I’ve decided that this blog is missing some structure.  And that it’s a good idea to introduce a little structure by way of segments.

Now you’ll be able to check in periodically (or subscribe) and see posts that are somewhat cohesive. Or something.

Anyway, my first new addition is going to be titled “Shacking Up”.  And it’s my guide to living in sin with your significant other.  It’s very much only related to my experiences in this department and is in no way meant to generalize towards the rest of the shacking up population.

One of the biggest differences between not living with your boyfriend and living with your boyfriend is poo.

See, a lot of guys are completely not ready for the shared bathroom scenario.  As my brother once said, girls don’t poop.  And it’s hard to shatter that image.  But trust me, girls poop.  And if you live with one you’ll learn that a lot of them poo only at home.  So get used to it.

After a few months of communal bathrooming, you become more comfortable with you SO and then something kind of weird may happen.  You may (or maybe it’s just us) start tinkling with the door ajar.  I’ve decided to view this as a sign that we’re just that much more comfortable with each other.

That’s right, hearing a steady stream is a sign of accomplishment in a relationship.

However, do not think that it’s okay to drop a deuce with the door open.  That’s a never gonna happen – never want to hear situation.  But you will become more comfortable discussing bowel movements while watching reruns of Scrubs.  And you’ll be surprised at the frequency with which you toot in mixed company.

It’s a sign of the times. And times they are a changing.

…Oh God. Did I really just talk about poop? It looks like we’re all shacking up now…

World of Reggae Music Collection: Vintage Reggae

The Early Years

The Jam-Tex selector digs deeper into the reggae genre, focusing in on some of reggae’s earliest hits. Positive vibrations drip from songs like Dobby Dobson’s “Loving Pauper” and The Pioneers‘ “Let Your Yeah Be Yeah.”  Reggae legends Bob Marley & The Wailers, Toots & The Maytals, and Delroy Wilson all laid down foundational tracks during this early period of reggae music.

This particular collection features early vintage hits from the well-known male artists like John Holt, Alton Ellis, Desmond Dekker, Johnny Clarke, Ken Boothe, and Bob Andyand female artists Marcia Griffiths, Susan Cadogan, and my favorite Phyllis Dillon. Many of the musicians from the rock steady era like Derrick Morgan and Stranger Colerecorded early reggae hits. Alongside the more well-known vocalists, this collection features lesser-known artists like K.C. White and Watty Burnett, who laid down infectious reggae tunes like “No No No (You Don’t Love Me Anymore)” and “Rainy Night in Portland.”

Here in the early reggae cuts you find amazing originality. Dennis Brown tracks like “Westbound Train” and “Man Next Door” encapsulate the raw power of reggae. And, Delroy Wilson’s bass heavy “Better Must Come” might be the greatest reggae song ever recorded. Plus the early Bob Marley & the Wailers’ songs forged music and message into a powerful punch. Together Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer recorded original classics like “Mr. Brown,” “Try Me,” and “Jailhouse.” These legends of reggae music would forever change the course of music history.

The premiere of the 25th Night of the Proms edition in Antwerp(B), with Roxette, Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark, Toots Thielemans, Peter and Zoltan Katona, John Miles and more was highly appreciated! There are some very small issues that need some attention, but it was really a great show! Although it was very stress-full sometimes with more than 20 photographers on a small place between the catwalk and the crowd! But hey… that’s part of the job! No?

The Iowa City, Iowa, band’s new album, “Work To Do”, has a polished sound that begins with a solid get-happy/dance-now immediacy and resolves with a roots-bass on/off-time dub influenced ambience.  The production of each song suits Public Property very well; reggae of this caliber is meant for the live experience, and the feeling comes through this disk, into your headphones, as if the listener was there with the band.  At the start of it, the first lyrics heard are “Get ready….”  Make no mistake of song placement, here.  It could be coincidence; nonetheless, one listen of this record will convince fans that Public Property has grasped their sound tighter than a one-drop.  Those who are hearing this for the first time need to get ready; the new leaf to turn over.

In the last year, the group has gone through a few changes in members, yet they have kept  momentum a priority and rocked reggae to each town awaiting Public Property’s next show.  “Movement” was the 2006 release; home of several local hits and common requests, such as “Follow,” “On My Way,” and “Breakdown.”  The 2006 record is full of brilliant writing, clever instrumental precision, and a constant steady flow of feel-good, politically awakening, substance from one tune to the next.  Although the quality is impressive, the “Movement” disc lacks a certain level of professionalism that “Work To Do” makes look easy.  A more vivid production quality is what Public Property followers have been waiting for; a well-deserved tip of the hat for the time, patience, and resourcefulness taken in effort to create such a sound.

