Review: Tony Hawks-Ride

That dude RexLuger is back and this time I’m reviewing the latest instalment in the legendary Tony Hawks series .Taking an extra year to make Tony Hawks Ride finally comes out of the lab with a new skateboard controller what is supposed to bring a lot of realism to the game and enjoyment. In this review we will find it if it has.

The graphics on this gamer are ok. Not bad and not great. The animations for the tricks are well done . The sound track for the game feels empty (few more tracks needed) but the ones what are there sound good The storyline mode is completely gone, so bye bye to the usual young skater trying to make it storyline. In this game you have to go to different areas and complete a series of task..and then you repeat the process <!--more-->

.4 missions types in this game leave very little variety for this game. Speed Tricks Challenge and FreeSkate . In Speed you have to get from one side to another in the fastest timeIn Tricks you have to earn as many points as you can before time runs out. In Challenge you have to do certain tricks in certain places and In Free skate … you’re free to skate. On online mode .You can play against up to 3 people and compete in Speed Tricks Challenge and check the leader board.

Trucks, Boards, wheels, clothing, skaters and new locations can all be earned and unlocked. Missions have a long glowing line directing you on where to go .While during a mission you might want to do a random trick in your environment, the skateboard controls difficulty and the fact it does not work might have something to do with this.

Trying to go forward is a challenge itself because of the design of the board. Simply trying to get from one place to another was infuriating .Thats why I always casual setting (automatic skating) because I will most probably fly into a rage if I have to use the skateboard controls .Even if you actually do skate you will have trouble using this let alone people who have never used a skateboard .You have to push down and up to do tricks, the sensors on 4 sides of the board make almost impossible to the good trick because it’s so sensitive. You might be in the doing a trick but change in the middle of it because of the poor skateboard control, which most of the time is a huge mess.

Overall the game fails to bring the fun and enjoyment we have come to associate with the tony hawks games. Better luck next time.

In July every year, as the sun sets on the first week of Wimbledon, British tennis gets its annual p

In July every year, as the sun sets on the first week of Wimbledon, British tennis gets its annual post-mortem. The results are rarely positive.

For years it was Tim Henman proudly flying the Union Jack, now it is Andy Murray, but it has been a long time since more than once home grown player made it through to the latter stages of the world’s greatest tennis tournament.

And every year when all our wild carded players are knocked out before they even make it into the car park, the Lawn Tennis Association promise that next year or at some point in the future it will be better.

But they have been saying that for as long as I can remember in my 22 years on earth, and so far they have not delivered on the promise that I have believed in for so long.

Fundamental problems with the LTA

Women’s tennis in this country, as I have already blogged about, is looking healthier than it ever has in my life time. But if you pretend Andy Murray does not exsist, then the men’s game is not at all healthy, with our next best player, Alex Bogdanovic, ranked at 186 in the world.

Some have said that Bogdanovic epitomises everything that is wrong with British tennis and its governing body the LTA.

Once thought to be the next big hope in this country, Alex has failed to capitalise on any of his eight consecutive Wimbledon wildcards.

The LTA finally withdrew his funding last year, because of his distinct lack of improvement, but many said they should have done so sooner.

Recent reports have suggested that the LTA have an annual budget of £43m, £14m of which is spent on the funding of elite players such as Bogdanovic.

I’m sure no-one would mind if they saw the fruits of this money in the player’s results but the British public rarely do. This isn’t necessarily any of the player’s faults but the fault of the LTA who clearly don’t know how to spend their money correctly.

Other Solutions

Tony (back right) coaching at the site in Morden with some of the adults who reguarly play there

Comedian Tony Hawks has made no secret of his disapproval of the governing body of the sport he loves so much.

He has argued, quite convincingly, for a complete overhaul of the way that the organisation runs itself as at the moment it is not accountable to anyone but itself.

He says that the LTA has no place in wasting money finding the next big star or on their coaches as this is not what successful tennis bodies in Europe, such as the Federation Francais de Tennis, have done.

He has drawn up his proposals alongside the Tennis For Free initiative, which promotes anyone from any background getting involved in the game. But despite having the backing of the Sports Minister, the LTA are not keen to implement the scheme.

