

- Many, many more.

Overall, awful movie.

When a sequel receives generally-poor reviews and still manages to pull in over $400 million worldwi

When a sequel receives generally-poor reviews and still manages to pull in over $400 million worldwide, it’s testament to how strong the brand name is. Mummy 3 cashes in on the good name of its predecessors and ultimately fails to deliver on more than one front. My largest qualm is the demolishment of the Evy character. Once a genuinely intriguing character powered by Rachel Weisz (whose last name is impossible to pronounce without sounding like a jackass) and pulled into the series along with her brother, Mummy 3 hands the reigns to Maria Bello who completely destroys the part. I have nothing against Maria Bello as an actress completely separate from this franchise (she was brilliant in A History of Violence), but as a counterpart to Brendan Frasier and the majesty of the Mummy legacy, she fails miserably. Overacted from the start, she makes Evy into a lazy, dull, and cringe-worthy screen character who is less authentic than a spray painted Ferrari.

Mummy 3 is also a case study for how poorly certain “comedic moments” translate to a summer action blockbuster. For example, in the midst of a heated battle between the evil cohorts of a reanimated Chinese mummy and the Frasier-led “good guys,” a supposedly-fierce yeti launches a cohort through a field-goal-looking apparatus, and the other yeti signal it was “good” as a referee would. However, it is more out of place and uninvited than if a resurrected Adolf Hitler went streaking at a Chabad conference. Other asides and one-liners make unwanted appearances throughout, and ultimately destroy emotional connections and/or the fourth wall.

What a $140 million budget does provide in aces, however, is a shitton of special effects, explosions, and steamy mummy-on-mummy action. One of my favorite sequences of 2008 is provided in 1946 Shanghai, with Frasier, Bello, and John Hannah giving chase to Jet Li’s digital likeness with a truck full of fireworks. Push giving way to shove, the fireworks “somehow” ignite and a gorgeous display of pyrotechnics lights up the entire screen. The epic terra cotta mummy versus reanimated slave mummy war towards the end of the film is far less grandeur than the pitched battle in Mummy Returns, which is Mummy 3’s heart. The entire film builds and builds a rather-loose plot for Jet Li’s final push into immortality, and the conclusion is more of a small gasp than a proverbial “go out with a bang.” Tomb of the Dragon Emperor does have its moments, much as the fourth Indiana Jones, yet the film as a whole entity is a disappointment. In my eyes, it is an over-reliance on digital effects and explosions and less time spent scripting a tight, hole-proof plot and well-designed characters that kills any momentum from its predecessors’s not to say I wasn’t entertained -and when all the critique is boiled away that’s what these films are all about- but I’ve come to expect more from my action blockbusters post-Dark Knight and Iron Man.

Conclusion: Every moment with Maria Bello not on screen was enjoyable (approximately 34 of 112 minutes)

I’m not opposed to sequels. Really, I’m not. There are a number of films whose sequels live up to or exceed the quality of the original.

Many sequels, however, flop. They fail for a variety of reasons–lackluster script, poor acting, disorganization, forced punchlines…etc. However, I find that one vice which cripples many sequels is casting–casting a replacement for an established lead or supporting actor. You know the ones. I have nothing against Maria Bello. I’m not familiar with her other works, but I’m sure that given the right material she could do well. But she is not Rachel Weisz. That may be enough said, but I expound. She lacks her charm, her spunk, and her sex appeal. Worse, she misrepresents the character of Evelyn; and perhaps still worse, has zero chemistry with Brendan Fraser–which seems nearly impossible. If you can’t get the lead actress from the first two films in a series, here’s a hint: don’t make a third. Sure, you might make a profit before word spreads that it isn’t worth the hefty cost of a theater ticket. But if you still have the decency to create a film for reasons other than money, do credit to the first two films and those who worked hard to make them. If Rachel Weisz can’t jump on board because the script is mediocre (maybe just a rumor), take another look at the script. Some actors can be prima donnas, but are you really proud of the script for this hokey third installment?

Bear in mind that I very much enjoyed The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. The love shared between Rick and Evelyn somehow died before Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and feeble attempts to reignite it were futile in the face of no chemistry. One or two sentences were meant to bring us up to speed on why the relationship between the O’Connells and their son Alex had soured, but the excuse failed to explain the extent of the damage. People change, and roughly fifteen years is a bit of time, but could the sweet, adventurous blonde boy from the second movie loved and cherished by his parents become a womanizing bad boy? Especially with no explanation?

