The Voice UK: Live Show 1

So, the first live show of The Voice UK is almost upon us. You can watch it LIVE on BBC1 from 7-8.30pm. Team Tom will be performing alongside Team Will in an effort to win the support of the public and receive as many votes as they can to prevent themselves from leaving the competition so early. Read on below to find out who’s singing what.

The Voice UK: Battles Round-Up Part 1

This past weekend was the Battle Rounds for The Voice UK. Each coach paired up their ten acts to compete against each other in a singing battle for survival.

Once introduced to the stage (aptly designed like a wrestling arena) they would both sing the same song together, leaving some parts to show off individually as well.

Each coach must then choose one act to send home and one act to bring through to the live shows which led to a lot of disappointment as many talented acts were sent packing as the calibre was so high.

Bo Bruce vs. Vince Freeman

Winner: Bo Bruce

My verdict: AGREE. Bo is one of my favourites so I can only be pleased for her and for Danny since he has a good chance of winning with Bo on his team. Given the right songs in the live shows, I think the public can easily get behind her and see her finish in a top position.

Jay Norton vs. Jaz Ellington

Winner: Jaz Ellington

My verdict: AGREE. This was a tough battle, but ultimately the song choice suited Jaz much better and I believe he has more potential than Jay when it comes down to the live shows.

Joelle Moses vs. Jenny Jones

Winner: Joelle Moses

My verdict: AGREE. I loved Joelle on The X Factor and now I love her even more on The Voice! I am rooting for her to do well but hope she doesn’t get swallowed up with all the great female singers.

Max Milner vs. Bill Downs

Winner: Max Milner

My verdict: DISAGREE. On paper, I expected Max to win. However, when it came to the actual performance, Bill’s voice was crystal clear compared to the growls of Max which didn’t suit the song very much. Bill was robbed.

Deniece Pearson vs. Ruth Brown

Winner: Ruth Brown

My verdict: INDIFFERENT. Before the show, I predicted Deniece to go through because she is already a professional but as soon as the BBC focused more on Ruth it was obvious she was going to be chosen as a shock result. I didn’t care either way.

Aundrea Nyle vs. Sam Buttery

Winner: Sam Buttery

My verdict: DISAGREE. This was a strange pairing and a strange song choice for both. Sam may have an Elvis quiff but that doesn’t make him sound like him, Tom! In the end, Aundrea sounded strong throughout. What a shame.

Kirsten Joy vs. Toni Warne

Winner: Toni Warne

My verdict: AGREE. Not sure if I’m falling for the sympathy card or for Toni but I really like her (and her horror-film facial expressions when she sings). This was my favourite battle and Kirsten could easily have gone through with another pairing.

Tyler James vs. Heshima Thompson

Winner: Tyler James

My verdict: DISAGREE. Let’s face it, Tyler only got put through because of his connection to Amy Winehouse. Whilst the BBC tried to portray Heshima as a bratty teenager, he slayed Tyler during the battle as Tyler’s voice did not suit it at all.

Vince Kidd vs. Jessica Hammond

Winner: Vince Kidd

My verdict: AGREE. Vince is without a doubt the most unique act in the competition. It’s a shame for Jessica because she had gained a lot of fans and had to accept she was defeated by one of the best acts.

The Voice UK: My Top Auditions

So, just one day before the Battle Rounds of The Voice UK, let me take you through my top choices from the Blind Auditions which were featured over the past 4 weeks.

The Blind Auditions involved each act performing on stage in front of an audience and the four coaches: Will.i.am, Jessie J, Tom Jones and Danny O’Donoghue.

In order for an act to be successful and move on to the next stage of the process, they must convince at least one of the coaches that they have The Voice so that they hit their button and turn around.

Team Danny

Bo Bruce

Bo Bruce has such a unique voice that she can turn a dance song like Usher’s ‘Without You’ into a work of musical art. She stands out purely because she isn’t a convential singer and doesn’t blend in with the other female acts.

Team Jessie

Vince Kidd

Well, what can you say about that audition? It just oozes TALENT. To be able to master an arrangement of a hit like that takes some skill and Vince pulls it off. There’s a reason he is one of the most viewed acts so far.

Team Tom

Barbara Bryceland

This is my controversial top choice. I am such a fan of Barbara, because she seems very respectful and humble and she has the voice to match. She already seems like a star to me, so hopefully she will progress even further.

Team Will

Joelle Moses

You might recognise Joelle from the X Factor in 2008, but after failing to impress she is back for another shot on The Voice, and a welcome change I say! She is one of the best in the competition and deserves to go far.