Having read through all of Tony’s ideas I have to say that I hugely sympathise and agree with what he is trying to do. It seems so obvious that if more people play tennis and enjoy it, then more young people will start playing and eventually we will have a bigger pool of elite players to choose from in this country.

And then maybe we wouldn’t keep losing to teams that we should easily beat, such as Poland who our Davis cup team were defeated by a couple of months ago.

Tony himself said there is no “quick fix” for this particular Davis Cup team but if a similar situation is to be avoided in the future then “the LTA need to stop trying to run before they walk”.

Well from what I have seen Tennis For Free is the reverse.

Trying out Tennis For Free

I went down to Tony’s coaching session at Joseph Hood recreation ground in Morden this morning to join in with the children and adults who play there every Saturday morning. For free.

Upon arriving at the courts I was expecting to see a load of unruly children screaming and shouting and not really interested in learning how to play, but only in the end result and playing “Hollywood shots”, as my former coach used to describe them.

Well there were some kids who in Tony’s words are a “bit difficult” but mostly the youngsters there seemed keen to learn. Most surprisingly of all the majority of the group were teenagers and adults who played to a pretty decent standard.

Hopefully the scheme is also helping to debunk the myth that tennis is an elitist white middle class sport that you have to have a lot of money to enjoy.

On a winter’s day (all be it a nice and sunny one) these public courts were full. Full with people wanting to play tennis. The only time I have ever seen people playing at my local fee paying tennis club is in the two weeks of Wimbledon, and maybe for a couple after.

It was a great sight to see and all I hope is that the initiative can be broadened across the country, with the help of the relevant funding and governing bodies, in order for everyone to have the opportunity to give tennis a go.

As a teenager I had tennis coaching but I was never as good as I wanted to be and always craved the chance to play more often. All I can say is that I wish Tennis For Free had existed when I was younger and I hope that young people today make the most of it.

And you never know. Britain’s long awaited Grand Slam champion may just be starting out on one of these courts in a town near you…

By Helen Chandler

An innovative tennis scheme has been well supported by both the public and the government in its opening few years, according to its founding trustee.

Tennis For Free was set up independent of the sport’s governing body The Lawn Tennis Association in 2003 by comedian Tony Hawks, with the help of Fashion Designer Celia Hollwey. Its aim – to encourage people to pick up a racket and enjoy playing tennis, for free.

The mission statement of the organisation, as published on their website, is to increase participation in tennis nationwide for all ages regardless of ability, background, race and financial circumstance, through the use of public courts up and down the country which are normally unused.

Free Coaching

Tony Hawks with some of his older pupils at the Joseph Hood recreation ground, Morden

As well as the 2,600 courts that are now open free of charge across the country, thanks to Tennis For Free, at 13 of these there is also coaching for all ages and abilities on offer.

Hawks, a former county player and fully qualified coach, runs group sessions at one of these sites in South West London.

Speaking exclusively to Snap Features he said, “The LTA don’t spend enough on grass roots tennis, here we are teaching kids, and adults, the basic skills so they enjoy the game and hopefully pass it on to others.

I’m not saying the next big player will come from Tennis For Free but if we could expand it across the country and get loads of youngsters playing then in ten years time maybe”.

He added that he felt positive about the future of his initiative which had now got the backing of the Sports Minister, Gerry Sutcliffe, with the next step to get further funding from Sport England.

Benefits for Children and Adults

Local resident Clive Pearson attends Hawks’ sessions at the Joseph Hood recreation ground near Morden with his 7 year old son.

“I used to play tennis as a teenager and thought I would take it up again to keep fit as I bring my son down here on a Saturday morning anyway. It’s a good thing for us to do together.

I don’t think that this will replace paid for coaching, and I would consider this for my son in the future if he wanted to play more. However tennis is not always cheap and this is a great idea for kids to try out tennis before making the big and expensive commitment of joining a club”.

Because of my holiday I read the Groovy Greeks by Terry Deary. It was very good. I also read a “Very short guide to the Classics” by Mary Beard and John Henderson. That book irritated me because it kept on and on about Bassae, a place I would not visit.

