Atm I’m trying to show the mind blowing awesomeness of hip hop. This genre is hated on because of wackass rappers but Hip- Hop is still dope. Check this out:

Tonedeff

- hook by Jason Mraz

Verse:1
Sometimes I hate everyone and everything – to the world itself/
Even though I’m the portrait of health and been blessed with many things/
Cause when it seems life’s beginning to take a splendid lead/
Suddenly, everything tends to lean negatively/
I used to feel my luck was bled from me at seventeen/
Because ever since positive outcomes have been seldom seen/
They tell me that bouts with doubt can self-fulfill prophetically/
And that’s prolly why John & Paul said that it’s best to let it be/
And I use to be the cat with plenty kinetic energy/
Happy go lucky, Mr. Follow-Your-Dream-And-Set-It-Free/
But over the years, son, I’ve been jaded to the Nth degree/
I hate it, cause my sense of grief is blatant and my friends agree/
See, people’s selfish deeds lead to my bleak expectancy
(Like) If I catch the E, I never expect to see an empty seat/
(Nice) But in typical fashion, this’ll pass until my next defeat/
Until I’m stressing deep and forced to beg and plea – till then we’ll sing.

Chorus:
Life is wonderful.
Life goes full circle.
Life is wondeful.

Verse:2
They say I’m a natural born pessamist – and that’s fuckin wild/
Must’ve come with my mother’s smile and father’s bullheadedness/
I pull ahead and get pulled back, but I keep struggling/
Son, I feel like I couldn’t catch a break beat juggling/
Still I reach upward and on, and proceed trudging along/
As I lead these brothers in arms, to achieve what’s in our hearts/
But the scene’s shrugging us off, so…
I just remember that every dream comes with a scar when I see something I want/
When it seems nothing is wrong, well – I gotta keep telling myself to stop/
Waiting for the other foot to drop/
Live in the moment, sit on the throne and just take a look from the top/
It’s a whole other perspective to see the good that you got/
Now, if it’s an omen, quit with the moaning! Don’t let it push you to flop/
That’s like being spooked at the doc since you was a baby, still shook from the shot/
Don’t imagine a tragic end to the book, when there’s not/
You gotta try to rewrite inspite of how crooked the plot.

Verse:3
Now, when you go this long uphill, you lose the will to climb it/
So, I wrote this song to remind me of the silver lining/
In a world this wrong, gotta carry a sword that’s strong/
And slice ‘em all with smiles, y’all – I fight ‘em as I kill with kindness/
Nobody wants a Bitter Benny or a Debbie Downer/
Or a Sad Sam that be wrapping a wet blanket around them/
Keep a sunny disposition – Breathe Out/
Cause life has a way of stripping the paint off of your dream house. It’s simple./
Indeed these things seem to be easy to see/
But they easily flee your mind as you find repeated deceit/
Now, there’s reasons the weak of will never dream or believe/
Before they leap, they concede to defeat and agree to retreat/
Now, when fatigue has really got you by the balls/
Remember that if you really didn’t believe you’d succeed, then you wouldn’t have tried at all/
So, jump regardless of the consequence/
Cause even on the night of the apocalypse, everybody’s an optimist.

Bridge
No matter how hard it seems.
There’s always someone in another position.

So, when it rains, just hold on.
When it’s gray, just hold on.
When there’s pain, just hold on.
When it rains.

And when it rains, think dry skies.
When it’s gray, think bright lights.
When there’s pain, just smile, smile.
When it rains.

Verse:4
I know it seems everyday is a struggle to keep yourself outta trouble/
This modern jungle is jumbled with muddled puzzles to stump you/
And snipers gunning to stumble you, like you’ve been hunted/
Dude, how the hell are you telling us ‘Life is wonderful’?/
Some of you have come to conclusions/assumptions, But nothing as true or stunning/
That misery becomes something that’s comfortable/
Trumping the will to shun it. Run from it if you’re stuck in a rut or two/
So, I figured I’d drum up something I could hum to you.
(Like this).