A Talent show with a twist - but what do you make of it?

Its a fix

So my personal opinion on talent shows is that they are all a total fix and the producers know before they even start filming who will win, but that’s just my opinion. So when I heard about the new talent show on BBC one ‘The Voice’ I was intrigued to see how the BBC dealt with producing a talent show as they are normally produced for ITV – X Factor , Britain’s got Talent. The concept of the show was that the judges would not actually be able to see the contestants, and just judge them on their voice , so I thought to myself is this was society has come to? Is the general message here that if the judges could see them and they had a great voice , but didn’t fit in with the stereotypical image they wouldn’t be chosen?

Abigail Warburton , 23, Manchester ‘I have watched the show and I get very annoyed when the contestants come on and say they are happy that the judges cannot see them as they don’t look like the typical size zero pop star, I’m not surprised so many people have eating disorders in this country if this is the mind-set of people. Disgraceful!’

Last chance salloon?

Danny Donoghue, Jessie J, Tom Jones and WILL.I.AM are all judges for the BBC 1 hit show that has been receiving higher ratings then its rival show Britain’s Got Talent on ITV, much to Simon Cowells disappointment. Unlike the typical talent show where the judges travel the whole way around the UK, The Voice choses a select number of singers to come to London for one of Blind auditions , where the judges are only allowed to choose ten singers each to mentor, so don’t be expecting any tragic singers on this show!

However the show has caused controversy, with singers coming to the audition, who have already had a shot as the music industry. For example Sean Conlon , former member of the popular 1990’s boyband 5IVE audition in week three of the auditions , although much to his disappointment he didn’t get chosen , which begs the question- If the judges had seen him before hand and heard his story would they of had a difference of opinion?

Jessie J says ‘I was so excited about Sean from Five auditioning but I couldn’t believe I didn’t turn around for him. He was the first concert I ever went to.’

Meaning if she saw him before she would have chosen him just because of the background he already has , not necessarily because of his voice. Another hopeful who failed to make the grade was Kerry Ellis, who sings professional on Broadway.

The Judges

However in recent episodes, when the judges eventually see the act, once they have sung the judges hang their heads in shames , saying ‘I’m kicking myself I didn’t choose you’ , which proves that looks are a considered , no matter how good your voice is.

New Tom Jones Biography

Welsh singing legend Tom Jones has been forced to cancel concerts in South Korea and Singapore because doctors have found him to be “genuinely ill,” reports Reuters.

Jones, 69, stopped singing after two songs at Singapore’s Resorts World Sentosa casino and entertainment complex last Friday. The cause? “Acute laryngitis,” declared Jones’ Web site. Physicians are “unable to guarantee that Sir Tom would be able to perform the full show tonight at 100 percent vocal strength,” said the site, despite efforts to rest his voice and the rescheduling of his concert until Thursday.

The vocal problems are serious enough that concerts on Friday and Saturday at the Olympic Fencing Stadium in Seoul have also been cancelled. “In addition, they have warned that by performing, Sir Tom could risk serious permanent damage to his vocals,” said the site.

But there is some hope. Future performances in Oman’s Muscat, South Africa’s Johannesburg and Cape Town, and the United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi are set for April and are expected to go forward as scheduled.

The cancellation of Jones’ concert is the second major setback in short order for the Singaporean entertainment complex. Last week, it shut down the world’s tallest duelling rollercoaster at its Universal Studios theme park, one of its main attractions. Genting Singapore, a unit of Malaysia’s Genting group operates the entertainment complex.

Hairy chest means having more female hormone???

It has long been seen as a sign of masculinity – but men with hairy chests are less attractive to women, according to new research.

A study has found that they prefer a smooth torso, particularly at their most fertile time of the month.

Hairy men are more likely to have higher levels of female hormone oestrogen, which could affect their virility.

The hormone makes hairier men more ‘homely and reliable’, but in theory it could reduce their female partner’s chances of becoming pregnant and means women may subconsciously find them less attractive.

But post-menopausal women – for whom fertility is not an issue – prefer their men hairy.

Researchers at Turku University in Finland took pictures of 20 men before and after they shaved off their body hair. The photos were shown to 550 women aged between 15 and 69.

Only 30 per cent of younger women preferred hairy men, compared with 60 per cent of older women.

The study states: ‘These findings suggest that body hair may play a much more important role in human mate choice than previously thought.’
The results were published in the journal Behavioural Ecology.
