A new councillor has been elected in the Halewood South ward of Knowsley.

Labour candidate Allan Harvey received most votes in the by election held on Thursday 26 November.

The votes cast are as follows:

Turnout: 23.06%

The BNP will try and present this in a good light (coming third after not even putting up a candidate last time), but in reality this is is a bad result for them.

They put a lot of effort into the campaign locally (though without any obvious support from the party nationally), they were campaigning in an overwhelmingly white ward (recent census figures show only a 4% ‘ethnic’ population), they had a local candidate and the election was held against a backdrop of economic crisis, local uncertainty over the future of major employers and unhappiness with the main parties. The BNP benefited from a low turnout in the European elections, but getting their vote out here was still not enough.

We cannot be complacent, of course, and further challenges will come with the general election, but we have to thank all our activists, and those from the unions and elsewhere, who campaigned in the ward and exposed the real politics of the BNP.

So, Merseyside BNP have announced that their candidate in the Halewood by-election will be Tony Ward. Tony, like fellow Liverpool BNP goon Peter Tierney, is a BNP “super-activist.” He is also, according to the propaganda of his party, victim of a “violent attack” where he “was stuck twice by a claw hammer wielded by a black thug.”

However, there were problems with the original media reporting of the incident, with both the BBC and Sky News relying solely upon the accounts of BNP members. And there are discrepancies in the BNP’s story.

Party spokesman Dave Jones, according to the Sky News report, said that “fundraiser was due to take place at Pure nightclub in Leigh, but was cancelled at the last minute.” In fact, the BNP website made a point of declaring that the fundraiser was responsible for “raising an amazing £2,200 for the Euro election fund despite a violent attack on BNP members elsewhere” because in fact “the evening itself went off without a hitch” to the point where it gathered a “standing room only crowd of well over one hundred people.” Though a relatively minor point, when taken with the fact that there have been no neutral or even opposition eyewitness reports available, it does put the BNP’s version of events in doubt.

It is even more in doubt now, with the news that the “black thug” in question has been aquitted. Nick Griffin immediately went on the defensive on the main BNP website, claiming there was “one law for British people, another law for the colonisers.”*

All that we can say for definite, then, is that Tony Ward was involved in violence and came off worse.

Ward’s “agent” during the campaign, meanwhile, is Andrew Tierney. Andrew’s job during organised BNP activities, as many antifascists will be well aware, is to take photos and videos with an aim to intimidation. We understand that his “works” have ended up on American neo-Nazi sites as well as Stormfront and the similar Vanguard News Network.

His photographs of “reds” on the Merseyside BNP blog have been accompanied on several occassions by names and addresses, as is typically found on Redwatch. It doesn’t take much speculation to wonder, then, what the purpose of this might be…

Andrew’s brother, Peter, is of course facing charges of assault in the crown court. As documented on this site and elsewhere, he used a camera tripod to smash in the face of an antifascist (with local organiser Steve Greenhalgh trying to do the same to another with an upended table) in frustration at being routed from every spot where they tried to peddle their filth to the people of Liverpool.

These three people, then, are a prime example of what Merseyside BNP stand for. Violence, thuggery, and intimidation, not to mention the rush to claim victim-status when it all goes wrong and somebody fights back.

Liverpool Antifascists most certainly don’t condone violence against innocent people, but then that’s one reason why we fight fascism and the BNP.

*On a side note, people may be interested in a little BNP hypocrisy here. “White bastard” is apparently a racist slur, and that somebody got away with saying it is “disgraceful,” yet the BNP does not chastise itself for the use of the phrase “black thug.” bear in mind, too, that the black person was aquitted of thuggery. Nick Griffin is white, but has yet to be acquitted of being a bastard.

The BNP have announced their candidate for the council by-election in Halewood on November 26th. He is Tony Ward, of Halewood Village. He is a ‘Gold’ member of the party and received press attention after being involved in a clash with anti-fascists in Leigh last March.

Several leafleting campaigns are in the making, and other strategies for organising against the BNP in the area being discussed. Tony Ward has always been a favorite of mine.. Madonna’s go-to accessory through much of the early 90’s, Ward was one of the original male supermodels, and has worked on campaigns for Fendi, Boss, D&G, and of course, Calvin Klein underwear. CACHAN, FRANCE – A London-based collector has purchased Tony Ward’s 1995 tableaux vivant entitled “The Figure” for 15,000 euros ($18,000). The purchase, made during Ward’s participation in a group show entitled Sexe et Convenance, in the Parisud Gallery in Cachan, France, sets a new benchmark for a large scale Ward work. The print was the first in an edition of five of “The Figure” at the size of 48″ X 72″. The second print in the edition is now being offered at 19,000 euros ($22,000). Probably one of the most important music videos for gay culture, Madonna’s Justify My Love breaks the boundaries of gender and sexuality. Madonna makes love to sexy Tony Ward, while several other adrogenous personas are living a range of different sexual scenes in the other rooms.
