Father of Afrobeat. Tony Allen. An entire genre doesn’t exist without this cat. He’s that heavy. Fela Kuti is half the international icon he was – and still is – sans Tony Allen behind the kit. And Tony’s still playing. Still displacing The One, still circling those long, looping phrases again steady funk guitar scratch, connecting the dots between James Brown, Lagos and New Orleans.

Here’s prime recent Tony Allen with Chicago’s Hypnotic Brass Ensemble at Cargo in London, broadcast on Red Bull Music Academy Radio [click on "Play Show" middle left of the page to launch music player].

Then check out Tony break down the basics of afrobeat on kick-snare-hat. Forward about 02:14:00 into the video. Slippery little paradiddle combos that launched a movement.

Tony Allen may not be a star, but he is a legend. In a career that spans five decades, the Nigerian-born drummer has quietly, without a flash of ego or a hint of anything self-serving, pioneered: As a sideman for the great Fela Kuti, he essentially created Afrobeat, and his influence looms large even today. If you’ve never heard his name before, well, that might have something to do with his tendency to work with more charismatic musicians like Kuti and Damon Albarn, while Allen himself prefers to sit in the background, behind his drum kit, and work one monster groove after another.

Jimi Tenor, on the other hand… well, where to begin? The Finnish musician, performance artist, and provocateur has made a name for himself based on his keen affinity for kitsch, his avant-techno compositions, his excursions into acid jazz, and his general weirdness. There’s nothing conventional about the man, and it’s hard to imagine him ever accepting a place in the background like Allen does; he may not be a star, but he does things his way, and there’s no one else like him.

Fitting somewhere between these two legacies– and greatly enhancing both of them– is the fourth volume in Strut Records’ Inspiration, Information series. If you’re not following this series, you’re missing some of the most open-ended and forward-thinking music being made today. The series– which takes two artists who have never met before, throws them in a room together, and allows collaboration and improvisation to happen like magic– started off somewhat tentatively but really took flight in early 2009 with the dynamite psychadelic-jazz fusion of Ethiopian master Mulatu Astatke and British troupe the Heliocentrics. But the fourth installment is the series’ best by a mile: Seriously funky and wonderfully weird, #4 summons all of Tenor’s most outlandish qualities and anchors them to Allen’s rocksteady drumming.

The result? A defiantly odd but joyfully fun record that’s pitched somewhere between the conservatory and the dancefloor, experimentation and raw funk, the highbrow and the profane. This is music where a stirring moral treatise is followed by a darkly comedic sex fantasia, where Afrobeat drumming provides the foundation for disco synthesisers and Ron Burgundy-style jazz flute. Tenor tinkers with anything he can get his hands on– vintage keyboards and synths, flutes, sax, skittering hand percussion– while Allen simply drums the hell out of things.

What’s remarkable about this recording is how seamlessly the two personalities integrate, how deftly Tenor’s restless imagination merges with Allen’s funk. Every song here is an experiment, a different sort of side street or dark alley than the one that preceded it, yet every one sounds like it was made for the dancehall.

The set’s opener is a killer, stuttering funk track in which Allen’s circular drumming props up a James Brown horn line. It’s got a sly melody and a killer bass vamp that makes it difficult to sit through, but what knocks it out of the park is the black humor in the rap by vocalist Allonymous, who turns in a winking ode to kinky sex on the dancefloor. The mood of this one is revisited in “The Darker Side of Night,” where Tenor himself sings of sexual pleasure in a way that somehow seems more menacing than seductive, but the flute solo, straight out of 70s-era acid jazz, sweetens the deal.

Cultures clash on a pair of more Afro-centric tracks, but even here, the sound is one of collaboration; there aren’t Allen cuts and Tenor cuts, for it is impossible to imagine any of these songs coming into being without both musicians present. “Sinuwe” is electric blues melded with African drumming and more of those funky horns. A chorus chants lyrics in Nigerian while Tenor tinkers with what sounds like a toy piano and then old analog synths, and Allen lays down a seriously smoldering groove. “Got My Egusi Fix,” meanwhile, is a bilingual track, though it could almost pass for a more traditional Afrobeat number were it not for the jazzy horn section.