In addition to the general grade of the album, vocals on this album have grown individually and collectively; there is a new sense of maturity in lead singer, David Bess’, tone and confidence.  After performances with such legends as Toots and the Maytals, Public Property has reached out with the title track of the new album featuring the one and only Frederick “Toots” Hibbert.

Politically, this record is a shared voice of the people.  Musically, each track encourages the listener to dance until they wake up to a new day.  Public Property has done their work and created a phenomenal album; more need to hear of its existence.  Several new songs are absolute hits, on a wider scale than their past releases.  The future of reggae looks forward to their successful journey.

When we were camping, there was a missing knot in the bench of the picnic table, leaving a hole. Evie asked what it was for and, because I take the “Calvin’s dad” philosophy of question answering*, I naturally told her it was for “toots”.

Let me back up a second and explain toots. We didn’t have any cutesy names for bodily functions when I was a kid, we called a spade a spade. When Evie was younger, Sara asked me what names we should use for things and I was like, “huh?” It just didn’t occur to me that you should make ups some silly phrase. It doesn’t make it any more polite people, talking about farts in the first place is what’s rude, not using the word fart. That being said, when Evie says “toots” it’s the darned cutest thing you could ever imagine the world.

So anyway, I told her the hole was for toots, not thinking much of it. The “toot hole” (as Evie called it) must really have captured her imagination. She went around telling everybody about the toot hole and spend a decent amount of time trying to toot on the toot hole. It wasn’t long before the origin of the phrase was traced back to me.

Time passes and I don’t think much about it. Then one day we were sitting out on the back porch and she said, “My red chair has a toot hole!” See, her chair is one of those plastic ones and it has a hole so that (presumably) the water can drain off. I had long since forgotten about the original toot hole and the fact that she remembered it took me by surprise. This brought another round of Evie doing her darndest to toot on the hole. Not as funny as the first time, since I now had the sinking feeling she wasn’t going to forget about this one.

Fast forward to this week. Evie and I were pretending to go camping, one of her favorite games. Evie was telling me a big story about her imaginary, fully-featured lawn chair. It was blue with yellow arm rests. It had all the features, cup holders, a thing to lie back in, and, of course, a toot hole.

Don’t say I never taught you nothin’ kid.

Calvin: Dad, how come old photographs are always black and white? Didn’t they have color film back then?
Dad: Sure they did. In fact, those old photographs are in color. It’s just the world was black and white then.
Calvin: Really?
Dad: Yep. The world didn’t turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was pretty grainy color for a while, too.
Calvin: That’s really weird.
Dad: Well, truth is stranger than fiction.
Calvin: But then why are old paintings in color?! If their world was black and white, wouldn’t artists have painted it that way?
Dad: Not necessarily. A lot of great artists were insane.
Calvin: But… but how could they have painted in color anyway? Wouldn’t their paints have been shades of gray back then?
Dad: Of course, but they turned colors like everything else did in the ’30s.
Calvin: So why didn’t old black and white photos turn color too?
Dad: Because they were color pictures of black and white, remember?

I’ve been meaning to get this post up for a couple weeks but our 4th grader kept forgetting to bring her composition notebook home. And she’s really the author of this post.

Over Labor Day weekend, we drove down to Mom’s folks’ house. We picked the girls up after school and were on our way. About halfway there, Riley pulls out her composition notebook. Riley enjoys writing stories.

“Mom and Dad do you want me to read you the book I wrote?”

“You wrote a book?”

“Yes. It’s called The A to Z Toot Book.”

Well how about that, our daughter wrote a book about toots. Cutting the cheese. Barking spiders. Messages from the interior secretary. The thunda from down unda.

And here it is (with some commentary from me):

A is for the Appalachian Toot. Also known as the Hillbilly Toot. You can smell the gubmit cheese.

B is for the Bionicle Toot. I don’t really know what a bionicle is or why it is tooting.

C is for the Caribbean Toot. Spicy with dreads.

D is for the Ding Dong Toot. You probably have heard this one. High pitched to start with a real low bass to finish.

E is for the Echoing Toot. Usually performed in tunnels. Easy to blame on somebody else.

