Uno de los alter egos de Tara traiciona a Marshall de tal manera que puede destruir a la familia completa.

Cuando uno era jovenzano estaba de moda la música de un fulano con bombachos y gafas que con una canción llamada U can’t touch this copaba las listas de éxitos del mercachifleo musical. Como es obvio, aclamado como precursor del rap y el hip-hop, el tipo en cuestión fue olvidado como siempre en estos casos justo al cuarto de hora de su éxito. Perplejo se quedó quien escribe cuando, todavía de joven y para más inri, en una de las millonésimas reposiciones de El equipo A que emitía (y sigue emitiendo) cierto canal televisivo español con cierta inclinación a lo cutre, descubrió este tema del ya fallecido (pero no creemos que por eso) Rick James, Super Freak, todo un homenaje a sí mismo (mucho ojito, que aunque el meloncio éste gaste semejante pinta en la foto, en sus inicios compartió grupo con todo un Neil Young), en un capítulo que contaba con el intérprete en un pequeño papel. Luego resultó evidente que M. C. Hammer había destrozado la (ya de por sí triste) canción de James para “rapear” (en esa asquerosa moda consistente en tomar una melodía de éxito y devaluarla poniéndole chumba chumbas varios, costumbre convertida en habitual ya y a la que se ha consagrado lo más vomitivo del espectro musical mundial, empezando por ese engendro llamado Madonna), despojándola, eso sí, de la guasa con que se la tomaba el autor original.

Avispados, los responsables de Pequeña Miss Sunshine, esa joya de la comedia dramática dirigida por Jonathan Dayton y Valerie Faris en 2006 recuperaron la versión original para la escena final, el número musical de la pequeña Olive (Abigail Breslin) en el certamen de belleza infantil con cuyo despliegue coreográfico ensayado durante horas en compañía de su abuelo, habitual de los bares de strip-tease, la niña escandaliza a la concurrencia y defeca virtualmente sobre semejante bochorno de concurso (lo cual es extensible a los de la misma especie protagonizados por mayores de edad).

Technically, I shouldn’t include this trainwreck of a movie because I didn’t finish it. I couldn’t. I couldn’t take anymore bad acting or Cameron Diaz . What a horrible movie.

Basically, it’s about plain and simple Rose (Toni Collette), whose sister (played by Ditzy Diaz) is a party girl who can’t get her shit straight…at all, and moves in with her and it gets really old, really fast. I mean, come on, Ditzy Diaz’s character gets the car towed and she’s standing alone on the street and two guys approach her and offer her a ride! Any woman with the basic smidge of common sense would say no and leave…but she accepts! of course, they try to do bad things…didn’t see that coming did you? I was kind of hoping they’d just kill her and save the movie, but no.

I stopped it not long after..I got tired of seeing Ditzy Diaz prancing about in her underwear and bra. Lame. Apparently, the grandmother comes and saves the day or something but I couldn’t tell you.

Worth watching? NO.

Mary and Max | Adam Elliot, 2009

Stop motion animation is one of those long-standing facets of film history that, thanks to a handful of important people, will never be lost to the winds of change. The concept itself seems utterly oblivious to the march of technology and computer-generated graphics, seeming only to benefit from these advancements rather than finding itself buried beneath them. Of course, without the likes of Henry Selick, Nick Park, Tim Burton, and all of those who precede them, things could be very different. As it is, we have these artists to thank for inspiring the likes of Adam Elliot – an Australian animator whose work with clay on the 2003 short film Harvey Krumpet won him and Academy Award and who returns here with his first full-length claymation feature, Mary and Max. Thanks largely to the international exploits of messrs Burton and Park, not to mention a relatively successful festival run and the involvement of two big names in Philip Seymour Hoffman and Toni Collette, Elliot’s new film is now poised to take on America. Critics around the world already appear fond of the film, and at this point it seems increasingly likely that we will see it lining up alongside the likes of Up and perhaps Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo in the Kodak Theatre when award season finally arrives – three different breeds of animation, if you will. Mary and Max follows the lives of two people: a young Australian girl whose eccentric parents and odd appearance make her the subject of school bullying, and an obese, jewish New Yorker who enjoys collecting cigarette butts from the city streets and devouring chocolate hot dogs. Both have one thing in common – a lack of friends.

Rather than tell a story in the traditional sense or “weave a fable” as films of this kind normally do, Mary and Max merely gives an account of these two rather unimportant lives. This is done through Barry Humpries (also known as Dame Edna) who provides the brilliant narration here and whose reflective, classic British/American tone lends the film much of its charm. As for the aesthetic, Mary and Max certainly doesn’t break the mould when it comes to creating a new and exciting world using the stop motion technique in the way Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas did. In fact, with its oddly misshapen gothic look and exaggerated way of capturing realism, Elliot’s film owes quite a bit to this earlier work. Other than existing as an ode to the importance of friends, Mary and Max isn’t particularly concerned with teaching us anything at all, or indeed offering a traditional narrative that involves innocence, discovery, wonder; the alternate realities found in the likes of The Nightmare Before Christmas or Henry Selick’s Coraline. The story itself, that of two people who find solace in each other’s long-distance companionship, is wonderfully written, particularly the parts involving letters sent from Mary to Max and visa versa: every word carries weight. Part of the reason for this is the voice work  behind the film. Toni Collette and Eric Bana do well enough with their handful of lines but, as usual, it is Philip Seymour Hoffman who shines: his portrayal of Max is particularly excellent – despite a New York drawl that at times seems a little forced – so that by the end of the movie his voice and Elliot’s character are very much one and the same.

