I heard from Love Magazine that the unstoppable photography team Mert & Marcus are working on a new book.  The collection is a series of pictures featuring candid nightlife moments of famous icons (such as Kate Moss – photographs below).  Anyways I love their work – they have a way of letting the light breathe into each image (especially with their black and white work) The bold tones are somehow enhanced by platinum lighting (or retouching you can never really be so sure).

I’ve been inspired by a few different things lately…  among them, Karen O (as always), a little dip back into Cabaret, skeletons, deer, sequins, studs, faux fur, and Bauhaus.

As the nights get colder and the days begin to gray, I find myself aesthetically drawn to dark themes, motifs from nature and how wolves can be juxtaposed with deer…  stylistically and metaphorically.

A couple of weeks ago, while I was drowning in my 2-day  jury duty sentence, I was released before my husband was finished with work. So, I figured that would be my only opportunity to stop in at Top Shop on a weekday. I have tried multiple times to go during the weekend, but it is always crowded to a point where any normal New Yorker over the age of 20 should have a panic attack…

I was very excited to hear a few months back that Top Shop was opening on Broadway near Broome Street. I have browsed the British site many times over the past few years for fashion inspiration. When Kate Moss became a featured contributor with her own line, I thought it was a very smart move and similar to that of H&M’s recent moves with Madonna, Jimmy Choo, etc. The biggest difference I found between Top Shop and H&M was the prices…$300 for a little studded jacket? This place is not your go-to bargain store for a quick fashion fix to help you dress for a last minute party…unless Balenciaga is included in your normal shopping spree…

Another thing I noticed once I had browsed my way past the sticker shock and a few Upper Eastside ‘gossip girls’, I realized that it was all 80’s inspired. I felt as though I had gone back in a time machine to the days when I was 7 years old rummaging through my 4 older sisters’ closets – bulky cord sweaters, tight stone-washed jeans with zippers, huge shoulder pads, sequins, flowers, fuschia, purple, lace! ahhhhhhh…

Luckily, I found my way to the fifth floor where I found some cute boyfriend-inspired clothes – a trend I am in love with and always have been. I also found the Office shoe section, which I am positive was somehow inspired by yours truly. I bought a pair of great booties that have a big enough heel to have some height yet not hurt my feet after a day of work or add 5″ to my already 5′11″ frame…

I’m happy with what I found, but struggling to rid myself of the 80’s deja vu and wondering if I will ever step foot in Top Shop again considering jury duty only comes around every 8 years or so…

Esse vestido escandaloso que a minha BFF Kate está usando é da coleção dela para a incrível Top Shop (só eu fiquei pasma de ela ter esse corpo aos 35 anos mesmo depois de ter sido mãe?!). Eu mega amei porque o paetê, assim como o tule, é o novo preto. ha-ha.

Nas minhas últimas viagens eu pirei no paetê, comprando jaqueta, malha e até mesmo uma legging-palco que ainda não tive coragem de usar pelas ruas de São Paulo. Assim como esses itens, acho que esse vestido da Kate é tipo aquelas peças que, depois que a gente compra, viram parte da família. Não sei se vocês têm isso também, mas tenho algumas roupas que amo tanto que tenho até dó de usar.

Tenho um casaquinho vermelho que comprei na Top Shop em 2001 que não usei mais de dez vezes, com medo de gastar. Gente, dez vezes em OITO ANOS! Oi, tenho problema?! Tenho também uma camiseta com a estampa da capa do The Catcher in the Rye que comprei em agosto do ano passado na Urban Outfitters que ainda nem experimentei. Isso sem falar num vestido lindo da Cavalera preto com uma estampa nas costas super colorida-tropical-carmem-miranda que gastei os tubos em 2005 e usei, tipo, duas vezes desde então.

Juro que não é desperdício nem falta do que fazer, mas é que muitas vezes acho essas peças tão especiais que dá dó de gastar usando pra ir trabalhar no Limão ou pra um fim de noite em qualquer bar sujo da Augusta. Né não?!

Last night, Topshop closed to the public for the NY Mag sponsored Holiday Style Event. Everything in the store was 20% off!

Guests shopped and sipped prosecco while members of Au Revoir Simone DJ’d. This was the first non-stressful shopping experience I’ve ever had at Topshop. Normally the crowds of shoppers and tourists keep me away. But this time my experience was nothing but pleasant. I could move around the store freely, and not fight other shoppers for dresses in my size. And the gorgeous new holiday collection was all the more alluring priced at 20% off.

Get ready for holiday party season!

The holiday collection is full of lacy and sparkly and items. I saw quite a few sequined pieces straight out of my Grandmother’s closet, circa 1985. Many looked suspiciously similar to items I picked up on my last trip to a midwestern thrift store. Most of the collection was beautiful, but there were a few ridiculous items too, like lace crop tops and saggy-crotched sequin harem pants.

And then there was this:

What the hell?

I grabbed an armful of clothing and headed to the first floor dressing room, where the line was much smaller. Unfortunately, it was still about 100degrees. The bright topshop lighting that makes all the clothing look so pretty and your skin look amazing almost caused me to melt.

Case in point:

I found a few dresses I’d been drooling over earlier this summer marked down to $30. Unfortunately they didn’t work out, but they still looked pretty cute:

More shoppers. Look how un-crowded it was!

The event was soooo much fun. My only complaint: I literally had to stalk the waiters with champagne for twenty minutes, through all three floors of the store before I could grab a glass. It appeared as if one server was manning the entire store–at least until I finally got my glass, and then had to decline the second server who appeared less than five minutes later.