Their style is unique, they use smooth flowing lyrical verses to produce jam after jam. Sampling all types of music the beats kno produces are always great listens. The original duo consisted of members Kno and Deacon The Villain, and the group is now complete with the addition of emcee Natti. Kno and Deacon are also both great producers as well and who are currently working with artists such as Immortal Technique and Devin The Dude. This video is their single “Never Came Down (The Brownie Song)” from their upcoming album entitled “Strange Journey Volume One”. A great beat combined with a real catchy chorus and a nice reference to a great comedian by the name of Katt Williams, this song focuses on a great subject matter……..brownies……………among other things. The CD, which as stated by Cunnin is more of a mixtape with skits, remixes, and singles from other QN5 artists. It features artists such as Killer Mike, Tonedeff, and Slug from Atmosphere, and is real good. The album is already available for purchase on iTunes, and will be in stores June 30th. The group has put out four albums already (Will Rap For Food (2001), SouthernUnderground (2003), A Piece of Strange (2006), Dirty Acres (2007)) All four albums are very good, however “A Piece of Strange” is my personal favorite. Here is a link to their Myspace page where you can preview the album: CunninLynguists

From the QN5 website:

The QN5 MEGASHOW is an annual destination event thrown exclusively by NYC’s independent hip hop label, QN5 Music, for the their fans. It is the only time the entire label’s roster converges on the same stage on the same night. QN5 fans (ie. Blue Schoolers) from all over the world make their pilgrimage to this event to celebrate all things baby blue and see one of the most energetic and entertaining shows in Hip Hop.
In my study of all things Hip-Hop this year, especially in regards to hypermasculinity and an inability to show any vulnerability at all in Rap music, it’s always a pleasant surprise to see dudes who are hella nice on the mic, and simultaneously able to wear their hearts on their sleeves (a la ‘Pac Shakur).

This is my theory for the song “My Lady” in context to what the Chico and the Man album from Kno and Tonedeff is about.

See on the flip side…

going on the whole batista and cuban revolution concept which was brought up in the other threads

the lady that tone is talking about in the first verse could be cuba. it was his home until he left. he would be looking back

So regal, beautiful
Too bad I’ll never see the funeral
And even through the doom and gloom
As soon as the moon can be viewed in full
I saw a star in the heavens
I knew it was you, my anxiety is through the roof
Can’t deny the irrefutable truth
That I’m alive in lieu of you
And in the silence of your tomb I hear your cries as you’re consumed
Your spirit ride illumin’ under the twenty thousand hues of blue
(Fade out.. [breath] zoom in)
I felt your heart as I grew in your womb
The constant bass is soothe in tune
I drew from you like still lights but still born with room to move

I used the pursuit of my roots, I would later be groomed to lose

could be talking about where he came from

Last June I tattooed this date and numerals under my chin
The last place ever touched by your skin

June is when he left cuba for America, the date could also relate to the cuban revolution

(Cause/Guess?) somethin’ within me loves to pretend that you’re my mother again
Though I barely remember you tucking me in

he barely remembers when he lived there, or his past

But as dawn advances, I bid you adieu
My..

he is leaving for America

My lady
(I know you can still hear.
Heh heh.. You’d be proud, huh?
I’ve done a lot.
I met this beautiful, beautiful woman.
She reminds me of you.)

the beautiful women he meets is America

So radiant, vibrant
Hazel tint in her eyes and the way that her skin shines is
Like a phoenix risin’, even I could be surprised if we entwine

before the founding fathers decided on the eagle as the symbol of America, the phoenix was considered

I feel the climate reach its highest peaks when she’s beside me
But we’ve got deeper ties than physical needs, desires
Typically we aspire to dream and climb the steepest heights that we can find
And better, redefine the cheapened (lines/lives?) we seek and find
And there’s a reason to bond together
Though sometimes I tell some teeny lies to feed her pride and sleep between her thighs
My peace of mind is reached if I can keep a smile on
If the seas are wild then she’s an island
Complete with whitened beach to greet the tide in
Or retreat to hidin’ where you can flee to dryness
A peaceful night beneath the skies so we can speak in private
On the water for an easy ride, nobody’s speaking either
She reminds me of you in some ways, it’s like they redesigned her
Flingin’ rocks off the eastern side to watch ‘em sink in silence
I take a need for Her Highness, her mere presence a gift to me
I kiss a ring of diamonds, take pride in the queen my bride is
Her Amphitrite to my King Poseidon
And she’s decided in her sneaky slyness she’d conceive a titan
And I’m uneasy, I can feel the heightened fear inside
As tears arrive her fingers guide to me to this breathing child that’s lyin’ beneath her nightie
She don’t have the slightest idea what tonight is
I hear the singin’ sirens
I bid her adieu as she and I collide as my..

I don’t really need any more convincing to be a bigger fan of The Live Lounge, but Radio One and their guests just keep churning out more outstanding tracks. The Fray’s cover of Kanye West’s Heartless being one of them.

Kaye West appears to be a popular choice to cover too. Soon to be super group, White Lies have recorded their version of the awesome track Love Lockdown, Tonedeff created an alternative version, Kanye himself has reinvented it with the help of R.Kelly and Tiesto ruined, sorry, remixed it. If that’s not enough, there’s also a mash-up version of Radiohead’s Reckoner, (a big favourite of mine) called Reckoner Lockdown of which, the last minute or so is by far the best bit.

