Dear Mr. Horner (a.k.a. The Moon),

I have it on good authority that you are indeed made of green cheese… and that you are most definitely not the moon. I will reserve any comments on your equatorial radius and lack of testicles. While I am indeed old, science progresses at a rate where age may be rendered irrelevant in the near future… thus ensuring more time for me to complete my total World (and Lunar) Domination.

If you keep up this behavior, you will most certainly not be allowed on the moon.

Although, I’m guessing from my blog stats that you have been one of the people exploring my old W(aL)D files. Too bad the beginnings were wiped out in one of the great PittsburghBeat.com crashes. For this studious devotion, your feeble attempts at threatening me will be forgiven. Perhaps one day, you can work up to a position of merit in the W(aL)D army.

Perhaps I need to ramp up the efforts to my World (and Lunar) Domination campaign? Maybe I will need to enlist some generals once again to help in the effort.

Jann S. Wenner em 28 de setembro de 1968, realiza a primeira entrevista completa da Rolling Stones com o meu herói do dia.

Para começar, nesta noite, o meu herói bebia suco de laranja sem LSD, e  falou sobre o próximo disco de sua banda ” Deaf, Dumb and Blind”, que mais tarde rendeu um clássico bastante conhecido: Tommy.
O álbum em questão, influenciou uma das obras primas mais extraordinárias do rock’n'roll: The Dark Side Of The Moon, do Pink Floyd, e criou um pacto eterno do rock com o movimento psicodélico.

Pense num garoto surdo,retardado e cego, que tinha o nariz maior que o mundo. E dizia que por causa de seu nariz escrevia músicas e tocava guitarra.

Nariz a parte, justamente nesta noite de 68, ele não destruiu a sua guitarra no palco do Fillmore West.

Pior, disse nem ligar a mínima para isso.

Bom, é que até hoje, contamos para os nossos afilhados, em volume alto, essa história. É que eu não tenho filhos e não estava lá nesta noite. E tudo começou numa terça-feira durante um show, quando sua guitarra bateu no teto e rachou ao meio…

O meu herói é perfeccionista ao extremo e também grande compositor.
Tocou banjo, violão e girando o seu braço direito contra as cordas de sua guitarra se transformou numa entidade musical. Entidade SIM.

Nascido numa família de músicos, sempre super respeitáveis com ele, que não o impediam de fazer nada.
Nem tocar guitarra, nem fumar maconha, nem ao menos usar a cama de sua mãe para a sua primeira transa.

Na Inglaterra mod de 60, e seu exército de lambretas, ele e sua banda invocavam ação com seus improvisos generosos e composições que permanecem. Essa entidade musical, vivinha da silva, lider de uma das maiores bandas de rock do planeta, já foi The Confederates, The Detours, The Hig NUmbers e por duas vezes The Who.

Um mod agressivo, extremamente elegante e fashion, que cada vez mais é para nós o Rock’n'Roll de hoje,ontem e para todo o sempre. Salve meu herói. Amém.

Lembre-se que ele ganhou um violão de sua avó aos 12 anos de idade e escutou muito rock americano.
Ou ainda, recorde-se daquele garoto surdo, retardado e cego, que tem o nariz maior que o mundo e o coração do tamanho dos anéis de saturno.
Falsamente acusado de molestar criancinhas, provou a sua inocência e cá para mim, queriam pegar ele desde o lançamento de Tommy.

Tommy, personagem central desse épico, era um garoto diferente, que se movia através da música e muitas vezes era molestado pelo seu tio pervertido. Apesar de o significado dessa história jamais ter sido de fato explicada, Tommy é mais precisamente, uma viagem pela infância real e imaginária de meu herói.

Mas peraí, se você agora sabe o nome dele, lamento. Seu rock está precisando de mais uma porção de Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, John Entwistle e Pete Townshend.

Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend vive atualmente em Richmond, Inglaterra, e embora seja mais conhecido por sua carreira musical, se envolveu ostensivamente com o mundo literário, escrevendo artigos em jornais e revistas, resenhas de livros, ensaios e roteiros.
Sofre de surdez parcial, devido a exposição a música em volume alto pelos palcos que incendiou.
O herói do dia nasceu em 19 de maio de 1945 e toca guitarra, piano, sintetizador, banjo, baixo, bateria, violino, bandolim e ukelele.