Things get topical on a pair of cuts. Allonymous shows up again for a spoken word piece on “Path to Wisdom,” which briefly invokes President Obama before launching into musings on truth and morality in the postmodern age– but it’s not nearly as stuffy as it sounds; thanks to the funky backbeat, the song is a blast, and the words themselves are inspiring rather than overly esoteric or sermonizing. Later, in “Mama England,” gutter poetry and social activism meet in a lowbrow sexual metaphor that lampoons British immigration policy.

But this isn’t an album about politics, or sex, or anything else outside of pure, spontaneous creativity. Each of its nine tracks is a wonder, one that takes some time to wrap your head around but no time at all to get up and start dancing to. My favorite cut? I’d lean toward the slinky reggae of “Selfish Gene,” a wicked-cool ramblin’ song with a mean organ vamp, but I could just as easily point to the thirteen-minute closing epic, “Three Continents” a free-flowing suite that travels the globe without ever leaving the club. Come to think of it, that might be the best way to summarize this sensational recording– this is music that reaches high and far without losing its footing, an album of big ideas but even bigger grooves. It’s a knockout from top to bottom, and it’s almost as fascinating as it is fun.

Tony Allen
Homecooking
Comet/VME 2002

I dag går startskuddet for Oslo World Music Festival, men visste du at begrepet “world music

I dag går startskuddet for Oslo World Music Festival, men visste du at begrepet “world music” ble unnfanget i 1987?

God festival!

FOTO: WWW.MYSPACE.COM/CESARBOLLY

Ghetto

A thing of beauty. Ok. Let us hack away at probable minutes for the starters and reserves to see if

A thing of beauty.

Ok. Let us hack away at probable minutes for the starters and reserves to see if we can make some sense out of this. We’ll also assume that this is how the first couple of months SHOULD shape up if all goes according to plan (read: no one gets hurt). The importance of Doc playing regulator with the minutes is beyond explanation: we have aging legs that need to be kept in check during the regular season in order to ensure rest for the long haul of the playoffs.

Every minute that a bench player is on the floor is an additional minute of rest for our veteran starters. Not only do we give the reserves a chance to develop more and build fluid cohesion in their play, but we prevent the fatal compression of minutes by our starters in the middle of games. Additional minutes saved now will reward us with allowable minutes for the postseason.

This could get confusing, but I’m pretty sure this is the best way of looking at where minutes can go:

48 shared minutes at point guard

48 shared minutes at off guard

48 shared minutes at small forward

96 shared minutes at the 4/5 spots (easier to combine these positions)

At the point guard position:

Rondo gets 40 of the 48 minutes (Rondo is ready for this kind of mileage)

TA/Scal gets 8 of the 48 minutes (TA/Scal won’t play PG, but they’ll get the 8 leftover minutes and be on the floor)

At the shooting guard position:

Ray gets 34 of the 48 minutes (Would Ray’s minutes increase IF he is healthy and the front office has no intentions of re-signing him?)

Eddie gets 14 of the 48 minutes (Eddie could see more minutes if he takes some of the PG reserve minutes)

The new additions.

At the small forward position:

Pierce gets 32 of the 48 minutes (would love to even see him at 30 minutes per game and thus giving Quisy an additional 2 minutes)

Quisy gets 16 of the 48 minutes (even though Quisy will be playing the 3 spot, we know he’ll be handling the ball)

At the 4/5 positions:

Perk gets 32 of the 96 minutes (this could be more than he’ll really get; I could see his PT being in the 30 minute range, which would afford a couple of extra minutes for Sheed and Baby)

KG gets 26 of the 96 minutes (26 seems reasonable: just more than half the game; but if games are out of reach or a blowout, and it’s clear what the outcome will be, I’d love to see his time reduced earlier on)

Sheed gets 19 of the 96 minutes (would love to see him get more minutes, but where do the minutes come from?)