The script hardly provided opportunities for any of the characters to shine, although Brenden Fraser did his best to portray what was written, and seemed to pull off “sad” rather well in spite of changes made to his inherent character. Still, Fraser’s heart didn’t seem to be in it. Likely in part due to change of actress, Evelyn had very little translating to do, and her knowledge of history rarely came into play. Jet Li did well enough, and I’m a fan, but the mummy was not nearly so cool as the one from the first two installments. The story was a little confusing, but ironically not as intricate.

The special effects were not nearly as impressive, although the little eye thing that turned all kinds of crystal and liquid dazzled me for an instant. Thank goodness Fraser and Luke Ford served as some eye candy. And pretty Asian girls with martial arts skills always enhance a film. The guys can drool while the girls can feel slightly empowered. But just as there was no ignoring a change of lead, there was no ignoring a change of director, and the differences of style were painful.

I wish I could give this film high marks. The series is by no means Oscar-worthy but it’s certainly highly entertaining. I just feel like smacking industry people sometimes and screaming “why?” Why make another when you know–and they had to know–the script, direction, acting, and chemistry don’t live up to the series’ standards? At least John Hannah’s Jonathan Carnahan was consistent. But how I missed Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay.

Let me say this right of the top, Mummy 3 is a flop. It has tried to re-create the hype felt over the first two (Brilliant) movies but right from the start you can tell it is dead on its feet. I was warned not to go see it, that it was a waste of money and time. It is a waste of time, but not entirely a waste of money.

All of the actors are obviously past their prime (With the exception of Luke Ford (Jonathan) who was always a presence in the other films. He lives up to his normal, self preserving self and does it with the same old energy that made him so like able to me.

Brendan Fraiser is past his prime. And the fact that they couldn’t get Rachael Weitz (Sorry if that is spelt incorrectly) to play the feminine lead means to me that she obviously was the smart one in the group. The son is woefully predictable in his emotional ties, as is everyone else (Save Jonathan). Yet, even though a lot of the film is focused on the romances that occur, it doesn’t explore them in any detail other than “I love you, but we can’t be together.” Even thought i am not a fan of Soppy films, it needed to be a little more soppy.

Jet Li. Not enough of him. good that he only spoke Chinese (Which by the way is highly inaccurate) but not enough of him. And as for every second character changing language every third word, it is confusing and pointless. What else is pointless is that every time something happens, the Movie has to explain what is happening. It is so demeaning that it even makes you dumb while you watch it, so much so that Ozzyfrog actually asked me why so and so wanted so and so dead.

The CGI was also a let down. From the past films, and indeed from the fact that we are in the 21st century, one would expect that the CGI would be believable. This is not the case in the Mummy 3. I would say that the CGI from the first two films is superior to this film in every way possible.

While the film does have some saving moments, Jonathan proposing to a yak and the Yeti helping the good guys, the sheer failure to live up to the predecessors makes it a “Must not see”

Rating: 1.5/5. Drawn out yet not long enough and no where near as exciting as i hoped it to be.

Other possible titles: The Mummy returns…again. But this time, because we can’t get Chris Vosloo to play the mummy, we hired someone who probably didn’t know what he was getting into when he sighed on

Jumpin’ fuzzy lizards, its been a long time since I’ve posted. Don’t have much to report. Don’t think i’ve been to any movies I haven’t told you about… Except TDK, but you all know about that already I’m sure, lol. In case you don’t, it was awesome and you should have seen it.

I’m going to try to see “The House Bunny” on Friday, but no guarantees. It looks pretty funny, and I’m up for anything Playboy. Except the “Playboy Video” stuff. Thats no good. Bad music, funny angles, bad camera-work. The photographers and models are top-rate, but the video is terrible.

Anyway. Oh wait… I saw Mummy 3 aswell. It was little different from the first two. Typically “bad” 90’s movie stuff. But if you liked the first two (I did) you’ll probably like this one. Although it still pisses me off that Rachel Weisz didn’t play Eve again. Its worth the matinee, thats for sure.