Ah!! En ce jour d’Halloween, j’ai envie de vous parler de mon film préféré d’Halloween, Shaun of the Dead, ce qui me pousse à vous parler tout naturellement de mes films étrangers préférés, dans la suite de ma liste Zip que j’ai abandonnée depuis longtemps! En plus, mon chum se déguise en Shaun cette année!

1- Shaun of the Dead

Évidemment, vous aurez reconnu dans le titre une parodie du titre du classique Dawn of the Dead, de Romero, qui a fait l’objet il y a quelques années d’un remake que j’ai trouvé très bon aussi. La scène dans l’ascenseur où on entend en arrière-plan sonore “Down with the sickness” repreise par Richard Cheese est un chef-d’oeuvre. Bref! Shaun of the Dead a été produit et lancé à peu près en même temps que ce remake. Il s’agit d’une comédie (eh oui, encore) britannique, où on défonce les zombies à coups de batte de cricket et de 45 tours, au son d’une musique de Queen. Moi qui suis d’un naturel chicken, je peux garantir que ce n’est pas un film épeurant, mais très drôle. En fait, ce qui est brillant dans ce film, c’est qu’il nous montre à quel point nous sommes naturellement près d’être nous-mêmes des zombies dans notre vie courante. Ça leur prend vraiment du temps avant de constater que les autres ont un peu changé… L’interprétation de Simon Pegg et de son comparse Nick Frost a fait école. Ça rafraîchit un peu le genre qui tourne en rond parfois!

2- Muriel’s Wedding

Dans un tout autre registre, maintenant, nous partons en Australie avec une Toni Collette en début de carrière, qui partage la vedette avec Rachel Griffiths, future Brenda de Six Feet Under. Muriel’s Wedding aurait pu être une comédie romantique banale: une jeune fille très ordinaire, un peu moche, méprisée par sa famille, rêve de se marier. Pas de trouver l’amour, non; de se marier. Point. Et elle réussit… à quel prix? Mais même si on s’attache à Muriel, à son rêve de devenir une autre, de quitter son milieu, tout en la trouvant un peu nounoune, le film a un petit goût doux-amer. Sans se vouloir une critique ou un manifeste féministe, il réussit très bien à avoir un propos intelligent sous des dehors légers et divertissants. Bref, un bon film de filles à regarder entre amies, qui pourra ouvrir des discussions! En prime: une héroïne qui n’est pas super mince et qui est quand même regardable! Yes!

Mon amie Sarah et moi, on avait l’habitude de mettre ce film les samedis soirs en fin de soirée quand on fermait le vidéo… pour se faire aller au son de la musique d’Abba. Quant à moi, les chansons d’Abba sont bien mieux mises en valeur dans ce film que dans la comédie discutable qui est sortie l’an passée, Mamma Mia. (Mais bon, faut aimer le genre!)

3- Memories of Matsuko

Complètement différent des 2 autres, le film japonais Memories of Matsuko a fait un triomphe au festival Fantasia il y a quelques années, et pour cause. Comparé au Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain en raison de ses moments de fantaisie et de sa mise en scène très recherchée, haute en couleurs, de ses images magnifiques, Memories of Matsuko est un film qui nous fait autant rire, et davantage pleurer qu’Amélie. Il raconte l’histoire, en flash-backs, de Matsuko, une femme maintenant vieille qui a vécu une vie très difficile et fort mouvementée. De numéros musicaux au montage saccadé aux scènes silencieuses et contemplatives, le réalisateur Tetsuya Nakashima, qui nous avait déjà donné l’excellent et étourdissant Kamikaze Girls, a signé ici une oeuvre très touchante, qui tente de définir l’irréconciliable qu’il y a en chacun de nous, l’enfant qu’on a été, l’adulte que nous sommes, etc. Nous sommes tous, à notre façon, un vieillard isolé de la société, perdu au milieu de ses souvenirs.

Il est à noter que je ne pense pas que le film ait été distribué sur DVD en Amérique du Nord, mais je pense qu’il est très facile à trouver sur Internet.