I have just finished “Round Ireland with a Fridge” by Tony Hawks. Really enjoyed it- very funny. The fridge steals the show! A couple of lines does not do justice to the time I spent with this book.

Was disappointed by “The Courage to be Chaste” by Benedict Groeshel. I had hoped it would deal with what chastity means for unmarried couples. This was one area it said it would omit. Should have done more research before buying. Two things caught my interest though. One was the one temptation Groeshel described as diabolic- “Get it over with, what difference will one more episode make and then you will feel more at peace with God or at least ask for repentance (p 90). more a paraphras than a quote.

The other thought I liked was that when prayer becomes “the pearl of great price”, then people will want to give up having a heart like a sewer to gain that pearl. Of one girl it says she had no desire to threaten her newly found happiness by returning to a debauched lifestyle.

The key reflection I took from Groeshel was that personal devotion to Jesus helps people grow in virtue particularly when that devotion is focussed on the Eucharist. Groeshel suggested devotion to the Eucharist is necessary for the chaste life. He sited the example of a Protestant Clergyman in the grip of adultery (and i suppose the adulteress!) who found Eucharistic adoration gave him the strength he needed to quit. It all goes to show, you can’t confuse the roots and the fruits. No chaste life style (fruit) without Jesus (the root, the source, the alpha, the omega, the beginning the end the well spring of eternal life:)))

Read Christian Brotherhood by Joseph Ratzinger. Forgotten a lot of it now, but was intrigued by the questions surround who is a real brother and who is a false brother.

Read some of Meister Eckhart, found it hard going. Then discovered Groeshel quoted him in his book and took this as some small reward for my pains.

Doing research on the company history of The Chocolate Line, a store that I visited in September this year on a trip to Belgium –I have already commented about The Chocolate Line on a previous post – I discovered a very curious thing:

One of the store’s chocolatiers, Dominique Persoone, invented the “Chocolate Shooter“, a device that fires chocolate up your nose.

Have you ever imagined yourself sniffing cocoa?

According to the chocolatier, sniffing cocoa helps enhance the pleasure of the chocolate experience. You can get the “Chocolate Shooter” experience with cocoa and raspberry or ginger and mint, for example.

Tony Hawks, the famous British comedian and author, visits recently The Chocolate Line store and shared a video showing his interview with Dominique, the inventor of the “Chocolate Shooter“. Dominique says the idea came from when he was asked to prepare desserts for a party that some of the Rolling Stones would be attending. Then, he began to consider the concept of sniffing cocoa.

During the interview, Dominique holds his patented device below Tony Hawks nostrils and instructs him to breathe in on the count of three, at which point he will catapult chocolate powder.

When you arrive at the corner of the Simon Stevinplein Street stop by The Chocolate Line store.

The Chocolate Line front store in Bruges, Belgium

On my trip there in September, I saw many people gathered in front of the store and I decided to get there. When I arrived in front of the The Chocolate Line’s show window and I noticed people were having so much fun watching a fancy family of Penguins.

The Penguins, made of styrofoam, were holding in their beaks little pieces of chocolate molded into different shapes: sea-shells, fishes, sea-stars and whatever other shape imitating sea-animals.
In fact, it is a creative strategy to attract more customers. Do you see in the picture how many people are interested in seeing the Penguin Family? The next stop, for sure, was to get into the store to buy all those wonderful and delicious chocolates of The Chocolate Line. I went in also to investigate and buy some chocolate and I was so impressed with the variety of shapes and unusual flavours of chocolates.

Every flavour imaginable was represented in some way, even wasabi. I particularly loved the cinnamon one, but they also have lemongrass, chili with meant, garlic confit in the olive oil with Mexican coffee, basil mango, guacamole and a range of ingredients which I would never have imagined going on chocolates. You must to go to The Chocolate Line in Bruges and taste them!

I just checked out The Chocolate Line website to see if I can buy any chocolate online and unfortunately not. I will definitely go back to Bruges to get more chocolate from this store.

O tempo passou… A idade chega, mas essas coisas a gente nunca esquece.

