Ending the Saturday night concert at the In The Flow Festival with Tony Passarell’s Thin Air Orchestra has become a tradition.  Passarell is a longtime Sacramento improviser who constantly adds instruments and groups to his repertoire.  The Thin Air Orchestra may be his grandest project to date.  Oftentimes consisting of 20+ members, the group will be filling Midtown’s streets and alleys with the sound of freedom.

Thin Air Orchestra is the brainchild of saxophonist and conductor Tony Passarell. Conceived for the In The Flow Festival, TAO gathers together a large group of players from all over California to create music in a completely improvised setting. Now in it’s 4th year!

This last summer I did some improv. jamming with Alex Jenkins (tablas) and Tony Passarell (horns/bass/etc.).  I played my fake sitar/guitar as we found some droney grooves.  We’re finally trotting this out as Swimming in Bengal.  You can hear some stuff from a practice session at our Bandcamp thing.  Where will the unpredictable tides of Bengal take us?  Will we drown?

Joining us is Dead Western, the pre-freak folk freakiest.  I’m guessing Troy will be playing some new songs from the album he’s currently working on.  Catch DW before he heads out for another European tour.  Climb inside Troy’s baritone and you will be free.

Also on the bill is Invasive Species, the duo of percussion dream weavers Jon Bafus and Kevin Corcoran.  Two of Sacramento’s most forward thinking drummer boys, who play in many combos, but rarely with each other.

I recently got together with Sacramento improvisational champ Tony Passerell to try some Indian raga-ish jams with tabla/percussionist Alex Jenkins.  Some stuff from our first get together can be downloaded for free.  I played my gourd guitar/sitar thang and Tony played saxophone and stand up bass.   We’ll probably do a little playing out when time permits.