4- Amarcord

La grande fan de Fellini que je suis lui reconnais de nombreux chefs-d’oeuvre, mais Amarcord demeure mon favori. Le titre veut dire à peu près: “Je me rappelle” en italien, n’est pas si éloigné du film dont je viens de parler. Fellini se base sur ses souvenirs d’enfance pour reconstituer un petit village au bord de la mer, où l’événement de l’année sera le passage d’un gros paquebot de riches. De jeunes garçons vont faire au cours de cette année l’expérience de la vie, les cigarettes, l’argent, les femmes, et tout le bataclan. La mer, une véritable obsession de Fellini, vient encore une fois y jouer le miroir aux illusions, le berceau d’origine, et la plage, l’espace du rêve où tout se conclut. Il s’agit d’un film très personnel du réalisateur qui, bien qu’il se tienne toujours près de ses personnages, donne souvent dans le grandiose, le grandiloquent, la mise en scène, le cirque, etc.

I committed to not rating any of the films I saw at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, electing instead to simply watch the films and take in their merits over their faults. I made this decision in order to get at the heart of what the festival is trying to achieve, which is a showcase of extraordinary, unique talent from around the world. All of the work I have seen looks incredibly painstaking. One doesn’t animate a film as simply as one points a camera and shoots. These filmmakers have put outstanding efforts into what they are attempting to accomplish, part of which is to convince others that their stories can be told no other way.

I will return to review Adam Elliot’s “Mary and Max”, for I believe it to be one of the greatest films of the year – not only the best of the animated films I’ve seen, which it is, but of most live action projects. I watched parts of the film with tears in my eyes, in wonder at how Elliot was able to tell such a heartfelt tale about two misfits and portray them more convincingly with claymation than some directors have been able to portray most living persons. These are characters with enormous depth and detail and a sadness that could only accompany 20 years of feeling excluded by the world (and in Max’s case, much longer).

For now, a brief synopsis: We are introduced to 10-year-old Mary Daisy Dinkle (Bethany Whitmore and Toni Collette), who lives in Australia in the 1970’s. We know it’s Australia, because it’s mostly brown. A narrator (Barry Humphries) describes her eyes as the colour of mud puddles and points out the rather obvious birthmark in the middle of her forehead, which is, unfortunately, the colour of poo. Mary’s mother Vera is an alcoholic vamp whose recipes all include cigarette ash. Her father works in a tea bag factory, attaching the little strings (it has to be done somehow).

Mary doesn’t entirely believe her grandfather when he tells her that babies come from the bottom of a father’s beer glass. One day in the post office, Mary chooses a name at random from an international directory and makes plans to send that person a letter in order to ask him where babies really come from. The name belongs to Max Jerry Horowitz (voiced nearly unrecognizably by Philip Seymour Hoffman), a 44-year-old Jewish atheist suffering from obesity and, as we gradually come to understand, Asperger syndrome.

Max lives in New York, and we know it’s New York because it’s in black and white (Woody Allen would be proud). He doesn’t like to go out much. Neither Mary nor Max have many friends in their real lives, but they form a bond through the letters they send. It is a relationship that lasts a long time and has a profound effect on both lives. Elliot tells his story, which he mentions is based in real life, almost exclusively through either his narrator or the characters as they read their letters.

Elliot’s script is brilliant, filling in what makes his characters tick with extremely fine details. Both travel to very dark places in their attempts to get along in the world in spite of their isolation from it. The ending for Mary and Max is bittersweet, but beautifully poignant in the conclusions it makes about what brings people together, and why that need exists for all of us.

It seems like Australia’s year for the market on animated features, as Tatia Rosenthal’s “$9.99″ also ran at the festival. Its claymation action tells the story of an apartment inhabited by several characters with ongoing relationship and money problems. As the film opens, a portly man exits a coffee shop with his beverage as a homeless man asks for a cigarette. The scene progresses with a moral debate and escalates to a gunshot, setting the tone for the film as a whole.

The man is Jim Peck (Anthony LaPaglia). His sons are Lenny (Ben Mendelsohn), who works as a repo man, and Dave (Samuel Johnson), who can’t keep a job because he’s too nice. Something unidentifiable has taken the fun out of Jim’s life. His wife has left and his sons aren’t living up to his expectations. Lenny seems to have his own particular world figured out. He meets a supermodel (Leeanna Walsman) who likes her men a little too smooth. Dave spots an ad in a magazine for a book entitled “The Meaning of Life”. He can’t believe his luck that it’s only $9.99.

Other people in the complex are looking for a little meaning. Albert (Barry Otto) is a pleasant elderly man of faith who hasn’t traveled much since his wife passed. An angel (Geoffrey Rush) shows up at his door, but he looks an awful lot like that homeless man who shot himself. Zack (Jamie Katsamatsas) is a young boy who has his heart set on a soccer-playing action figure, but he starts taking a shine to his piggy bank instead. Ron (Joel Edgerton) is reconnecting with his college boy image of himself after his wife Michelle (Claudia Karvan) moves out.

The film contains several humourously surreal moments that only animation can achieve. The rest of the time, Rosenthal draws us in with the realism of her characters and their neighbourhood. “$9.99″ plays religiously like an indie ensemble film in which the characters are all connected first and foremost by thematic ideas – in this case, the meaning of life and the worthlessness of money. Nobody wants to hear poor Dave talk about the discoveries he’s made, probably because they don’t want to hear that they’ve been doing this whole life thing all wrong.