E vai lembrar mais ainda da trilha sonora. Memorável. Tinha músicas de algumas bandas que (quase) ninguém tinha tinha visto antes, mas era demais! E tinha “Fight Like a Brave” do Red Hot Chili Peppers!

The Fridge-hiker’s Guide To Life”

Carrie started this episode being pals with Big, and wondering ‘what really defines a relation

Carrie started this episode being pals with Big, and wondering ‘what really defines a relationship.’ Someone as loveless as Carrie would no doubt see a relationship as some kind of ’status’, but the true romantics in life – mostly me, view a relationship as something organic and beautiful. Close your eyes and think of the nicest thing you can imagine. If that thought involves being with someone you really really really really like, then that defines a relationship. When you lose all your inhibitions with somebody – that’s a relationship. When the world seems to stop turning when you’re with someone, and everything else seems irrelevant and not important – that’s a relationship, not the bullshit idea of money and ’something to do’ that most idiots seem to believe in.

Speaking of idiots, Miranda ‘hooked up’ with some idiot who drew cartoons for a living. This so called ‘cartoonist’ had a habit of going to the toilet whilst Miranda was brushing her teeth, which made her feel rather uncomfortable. To counter this, Miranda had a slash in front of him to try and change boundaries. Looking at Miranda sitting on the toilet, newspaper tossed aside, legs akimbo, reminded me of the opening half an hour of ‘Saving Private Ryan.’ Sure, I appreciate that it looks realistic, and artistically speaking it was a breakthrough and a triumph, but there is only so much horror one can take – and whether that’s hundreds of ’soldiers’ dying in a Hollywood studio, or a thirty five year old ginger lawyer taking a piss, enough really is enough sometimes.

Samantha met a lesbian who she was rather attracted to. I’ve not seen so much rug munching since my dog went mad over some gone off Pedigree Chum, and promptly proceeded to rip up my bespoke vintage carpet with its razor sharp teeth in a complete frenzy. I’ve stuck to hardwood floors ever since, and of course the dog was put down. Alas, the real dog – Samantha failed to be extinguished, and she even tried lecturing Big on relationships – warning him to stay away from Carrie.

No offence to anyone, but Samantha trying to lecture Big on relationships and life would be the equivalent to Kate and Gerry McCann telling Ian Huntley not to kill children – a touch hypocritical when all of the people involved are guilty of the same thing, whether that’s being selfish lovers, or murdering innocent children. Allegedly.

Speaking of children, and childish things, Charlotte got a love bite from Trey. Never really understood the appeal of those. By all means have a little rough and tumble in the bedroom, have a bit of a bite if the mood takes you, but why would you want to end up looking like you’ve been attacked by a gang of particularly angry wasps? I wouldn’t know about wasps actually, I’ve never been bitten by anything – unless you count the infamous day where I was stung by Cupids arrow, which enabled me to give all my love into the world.

The film ‘Seven’ deals with the seven deadly sins as made famous in the little known philosophical book entitled ‘The Bible.’ I was flicking through my battered copy of that particular work of fiction the other day, and I began to make a connection between the aforementioned sins, and the four lead characters of Sex And The City. Each sin is represented by at least one, and usually two or three of the ladies in the show. Let’s go through them, and stick with me here.

Gluttony - Samantha’s insatiable appetite for all things sexual at the expense of emotions and feelings certainly falls under the idea of ‘an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.’ Carrie’s smoking as well – not really relevant, but I will never be able to fully express eloquently how much I hate smoking.

Lust – Clearly all four of them suffer from this vice, and whilst I don’t really have a problem with the idea of lust, if the Bible said it, I must – and shall believe it.

Envy - Women in general are all jealous of each other, and these four are no different. From feeling jealous of another woman’s shoes, to shooting poisoned glances at a married couple and their charming son, each of the four shows classic signs of envy – and crucially they don’t acknowledge this, rather blaming the rest of the world for their own faults.

Anger – Who can forget when Carrie smacked Big in the face? Or when Miranda angrily slammed the phone down after phone sex? Or when Charlotte angrily hated HERSELF because of failed relationships? Or even Samantha’s complete self loathing of herself, which masquerades as confidence? Oh, all of you forgot…

Greed – Whether it be Miranda wanting the ‘perfect’ man without concentrating on her own imperfections, or Charlotte negotiating a new prenuptial agreement prior to her relationship with Trey, greed is a central feature of Sex And The City, and is one of the main reasons for all four women continually making stupid mistakes.

