This Friday Metropolis Wine Merchants will pour some wines from France at The Winery, located on 2166 Fredrick Douglas Blvd between West 116th and 117th Street. Metropolis Wine Merchant is a family-owned, boutique importer of fine wine, and Tony White who has been in the wine business for over 15 years, will be at The Winery sharing his knowledge of wine this Friday. There you can taste his supply of wine as well as buy a bottle…or two, since The Winery is now carrying his products. Oh, and did I mention that the bottles are pretty recession friendly…

A very enjoyable night last night, as I hit the rather wonderful Book Club Boutique (and here on Facebook) for a London Short Story night set up and MC’d by Tony White. Some excellent writers – particular stand outs were Will Ashon’s subtly fantastical biscuit opera, and Matthew De Abaitua’s Ballardesque tale of North London inter-dinner party combat.

It also marked an allumination first. Inspired by Christian Payne on Friday, I’ve decided to start expanding my technological and media reach. So, I recorded Tony reading from ‘Albertopolis Disparu’; the video’s below. Visual quality is ok, but the sound is perfect, so sit back and enjoy:

I saw this animated film on an art blog and knew I had to commandeer it for my own blogging purposes.

It’s an older work by Seattle animator Tony White (who posted it on youtube a few weeks ago): A life of Katsushika Hokusai, 19th century master of the woodblock print. Appropriately, somehow, he was the son of a mirror-maker.

I remember sitting in the Fine Arts Library at the University of Texas one morning years ago, sketching, copying a Hokusai drawing for an assignment in Life Drawing class. He seemed so perfect and so modern. 

White suggests that this genius draftsman (who died in 1849) would have been an animator if he were alive today.  I look at his work and think “children’s illustration.”

Of course you can’t invoke Hokusai without also mentioning that other print master of Edo (Tokyo) whose name also started with an “H.”

June is so yikes-hot in  Austin, Texas. Maybe that’s why this next video grabbed my eye. Enjoy the wintery Agano Snow Scene by Utagawa (Ando) Hiroshige.  He was influenced by Hokusai, who was just a few years ahead of him on the ukiyo-e  time line. 
 

Born in 1797 to a samauri family, Hiroshige became a Buddhist monk in his later years.  He has an out-of-this-world-distinction as a graphic artist: A  crater on the planet Mercury is named after him.

Like many Europeans I’ve always been interested in European history, and when it comes to the much-debated history of Eastern Europe and the Balkans in particular, the classic travelogue, Black Lamb and Grey Falcon: A Journey Through Yugoslavia by Rebecca West, is a great place to start. 

A more recent book on this topic, Another Fool in the Balkans: In the Footsteps of Rebecca West by Tony White,  debating the former book  in a modern context would make an excellent companion to Rebecca West’s masterpiece.

Nach unserer Nominierung von MUH! / Matterhorn Project in der höchst erfolgreichen TV-Sendung “Die grössten Schweizer Hits” ist das Interesse an MUH! wieder stark angestiegen. Vor allem DJs haben uns immer wieder gefragt nach einer Club-Version.

Nun, wir haben eure Wünsche erhört und zusammen mit Electroking-DJ Tony White einen Club-Remix gebaut, der auf den Namen “MOO! Swiss Chalet Remix” hört. Gleichzeitig haben wir auch eine neue Single-Version produziert. Um Verwechslungen mit der MUH!-Original-Hitsingle von 1985 zu vermeiden, heisst das neue Baby MOO!.

Den Cover, den wir absolut geil finden, hat wieder unser Hauszeichner Simon Inäbnit auf dem Gewissen – danke, Simon, für die tolle Arbeit. Ebenfalls wieder mit von der Partie sind die Kuhglocken und der wunderschöne Jodel von Heidi Blum. Heidi hatte damals vor 22 Jahren viele Anfeindungen aus der Ländler-Szene erleben müssen, denn Jodeln im Pop-Kontext gab es noch gar nicht und wurde als “Verkitschung” empfunden. Heute sind alle toleranter geworden und freuen sich einfach an der Musik.

Auch Stella und ich wurden in den 80er-Jahren wegen MUH! angefeindet. Der Schweizer Pop-Sender DRS3 weigerte sich damals gar, den Song zu spielen, nur gerade in der Hitparade kamen sie nicht darum herum. Die haben das wohl als Verrat an der Popmusik empfunden – wie engstirnig das nun im Rückblick wirkt! Wir hoffen jedenfalls, dass wir heute mit MOO! bei DRS3 auf mehr Gegenliebe stossen werden…