“$9.99″ was the last of my six-pack. The results of the voting should be revealed as I type these words. The past few days have been an eye-opening experience, one that drove home the possibilities of animation to tell stories in wholly unique and interesting ways. Before the festival, I had been struck by how a film like Pixar’s “Up”, which has garnered a significantly larger following that most of the films competing at OIAF, had the capacity to deal with more adult themes while it told a story that kids could enjoy at the same time. I believe now more than ever that animation is not just kids’ stuff. More importantly, it’s some of the best work I’ve seen in a theatre all year.

Dimanche soir, pendant que certains noyaient au Grand Palais leurs frustrations de ne pas avoir assisté à la tournée londonienne de cette petite nature de Michael Jackson, d’autres, peu nombreux, allaient clore leur premier week-end hivernal (l’hiver dure 9 mois à Paris) au cinéma devant le long-métrage d’animation Mary et Max, de l’Australien Adam Elliot. Je suis fier de dire que je faisais partie de cette poignée de privilégiés (ceux qui étaient au cinéma, pas ceux qui couinaient devant le gnome de Minneapolis).

Comment vous donner envie de vous ruer dans la salle la plus proche, voir ce chef-d’oeuvre? Peut-être en vous faisant la promesse d’un spectacle qui s’assume à la fois comme une démarche pleinement artisanale (l’animation “à l’ancienne” est conçue à partir de figurines en pâte à modeler dont les mouvements sont photographiés image par image) et comme un univers formel totalement inédit; je dois dire que jamais des personnages en pâte à modeler ne m’ont ému de la sorte.

Je sais qu’avant cela, il y eu The Nightmare before Christmas (tout de même produit et distribué par Disney) et les différentes transpositions des aventures de Wallace et Gromit au cinéma, mais ces productions étaient tout autant destinées au jeune spectateur adulte que j’étais, qu’au morveux bruyant assis sur le siège voisin de la salle obscure. C’est pour cette raison, que je n’ai jamais pu être pleinement conquis par ces films pourtant inoubliables.

Devant Mary et Max, nulle marmaille, nulle odeur de bonbons industriels, juste une poignée d’adultes vivant dans une métropole grise et froide, et venus trouver un peu de chaleur devant cette histoire dont le cahier des charges n’implique pas de leur raconter que la vie est forcément aussi colorée que merveilleuse.

Je ne nie pas le besoin que nous avons de nous laisser bercer par l’optimisme des contes de fées qui finissent invariablement de la même manière. Ces histoires nous sont même vitales, tout au long  de la construction de notre personnalité, du moins si j’en crois les écrits de M. Bettelheim. Mais une fois arrivés à l’âge adulte, je pense que nous avons besoin que les artistes (à la différence des politiques, religieux et autres commerciaux en téléphonie mobile) ne nous mentent pas: la vie, même si elle recèle toujours de la beauté, est souvent une histoire cruelle qui finit mal. C’est, à mon sens, pour ces raisons que la tragédie fut inventée. Celle-ci est le véhicule qui permet de raconter des histoires dans lesquelles les personnages ont un idéal de vie, mais ne peuvent jamais atteindre cet idéal, car ils portent en eux les germes de leur propre disgrâce.

A cet égard, Mary Dinkle et Max Horowitz sont deux personnages tragiques que le destin va lier à jamais. L’histoire commence au milieu des années 70 dans une petite ville de la cambrousse australienne.

Mary est une petite fille pas très jolie qui mène une existence solitaire entre un père autiste et une mère alcoolique. Dans la cour d’école, elle passe ses récréations seule et ne trouve de réconfort que devant sa série télévisée préférée The Noblets, en se goinfrant de lait concentré sucré. Un jour, Mary fait l’acquisition d’un annuaire new yorkais recelant des millions de noms qui sont autant de promesses d’exotisme: Finkelstein, Weinberg, Horowitz… Elle décide alors d’envoyer une lettre à l’un de ces mystérieux yankees en espérant, avec un peu de chance, trouver enfin un ami.

Max est un célibataire obèse de 44 ans. Il vit reclus dans son petit appartement de Brooklyn et passe ses journées à s’empiffrer de hot-dogs au chocolat devant son émission favorite, The Noblets. Max est pleinement lucide quant à sa misère affective et se laisse, jour après jour, ronger par un mal terrible: la maladie d’Asperger, contre laquelle les psychiatres de la Grande Pomme ne peuvent rien. Un jour, il reçoit une étrange lettre postée par une fillette nommée Mary depuis la très lointaine Australie; d’abord terrorisé par l’intrusion de cette petite étrangère dans son existence réglée comme du papier à musique, Max va finalement prendre son courage à deux mains et répondre à Mary. C’est alors le début d’une amitié épistolaire qui s’étendra sur plus de vingt ans.