Sloth – Too much Chinese food, not enough yoga.

Pride -’The excessive belief in ones own abilities’ – an attribute that could be certainly labelled at Carrie who prides herself as an expert on sex, relationships and love in general, despite being as good at those three things as Michael Barrymore was at having low key pool parties. Also, Carrie skimping about in little outfits when she has all the sex appeal of a grandmother in a used nappy.

Sex appeal was apparent at the end of the episode, where Carrie remarked that “I really like this guy” referencing a jazz musician whom she had flirted with in the episode. That’s the problem with life – as soon as one door closes, another opens – and the new one is playing jazz. Fucking jazz! Who even listens to jazz apart from geography students and indie kids who illegally downloaded ‘Kind Of Blue’ by Miles Davis one night and listened to thirty seconds of it before putting on La Roux or something shit like that.

What is the world coming to? Why can’t everyone be more like Gay Stanford?

If you’ve read the highly recommended most recent issue of This Way Up – which, if you haven’t, you should do so forthwith – you’ll probably have read my article on those fondly-remembered run-up-to-Christmas Childrens’ BBC drama serials with a supernatural/sci-fi twist (apart from, erm, the one about tennis). Within it you may also have spotted a reference to How To Be Cool, the bizarre Philip Pullman-penned The Prisoner/A Clockwork Orange-inspired 1988 ITV Saturday afternoon blockbuster about the ‘fashion police’, starring Roger Daltrey, Freddie Jones and Gary Glitter (whose presence sadly means that it will probably never be shown anywhere ever again).

But what became of the younger cast members, playing the self-declared ‘Frontiers Of Style’ who endured regular beatings by Perry Fenwick’s secret police in the name of restyling while united by their mantra “Smash The Cool Board!”? Some of them looked like they were destined to be pretty famous at the time, but all of them – with the notable exception of Tricia Penrose, who went on to become a longterm blue eyeshadowed fixture behind the bar on Heartbeat – have since disappeared completely. So, the call goes out across the virtual ether… FOS, where are you now??

Robert McKewley – went on to play ‘Spider’ in famous Porkpie prequel Desmond’s, before landing the lead role in forgotten fab ITV Saturday evening youth club sitcom What You Lookin’ At? (“Uh-huh!”), showed up a couple of times to fall down the stairs shouting ‘BARSTARD!’ in Bottom, and was last seen in something called …At First Sight in 2000. Robert McKewley, where are you now?

Russell Lee – unless he’s the same Russell Lee who has appeared in dozens of Portugese language films, it looks as though, despite hazy memories of his having shown up in Casualty, he never played anyone other than ‘Nings’ (whose beard, famously, “…just grew during French”). Russell Lee, where are you now?

Jason Nardone – the one who looked like John Gordon Sinclair dressed as Tony Hawks in his Morris Minor & The Majors incarnation apparently did the voiceover for an animated film called Matroos in 1998, but nothing else before or since. Jason Nardone, where are you now?

Julie Foy – then the most high profile of the younger cast members by a long chalk, having spent several years as The ‘Girl’ One in Jossy’s Giants and a lengthy stint as Sally’s troublesome younger sister in Coronation Street, not to mention a fairly prominent guest role in Press Gang. Last rumoured – quite some time ago – to have moved into theatre. Julie Foy, where are you now?

Tristan Maguire – for his iconic role as ‘The Mighty Gobbo’, and for playing virtually the same character in Press Gang, and probably the same one in The Bill, A Touch Of Frost and So Haunt Me too, he will never be forgotten. Except, apparently, by everyone else in the world ever. Tristan Maguire, where are you now?

Okay, I thought as I post music videos I might as well talk about the book I’ve just finished

Okay, I thought as I post music videos I might as well talk about the book I’ve just finished reading. Despite the name of the book it is really quite funny. Its the funniest thing I’ve ever read.