I ended up going home with a new party dress, that ridiculous head dress (which I bought for the themed New Year’s party I plan on throwing, but might return because it’s so silly. Even though it somehow rang up 25% off!), and a pair of silver sequined fingerless gloves. Clearly I’m either secretly an eccentric 85 year old grandma, or a drag queen at heart.

It’s my sisters 16th birthday in 9 days times. I have spent the weekend designing her this picture which I am getting printed onto canvas. I really hope she likes it because I’m too poor to get her anything else!

For the actual design I took inspiration from Nick Ainsley (Shiny Binary) I love how he uses 3d text in his work. For this piece I used photoshop and cinema 4d. It was my first time using cinema 4d so it was a bit of headache actually creating the 3d text but I got there in the end!

My sister is very much into her high street fashion, so I choose the text ‘top shop chick’, I then used patterns by Cath Kidston to fill the letters. I grabbed a nice photo of a city boutique street and added plenty of lighting effects. Finally I cut out a picture I took of my sister on Mothers day (unfortunately her face is covered by her hair but I didn’t want to take a new photo of her because that would have given the surprise away) and added some glows and shiny lines. I am pretty pleased with the final image it took a while to build but it was very fun to build.

I have put this image up before Sophie’s Birthday but I am pretty confident that she is not an avid Greg Lewis Blog fan!

I am all for instilling a sense of charity in your kids, as David and Victoria Beckham say they are doing with theirs, but there is another example the Becks could set. Lady B gets given much of her fine wardrobe. She is one of the best clothes horses in town and a newly ordained designer to boot. But by appearing to hoover up shoes, clothes and bags like a hardened cocaine snorter she is giving the legions of fans who follow her such a picture of avid consumerism it could lead her less savvy followers down the road to serious debt.

Don’t get me wrong I love the poshest of the Spice’s. She wears the kind of shoes I would choose to twist around a pole. She was also born under my sun sign of Aries so is a fellow social tourettes sufferer, which makes for hilarious reading.

However she would seriously play the integrity card by flying over from the US and going shopping at the Selfridges Really Really Great Garage Sale this Sunday where Louise Redknapp, Trinny Woodall, Yasmin Le Bon and Denise Van Outen, amongst others, will be donating covetable items for sale and acting as stallholders to raise money for the charity Mothers4children. No-one would give Mrs Beckham gip for being snapped wearing something second hand. The last time she did an Oxfam photocall in 2006, she got a heap of easy publicity and sales of women’s clothes at Oxfam went through the roof. So it’s win win.

I am not one for telling people to do things I would not dream of doing myself, (apart from “taking a hike”) so, having heard charities are losing subscriptions hand over fist, I have upped my personal donations and tempered my own out of control clothes’ habit. I have swapped Zara for frock-swapping and Oxford St for Ebay. I keep my eye on dates at http://www.bigwardrobe.com/TheBigSwish/index.aspx.

I even frock-swap and swish online at http://www.swishing.co.uk and http://www.swishing.biz but do prefer parties to the online experience: the Internet has nothing on holding a glass of Chilean white in one hand and sifting through a rail of glorious bargains with the other. “Swishing parties are for all those women who want to combine glamour, environmental protection and frugality,” says Lucy Shea, founder of Swishing and director of Futerra Sustainability Communications on her site http://www.swishing.org , “Save money, save the planet, have a party.”

According to Shea the rules of the rail are simple:

1) Everyone must bring at least one item of quality clothing.
2) You have half an hour to browse before the swish opens.
3) No item may be claimed before the swish opens.
4) As soon as the swish is declared open, everyone may take what they want.
5) And, lest we forget, no scratching, spitting or fighting.”

Swishing not only keeps you off the high street, it is good for your money kharma. Most parties raise money for charity and some even give you a percentage of the proceeds from the clothes you donate. The last frock swap I participated in at a friend’s house took 25% off each item sold for Multiple Sclerosis and we pocketed the rest. Despite spending most of my booty the same night I was proud to get rid of my most heinous fashion mistakes, chuffed I hadn’t added to the carbon count and sweatshop labour and felt like a child with a secret pack of chewing gum as I walked out of the door, fingering the small wad of notes in my pocket.

Who knows, with a little public pressure, maybe we could convince the lady of labels to alternate between her clothes line and vintage. Could I be so bold as to suggest she take the swishing trend to LA? Forget her new forays into fashion design, big up vintage in Beverley Hills and Mrs Beckham really could change the world.

L’inverno sta arrivando e, se state programmando qualche acquisto per i giorni freddi, ecco dei consigli diretti dal set della terza serie di Gossip Girl.

Qui Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) indossa una camicia Alexander McQueen con fiocco (sbuca dal cappotto), un paio di decoltè con plateau Lanvin e una borsa Valentino 360. Il cappotto non so di che marca sia, ma è chiaro e con molti particolari che non passano inosservati..elegante ma sfizioso, per chi non vuole un modello classico.

Ancora Blair, ma questa volta in un total look rosso. Il cappotto è di Nanette Lepore, mentre i sandali sono di Pour La Victoire. Ancora una volta plateau, ma questa volta sceglie di indossare delle autoreggenti con particolari floreali con dei sandali aperti. La cosa strana? Le dita che sbucano sembrano “senza calze”.

Per chi non ama i cappotti lunghi, ecco l’arternativa (e low cost): un micro cappotto grigio di Top Shop. La borsa con fiocco rosso è di Phillip Lim. Blair sceglie i  leggings ed abbina ad un total look scuro particolari rossi/bordeaux e l’effetto è perfetto.

E per chi vuole un look meno elegante, ecco la piccola Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen), che sceglie un minidress con calze nere trasparenti e mini giacca in pelle borchiata. Per concludere decoltè nere di vernice, cappelli di lana grigio e guanti senza dita abbinati. La borsa, invece, è nera e maxy, di Yves Saint Laurent.
