Just after New Year’s, the biggest digital media conference of them all, CES, descends on the Las Vegas Strip. 110,000 are expected, 2500 exhibitors, 250 conference sessions, 800 speakers. The show floors run from Th 1/7- Su 1/10 but the action really gets started on Tu 1/5 with CES Unveiled and W 1/6 Press Day. Press outreach has been tremendous with the winner of the most inventive lure thus far going to Shuttle (PC) who mailed mysterious hard copy invites to their press event via this cinematic ARG-styled website. Needless to say it’s our first time covering CES, and we are very excited. In prep for CES, Digital Living Room will be celebrating connected devices at Sun Microsystems, Santa Clara next week with related Tech Supper Clubs in LA, SF, SV. On the content side, HRTS is lunching with the showrunners of Modern Family, Glee, Mad Men, How I Met Your Mother and Rescue Me at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. If you can’t make it live, try catching the stream. We really enjoyed covering their last one, Digital Chiefs. Below are the guides. Wishing you happy holidays!

TomTom Navigator 5 Software with Maps of North America for compatible PDAs with Bluetooth Review

Check Price Now!

I got TomTom Nav6 for my HTC P3300 GPS PPC phone. It already came with TomTom but not the maps so I bought US/Canda maps from Amazon. There are plenty of complaints, that are valid, but for the most part, I love this software. It just does what it says it does but not much more. Granted I would probably look for a dedicated unit if I was a real road warrior who used GPS all the time, but for me it’s just when I’m out of town and occasional use outside of that. When I need it, it turns on GPS, finds my address(s), and routes pretty quickly and just gets me there. However there are some issues.

No, it will not allow you to browse the maps without a GPS fix. But for me, I just use WLS or Google Maps when I just want quick or general directions.

No it doesn’t announce street names, but you have the option to show you the street names on the screen. Also, when it says, “you have reached your destination” it doesn’t tell you if it’s on the right or the left side of the street. That can be annoying but it hasn’t been a problem for me yet.

The issue with not being able to route from one region to the other is a valid problem too (have to do two routes or more), but I just bought the whole US and Canda maps to avoid this. You should do the same. There are regional maps for sections of the US which are good for just traveling extensively in that area (and they have more POI’s and details) but I feel it would be a waste of money to buy a map you couldn’t use for the whole US.

And the maps activation thing is annoying as well, but somewhat understandable. You have to keep a lock on software piracy some kind of way but I feel they could do a better job of it. I am somewhat ticked that I can’t use my software on my multiple devices – especially after I paid for them! I feel I should be able to use the software on all MY phones since I bought it! That’s the only real problem that I have with the software. I’m tempted to use a cracked version so I can use it on my other phone! I don’t promote piracy but I buy something, it’s MINE! And I hate protected music files too, that’s why I just buy the CD and rip it so I can use them the way I want. (Off Topic)

Anyway, there are a lot of good things about this software. The user interface is just simple and easy to use. The voices are accurate, clear and on time (they don’t announce after you’ve pasted the turn, ect). The display is simple and clear. The routing and rerouting is fast. On my maps, the POI’s are not abundant but sufficient. Entering addresses is made easy by giving you scrolling choices as you type. I don’t know what more you could want from a GPS software for a mobile device. It’s not perfect but it’s pretty darn good! I love it!

Navigator 5 w/dell axim – Daddy Data –
Works well with the Dell Axim and a Holux GR271 CF GPS receiver. Loaded all the US and Canada maps on a 2gb memory card. Installation went on uneventfully.

Noticed some issues with the maps in rural areas, think it is when traveling from map segment to map segment.

Otherwise, really pleased with the software.
Doesn’t work – Redcliff Ascent –
I have tried to get this software to work on my PALM E2 but it will not perform. Contacting PALM technical support is very time consuming and has not been successful so far.

I had recently purchased a TomTom ONE GPS Systems for my car. Here is my own opinion/review of this

I had recently purchased a TomTom ONE GPS Systems for my car. Here is my own opinion/review of this product. First off this system came with a 1GB memory stick for your applications and maps. The TomTom One GPS System was around $349 at Best Buy. I love this device because you can mount it in your vehicle as well as carry it around wherever you go. It usually connects to about 8 out of 12 satellites available. I have had this device for about a year now and it has only got me lost twice, but that might be because I’m always to lazy to update it. The other day my buddy was in my car, and he had the urge to try to hooked up his Bluetooth cell phone to my TomTom ONE GPS to see if it would give us weather, traffic reports, etc. It indeed gave us weather reports, but we could not get the traffic reports to work. It would come up with a green button in the top right hand corner but never notified us of anything else, so we weren’t sure if it was even working or not.

The TomTom ONE GPS also has a option for “Night Colors”, which is great in my opinion. I mean who wants a bright light glaring in the face from the GPS? Night mode changes all map colors to darker colors so you can still see them at night but they don’t blind you while you are trying to drive. I have noticed that the TomTom ONE GPS, has a option for TomTom Plus Services. I guess you can pay $15.00 a month or so and receive instant map updates as well as POI(Point of Interest) updates from this service. I personally am not in the car enough to pay for it, but some people may desire to have this.

In a nutshell, I think the TomTom ONE GPS Navigation System is well worth the money. I just recently moved to Florida and have no clue where I am going. The TomTom saves me from having to ask people where to go or to get on Google Maps everytime I want to get somewhere.

For the folks that may be buying a dash mount in California to stay lawful, the law has changed effective January 1, 2009:

“Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law a bill allowing drivers to take advantage of technology intended to help with navigation. It takes effect Jan. 1, 2009.

State law now (2008) prohibits anyone from driving with objects or materials placed, displayed, installed, affixed or applied upon windshields. Exceptions are made for such items as rearview mirrors, toll road transponders and small stickers.

The new law, previously SB1567, allows global positioning system devices to be affixed to vehicle windshields in specific locations.

Portable GPS devices will be permitted to be mounted “in the seven-inch square in the lower corner farthest removed from the driver.” They also could be installed “in the five-inch square in the lower corner nearest the driver…”

FRICTION MOUNT BASE – Robert W. Willard –
Excellent product and does a great job. Have not had it “slip or slide” at all. Fantastic product and sure beats puting your GPS on the windshield, and leaving a mark on the windshield to tell felons that you have a GPS stashed away in the car.

I highly recommend this product to all.
Not a good product – Nitesh Kumar – MN , USA
it does not hold my GPS in place. My GPs kept coming out of the base. Finally i had to glue my GPS with the base .

And then, there’s this to give you an extra nightmare after you wake up in a cold sweat from the first clowns-are-chasing-me scream dream.

While I’m at it, I’ll throw in the freaky new ad for Garmin that has officially turned me into a fan of the TomTom GPS navigational systems.