I wasn’t so sure about it at first but because I needed something to read during my free time I took a chance on it and I can safely say I’m glad I bought it.

Tony Hawks (not the skateboarder) charts his journey around Ireland hitch hiking with a fridge. The book starts with Tony talking about his last trip to Ireland before the hitch hiking where he recounts a hilarious talent show experience involving two Irish men Seamus and Tim dressed up as Batman and Robin with a teapot and a kettle. It was here that his facination with Ireland had begun. Later on the same day, Tony met Seamus’ best friend Kieran who drove him up to Cavan in the North. While on this journey, Tony noticed a hitch hiker who was hitch hiking with a fridge and whilst this was nothing to Kieran, Tony was fascinated.

Fast forward a couple of years and the next time the fridge was mentioned was at a dinner party thrown by his mate Kevin in Brighton. Naturally, drinks flowed and the fridge came up in conversation and as the guests drunkenly admired Kevin’s new fridge, Tony recalled the hitch hiker. He told the story of the ‘Fridge Man’ which was greeted by expressions of disbelief from Kevin who insisted that no one could hitch hike around Ireland with a fridge. The next morning, Tony wakes and there’s a piece of paper with the ‘£100 bet that Tony cannot hitch hike around the circumference of Ireland with a fridge in one calendar month’. And so the adventure begins.

Armed with an unruly backpack and a small white fridge on a cart, Tony sets out to prove Kevin wrong. Along the way he meets some people both weird and wonderful and even gets caught in compromising positions. There are the people at the pub in Westport who want to christen the fridge and do so by naming it Sairose -meaning ‘freedom’ – and pouring pints of beer over the fridge to compensate for Holy Water and visiting a Benedictine nun to bless the fridge. Then there are the surfers and Bingo at Strandhill who refuses to let Tony surf unless the fridge can have a go too. So ensues a crazy attempt to get the fridge onto the surf board for Man and Domestic appliance must live together in perfect harmony. Tony and the fridge visit livestock fayres and even get entered into a local bachelor competition as well as meeting the poorest King on Earth on the Tory Island.

Tony’s trip around Ireland is further helped by RTE radio’s interest in his expedition and as a result he gets free accomodation and even free drinks from Irishmen and women who follow his trials and tribulations intently on morning radio. In a mad month, Tony becomes known as the ‘Fridge Man’ and is taken to the country’s heart although when he finally makes it to Dublin, the welcoming committee is a more than normal ending to a crazy but inspirational book.

Round Ireland with a Fridge was such a funny book and I enjoyed it very much. However, due to the many laugh out loud moments (of which there are A LOT), it was verging on impossible for me to read it during my free time in college or in any public place.

Customer Reviews

Not bad for what it is. You’ll need help or experience to assemble it.
I was intrigued by the endorsement and the fantastic price. I figured it ahead of time for a Dynacraft (Walmart) and it was. As with all Walmart type bikes it was poorly protected in its box and arrived scratched and with a broken brake handle. I’m a bike mechanic so finding a spare handle was no problem and the scratches were cosmetic only.
The bike is pure Walmart quality, meaning standard but functional components. It does have a 3-piece crank and decent Tektro copy brakes however.
Assembly took 45 minutes (unusually long for me) because both rims needed to be trued, the brakes and dérailleurs adjusted and re-torquing of several connectors.
I do like the bike though. It’s not as heavy as I thought it would be (sub 30lbs) and rides and handles rather well. It’ll be an excellent short-commuter and gravel path bike. It’s definitely not for mountain biking but, for what I paid, its not bad at all. And it does have the ‘Tony Hawk’ logos. Just be prepared to do a lot more than put on a wheel and go for a ride when it arrives.

Good bike
I received the bike very quickly, it came with instructions for the minimal assembly required as well as the tools needed. The brakes and gears do require some tweaking, many parts had to be loosened and adjusted, and the chain comes without grease. If you are not familiar with bicycle assembly you may be better off taking it to your local bike shop. Once i put it together and made all the proper adjustments i have no complaints. It is a smooth riding bike with a sturdy frame. If there are any problems in the future, the forks/frame have lifetime warranty and all other parts are under a 2 years warranty.