Tommy

Tommy is 15.  Fourteen years ago, Tommy was found living outside a bar in South Africa…alone.  His only companion was the bar owner’s dog.

Soon after he was found, Tommy was brought to TLC Ministries, a home-based childcare facility outside of Johannesburg, where the director, Thea Jarvis, began to raise him.  He was sick from the time he spent living outside with a dog.  After a string of illnesses it was discovered that he was also HIV positive.  Doctors gave him only weeks to live.

Thea scrounged together enough money to afford the ARV drugs that have saved Tommy’s life.  Today he is a strapping young man.  Tommy is now a leader to the 70 children that live at TLC Ministries.  He is an inspirational speaker (he brought tears to our eyes at the 2009 Joint Council Conference) and is attending trade-school with a goal of being a world-class chef.

But the conditions Tommy was born with, and the illnesses Tommy suffered during the first eight years of life, caused him to miss out academically.  His eyesight is poor, barely able to read the pages of a book.

Zemzem

When you think of Ethiopia, what image first comes to mind?  Whatever it is, our guess is that it is not a vision of a petite powerhouse businesswoman named Zemzem! 

A few years ago, Zemzem and her three children lived on a monthly stipend from a sponsoring charity.  After participating in a family empowerment program that provided basic finance and business management training, Zemzem earns almost three times the amount she had received in the program.

Zemzem has bought a piece of land, built a small retail store and most importantly has continued to provide safety, permanency, and love for her three children.

Over the last year, her business has grown, providing enough to feed her family.  Today she has plans to expand her business and send her children to school.  However, she cannot afford to both feed her family and save the money needed to expand the store.  So during Joint Council’s recent trip to Ethiopia, Zemzem, using the skills she learned through the family empowerment program, presented us with a business plan for a grant.

For my final project, I created an animation around the theme of sleep. It starts off with me going to bed and falling asleep. As I fall asleep, I enter a dream in which I am falling out of the sky. As I fall, several other scenes transition between scenes of me falling. The first scene is of me going to Church like I do with my family. The next is of me skiing and hitting a jump. The other scene is of me playing paintball and getting shot out. All of the animation was done through a first person perspective to give the viewer of it a look through my eyes as I “do” all of these activities.

What these scenes have in common has to do with my original theme of sleep. All of these activities are things that I usually have to wake up early to be able to do. Normally I hate getting up early, and I often sleep into the late afternoons or even sometimes into the evening hours. However, these are very possibly my three favorite activities in the world, and strangely enough, they all cut pretty heavily into the amount of sleep I get the night before.

At the end of my animation, as I get closer and closer to the Earth (the image is an aerial view of the area around my parents’ house in New Hampshire), my bed appears and I fall toward it. Just before I reach it, I wake back up and find that it was all a dream.

Sometimes explaining language and concepts to a 4-year old is difficult. When he asks what a word means, I try to figure out how to explain it using words he already knows.  Last night we were reading his new favorite book called Brain.  He really loves these Smithsonian books with creative titles: Brain. Heart.  Whales.  Storms. Volcanoes. So we were reading the brain book, and in particular the section about the thalamus and the hypothalamus. The text says, “hypo” means “below” in Latin.  So Tommy tells me, “Hey, if my bunk bed was a brain, I sleep on the hypothalamus and the top bunk is the thalamus.” Sometimes I feel like he might be a genius.  So I say “Exactly, very good analogy.” “What’s an analogy?” he asks.  Ummmm.  I think, how do I explain this?  I say, “It’s kind of like when you make two things that are different, like a brain and a bunk bed, seem the same.”  He tells me, “Oh, I get it, it’s like when I fart and brush my Barbie’s hair at the same time?” Yes, that’s exactly what it means.  I’m telling you, genius.

The Who se presentará en el intermedio del Supertazón XLIV del fútbol americano, marcando el primer espectáculo de la banda británica en América del Norte desde el 2008.

Según un reporte de SI.com, el sitio web de la revista Sports Illustrated, la veterana banda ocupará el escenario durante el espectáculo que se realiza en el intermedio del partido del campeonato del 2010 de la Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano (NFL), previsto para el 7 de febrero en Miami.