Baby gets 19 of the 96 minutes (would love to see him also get more minutes, but again, where do the minutes come from?)

I don’t see JR/Billy seeing many minutes unless we have players in foul trouble or there are injuries.
Lester and Shelden shouldn’t see much of anything unless there are injuries (they won’t make the active 12-man roster if everyone is healthy).

Ok. Crazy things to think about. We have the flexibility to put a freakishly awesome mix of starters and reserves on the floor. Let’s think about line up potentials:

Consistent starters:

Rondo, Ray, Pierce, KG, Perk

Consistent 2nd unit:

Quisy (playing 3, handling the ball), TA/Scal, 3ddi3, Baby, Sheed

Mix of starters and reserves (middle of the 2nd quarter, end of the 3rd quarter, start of the 4th quarter, etc.):

Rondo, Ray, Quisy, Baby, Perk

Quisy, Ray, Pierce, KG, Sheed

Rondo, Pierce, Quisy, KG, Sheed

Quisy, 3ddi3, Pierce, Baby, Sheed

Rondo, Pierce, KG, Sheed, Perk

Oh my god. My head is spinning. Is yours?

What are we seeing here? An UNBELIEVABLE mix of units on the floor at any given time. I am crying for Doc to mix up playeres in games to make matchup nightmares for opposing teams. We have the possibility to make other teams weep in their uniforms in the middle of the floor after coming out of a huddle. The five guys on the floor can go from speedy athletic (Rondo, Ray, Quisy, KG, Sheed), to powerhouse strong (Quisy, Ray, Pierce, Sheed, Perk), to a hybrid of each (Rondo, Quisy, Pierce, KG, Sheed).

The minutes matter. The minutes matter. The minutes matter. I’ll say it again: the minutes freakin’ matter! With these many lineup possibilities, we can prevent over-use and allow guys to rest. I’m envisioning a free-flowing bench that gets comfortable playing with any mix of starters on the floor. Am I crazy in thinking this? Hopefully not.

* # *

(Bernardo Oliveira)

* # *

Horarios.

WOMAD, or World of Music, Arts and Dance, concert at the Tower of London Festival was the third and final concert Michael and I attended last weekend. I booked the tickets after we already had a quite packed weekend, but I was sure Michael would enjoy some kind of detour from the classical music of the previous two days.

This concert was in a different style to the previous two. First of all it was a longer affair, starting at around 4:30 and ending at around 10pm. It was also much more relaxed…unlike for the Classical Extravaganza concert, seating was removed from the flat part of the venue and covered with sheeting, producing a picnic-like relaxed area. People were also encouraged to take along a picnic…and so we did! Michael prepared burgers for us to take with us from some minced beef we had a home, while we also took along humus, water biscuits, biscuits (which we didn’t end up eating), wine (VERY vile…but Michael liked it so drank it ) and hot chocolate in the thermos flask Michael’s parents gave me for Christmas.

So there we were…sitting, eating and being entertained . The music was good (though it seems like Michael and I didn’t always appreciate the same acts to the same extent) and the atmosphere was good . The line-up was:

4.45-5.15pm: Siyaya (Zimbabwe)
5.45-6.15pm: Abdullah Chhadeh & Syriana (Syria)
6.45-7.15pm: Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara (UK/Gambia)
7.45-8.30pm Tony Allen (Nigeria)
9.00-10.15pm The Bays/Heritage (UK)

Michael had already heard Tony Allen playing in Prague so he wanted to hear again. However, we left before the last act…we were getting tired and we needed to get home (not an easy task …especially since we came across youths celebrating the end of Ramadan, which ended up with our bus taking ages to get through). Reading up about the last act now however I am slightly disappointed we didn’t stay for them O:)…I think I would have enjoyed them! But oh well…will have to hear them out another time