This month’s issue of Maxim, which should be on stands for another week, had an interesting article on Rhino Poaching. It seems that India has a resident bad-ass who has no qualms over killing poachers in a most brutal fashion. Anna Kournikova (she’s on the cover) looks better than ever in this one. And as usual, it featured a couple of women that Maxim decided to call up-and-comers, even though I’ve never heard of the actresses or the movies/shows they are supposedly in. Which is par for the course I guess :/

There is also a big feature on the upcoming football season. Its like 30 pages. Football fans should check it out.

That’s all folks.

Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, John Hannah, Michelle Yeoh

An evil Chinese emperor wants to rule the world and seeks immortality, but he is cursed along with his army and now he is awake and wants revenge.

The third of a series of movies that started well, but like most of films that had success the second sequel is nothing like the previous ones. It is obvious that the producers where counting on the success of Mummy 1 and 2 and they didn’t even bother to make a descent scenario. It was just plain action and nothing more. We are ok with action when we know that we are going to see only blood spilling everywhere, but when we know that you can do something better then we expect to see something better. Rachel Weisz must have read the script before she refused to repeat the part of Evelyn.

Maria Bello was not persuasive at all trying to maintain an English accent. Fraser must hate his life for being in it. The romance between Alex and Lin was not remotely touching and I was trying hard to find a really good joke in the whole movie. You can also see yetis and from their moves and actions I can guess they watch a lot of TV.

Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh are always good, because they always kick ass with style so they need nothing more to prove.

For those of you who don’t really pay attention to movies, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is the third in the series of the modern Mummy movies, the first of which was a very loose remake of a 1932 horror movie of the same name. The difference between the original pre-war movie and the modern trilogy is that the horror movie feel has been dumped in theme of a much more swashbuckling adventure romp. Herein lies the bones of the trilogy…the movies are more like Indiana Jones meets Pirates of the Caribbean and are fleshed out by witty one-liners (mainly courtesy of Brendan Fraser), clever visual gags and spectacular action scenes, many of which are filled with gorgeous CGI effects. So now that we’ve set the movie in context, lets review the latest offering…

+++ Positives +++

Its the same old adventuring romp

Brendan Fraser still funny

Delightful in-joke to the casting change of Rachel Weisz to Maria Bello for the part of Evie.

Impressive CGI.

Yeti’s. Seriously.

The backstory is inventive, with clever and creative use of chinese history eg The terracotta army is a key plot point

— Negatives —

Some really under par acting by some of the cast. Luke Ford I’m looking at you in particular.

Gaping plot holes all over the place. You honestly have to force yourself to ignore them.

Totally unnecessary and pretty unused relationship between one of the supporting Villains, a Chinese general and one of his officers. What in the world was that about?

No Rachel Weisz (she left due to “scripting problems – I can see why). Maria Bello just not good enough.

Michelle Yeoh badly underused. Also appears to have aged not so well, but hopefully that was just make up.

Some plot points make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Case in point – When Han bathes in the pool of life at Shangri-La he re-emerges as a THREE HEADED DRAGON.

Too creative with Chinese history at some points.

Conclusion: The movie is pretty much what it says on the tin. Its a Mummy movie, set in China. If you really enjoyed the first 2, by all probability you will probably enjoy this one for the same reasons. Be warned however, it is definitely the weakest of the trilogy, perhaps on a par with the Scorpion King spin-offs.

Overall rating – 4 Terracotta soldiers out of 10.
Stay Classy,

Ian

What the hell!!! Take a decent franchise, waste loads of money and ruin it. I remember watching the first mummy after standing in a long queue, and again the second one in a smaller but respectable queue. A plot of course is not expected of it, but where is the humor and action synonymous to this movie.

I went to see Rick O connell and evy raise, and then do there best effort to kill another mummy. I liked the trailer, and I liked the shift of scene to China. Dissappointment is all I got! 200 rupees down the drain. Too many characters on screen, and nobody gets credit for anything. Some dude, who is Rick’s son unearth’s the mummy. That too in a very simple fashion with a few booby tricks thrown in for ‘effect’. You are in china, come up with some original tricks for gods sake. If Rick and eve are retired then why make a movie in the first place. Most of the action scenes are done by, oh wait, no not Rick, but his son. Again for what joy. I know the director cannot just ‘delete’ the fact that a son was introduced in the second movie, but I don’t see any problem why any of the scenes done by this son, could not have been done by Rick himself. Is Brendan Fraser getting too old to act in the next mummy movie? No wonder Rachel weiz did not want to act in garbage of a movie. There are so many characters in this movie. There is Rick, evy, his son, jonathan, some chinese babe, her mom. Not one of them have a single good scene. I don’t even want to mention the chinese mummy emperor because he is not even half as cool as the other mummies. Not worth watching. Just do not watch it. I say this with confidence, as the only other 5 individuals, who were sitting in the theatre with me, sure did not watch it.