Luckily for me, Radio One normally include just about all of their Live Lounge sessions on their CD releases. And, if the third version is anything to go by, I can’t wait for the next. For the moment, with so many covers and mixes, it’s only fair I should leave you with the really rather brilliant and original Love Lockdown. Watch out for the cool, couldn’t be more ‘on trend’ neon body paint too…

Love ain’t the basis for action
In a nation of addicts pacing and waiting for seconds of satisfaction
Where the word itself is only fashioned in fits of passion
Hand in hand with animalistic orgasmic reaction
and the past isn’t felt as a match made in hell
But rather its held as a latter day meld
Of common mistakes and nice intentions
But when false love retention is simply vice invention
Its only right to mention the fights you get in
Nightly visions of these Tina and Ike revisions
So Whats Love really Got To Do With It?
From prude women to stool pidgeons in soup kitchens
The truth isn’t as eloquent so be intelligent
Getting caught out of your element just for the hell of it’s irrelevant
And that word’ll fit like a glove if you don’t get right
Now live your life for the love or stop

Tonedeff’s flow is the shit. Period.

Still waiting to blame it on the al al al al al alcohol (how women can take an extra 30 minutes to get ready… after they are already ready is beyond me). Atleast the QN5 folk can keep me entertained. Check the clip above as Tonedeff & PackFM take time out from recording vocals for PackFM’s upcoming album with Domingo, I Fucking Hate Rappers, to discuss the brand new Pro Tools plug-in.

Cause I don’t wanna stop feeling you top of me/
Sitting across my cheeks, devouring the very spot that keeps
My force hungry for you, like I was an ‘aqua teen’/

Man, it’s been far too long since I’ve heard some new music from Tonedeff. If you aren’t aware of this dude, you are in desperate need of a lesson (thinks of new idea for later). Here is what Tone describes as Just a lil’ somethin somethin’ [he] did for kicks. It’s not so much a remix as it is a re imagining of the concept. Brooklyn Zu’s Chew Fu came through with a House remix as well. Hit the jump for the lyrics…

V1 (Sung)
You are the warden, though you say you’re not – I say you are/
You got me numbering my days in solitary
But you don’t know what I’ve been plotting for you
Once I chip my way beyond your prison walls

I used to have a soul until you snatched it all
You are the warden of my heart.
You’ll be the last to know that you don’t have control.
You are the warden of my heart.

You used to tell me I was someone you could trust with love
But nowadays, you barely trust me to one phone call/
Hey! Girl, you leave me cuffed to the walls/
And leave with the front door open

Hook
Give me the blue sky. Give me the sunlight.
Give me your loving, baby
Give me the key to let me go – Oh let me go.
You are the warden of my heart.

V2
Another night another, another lonesome day/
I keep on calling but you won’t come, (hey hey hey)/
Though you’re only inches away/
Where’s your mind go?

This ain’t no shawshank baby
There’s no redemption baby
I’m simply guilty, no parole in your system for me/
But I don’t wanna say a word, we know to be true
Cause I’ve already lied to serve my sentence for you/

It’s so illogical, (yeah)
We barely talk at all (yeah)
It’s strictly conjugal (yeah)
Our hearts are cold and thoughts have gone astray
I can’t stay, Not this way.

Hook
Give me the blue sky. Give me the sunlight.
Give me your loving, baby
Give me the key to let me go – Let me go.
You are the warden of my heart.

V1 (Rhyme)
Now, you’ve got a lock and key/
Sometimes it seems you’ve got it out for me/
Cause no matter what anyone says, surely I can see/
Mama, you run a lopsided democracy/
How in the hell Am I possibly thought to be shocked
when we got different philosophies
it’s hard to meet in the middle, when you belittle the issues we live through
and If I don’t agree you stomp your feet/
I wish that there was a way that I could bill you for my loss of sleep
cause I ain’t counted a fucking flock in weeks/
Ironically, you pulled the wool over my eyes/
Surprise! You ain’t he lady I thought you’d be
Props for being deceptive, But I think I’ma need an intervention
Cause I don’t wanna stop feeling you top of me/
sitting across my cheeks, devouring the very spot that keeps
my force hungry for you, like I was an ‘aqua teen’/
Now, rock with me, master your shake/
Plans to escape are being botched as we speak
Tired of comparing apples and oranges, cause the fact is we’re always just
avoiding having to harvest honesty/
When there’s lots of grief that we cause to eachother
We gotta stop the bleeding or you can watch me leave
And break! Cause whether you like it or not, I’ll be damned if I let this loss repeat/
And there’s plenty of other sharks in the sea.

Everything swooped from the official QN5 blog, who also supplied a .zip file of everything.