Mary et Max sont les deux laissés-pour-compte de cette société post-moderne qui était censée apporter bonheur et abondance à tout le monde. Ce couple improbable rappelle, par bien des aspects, ces duos d’acteurs venus du cinéma américain à la fin des années 60 et dans la décennie qui a suivi: ces personnages de paumés immortalisés par Dustin Hoffman et Jon Voight dans Midnight Cowboy, Pacino et Hackman dans Scarecrow ou encore Ruth Gordon et Bud Cort dans le mythique Harold and Maude. Autant de personnages que le cinéma ne nous montrait pas avant cette période et qui ont donné à la “marge” son visage cinématographique.

La malédiction de Mary et Max, c’est qu’ils sont incapables de mentir et à plus forte raison, de se mentir. De l’aveu même de Max, celui-ci se juge irrémédiablement “littéral” et “logique”; il n’est pas pourvu de la carapace cynique qui lui permettrait de faire son trou dans une société qui voit le littéralisme comme le symptôme le plus évident de la bêtise humaine. Ce film, profondément humaniste, est donc un formidable plaidoyer en faveur de l’authenticité et du refus de se conformer à l’esprit du temps.

A toutes ces raisons, j’ajouterai la présence lumineuse de Philip Seymour Hoffman et de Toni Collette, qui ont donné leurs voix à Max et Mary et qui réussissent à nous rendre ces figurines Playschool aussi émouvantes que les personnages de chair et de sang qu’ils ont interprétés précédemment.

Ce film est un petit miracle. Alors, même s’il est produit par le problématique Mel Gibson, courez-y!

i didn’t take my movie revooze notebook to this because i thought it was gonna be this sweet little kid’s movie and not at all what we serve on tap at the Bar None.

i was wrong.

Mary and Max was beautifully tragic, tragically dark, darkly beautiful, beautifully sad, sadly gorgeous and gorgeously ugly.

The story was simple yet moving and i even guy cried a few tears at the end. The look of the movie was as somber as the story but there was so much humanity in everything that touches the tale that we the viewer cannot help but be touched as well.

From a technical point of view, the clay-mation approaches perfection. Not surprising when you learn the guy who made this, Adam Elliot, spent five years pulling it all together. Jesus, i’m not sure there’s anything in my life worth five years’ time, other than friendships and family and romance and that kind of crap. i just mean, i’m not sure i can imagine a project where, after five years, i could stand back and say, “Yeah, i’m glad i took all that freakin’  the time to do that.”

A special  mention before i move on, to Philip Seymour Hoffman who does Max’s voice. You won’t even recognize it’s him, swear to god. If there’s an award for animated voice stylings, he should win. If there isn’t such an award they should invent one just so PSH can win it for this M&M.

Oh, btw, this isn’t a movie i’d take my 12-year-old to. It’s just a little too dark.

It’s clay-mation, people. The only sex scene in the history of 2D/3D animation that counts is the one in Team America: World Police (and if you haven’t seen that scene you need to go out and rent it tonight).

Yeah, i know, right?!

This came as a huge surprise to me too. i was all settled into my little seat thinking there was no chance of any drink references at all when, imagine my surprise, inside the first five minutes i get:

• A father who drinks Bailey’s and stuffs dead birds
• A mother who’s “wobbly” from constantly testing the cooking sherry, which she describes to her daughter as “tea for adults”.
• A little girl who believes babies come from the bottom of beer mugs.

After that, when the little girl grows up, she gets hooked on sherry as well. She buys it by the box and eventually stands on a coffee table, puts a noose around her neck, and swallows a handful of Valium.

Interestingly enough, the clay actors in this movie do a much better job of acting drunk than 99% of the ‘real’ actors out there.

Point being, alcohol and alcoholism were a very prevalent undercurrent in the movie.

Tonight I fell in love. It’s the middle of the night, my fever is driving me nuts and my head is pounding, so I turned on HBO. I had no idea what I was watching because it was already a few minutes in, but I started halfheartedly paying attention. Almost immediately I’m wide awake and completely engaged.

This movie has perhaps replaced some of my all-time favorites. It’s sort of a coming of age story but much more…it reminded me of CRASH in a way. The writing is stellar, the acting is outstanding and I thought the editing was clever. I’m a gusher by nature but this time I mean it – this movie blew me away. It deals with race, hypocrisy, sex, desire, love, parenting – what real love means. I like that all the characters, despite sometimes doing dispicable things had (as in real life) redeeming qualities. No one (again as in real life) was/is black or white. It’s just a smart, smart movie.

The movie is called ‘Nothing is Private’ aka ‘Towelhead’, based on a novel by Alicia Erian.

(Synopsis) Against the backdrop of the first Gulf War, Jasira Maroun is 13, physically well developed but naïve and unable to say no. As puberty arrives, her mother sends her from Syracuse to Houston to her curt, up-tight, Lebanese-born father. Over the next few months, Jasira must navigate her father’s strict indifference, her discovery of sexual pleasure, the casual racism of a neighbor boy and her classmates, the sexual advances of the boy’s father, the proffered friendship of a pregnant neighbor, and her attraction to Thomas, an African-American classmate whom her father forbids her to see. Things happen to her, but can she take responsibility and control, or is tragedy inevitable?