F is for the Fillipian Toot. It’s biblical. I was laughing too hard to tell her she misspelled it.

G is for the Galloping Toot. You’ve done this. You’re running and it’s sneaking out between strides.

H is for the Hound Dog Toot. Always nasty.

I for the Icy Toot. Popping a cold one.

J is for the Jumping Toot. The very idea of a jumping toot is frightening.

K is for the Kangaroo Toot. Sounds like Crocodile Dundee.

L is for the Leprechaun Toot. Smells like potatoes. AKA the “McToot.”

M is for the Moroccan Toot. Spicy with a touch of chickpeas.

N is for the Nestiga Toot. She’s either just making up words or she actually invented a new toot.

O is for the Octopus Toot. Shoots ink.

P is for the Potato Toot. Made famous by Dan Quayle. Related to the Leprechaun Toot but more starchy.

Q is for the Quitter Toot. Noisy with a sudden ending.

R is for the Rhombus Toot. An equilateral parallelogram other than a square toot.

S is for the Soloing Toot. One done alone on a stage or in the Millennium Falcon.

T is for the Tomato Toot. Fights cancer.

U is for the Uranus Toot. Self-explanatory.

V is for the Voca Toot. Rye evidently doesn’t know a lot of words that begin with “v”.

W is for the Wong Kong Toot. Beef and broccoli.

X is for the X-ray Toot. A toot so powerful it emits radiation.

Y is for the Yo-Yo Toot. In and then out, in and then out.

Z is for the Zon-Zon Toot. Far Eastern in origin. Foul in stench.

Yesterday (thursday september 10th) I was invited by the founder of the Belgian fan website of the NOTP to make some pictures on the 25th press conference for their site! With BIG names like OMD, Roxette, Toots Thielemans, Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), Peter and Zoltan Katona, John Miles, the choir ‘Fine Fleur’, Il Novecento with Robert Groslot, I think this years edition will be a BIG spectacle!

In this post I will only put 3 pictures of ‘Toots’, a living Jazz-legend, Thielemans! The rest is off course for the fan-site…

The World of Reggae Music

The Ska Originals

The Jam-Tex selector presents a new chapter in the “Wolrd of Reggae Music Collection“ called The Ska Originals.

The Jam-Tex selector has been working on a study and organization of the essential tracks of reggae music called “The World of Reggae Music Collection.” The selector invites others to comment on the selected tracks and to join in on the conversation about the history of reggae music.  This collection of singles began with the greatest roots reggae hits in categories entitled “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lions of Jah” and “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lion Youth.”

Now the selector moves back in time to the roots of reggae, exploring the greatest singles from the early ska era. Please feel free to suggest your favorite singles. The primary examination of the “Ska Originals” genre focuses on the founders of ska music from the late 1950s to the 1960s. Later posts will explore “Two-Tone Ska” and “Third Wave Ska” forms of ska music of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

Some of the same Jamaican singers, musicians, and producers of the original ska music movement later became the fathers and mothers of rocksteady and reggae.  A young Robert Nesta Marley recorded some ska tunes and so did Bob Marley’s vocal group the Wailin’ Wailers, which later became the Wailers. Alton Ellis, Jimmy Cliff, Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Derrick Morgan, Clancy Eccles, and Lee “Scratch” Perry all played ska as young lads. These Jamaican superstars all make this collection of ska singles. So do the classic ska bands and vocal groups like The Skatalites, the Ethiopians, The Pioneers, the Soulettes, The Paragons, The Heptones, and the Versatiles. Many of the great ska musicians have singles that made this chart, like Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, and Tommy McCook.

Ska music is fun and fast, yet a very easy-going music that sends you skanking around the room. I love this music. There are some wonderful characters that came out of this musical genre, performers like Prince Buster, Sir Lord Comic, Lord Kitchener, Stranger Cole, Lord Creator, and the Folkes Brothers. Plus the dynamite sounds of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires make for some of the most classic ska tracks. The Jam-Tex selector invites you to comment on the list and make suggestions.

Toots is a man eater

Just when you were probably thinking I had something against “island” music played by actual inhabitants of the islands, I spring this one on you.  Anyone who knows me and knows my taste in music knows that I am really not a fan of reggae, in fact I used to dislike it so much I’d leave the room if it was on.  Then along came my wife who introduces me to Toots, one of the original reggae “masters”, and in my opinion, the man who funkified Reggae.  My eyes were opened and now every summer out comes “The Very Best of Toots & The Maytals”.  When Toots comes from the speakers at any party, you know it is time to do some major chillin’.