months before the release of this movie i was hoping for something really good from director

something that is somewhat similar to the previous installments yet different in a way

but what i had watched recently certainly isn’t similar in any way to the previous Mummy movies

there’s not even a single mummy in sight

well, the title implies that there should be mummies or maybe, creatures wrapped in linen

however, what we see in here is three- headed dragons, the Yeti (abominable snowmen) and a fur- covered triceratops

and there’s Maria Bello as Evelyn O’Connell, replacing Rachel Weisz

she just don’t act like the scholarly Evelyn whose attitude is in contrast to the sarcastic Rick O’Connell

she’s completely different, like another person

i miss Rachel Weisz!!

but i’m glad that Rob Cohen didn’t make a wrong choice in casting Michelle Yeoh as sorceress Zi Juan and Isabella Leong as her daughter Lin

perhaps, i wouldn’t be really bothered about those things mentioned above if the movie was entertaining

the movie was one huge cliche, same old script with same old jokes

the clichés in this movie seem to be never- ending and i kinda like can expect what the next scene will be

the movie progresses exactly like the previous Mummy movies, hardly any different

however there are few hilarious moments

one of it was Rick O’Connell trying to catch some fish for dinner, and with him failing to do so decided to SHOOT the fishes with his gun; during dinner time when the fish is served, Evelyn eats it and found a bullet in the fish

the sight of skeletons being harmlessly skewered by arrows

one more thing that disappoints me is the portrayal of Jet Li as the Dragon Emperor

he doesn’t have a frightening aura as an evil emperor, and he’s kinda gay

he’s just a pyrokinetic and cyrokinetic emperor with a shape- shifting ability, that’s all

his awakening don’t seem like something that will destroy all mankind, unlike what we see in Mummy and The Mummy Returns where unspeakable evil is once more free to roam the Earth and rule

all in all, this movie has managed to entertain me a lil bit and there’s lots of room for improvement

i love the O’ Connells mansion!

my rating: 5 out of 10

Just had a really awesome weekend, simple but cool…

I had Friday, Saturday and Sunday off, yeah I was surprised aswell. The reason I had it off was because I was meant to be going to Edinburgh for a week, but decided not to, so just had a couple days to do whatever I wanted.

Friday night I went to a friends house in Aberdeen and watched some movies, just chilled out really. Stayed over there and then went to meet the family for lunch, went to this really nice Italian place, went shopping bought a few things and then went home….

Saturday night I went to see the new Mummy Film, which was really good and would recommend it to anyone, its funny and serous at the same time. Brilliant. Film finished at 22:00 and got the train home at 22:50. I got to the train station pretty earlier and no-one was there (look at the picture above). Empty.

Pretty scary….

Plan today; Relax and update my blogs/play games/walk the dogs.

The Mummy remake series has never been about anything beyond the most basest of thrills. Plot holes

The Mummy remake series has never been about anything beyond the most basest of thrills. Plot holes have abounded in both and the second was little more than a glorified version of the first. But quality or no quality, one thing they have always succeeded in giving an unpretentious, no-strings attached, special-effects driven ride. This third one resurrects the franchise with a twist, transposing the idea of the Mummy to Asia (thank God they didn’t bring back Imhotep again) and supplanting director Stephen Sommers with Rob Cohen, director of such “classics” like Stealth and xXx. Okay, sure, his resume’s not too impressive, but what he’s done with the Mummy franchise is. This one may not be as high on the quality ladder as its two predecessors, but its entertainment value is skyscraper high.