It it has one of my all time favorite actresses who I would give my left arm to work with (and would also be invited to my all-celebrity dream dinner party) Toni Collette (photo below).

A young actress, Summer Bishil plays the lead and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and super-hottie Aaron Eckhart gives a great turn as the redneck neighbor. Peter MacDissi was also a powerhouse, playing the overbearing father. I’m shocked that Peter and Toni didn’t get nominated…they were wonderful.

So I’m thinking what IS this movie…who directed?   Who produced?  Who even cast this??  I looked it up and smiled because of course it had to be the genius Alan Ball, creator/writer of Six Feet Under, who wrote and directed.

In fact, I was so engaged, that I got up (in only my underwear) to get another Tylenol, and I stopped in my tracks in front of the TV (I didn’t want to miss anything) and I literally watched the rest of the movie standing in front of the television in my underwear like a three-year-old watching cartoons, and didn’t even realize it until after it was over!  Now THAT’S a film.

Alan, I didn’t know it was possible for me to love and admire you more than I already do – but I do. I’ll be thinking about this one for a long time.

Es una comedia estadounidense de humor negro creada por Diablo Cody (la oscarizada guionista de Juno), protagonizada por Toni Collette y producida por Steven Spilberg. La serie se estrenó en el canal por cable Showtime el 18 de enero de 2009 y se emite los martes. En latinoamérica se emite por FOX desde el 22 de septiembre, todos los martes a las 22:00.

¿De qué trata?

Tara Gregson es una ama de casa de Overland Park (Kansas) con un desorden disociativo de personalidad que decide dejar la medicación para descubrir la causa de su enfermedad. Este hecho hace que sus tres personalidades alternativas emerjan: T, una adolescente coqueta y salvaje, Alice, una ama de casa perfecta, y Buck, un veterano de la guerra de Vietnam, ordinario y bebedor de cerveza. Su familia intentará apoyarla pero ésta no será una tarea fácil.

Pop culture just can’t get enough of Asperger’s, it seems. Tomorrow, Hollywood will  screen a recent clayography film, “Mary and Max,” from director Adam Elliot. The movie features the voices of  voices of Toni Collette and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as the lead characters; and Barry Humphries and Eric Bana.  Character Max Horovitz is a 44-year-old Jewish man with Asperger’s who lives in New York City. His penpal Mary Dinkle is a 8-year-old girl in Australia. The animated movie isn’t scheduled for theatrical release but will be available Oct. 14 on many cable systems via Sundance Selects.

Como algunos avezados oyentes coligieron en cuanto sonaron los primeros acordes del primer fragmento de la banda sonora de la película, la película misteriosa de ayer es La boda de Muriel, escrita y dirigida por el australiano P.J. Morgan (Confesiones de una compradora compulsiva, Peter Pan, La boda de mi mejor amigo) y protagonizada por Toni Collette. Aclamada por el público de medio mundo y atacada ferozmente por la crítica, La boda de Muriel relata las desventuras de Muriel, una chica que pasa las horas en su habitación escuchando discos de ABBA y pensando en su boda, aunque en realidad nunca ha salido con ningún chico.

Unas vacaciones en una isla tropical y una vieja amiga cambiarán las cosas…

I realize that this is a bit behind the times since the Emmys occured almost a week ago. But my friend Liz posted this video from Newsweek on my facebook wall, and I just had to share it here.

Prior to the Emmys, Toni Collette, Jim Parsons, Sarah Silverman, Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler and Jon Cryer came together and discussed everything from comedians who had influenced them to how to improve the Emmys (i.e. not cutting the writing and directing awards). What is especially great about this video in particular is Poehler discussing how she would love to arrange a bit between the nominated actresses during the live telecast. If you caught the Emmys, that indeed happen – all the Best Supporting Actresses in a Comedy Series sported eyewear and Sarah Silverman rocked a mustache.

All the videos from the roundtable – there are eight in total – are great and definitely worth checking out.

Jordin Althaus/Showtime

Esta serie se estrena hoy por el Canal Fox a las 22:00 HRS y habrá mucha mas curiosidad de verla ya que  el domingo Tonni Collette ganó un EMMY a Mejor Actriz por su actuación, que fue creada por Diablo Cody, quien escribió el genial guión de Juno y por la cual ganó un Oscar.

En este primer capítulo conoceremos a Tara Gregor, quien en apariencia es la perfecta ama de casa Estadounidense de los suburbios, casada con Max, un hombre leal y solidario. Tienen 2 hijos adolescentes Marshall y Kate.

Pero Tara tiene un pequeño problema, sufre de Trastorno de Personalidad Múltiple y tiene tres personalidades, una de ellas es una adolescente rebelde llamada  ’T’ y la otra un tipo llamado Buck.

A pesar de la comprensión y apoyo de su familia, a  Tara se le hace bastante complicado estar al tanto de los que les sucede después de que cuando surgen sus personalidades no recuerda absolutamente nada y llegan sin aviso alguno pero conscientes de sus problemas personales.