Since this is a Greatest hits album it is hard to choose only a few songs to add to your ultimate summer playlist, but tops in my book are “Funky Kingston“; which, if you watched TLC’s Miami Ink, you will remember as their opening theme song.  I love the vocal flow of  “Pomps & Pride“, it has the ability to put a smile on my face every time I hear it. A tough choice for the third song you need to add would be a song you have probably heard Hundreds of times, but probably not this original version. “Pressure Drop” was probably made most famous by The Specials, but was originally recorded by Toots & The Maytals in 1969.

So there you go, probably the only “real” reggae album you will see on this list, so take it all in if you are a fan of Reggae.  Some people say Reggae IS summer music, but when all you listen to is Reggae all summer long, it definitely gets old.

According to my cousin’s husband Duane and Barb Evelyn’s daughter  – this marriage only lasted a few days.

According to my aunt Tami – Mildred thought this marriage didn’t count and LuRay was already born by then.

Tami thinks Mildred only married Herbert because of LuRay.

New questions after learning these facts:

1. If she wanted to marry someone becuase of LuRay why not marry Richard Zabka, the father?
2. What aren’t they telling me about this marriage?
3. If LuRay was already born couldn’t either man be the father, Richard Zabka or Herbert Bothern?
4. If the marriage only lasted a few days, what exactly is a few days to them, a day, two days, three, a week?

On June 8, 2009 I was searching through various genealogy sites looking for any information which could possible lead me in the right direction in finding my grandfather, Richard Dale Zabka. In return I found a marriage certificate{See Image Below} for my grandmother and Herbert Bothern, now this wouldn’t be such a big deal but the date of the marriage is October 27, 1949. Just a little over one month earlier my mother was born…coincidence or something more?  Upon asking questions about this to family members the answers varied from shock, hurt,anger, or something in between. One thing is for sure finding this marriage certificate has left me with more questions than answers.

Coincidence or Something More?

Hey ladies!  Just a quick post today, to share some happy news!  I was selected as a Guest Design Team member by Phebe at The Town Scrapper in Petrolia, Ontario, Canada!  I am so excited for the opportunity to work with Phebe, the rest of the DT – Kimmie,  Amy, Tricia, and the other 2 GDT members – Angie, and Candy!  My term is for two months, so I will be making lots and lots of cards with some of the *YUMMY* products Phebe carries in her store!  Some of my personal favourites are stamps from Whiff of Joy, Magnolia, The Greeting Farm, High Hopes, and her newest line – Motivet!

I realize now that these blog endeavors need an overarching theme.

Therefore, my theme, believe it or not, is being a lady and doing so in style.  Granted, I’m not super stylish in some cases, but I am a lady at all times.

Especially when I toot.

Ladies toot. Non-ladies fart.  Lesson One.

Here’s another very important lesson for you: RSVP-ing is one of the most important and classy things you need to do.

I recently threw a bridal shower with my lovely sisters for our soon to be lovely other sister.  And guess what! Very few people RSVPed! Despite there being several options for how to do so on the invite.  They will forever be shamed for this oversight.  If you don’t want to be shamed, learn that it’s customary to RSVP by the date you’re told to do so.

Speaking of the shower, it was lovely.  Very comforatble and cute.  I’m officially a fan of gatherings of generations of women and margaritas.  And games!  Wait, I was already a fan of games.  Well, anyway. It was very nice.

Oh, another note – Ladies love to drink cocktails outside.  When confronted with the option of what to do on a sunny day, it’s a safe bet to suggest drinking daiquiries out on tha patio.  This goes double if you can arrange for some classy records to be playing.

Also, this classy lady enjoys winning nerdy movie tickets.  Maybe other ladies like space movies, but it’s not safe to assume on that one.  Best to ask first.

Okay, I’ll admit it, I love fart jokes.  Whether it be telling them or hearing them, I absolutely love them and I think that being a lover of fart jokes makes me pretty typical amongst the majority of people out there.  However, sometimes people can be a little shy when it comes to discussing bodily functions so they often keep their ”dark side” to themselves, never letting it be known that they, too, love fart jokes just as much as the next person does.  Here, at The Cluttered Bubble Blog, I want everyone to feel free to “step out of their shell” and let loose (pardon the pun, lol) whatever gas they may care to share because everyone is welcome to ‘blow’ their gas-wares here.