It’s been another amorphous amount of time between the last movie and this one, and apparently the time has been so amorphous that Rick O’Connell (played with his usual inimitable cheesy gusto) hasn’t aged at all while his son Alex (a stone Luke Ford) has grown about fifteen to twenty years. And it doesn’t really matter how much Alex’s mother, Evelyn O’Connell, has aged, because she’s played by a different actress this time around. Rachel Weisz turned down the script, so Maria Bello picks up the slack. She isn’t nearly as good as Weisz was in the role, whose effortless chemistry and witty banter with Fraser is part of what made the series so much fun. Bello is a great actress, but this simply isn’t the role for her.

Just like a quiet life isn’t the role for Rick and Evelyn, who spend their days attending fancy functions and writing about their experiences – in other words, they’re bored as hell. Well it’s a sure good thing for them that Alex is about to uncover an Asian mummy (Jet Li, literally without anything to do except walk around encased in clay for a good three-fourths of the movie) thousands of years old who, when unleashed, will rain down destruction (CGI goodness) upon humanity the likes of which has never been seen before!…except in the previous two Mummy films.

Originality obviously isn’t this mummy’s strong suit, but it shouldn’t really matter as long as the action and CGI are up to par enough to compensate, right? Well, I’m happy to report that they are, and this mummy features some of the best effects of the trilogy, and because our heroes are no longer restricted to desert and jungle scenes, they continent-hop all over the world and the dazzling effects keep up with them quite well, including a scene in the mountains where giant yeti battle against the soldiers of the resurrected emperor.

The relationships between the characters are also strengthened this time around – it actually reminded me a bit of the Incredibles in the way that it took some real family drama and transposed it against an epic chaotic backdrop – no, I’m not saying this film is nearly half as good as the razor sharp script that Incredibles had, but it’s at least a step up from the previous two films, where the relationships between the characters were always tertiary to the action. In this flick, they’re merely secondary, and though none of the actors, except Fraser, are particularly good, they’re at least enjoyable to watch bicker back and forth.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, shouldn’t be taken seriously by anyone, really. If you want realism in age differences, in CGI, or even in simply the storyline, you’re probably watching the wrong kind of movie. This new Mummy stays true to the spirit of its predecessors and just serves up an unadorned platter of goofy action. It may be silly, but boy, is it fun.

Cohen se gandeste ca actiunea celei de-a 4-a parti sa aibe loc in Mexic sau in Peru. “Au existat o multime de mumii in cultura azteca. Cred ca ar iesi o poveste buna din asta”, a declarat Cohen.
In The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, arheologul Rick (Brendan Fraser) si fiul sau trebuie sa se lupte cu imparatul chinez, Qin Shi Huang (Jet Li). Dupa al doilea Razboi Mondial, cei doi sunt atrasi de mormintele interzise din China, insa in Muntii Himalaya ei dau fara sa vrea peste o mumie care-si poate schimba forma din cauza blestemului unei vrajitoare.

This summer has given us some very nice movies, with Iron Man, WALL-E, and The Dark Knight to name a few. The Mummy 3 is the latest big-budget summer blockbuster, but it unfortunately doesn’t meet the lofty standard set by the above movies.

It seems like it should be a hit, with romance, suspense, a few well-known actors, and an overdose of CGI action, but in the end the whole thing just turned out to be a meh experience. The story lacks any sort of heart, so you can never be engrossed by it at all, and the humor is so forced that it loses all charm. None of the acting is noteworthy and the characters are forgettable. The action is fine, and it’s probably the best part of The Mummy 3, but a movie needs more than a handful of cool explosions to sustain itself.

I never saw the first two Mummy films, but this one had a plot that could stand on its own without the viewer needing any prior knowledge of the series. Rick O’Connell and his wife Evelyn have retired from being adventurers, but when they are asked to transport a giant stone called the Eye of Shangri-La as a kind gesture from Britain to China, they gladly oblige. However, the Eye is eventually stolen and used to resurrect the evil Dragon Emperor, who was long ago frozen along with his army as terra cotta statues. It’s up to our protagonists to stop the Emperor and his army from becoming immortal and taking over the world.

Now there are a lot more details I could go into, but I don’t feel the need to. The bottom line is that you shouldn’t see this unless you’ve seen all of the other excellent movies that came out this summer, because The Mummy 3 sits near the bottom of the pile.

Pros: Nifty set design, Jet Li, plenty of CGI action

Cons: Almost too much CGI action, uninspired plot, bad attempts at humor, overall forgettable

Final Score: 5.5 out of 10