Esta serie promete mucho y seguramente será bastante divertida.

I’d folded this into the Andre-Braugher-Is-Fabulous-And-Will-Be-On-House post, but the more I think about it, the more annoyed I get. I think I’ve figured out my problem with the Emmys–it’s that they have neither rhyme nor reason. (Perhaps that is why they used John Hodgman as an announcer, which was genius.) If we could always say, “Well, the Academy skews old, so of course they’ll take the wonderful Little Dorrit over the equally wonderful but very different Generation Kill,” we could make sense of their world. Or if it were, “Well, they’ll always take a star in another medium over someone who mostly does TV, hence Glenn Close, Toni Collette, and Cherry Jones,” we could impose some order. But when you see Kristin Chenoweth honored–HOORAY–90 seconds before Jon Cryer is also victorious–er, what?–it’s dizzying.

Much, much, much worse, however, were the omissions from the In Memorium segment. I’m sure I’m overlooking important people, too, but I can’t help but be a little miffed that they couldn’t be bothered to include Andy Hallett and Kim Manners. Particulary given that Manners was an Emmy nominee. Four different times.

Equally classy was the use of Bear McCreary’s astounding Battlestar Galactica score over the clip package on how wonderful television dramas were this year. Very few people love the BSG score more than I do, but it stings more than a little bit that this music was good enough for their broadcast but not good enough to win an Emmy. Or, you know, be nominated. I mean, it’s not like the score was written by manatees or anything, so I guess I can see why it wouldn’t be good enough to be considered for an award. 

And yet…Chenoweth. Michael Emerson was a deserving winner. Bryan Cranston’s delight will never get old (although I’m starting to feel uncomfortable for Hugh Laurie). Perhaps the most fun all night (with the exception of Hodgman) was the original song winners noting dryly that the producers probably expected a little more Justin Timberlake for their money, which makes me want them to win every year. Why can’t the Emmys make any sense?

Une vieille légende veut que le téléphone des actrices américaines cesse progressivement de sonner à partir de leur quarantième anniversaire, jusqu’à ne plus sonner du tout lorsqu’elles atteignent le cinquantième. Selon cette même légende, il n’y aurait de place à Hollywood que pour une seule actrice cinquantenaire.

En regardant les Emmy Awards dimanche soir, j’ai réalisé que cette légende n’était pas du tout une légende.

C’est Jessica Lange qui a remporté l’Emmy de la meilleure actrice dans un téléfilm pour son interprétation apparemment grandiose de Big Edie Bouvier Beale dans l’adaptation (supposément excellente) par HBO de Grey Gardens. Je suis ravi pour Jessica (qui ferait bien de mettre la pédale douce sur le botox tout de même), et MERCI HBO, vous êtes les meilleurs du monde, heureusement que vous êtes là pour rehausser le niveau de la télé, et blablabla… Mais juste une question: pourquoi est-ce qu’on doit se manger des connasses inutiles et interchangeables comme Katherine Heigl, Michelle Monaghan ou Jessica Biel au CINEMA pendant que JESSICA LANGE croupit à la télé?

Déjà, pourquoi ce film n’a-t-il pas été distribué au cinéma comme cela était prévu à l’origine du projet? Parce qu’aucune des deux actrices principales ne fait bander John Q. Public? Mais depuis quand le cinéma est-il sommé de ressembler à un dépliant Playboy? Et pourquoi ne mettrait-on pas plutôt les pétasses derrière le petit écran pour occuper le chaland pendant qu’il bâfre sa pizza, et les grandes actrices dans des grandes salles, comme il se doit?

Et surtout, pourquoi Robert de Niro, complètement sénile et jouant avec les deux mêmes grimaces depuis une bonne quinzaine d’années, se voit encore offrir des premiers rôles à plus de 65 ans? Pourquoi Anthony Hopkins et Morgan Freeman, tous deux en pilote automatique depuis un bail, sont-ils aussi sollicités, malgré leur 72 ans d’âge?

Les grandes actrices ayant dépassé la cinquantaine ne manquent pas; ce qui manque, ce sont plutôt les rôles. Jugez par vous-même: dans la même catégorie, face à Jessica, Ripley herself, Sigourney Weaver, dont le dernier grand rôle remonte à 1997 dans The Ice Storm (allez, 1999 dans Galaxy Quest si je suis d’humeur généreuse) et la légendaire Shirley MacLaine, qui n’a véritablement été bien utilisée qu’une fois ces 20 dernières années (In Her Shoes, en 2005). Je les entends déjà pleurnicher quand elle aura passé l’arme à gauche, ces hypocrites:

Shirley MacLaine était unique, irremplaçable, l’une des dernières vraies stars du grand Hollywood! Quelle perte pour le 7eme Art! Jamais personne ne lui arrivera à la cheville!

ALORS PROFITEZ-EN PENDANT QU’IL EST ENCORE TEMPS ET FAITES-LA TOURNER BORDEL!

Vous me direz, ce sont des telefilms, des one-shots, presque du cinéma finalement. Mais quid des séries?

Dans les catégorie actrice de séries, une hécatombe de déesses que le cinéma a perdu:

Glenn Close, qui, après avoir régné sur les années 80 avec la Streep (5 nominations aux Oscars en 7 ans), n’a plus jamais retrouvé de rôle à sa mesure, se laissant peu à peu enfermer par Hollywood dans des emplois de gorgones démoniaques de plus en plus stéréotypés, jusqu’a ce que la chaîne FX ne lui construise une série un cercueil dans lequel elle pourra continuer à jouer la gorgone démoniaque jusqu’à la fin de ses jours. En montant sur scène chercher son deuxième Emmy pour Damages, Glenn a clamé fièrement que ce personnage était probablement le rôle de sa vie (note à Glenn: revoir Les Liaisons Dangereuses).

Face à elle, entre autres, Sally Field et Holly Hunter. HOLLY HUNTER. Savez-vous seulement ce que cette femme est capable de faire? Avez-vous vu Broadcast News, Arizona Junior, Thirteen, Crash, Living Out Loud, LA PUTAIN DE LEÇON DE PIANO??? Une actrice de cette trempe obligée de jouer une série de deuxième ordre pour ne pas pointer au RMI, ça ne fait mal au coeur à personne, quand cet abat-jour de Jennifer Aniston enfile autant de comédie romantiques qu’elle le désire sur grand écran?

Idem dans la catégorie comédie, où ma jubilation de voir gagner Toni Collette, l’une des toutes meilleures actrices contemporaines, qui me ravit depuis à peu près quinze ans, fut fortement tempérée par le fait que depuis que sa série, United States of Tara, a démarré, elle n’a plus aucun projet ciné. D’autant que si elle est effectivement spectaculaire dans ce rôle de femme aux multiples personnalités, la série elle-même, crée par Diablo Cody, l’auteur très en vogue de Juno, ne vole pas très haut. Il est rassurant de voir que la télé américaine est là pour offrir des rôles complexes à de actrices singulières, mais pourquoi n’est-ce pas le cinéma qui s’y emploie?

Du côté des seconds rôles, des lumières du théâtre qui n’intéressent pas grand-monde à Hollywood (Cherry Jones, Janet McTeer, Kristin Chenoweth) et encore une flopée des grandes actrices de cinéma criminellement sous-employées (Dianne Wiest, Marcia Gay Harden), à l’image de la lauréate du prix du meilleur second rôle pour un téléfilm, Shohreh Aghdashloo. Qui est cette personne au nom imprononçable, me direz-vous?

Une actrice iranienne, qui fut brièvement une star dans son pays en tournant notamment avec Kiarostami, avant que la Révolution des barbus mal lavés ne la contraigne à fuir pour l’Angleterre en 1979. Ca n’est qu’en 2003 qu’elle refit surface, dans House of Sand and Fog (jamais distribué en France, forcément), où elle était phénoménale en épouse éplorée de Ben Kingsley. Après sa nomination à l’Oscar du second rôle plus que méritée, j’ai attendu en vain la suite. Miniscules rôles de-ci de-là, et finalement récupérée par la télé, d’abord dans 24 Heures, puis dans ce House of Saddam qui lui a valu un Emmy.

Regardez cette femme. Dites moi si elle n’est pas belle, sexy, élégante, et si elle n’a pas une des voix les plus magiques qu’il vous ait jamais été donné d’entendre.

Si j’ajoute à tout cela qu’elle a un talent immense, et vous pouvez me croire sur parole, vous allez me demander: pourquoi ne l’ai-je jamais vue au cinéma?

Réponse: parce qu’elle a 57 ans.

Marshall encuentra la oportunidad perfecta para hacer una gran fiesta cuando su mamá se convierte en “T” y desparece con el coche mientras Max y Charmaine van tras de ella.

Marshall quiere hacer la fiesta para acercarse a Jason, de quien está enamorado.

Não tem destes filmes que a gente começa a assistir por acaso na tv? Adaptação de um bestseller famoso, este filme começa super coerente, retratando o relacionamento conturbado de duas irmãs: Toni Collette faz a burocrática sem sal e feiosa e Cameron Diaz a loura burra gostosa que só pisa na bola. Tudo bem, a gente imagina mil clichês, mas o pega entre as duas é tenso… Ainda surge uma ótima Shirley MacLaine[tão Gloria Menezes], como uma avó renegada que vai tentar dá um jeito na situação. Tensão após tensão, lembremos que trata-se de um filme americano… O desfecho é frustrante… Aaah, se fosse um filme de algum país europeu, em geral…
Mas ainda assim, o diretor Curtis Hanson[de Los Angeles-Cidade Proibida] media momentos de drama e humor com eficácia e as três atrizes estão ótimas. Principalmente a Cameron Diaz, tentando matar de vez a persona ‘tolinha’ no Star System. Super torço por ela!

E eu queria me casar com o Mark Feuerstein… Judeuzinho mais lindo! Queria bater na Collette fazendo a cú-doce! .P
